This fifteen-minute documentary features film historians Kevin Brownlow and Jeffrey Vanec as they discuss the differences between the 1925 and 1942 versions of Charles Chaplin's THE GOLD RUSH. The men discuss the original film and its huge success as well as how when sound came along it pretty much made silent movies dead property. They discuss how Chaplin re-edited the movie and added narration to it so that a new generation of fans could watch it. The documentary also talks about how Chaplin pretty much disowned the silent version and why the original cut pretty much went missing until Brownlow decided to try and restore it. Fans of THE GOLD RUSH will certainly enjoy this documentary as it does a great job at explaining what happened to the original version as well as the popularity of the 1942 cut. I've always found it fascinating that Chaplin re-did so much of his work with THE GOLD RUSH having the most drastic changes.
