    Strang stranger things

I use a horror template that always promises success, mix it with the hip coming-of-age elements and go full throttle on jump scares. How can I still make a mess of the whole thing? Ok, I don't want to exaggerate. How do I make a merely average film out of the good source material? I'm borrowing too much from the Stranger Things concept without making my own. The choice of children doesn't make much of a difference, there's a lack of charisma for the most part. The synthy sound is mediocre and doesn't match the ambitions that the film sells in its marketing. I realise somewhere in the middle of my journey that I don't actually want to make a real horror film after all. What do I want then, I don't know, because generally there's a lack of big ideas? And scary, let alone horror. But hey, the pacing is right and the film only takes 90 minutes to watch.

    How the Spanish Boogeyman originated

The Boogeyman is a character known globally with different names and different interpretations depending on the geographic location. El Hombre Del Saco is a movie that focuses on the Spanish version of the Boogeyman with a different folklore. This movie uses the story that gave rise to the version of the Boogeyman that they have in Spain and it is about a real crime that was used as a source for the legend. The case of Francisco Ortega came to be known as El crimen de Gádor and is considered the official source of the legend of El Hombre Del Saco. This movie uses that and takes some of the basics of the Boogeyman. In part it does not do a bad job and it helps that the story takes place in Gádor where the myth supposedly originated. The movie has a good setting, the suspense is decent and there is a good score. This is a movie that on the surface looks good and could be a good movie. What limits it is that it emulates It and Stranger Things a lot. There are moments of comedy that shouldn't have been used or at least should have been done correctly. The teenage characters have what it takes to be good characters at the level of the protagonists of It and Stranger Things. They have some family problems that could have served to give them much more depth, but only half of them were developed. There are good dramatic moments, but they are not enough. The film should have just had Paula and Alicia better written. The lore of El Hombre Del Saco in this film consists mainly of guilt as a source of power. In most versions of the Boogeyman it is the fear of children that gives him power and that also imposes punishment on disobedient children. In this film they modify that by using the psychology of children who feel guilty about the way their parents judge them and that makes them feel like they are bad children. Something that El Hombre Del Saco takes advantage of to hunt his victims. This lore leaves a lot to be desired and felt like an excuse to replicate the final confrontation with Pennywise in It: Chapter 2. That makes there is little coherence in the last moments of the film. The narrative and style bear some resemblance to Guillermo Del Toro's style and that makes me think that this film would have been better directed by that director. Del Toro knows how to tell a dramatic story with monsters or fantasy elements and he should have directed this film. El Hombre Del Saco is only recommended as a curiosity for those who want to know a little about the Spanish version of the Boogeyman, but it doesn't have much to offer. It will probably be an enjoyable film for a younger audience because it seems to be made for them. My final rating for this film is 7/10.

Grim Spanish horror film starring a group of children, including chills, mystery and a lot of creepy surprises.

Spanish mystery film with full of thrills, suspense, chiller , eerie intrigue, plot twists , dark atmosphere , and otherworldly happenings. After the death of their father, three brothers move with their mother to a small town. They soon discover that in recent months there have been mysterious disappearances of several children, and they will embark on an adventure against time to discover the truth hidden behind the terrifying legend of what is known as "The Boogeyman". El hombre del saco (2023) explores the Spanish origins of the character's story, where he is a tuberculosis patient from Almeria who will do anything to get well, even consuming the blood of the kids he kidnaps in a sack.

