Upon its release in 1998, the Korean ghost film “Whispering Corridors” proved to be immensely successful in part with its release at the forefront of the J-Horror Movement. Appearing as a contemporary of celebrated titles “Ringu” and “Ju-On” among numerous others, it helped to spawn a franchise. “Memento Mori” arrived one year later and then this third entry a couple of years later. Helmed by first-time director Yun Jae-yeon and feeling very much like a retread of the material the genre was producing elsewhere around the world, that does strike this one down slightly even with its celebrated positives.

These days, Christopher Nolan is busy dominating the box office and riding high off making the first blockbuster to win Best Picture in 20 years. But back in 2000, he was barely an up-and-coming director. With just one self-funded film to his name (1998's "Following"), the director finally had a modest budget from an independent film studio and set to work turning his brother Jonathan's short story idea into a film.
In Jonathan's original story, "Memento Mori," a man named Earl suffers from anterograde amnesia and uses notes and tattoos to help his future self remember key information about his life, with the ultimate goal of finding the mystery individual responsible for murdering his wife. When working on the screenplay adaptation, however, Christopher Nolan came up with the idea to tell part of the narrative in reverse, thereby ensuring his film version,...

Even for South Korea’s uniquely genre-agnostic top auteurs, the career of Min Kyu-dong has been relentlessly diverse and adventurous.
Since his bold debut in 1999 with the high school lesbian horror hit Memento Mori, the 54-year-old director has tried his hand — with consistent success — at rom-coms (All for Love, All About My Wife), queer dramas (Antique, In My End Is My Beginning), period thrillers (The Treacherous), more horror (Horror Stories 2 & 3), legal dramas (Herstory) and even big-budget sci-fi (SF8).
True to form, Min’s latest feature, The Old Woman With the Knife, is a soulful meditation on the loneliness of aging disguised as a slick genre exercise. Picture John Wick, but with a solitary 60-year-old Korean lady stacking up the kill count with a sharp blade rather than Keanu with a Glock.

Sharon Van Etten isn’t the kind of songwriter who blends into a group. She’s always had an uncanny knack for making you feel utterly alone in the dark with her songs, even when you’re hearing them in broad daylight or singing them with a crowd. Who else would begin an album with the line “Sitting at the bar, I told you everything,” then follow it with “You said, ‘Holy shit’”? Ever since her earliest indie-folk days, she’s known how to turn any room into the loneliest place on earth.

Announced Jan. 21 at Miami’s Content Americas, the Rose d’Or Latinos Awards are “held during a period of great creative fervor, change, major challenges and arguably the greatest transformation the entertainment industry has ever experienced,” says jury chairman Marcos Santana, former president of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and current CEO of Mas Ros Media.
That creative fervor is well on display in nominations for the two biggest categories, Drama and Comedy/Dramedy. Variety profiles the nominees below. Some high-profile titles might seem missing: For example, Netflix’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and “Senna,” its biggest TV productions to date in Latin America. Voting, however, began before either title was released.

Christopher Nolan is a certified rockstar among cinephiles. His blend of blockbuster filmmaking with artistically satisfying storytelling has made him one of the most unique filmmakers to be working in Hollywood right now. While he still works in the genre-film sphere, Nolan tries to bring in something novel every time.
The Inception filmmaker might be one of the few filmmakers working now who can pull $100 million budgets for a three-hour biopic, but this level of artistic freedom is the result of the magic he has created with his collaborators. And none have been as consistent and foundational for the filmmaker as his brother Jonathan Nolan.

Though I'm excited about it, all the hype building for the 'Salem's Lot reboot this year only makes me more disappointed that a relatively recent TV show based on Stephen King's vampire stories wasn't more successful: Chapelwaite. The long-gestating 'Salem's Lot remake is finally coming to Max on October 3, and it's been eagerly awaited by Stephen King fans like me. It tells the story of writer Ben Mears, who returns to his temporary boyhood home of Jerusalem's Lot to write a novel only to discover that a creeping, malevolent evil is taking over the town.
'Salem's Lot was Stephen King's first real foray into the world of vampires, and, as with so many things King, it evolved over time into his own expansive lore. An important part of that lore is the short story "Jerusalem's Lot," which hasn't gotten nearly as many adaptations as 'Salem's Lot.

Christopher Nolan’s movie Memento. (Photo Credit – Instagram/IMDb)
In 2000, Christopher Nolan’s Mememto blew everyone away. The psychological thriller stars Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jorja Fox, and Joe Pantoliano. It’s the story of a man named Leonardo, who has short-term memory loss and must seek revenge for his wife’s death. Due to his forgettable memory, Leonardo had to rely only on photographs. The film is based on Christopher’s brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story, Memento Mori.
It has been 24 years since Memento was released, and Nolan fans consider it one of his best directorials. The movie has twists and turns and moments that will startle you often. But did you know that when the movie was screened initially, the response was not that great? Jonathan Nolan made this shocking revelation.

Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan grew up loving films and aspired to be filmmakers. While they have now become esteemed directors and creators today, the road was not smooth sailing and they had to find their footing in the industry during their early days. Nolan’s breakthrough film Memento was based on Jonathan’s short story Memento Mori.

