MNL 143 was a finalist at the new breed category of the Cinemalaya Film Festival 2012 in the Philippines. It was controversially disqualified due to a casting dispute with some members of the screening committee. Director/Writer Emerson Reyes opted to insist on his very able cast (veteran actors Alan Paule and Joy Viado) and seek funding and grants from other sources.
