The minds behind the Spider-Verse movies are bringing another classic comics series to the big screen. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have signed on to produce a feature film based on Archie Comics, the teen humor series that's been steadily chugging along since 1941. There's no word yet whether the film will be live-action or animated: Lord and Miller have produced both, with their latest, the live-action science fiction epic Project Hail Mary, set to hit theaters next year.

According to reports, the film's script is being written by Tom King, a veteran comic book scribe whose Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow series will be adapted into next year's Supergirlfilm. He's...

More “Archie”
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) will produce a new live-action “Archie” movie for Universal Pictures, scripted by Tom King (“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”) reportedly inspired, by the comic book title “Archie: The Married Life”, presenting two alternate futures — one in which Archie marries girl-next-door ‘Betty Cooper’ and one where he marries spoiled sex-pot ‘Veronica Lodge’:

Producers are Emma Watts with “Archie Comics” CEO publisher Jon Goldwater and Aditya Sood, president of Lord Miller.

Universal Pictures’ Britt Hennemuth and Christine Sun will oversee the feature for the studio.

The "Archie" character debuted in "Pep Comics" #22, December 22, 1941, illustrated by Bob Montana and written by Vic Bloom…

… with the intent by comics publisher John L. Goldwater to appeal to fans of the "Andy Hardy" movies starring actor Mickey Rooney.

"Archie Comics", the title of the company's longest running publication, first appeared on newstands in 1942.

Image
Archie Comics and its various spin-offs have remained incredibly popular over the years (it's been over 8 decades since the first publication), and The CW's Riverdale series introduced a new generation to Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and friends.

It was probably only a matter of time before the property was revisited, and we now have word on two separate projects currently in development for the big and small screens.

First reported by Jeff Sneider in his newsletter and since backed-up by the trades, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are set to produce an Archie movie for Universal Pictures, with Comic book writer Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) on board to pen the script.

Riverdale (2017)
Zombie outbreak comic Afterlife with Archie may be getting a series adaptation at Disney+
Riverdale (2017)
The comic book character Archie Andrews was created in 1941 by publisher John L. Goldwater and artist Bob Montana, in collaboration with writer Vic Bloom, but one of his most popular iterations was in the TV series Riverdale, a show that had a harder edge than the average Archie comic book. Created by by Archie Comics’ chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Riverdale ran on The CW for seven seasons, from 2017 to 2023. It’s been a quiet couple of years since Riverdale went off the air, but now there appears to be two Archie projects in development at the same time. We just shared the news that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are producing an Archie movie for Universal, and now we can also share that industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider is reporting that a series adaptation of the zombie outbreak comic Afterlife with Archie is in the works at Disney+.

An Archie movie is in the works with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller producing
Phil Lord
Among other credits, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have made The Lego Movie, brought 21 Jump Street to the big screen, and have been shepherding the animated Spider-Verse films through the long, difficult process of making their way out into the world – and now, they’ve set their sights on Archie. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a feature adaptation of the Archie comic books is in the works at Universal Pictures, with Lord and Miller producing.

Set in the fictional and idyllic Midwestern community of Riverdale, the Archie comics center on teenager Archie Andrews and his interactions with other characters like Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, Josie and the Pussycats, and more.

Tom King, an award-winning comic book artist who was a key consultant on James Gunn’s Superman, is writing the script for the Archie movie. The upcoming Supergirl movie is based on King’s comic book Woman of Tomorrow,...

Archie Comics Movie In Development With Spider-Verse Creators
Image
Archie Comics is heading to the big screen as a new movie is in the works. In the ever-growing comic book and superhero adaptations across TV and film, Hollywood has mostly focused on DC and Marvel properties over the last two decades, but that may be about to change, as Archie Comics is looking to make a jump to the world of cinema.

Universal Pictures is developing an Archie Comics-related movie from Spider-Verse's Phil Lord and Chris Miller. DC Comics scribe and DC Studios architect Tom King is set to write the script for the project, which currently doesn't have an official title.

As of right now, it has not been confirmed if the Archie Comics movie will be live-action or animated. The movie development comes two years after Riverdale, a darker live-action take on the Archie Comics franchise, ended its run on The CW. Lord and Miller gave the...

There's 1 Thing This Riverdale Star Misses About The CW's "Bizarre & Insane" Archie Adaptation
Image
One of Riverdale'sbiggest stars shared some insight into one of their most-missed aspects of the series. It's been nearly two years since Riverdale's ending, and the cast has ventured into separate projects. Madelaine Petsch played Cheryl Blossom throughout the hit Archie adaptation and is about to appear in the upcoming horror movie, The Strangers: Chapter 2.

