In a reality television genre saturated with shows about dating and finding romance, recent years have seen a surprising evolution to this concept: matchmaking programs. Spearheaded by Netflix, shows like Indian Matchmaking and Jewish Matchmaking have captured the hearts (and need for delicious drama) of many genre fans. These series offer both societal insight and your usual romantic mess, with the hosts guiding viewers through each culture's unique approach to helping people find love. Yet while these are entertaining and educational in so many ways, viewers have long had an issue with the over-reliance on often restrictive traditions that each matchmaker imposes upon their clients — which is what makes Muslim Matchmaker such a standout.

Director Smriti Mundhra’s Muslim Matchmaker premieres on Hulu today, a show that might be described as a sibling docuseries to her Netflix hits Indian Matchmaking and Jewish Matchmaking.
But that’s not all Mundhra has going on, by any means. She directs one of the episodes of the upcoming HBO documentary series Eyes on the Prize III: We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest 1977-2015 and – a big and – she goes for an Oscar on March 2 for her short film I Am Ready, Warden, from MTV Documentary Films.
On the new episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, Mundhra takes us inside the making of I Am Ready, Warden, which documents the final days of Texas death row inmate John Henry Ramirez. Mundhra interviewed the condemned man, captured the last conversation between Ramirez and his young son Izzy and – just as remarkably – revealed the emotional angst of Aaron Castro,...

Fox Entertainment Studios is developing the first scripted series representation of the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, sharing the real-life accounts that emerged from the dark day in the country’s history.
Premiering this October, the four-part anthology series, “One Day in October,” centers on four gritty and unflinching narratives of love, courage, survival and loss. From parental sacrifice and joyful moments turning to torment, to beacons of hope in the heart of chaos, each story reveals profound truths about the senseless carnage of Hamas’ assault, the visceral emotions it released and, as each victim’s world unraveled around them, the perseverance and sheer heroism required to survive.
“’One Day in October’ is among the most powerful projects I’ve seen, let alone been involved with,” head of Fox Entertainment Studios Fernando Szew said in a Monday statement. “Beautifully filmed, yet gut-wrenching, these are stories of people at their best in the midst of unimaginable,...

Exclusive: As the anniversary of October 7 approaches, the first scripted series about the devastating attack has emerged.
Fox Entertainment Studios and Israel’s yes TV are co-producing One Day in October, a four-part anthology series which the pair are calling the “first scripted representation of the personal stories that emerged from Oct. 7.”
Created by Oded Davidoff and Daniel Finkelman, the drama series, which is filmed on location in Israel, centers on four narratives of love, courage, survival and loss. From parental sacrifice and moments turning to torment to beacons of hope amid chaos, each story reveals profound truths about the “senseless carnage of this assault,” according to its backers. Cast includes Swell Ariel Or (The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem), Noa Kedar (The Malevolent Bride), Naomi Levov, Hisham Suliman, Wael Hamdoun (Fauda), Yuval Semo, Avi Azulay (Testament: The Story of Moses), Naveh Tzur and Yael Abecassis.
On October 7, Hamas militants stormed into Israel attacking, amongst other places, a number of kibbutzes and the Nova Music Festival, killing around 1,200 people and taking more than 200 hostage, of which only around half have so far returned and a number are presumed dead. The attack was the catalyst for the Israel-Hamas War, which has so far seen the deaths of around 40,000 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
One Day in October is one of the first projects for Fox Entertainment Studios banner Tideline, which Deadline revealed was launching earlier this year at Sundance. The anthology, which is being produced by Finkelman’s New York-based production company Sparks Go and Israel’s Zoa Films, will premiere on yes TV in October and be distributed globally by Fox Entertainment Global.
“One Day in October is among the most powerful projects I’ve seen, let alone been involved with,” said Fernando Szew, head of Fox Entertainment Studios. “Beautifully filmed, yet gut-wrenching, these are stories of people at their best in the midst of unimaginable, horrible circumstances. The survivors portrayed in this series allowed for their horrific experiences to be represented by wonderful talent — both in front of and behind the camera – which will invite the audience to ultimately feel their profound love of, and for, life.”
Finkleman added: “Our goal with this series is to capture and convey the picturesque kibbutz and euphoric music celebration that abruptly crumbled into incomprehensible nightmares. Thanks to the unwavering support of Fernando, Hannah and Tideline, I think we’ve achieved that vision and were able to create this four-part series from start to finish within a year, which is almost unheard of for any production.”
There are already a couple of movies in the works about October 7 and its aftermath including Dani Rosenberg’s Of Dogs and Men, which will world premiere at Venice, while several documentaries are being made about the attack. One Day in October also has shades of Ukraine War anthology series Those Who Stayed.
“At Tideline, our mission is to tell relevant and impactful stories from differentiated voices and perspectives globally,” said Hannah Pillemer, Executive Vice President and Head of Scripted at Fox Entertainment Studios. “One Day in October is seminal, poignant and beautifully told, making it a fitting and essential addition to Tideline’s growing footprint.”
One Day in October features four hour-long episodes written by Liron Ben-Shlush (Next to Her, Working Woman), Davidoff (The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem, The Malevolent Bride), Adam G. Simon, and Amir Hasfari and Keren Weissman (Mama’s Angel). It is directed by Davidoff and produced by Finkelman (Menasche, The Performance), Chaya Amor (The Performance), Aviv Ben-Shlush, Lee Ben-Shlush Kuperman and Szew.