This gloomy terror film contains thrills, intrigue, adventures, chills, and it connects with a dark episode in our history and the style of addressing young audiences. This is an entertaining and fun family film proposal, although it seems prudent to reserve it for somewhat older children, since its effect may be excessive grim on the little ones. Resulting to be a misunderstood adaptation of Stephen King stories with shortcomings and fallures. There is a somewhat uneven mix of genres, so I have been able to detect that it takes parts from other films and styles, swallowing North American references with the children riding their bicycles and while investigating the origins of the monster, of which I would include the following: "Stranger Things", ¨Goonies¨, ¨Stand by me¨, ¨Super 8¨ and even adding the Spanish ¨Verano Azul¨. This is an amusing mess, the goal was to pay homage to horror and adventure movies of the '70s and 80s. Thus the film will not please the general public at all, that's why it is too terrifying for children and has too much protagonism of childish people which will not please the most adults. The result is not entirely satisfactory: it is much less scary than expected. There's a few familiar faces in the cast , such as: Macarena Gómez, Manolo Solo , Ruth Gabriel y the prodigy girl Luna Fulgencio . And special apperance from Javier Botet. The latter often plays supernatural villains as ghosts, monsters, witches, demons, etc. At a special effects workshop , the tutor suggested him that his height and long arms and fingers would be perfect for monster make-up . Javier Botet has a genetic disorder known as Marfan Syndrome, plays an important role in helping the body grow and develop properly, he is very tall and thin and he is reportedly 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 123 pounds , that's why he uses to play weird and fantastic secondary roles , such as : Slender Man, Insidious , Alien: Covenant , The conjuring 2 , Rec 1, Rec 2 , Rec 3 Génesis, Rec 4 Apocalypse, The Crucifixion , The mummy, The Invisible Guardian, among others.

Adding a dark and sinister cinematography by Javier Salmones, he's a cameraman expert on dark atmosphere, such as: ¨La posesión de Emma Evans¨, ¨Christmas Tale¨, ¨Blind Alley¨, ¨Rottweiler¨, or ¨Romasanta¨. The motion picture was unevenly directed by Ángel Gómez Hernández, although with not much originality because we have already seen many terrifying situations in other films . His fim debut was 'Voces', he previously made Shorts: ¨Y la muerte lo seguia¨, ¨El perdón¨, ¨Behind¨, ¨Cariño¨, ¨Silent Weeeping¨ , ¨Sed de luz¨ , ¨Lagrimas de papel¨, and he also directed another much better horror film: ¨Voces¨ (2020). ¨El hombre del saco¨ (2023) rating : 5,5/10. Acceptable horror movie. It is a passable but wasted revision of the legend of the child abductor. And the result is too complicated for children, and a little disturbing and strange too.

    Spanish boogieman

El hombre del saco. An Urban leyend, the boogieman from Spain. If you are a bad kid el hombre del saco will come for you. Gilt is a magnet for him. A group of brave kids face him. Obviously in a time before moviles, when kids rode bicicles and played in the streets. IT and strangers things also viewed the need for that.

The effects are really good and convincing. The acting also is good and i see real caracters renembering that more of the cast are teenagers.

I liked and smiled remembering the crazy idea my brother and I had once: look for the hombre del saco to kill him. Our parents though we were lost and had a really bad evening.

A cheap copy of Stranger Things

As in some American movies, the initial premise is good and full of potential but it goes to waste so soon. However, 5 minutes in and you can predict the rest of the plot. It has chances to be original, but it misses them all.

The scares are visually entertaining but too abundant and loud. It misses the goal of maintaining you tense.

But the most hurtful aspect of the movie is the dedication to look, sound, and happen as in stranger things. I don't deny that a viewer who somehow missed that series can enjoy this movie. But for the rest of the mortals, it's unavoidable to think you are watching a cheap Indian copy of the series. It hurts to watch.

On a more positive note, some of the actors are fairly good, and the effects are good. The only thing that feels professional in this movie.

Spanish cinema has way more to offer than this.

The Bogeyman returns once every seven years since his death in 1910 (thus the first attack was in 1917). Kino was kidnapped in 1966 (he claims to be part of the harvest of '66); that is, the eighth attack. The film takes place in 2022 (the sixteenth attack), because Paula mentions how "last year" she had tied herself to the tree, and there is a newspaper clipping, dated 2021, covering that event.