Starfleet Remembrance Day honors fallen crew members annually, but Battle of Wolf 359 is not publicly commemorated. Captain Jean-Luc Picard's tactical knowledge aided the Borg, leading to devastating losses at Wolf 359. Starfleet may not commemorate Wolf 359 due to Gene Roddenberry's views on grief, but Starfleet Memorial Day could be a time for reflection.
For such a monumental tragedy, it's not known how the Battle of Wolf 359 is memorialized in the Star Trek: The Next Generation era. The devastating conflict between the Federation and the Borg Collective was one of the most destructive battles in Starfleet history. Nearly 11,000 people lost their lives during the Battle of Wolf 359, including Jennifer Sisko (Felecia M. Bell), the first wife of DS9's Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). However, with such monumental losses, it's unclear if this devastating moment in the Star Trek timeline is commemorated in the years that followed.

Keanu Reeves’ John Wick franchise is one of the most celebrated action franchises in the world. The series consists of four films, beginning with Reeves’ John Wick returning to his old life in the underworld after the death of his wife and beloved dog. The series was lauded for its inventive action choreography and world-building.
While Reeves’ John Wick may be a typical action movie character, a trained man with a dark past, there seem to be some extremely particular similarities with another character. John Reese, played by Jim Caviezel, was the protagonist of Jonathan Nolan’s sci-fi crime series Person of Interest. The two characters seem to have a lot in common.

Lieutenant Commander MacDonald, a character in Star Trek: Prodigy, has a real-life connection to the franchise as the science advisor, Dr. Erin MacDonald. Dr. MacDonald played an integral role in developing the character of Rok-Tahk and appeared in the Prodigy season 1 finale. While it is uncertain if Lt. Commander MacDonald will return, their appearance serves as both a tribute and a nod to the real-life science advisor and voice actor.
Star Trek: Prodigy's Lieutenant Commander MacDonald (Erin MacDonald) has a real-life connection to the Star Trek franchise that stretches back to 2019. Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. New Delhi, Nov 15 (Ians) A pure scaretale, the overall soundtrack of ‘The Village’ is just the perfect album you could ask for in a horror feature. Rooted in rustic and folk traditions, there is a powerful sense of an otherworldly darkness lurking in the corner, and it feels very real.
At times utterly terrifying and at times festive, ‘The Village’ jukebox feels like a bit of an emotional whiplash as it can really mess up the emotions given that you don’t know what to expect at all as it changes tone.
The soundtrack is overalla very ingeniously composed piece, and pieces such as the title track, ‘ThaayiSong’ prove this.
The instrumentation is also something that really drives in the feeling of an occult-like horror, as the sound of dholaks and bamboo flutes don’t really give you any kind of warmth, rather it just feels very ominous and sinister.

Depeche Mode were back on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night for its Halloween episode, performing “My Favourite Stranger.”
Like “Wagging Tongue” — which Depeche Mode performed on Fallon last Friday — “My Favourite Stranger” comes from the synth-pop icons’ most recent album Memento Mori. No obvious Halloween costumes were worn during the performance, but the song’s eerie melodies and foreboding subject matter suited the occasion regardless. Watch Depeche Mode perform “My Favourite Stranger” on Fallon below.
Over the weekend, Depeche Mode headlined a show at Madison Square Garden as part of their extensive “Memento Mori Tour.” Their North American leg runs through the middle of December, after which the band will tour the UK and Europe throughout early 2024. Learn how to get tickets here.

Depeche Mode completed the late-night trifecta Friday as the band appeared on The Tonight Show to perform their Memento Mori track “Wagging Tongue.”
Since announcing their latest album just over a year ago, Depeche Mode first played then-new single “Ghosts Again” on The Late Show in February, and then played that song again on Jimmy Kimmel Live in March. On Friday, a night before their Madison Square Garden gig in New York, Depeche Mode finished out the 11 p.m.-hour circuit with a visit to Jimmy Fallon’s show.

One of Spain’s biggest and oldest movie events, the Valladolid Intl. Film Festival, known as the Seminci in Spain, is broadening its range of Spanish films and aims to strengthen its position as an international platform for art films.
Running Oct. 21-28 in Valladolid, the capital city of Spanish region Castilla-Leon, the Seminci’s 68th edition marks the first under new director José Luis Cienfuegos, named last April.
With an illustrious near 30-year career as a festival director, at the helm of the Seville European Film Festival (2012-2023) and prior to that at the Gijon Intl. Film Festival (1995-2011), Cienfuegos has arrived to Valladolid at a time when a new generation of Spanish film auteurs, often women, is booming, making waves at the international festivals circuit.
“Valladolid is a city absolutely dedicated to the festival that demands and needs to open the doors to a new generation of filmmakers,...

Unveiling a raft of international shows at Mipcom, Newen Connect’s managing director Rodolphe Buet said the distribution arm of the TF1-owned company is seeing its business model go through “drastic changes” as it now plays a more central role in financing content.
In the next two years, Buet said roughly 70% of Newen Connect’s revenues will stem from content it pre-finances and/or co-produces, rather than licensing deals.
“We use to be gap deficit-ers, bringing minimum guarantees against rights for international. We’re now at the center of the equation, co-producing or co-financing to speed up the process of production,” said Buet, citing collaborations with in-house and third-party producers, alongside ongoing partnerships with TF1, Sweden’s TV4 and CMore, Germany’s Zdf and Amazon, among others.
Buet says partners have become “extremely conservative” in recent years and are on the lookout for existing IPs to limit risk. New players,...