Indian Matchmaking season 4 has not been confirmed by Netflix, and there is no official news about its renewal. Sima Taparia, the show's matchmaker, continues her matchmaking business and interacts with fans, promoting her online service, UrbanMatch. Sima recently celebrated her 41st wedding anniversary, showcasing her long-lasting marriage as a role model for aspiring spouses.
Indian Matchmaking, part of Netflix's Matchmaking series, introduced viewers to Sima Taparia, and it's time to talk about whether season 4 of the show is happening. Sima, who's based mostly in Mumbai, is much like Jewish Matchmaking's Aleeza Ben Shalom - both relationship experts are the best of the best. Though the show has been criticized in the past for some of its matches, watching Sima work is enjoyable.
Through the years, Sima has created some successful matches, and continues to work with clients throughout India and across the globe.

Ubisoft has pushed hard this time for its upcoming shooter game, XDefiant, which fans believe will take Call of Duty head-on. Interestingly, a former Infinity Ward executive producer who has worked on the original Modern Warfare series is acting as game director. It then shouldn’t surprise fans to see the game featuring jaw-dropping mechanics.
But that’s not all, Skill Based Matchmaking (Sbmm) is one hot topic in the first-person shooter arena. Considering this, Ubisoft chose not to keep the algorithm central to matchmaking in the game. The director explains why this factor should be taken care of.
Only Players Can Tell if They Are Better Off Without it XDefiant took on Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare II on Twitch during its beta run.

Nechama meets a not-too-promising date, in the romantic comedy Matchmaking. Courtesy of Israeli Films
Matchmaking, one of the best comedies at this year’s St. Louis Jewish Film Festival, is a romantic comedy about a young Orthodox Jewish who seems to have everything a family could want in a match – good family, good grades, good looks – but who is pining for a girl who, on paper, does not match up.
Yeshiva student Moti Bernstein (Amit Rahav) is a good student and obedient son from a respected Israeli Ashkenazi Jewish family who has reached the age to start looking for a wife. Moti is a catch who has it all – handsome, smart, tall, from a good Ashkenazi family – everything any matchmaker or Orthodox family would want. As an A-list candidate in the books of Orthodox matchmaking, Moti is a guy who should have his pick of any girl he wants for a bride.

Although the Best Structured Reality Program Emmy has only gone to two series (“Shark Tank” and “Queer Eye”) since being introduced in 2014, the corresponding unstructured award has been won by six different shows in the same stretch of time. “Love on the Spectrum” took the 2022 prize but is out of the running this time, leaving 2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” as the only show with a shot at pulling off the category’s first repeat victory in four years.
“Untucked” is one of three returning contenders in the current Best Unstructured Reality Program lineup, along with “Indian Matchmaking” and “Selling Sunset.” Both were bested by RuPaul’s series in 2021, while the latter also lost alongside it in 2022. Rounding out this bunch are “Vanderpump Rules,” which has finally broken through with Emmy voters after 10 seasons, and new show “Welcome to Wrexham,” which, according to Gold Derby’s odds, is heavily favored to win.

