A relentless and grim indiefilm, reminiscent of The Decent, in terms of tight spaces, part homage to Alien with it's creature design. It's a dark film with tight metal shafts, torch lit, choking soil filled tunnels as Tank and company try to find there way out.
Lead Nicole Alonso's performance as Tank and costume peaks interest, Torey Byrne and David Paul Baker are notable. The practical creature design deserve a mention being well hidden until the closing act.
Given the nature of the film the dialogue is sparse and the sound design is effective. Director Oklahoma Ward's Crawl or Die (a.k,a Alien Crawl) is a slow burning low budget feature that will certainly disturb claustrophobics. It does a lot with its limited budget.
Worth checking out if you like the likes of The Dark Lurking (2010),Hunter Prey (2009), Cargo (2009), Crawlspace (2012).
One of the peeps who wrote a review on this board said throw some money to these people. I agree. Based on what they did with this production, I think they are the kind of film makers that can make a little money go a long way. Imagine what this movie would've been like had they put $1mil or $2mil into it. I'll be looking forward to seeing what they do next. The horror genre needs all the help it can get. :)
Some people seem to like claustrophobic movies and if that's why they're writing raving reviews for this horrible movie, I'd suggest that you go watch The Pyramid (2014). It's claustrophobic, it has great acting and cinematography and it comes with a lot of effective jump scares. You can even re-watch The Descent (2005), but trust me, with Crawl or Die you're just going to be angry with yourself for wasting your time and money.
You have to judge it for what it is and the constraints.
The plot is entirely incidental to the flow.
The Descent, Beneath, Buried, .REC, Alien, Cube, Dead Calm, Open Water, Das Boot, The Vanishing, this takes claustrophobia to a new level, or depth .
It's not reasonable to compare those movies to Crawl because of the constraints. hold Crawl to that level of quality.
Don't fast forward it because the value of the movie is in the extreme intensity and claustrophobia.
My anxiety level built up to the point at the 2/3 mark I had to take a break and a sedative. If I'm going to have a heart attack, I want it to be for something really enjoyable that involved several companions and wreck my marriage! Just kidding!
I'm thinking the whole time how incredibly fit the protagonist is and boy do I need get off the couch. What a motivator.
A couple of improvements - personally - I would have made: no special audio effects. Sound, yes but not effects. Sometimes, less is more. That's worth a point in itself.
There's some obvious/blatant copy/paste from other movies. But they are not important. Just let it go.
Lastly, I watched it at 2 in the morning by myself. Perfect recipe.
Enjoy the show. Disregard the very high and the very low reviews and you'll get a more accurate/objective recommendation.

- TriviaDirector Oklahoma Ward and actress Nicole Alonso said they planned on making two sequels and even got offers from studios who wanted to produce them, but they turned them down because they all wanted to turn Alonso's character Tank into a typical horror movie sex object, which is something the distributors of the first film also wanted to do. The studios wanted to include scenes showing her taking a shower, having sex, running around topless or just be fully nude in most of the films. They even wanted scenes where various monsters would try to rape her. Ward and Alonso ultimately decided to try and finance the sequels themselves just like they did this one, but as of April 2021, they still hadn't made them or any other films since this one was released.