Screen Rant's Ash Crossan attended San Diego Comic-Con 2025, and in an interview with Madelaine Petsch for The Strangers: Chapter 2, had an opportunity to speak about Riverdale. Petsch described missing her Riverdale co-stars while attending the convention, stating, "This is my first Comic-Con sans Riverdale, and it's definitely strange walking around without my crew."

Madelaine Petsch also shared her perspective on how Riverdale developed over time, demonstrating her appreciation for the "bizarre and insane" aspects of the series. She explained that, despite the variety of reactions the show garnered, Riverdale "is still so beloved in this place,...

'Was I Good Enough?': Jason Isaacs Explains Why He Almost Backed Out of The White Lotus Season 3
Image
Jason Isaacs had reservations with his role in The White Lotus Season 3; he nailed the audition and got the part, but hesitated after reading Timothy Ratliff's backstory. He took on the challenge and pulled it off, thanks in part to co-star Parker Posey.

It's hard to imagine another actor playing Timothy Ratliff in The White Lotus, but Jason Isaac confirmed others had turned down the role before his audition. In an interview with Deadline, Isaacs said it was difficult to portray a compelling character who’s always under the influence. “Tim’s a guy who’s out of his head for five or six episodes on downers, not on entertaining uppers like Murray Bartlett was in Season 1. And with virtually no words to communicate this enormous story he’s got,” he explained.

The role proved a challenge, despite Isaac’s impressive acting history; his nuanced performance (as Cary Grant) in Archie showcased his range,...

All the Great ’60s and ’70s Songs in ‘Duster’
Image
We love the groovy 1970s setting in the Max series “Duster,” with long hair, tight jeans, fast cars and a dy-no-mite soundtrack.

We not only hear the ’70s jams you might expect, like Rare Earth’s “I Just Want to Celebrate” and “All Right Now” by Free, but some much more obscure songs that might stump Shazam.

Here are all the songs in each episode so far, many of them blaring out of the stereo of Josh Holloway’s rad muscle car. And the main title song is from co-creator J.J. Abrams (who crafted the series along with Latoya Morgan). He also crafted the intro themes for previous shows “Lost” and “Alias.”

Morgan told TheWrap that she personally picked Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” for Episode 4, in which Holloway’s character Jim Ellis drag races on the open desert freeway with Benjamin Charles Watson (Royce Saxton) in a priceless car owned...

‘The White Lotus’ Star Jason Isaacs Reveals The Truth Behind All Those Rumors And Why He Almost Turned Down The Role: “I Was Scared Of It”
Image
Jason Isaacs made his movie debut in 1989, in British romcom The Tall Guy, and has worked solidly ever since. He’s used to being recognized, mostly for his role as Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter, but also for his small-screen work in The Oa and Star Trek spin-offs. He expects that, given the fanatical audiences they attract, but he’s been blindsided by the amount of attention he’s had since the April finale of Mike White’s hit HBO show The White Lotus, in which he plays shady U.S. businessman Tim Ratliff.

“For the last few weeks, I’ve been recognized a lot, and in the most surprising places,” notes the deadpan 62-year-old Brit as he makes short work of a mushroom donburi at London’s White City House. “But that’s what usually happens: I’ll be recognized for a few weeks, and then it stops. I...

'The Most Irritating Voice': Jason Isaacs Talks Coming Up With The White Lotus and Harry Potter Accents
Image
Throughout his career, Jason Isaacs had many impressive roles, including roles in franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, and even becoming Cary Grant in Archie. However, one of his most popular roles was in Harry Potter, and now the hit HBO series The White Lotus.

The role of Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and The White Lotus' Timothy Ratliff were vastly different, and not just because of the magical element from the fantasy series, but also because of the accents. Lucius was from the UK, while Tim was a successful businessman from North Carolina. During a new appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Isaacs explained how he managed his spot-on Southern accent, and how he shocked Harry Potter director Chris Columbus with his initial take on Lucius.

"The internet was concerned with two things," Isaacs explained about his The White Lotus role. "My penis and my accent.

Look out, Riverdale! Kevin Smith writing Archie meets Jay & Silent Bob comic
Image
THR reports that Kevin Smith is bringing the View Askewniverse to Archie Comics. The Clerks writer/director is writing a double-sized crossover comic titled Kevin Smith Presents: Archie Meets Jay & Silent Bob.