After Jewish Matchmaking season 1 brought viewers into the world of Jewish relationships, the prolific matchmaker Aleeza got noticed. The series not only shared the romantic aspects of matchmaking, but made it clear that there's a lot more to matchmaking within a religion than just sharing attraction. The newest Netflix reality show, Jewish Matchmaking, focuses on what it is like to date in the 21st century with some added help from matchmaker Aleeza Ben Shalom, who embraces particular customs, as she is a practicing Orthodox Jew. Aleeza won audiences over with her upbeat personality and fun dating acronyms. She often joked her services were cheaper than getting a divorce, which she hoped would encourage singletons to try her services out.
With Jewish Matchmaking season 1 just having been released, there is a lot to be said for the new series. Much like its predecessor, Indian Matchmaking, the series aims to showcase a new culture, this time Judaism, in hopes of helping single people find love within their culture. With a new cast of young people looking for companionship, it isn't hard to understand why audiences have fallen in love with the spinoff.

Senain Kheshgi (Project Kashmir) will executive produce the series alongside Mundhra, with executive editorial producer Poh Si Teng overseeing the project for ABC News Studios.
In development since 2022, the series will debut on Hulu next year.
While dating and matchmaking shows have become commonplace on both linear TV and on streaming services, Mundhra notes that “this project that will give audiences a chance to experience this journey from a perspective too rarely seen in the mainstream.”

Dating shows have been a steady income stream for Netflix. They are a subgenre of reality, and reality costs a lot less than scripts. But a new phenomenon has popped up in people’s algorithms—the matchmaking show. Currently, two shows are topping the charts on Netflix, which may portend a new wave of water cooler conversations.
Dating shows and other programs based on love have proven they can stand the test of time, which may play a huge part in Netflix's current obsession with the subgenre.
The State of Dating On the Small Screen
People have been watching dating shows of all shapes and sizes for decades. Whether it is the original The Dating Game or the more current The Bachelor, we love watching people find love… or melt down and burn up in the process.

Jewish Matchmaking is the newest gem in the Netflix reality crown, but it was preceded by the very sparkly Indian Matchmaking, and it's time to talk about how the two shows compare. Both have their pros and cons, but only one of these similar series can come out on top. Sharing their good and bad points makes it quite simple to decide which show "wins." Of course, opinions are subjective, and since both series are fun to watch, viewers never lose.
Indian Matchmaking has been around since 2020, but Jewish Matchmaking season 1 recently released. While one series has more longevity, their premises are quite similar. Within that "matchmaker helps couples" framework, some key differences begin to emerge, if subtly, and they are important. It's not about preferring one culture to another, or anything like that. This comparison is about deciding which show offers the most of what reality TV viewers really want - entertainment value.

When Jewish Matchmaking season 1 cast member Dani Bergman was introduced onscreen, she made a first great impression, but there are some valid reasons why she didn't find her perfect partner on the Netflix series. Unfortunately, the brunette with the bold personality couldn't form a really strong connection with her dates, despite the best efforts of the show's matchmaking queen, Aleeza Ben Shalom. However, that doesn't mean that Dani's sitting around moping - that's just not her style.
In the vein of another fantastic Netflix series, Indian Matchmaking, Jewish Matchmaking takes viewers on an interesting ride, which includes an array of exciting elements, such as gorgeous locations, attractive cast members, and compelling information about culture and heritage. Both shows offer an intoxicating blend of romance and time-honored tradition. However, some Jewish Matchmaking cast members are less traditional than others, and Dani's one of them. She's into making the scene, even on Friday nights and Saturdays.

Indian Matchmaking star Sima Taparia and her questionable success rate makes Netflix viewers wonder if any of the couples on the show managed to stay together or get married. Sima, a matchmaker from Mumbai, became a household name thanks to the overnight success of season 1. Sima charges a hefty fee to help Asian singles find a match as per their religious and physical preferences, and received 5,000 calls in a day after the show aired. She jet sets around the world and has helped cast members meet like-minded people by putting in her best efforts, even when the stars aren't aligned.
Matchmaker Sima recently starred on Indian Matchmaking season 3. Filled with drama, tears, unrealistic demands, and meme-worthy one-liners, the new season shockingly featured love stories that received happy endings. The cast had their fair share of doubts and bouts of pickiness, from someone preferring a poet to another wanting a man with a top knot.

Jewish Matchmaking season 1 on Netflix introduced couple Nakysha Osadchey and Evan Carmusin, and their current relationship status is a surprising one. The spin-off of Indian Matchmaking featuring Sima Taparia, Jewish Matchmaking is about Aleeza Ben Shalom meeting Jewish singles from across the globe to help them find their future husband or wife. Aleeza is a professional matchmaking and dating coach with clients varying in age and levels of religion. In six episodes, the series introduced nine couples and Shidduch dating.
On Jewish Matchmaking season 1, Aleeza's clients rely on Shidduchim, which is a centuries-old practice where Jewish singles are introduced to others from their communities with the intention of an arranged marriage. Nakysha, a strong independent woman, was one to watch out for. She tried to navigate the world of dating on her own but felt as if she was being fetishized due to the color of her skin. There’s a saying in the Jewish community that certain things are bad for the Jews. The list largely includes people with a great deal of power and money who use it for nefarious ends: Bernie Madoff, Jeffrey Epstein, Woody Allen. (Other things that are arguably not-so-great for the Jews: Einstein’s Bagels; virtually any male character from a Noah Baumbach film; and the fact that the only Jewish character in The Babysitters’ Club series is a whiny curly-haired girl with allergies.)

Netflix's Jewish Matchmaking makes for an interesting paradox. Produced by the team behind Indian Matchmaking, the eight-episode series fails spectacularly as a dating show. Matchmaker Aleeza Ben Shalom spends hardly any time with this group of love-seeking singles, and the series readily introduces and then abandons its subjects, leaving viewers without updates, let alone closure, on the couples that do emerge. At the same time, however, Jewish Matchmaking is one of the first shows on television to embrace the diversity of the Jewish community by featuring Jews of different races and ethnicities and with varying degrees of observance.

Indian Matchmaking star Aparna Shewakramani has come a long way since being the villain of the Netflix shows. Aparna, a 37-year-old lawyer from Houston, was perhaps the most talked about cast member in 2020 after she hired Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia to find her a husband. Sima called Aparna fickle-minded and thought she was rude. After all, Aparna had a never-ending list of things she hated about people. Aparna met Srinivas Rao, Shekhar Jayaraman, and Jay Wadhwani through Sima Aunty in Indian Matchmaking season 1.
Aparna and Jay were together in Indian Matchmaking season 1, and he even introduced her to his friend. However, in Indian Matchmaking season 2, Aparna revealed she had decided to stay friends with Jay. He even helped her move to New York City and set up a new house. Jay eventually got engaged to Stephanie Robbins, with his and Aparna's friendship still going strong. Aparna then started exploring a...

Indian Matchmaking returned for season 3 in April, and there are facts to share about how the cast members are doing now. Indian Matchmaking shows matchmaker Sima Taparia helping clients from all over the world. In the age of dating apps, she assists them as they go a different route, navigating the arranged marriage process. While Sima may charge a hefty fee to help her single clients find the best matches, it doesn't necessarily mean that the show's stars end up together.
Sima may not have the best success rate on the Smriti Mundhra-created show, Indian Matchmaking, but she claims that she got thousands of phone calls per day after the series launched. Sima advises her clients, who are educated and modern, to compromise, while doling out her classic one-liners. She's a major reason for the series' success, and Sima's probably getting richer thanks to her high society clients. There's...

Indian Matchmaking season 3 star Arti Lalwani got engaged to Jamal, and Netflix viewers are interested in knowing if the couple's still together. The popular Netflix show doesn’t have a high success rate in terms of marriages. Plus, Sima Taparia's unique quotes and punchlines sometimes make one wonder if Indian Matchmaking is scripted or real. However, Sima is definitely a genuine matchmaker from Mumbai. She's become so immensely popular due to reality TV fame that she received 5000 calls a day after the series' 2020 premiere. The fees that Sima charges may have increased as her notoriety grew.
In season 3, one of Indian Matchmaking lead Sima's clients from the U.S. is 31-year-old Arti. Her father passed away in 2021, and he'd wanted her to marry an Indian, preferably a Sindhi man. Sima flew to Miami to meet with Arti. Done with dating men who aren’t serious about commitment, Arti sought help from Sima,...