The comic will be set after the events of Clerks III, which ended with a significant death, but Smith says, “Archie plays a role in the healing” when the iconic character gets a summer job at the Quick Shop and befriends Randal Graves. “Not only is this my stab at a classic American franchise that existed long before me that I read as a kid … It’s a midlife crisis project about death and learning to deal,” Smith explained.

Smith has long been a fan of Archie comics, and he wrote the first draft for the comic just one day after Archie creative executive Jesse Goldwater pitched him the idea. “Kevin has always been one of my creative heroes,...

John Erwin: The voice actor famous for portraying He-Man and Morris the Cat has died at 88
Image
It’s a sad day in Eternia as news about the passing of John Erwin, the voice actor behind He-Man, Morris the Cat, and other notable pop culture icons. Erwin, a Saturday morning staple of the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, died last month of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California. He was 88. Celebworx, the PR firm representing Mr. Erwin, announced his death this Friday afternoon.

Few people of the Elder Millenial generation (people born between 1980 and 1985) grew up without hearing John Erwin as He-man, Master of the Universe, match wits with Skeletor (Alan Oppenheimer) while battling the forces of evil. In addition to voicing He-Man and the Archie Comics character Reggie, Erwin played the unenthusiastic spokescat for 9Lives brand cat food, Morris the Cat. In the promos, Morris, a large orange tabby tomcat, snarkily remarked about being uninterested in anything except when it came to a delicious can of 9Lives cat food.

John Erwin, Voice Actor in ‘He-Man’ and ‘Archie’ Cartoons, Dies at 88
Image
John Erwin, the reclusive actor who provided the voices for the heroic title character in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and the vain frenemy Reggie Mantle in a series of Archie cartoons, has died. He was 88.

Erwin died of natural causes “around Dec. 20” in his home in Camarillo, California, his reps at the PR firm Celebworx announced.

Earlier, Erwin was seen on camera when he recurred as the cattle driver Teddy on CBS’ Rawhide, starring Clint Eastwood.

‘Gavin & Stacey’ Star Laura Aikman Kept Sonia’s Finale Appearance Secret From Her Own Family: ‘I Take an NDA Very Seriously’
Image
“Gavin & Stacey” star Laura Aikman took her NDA so seriously she even kept her appearance in the 90-minute special a secret from her own family.

Aikman, who plays the widely-disliked Sonia in the cult BBC series, posted a video of herself watching “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” on Christmas Day with her family, who appeared to have no idea she was about to make an appearance on screen. In the scene, James Corden, who co-created and stars in the series, is shown into a room to meet his “bride-to-be,” with the audience led to assume it’s his on-again-off-again partner Nessa (fellow co-creator Ruth Jones). Instead, it’s Sonia.

In the video Aikman showed her family screaming with surprise as they watched the scene, with Aikman laughing while a woman who appears to be her mother shouts “Oh my God… you never told me!”

Aikman captioned the video: “I take an NDA very seriously.

As Monsters and Critics reported, Prince Harry and Meghan’s card was sent out last year without photographs of their children included.

Prince Harry and Meghan have two young children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, and they keep them out of photographs as much as possible.

Fans love to see glimpses of them or their cousins across the pond, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are in the news more often than their cousins, but seeing how they have grown is still a delight.

This year, Prince Harry and Meghan have decided to share a photo of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in their photomontage of a Christmas/Holiday Card.

5 Times Sonic the Hedgehog Got Way, Way Too Dark
Image
While the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise may be known for its fast-paced, zippy, and exaggeratedly colorful aesthetic and joyously springy characters, the comics have touched on some much darker stuff. The term “Dark Sonic,” popularly referring to the Sonic X show, has its origins in the Sonic comics published by Archie Comics.

While often visually limited for its younger audiences, there are an uncomfortable number of comic moments when Sonic gets way too dark, mostly in the series published by Archie Comics. Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog series ran an impressive 290 issues until 2016. Considering the lightheartedness of the source material, it’s mindblowing how intense this initial series proved to be. The series skyrocketed in popularity, inspiring several other Sonic series, each with overtly serious undertones and dark plot points, but the Archie series launched it all.

Patt Shea, Writer on ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Archie Bunker’s Place,’ Dies at 93
Image
Patt Shea, the Norman Lear regular who co-wrote the 1979 series finale of All in the Family and co-created and worked on two spinoffs of the fabled sitcom, Archie Bunker’s Place and Gloria, has died. She was 93.

Shea died April 12 of natural causes on her birthday at her home in Sherman Oaks, her son Michael Shea, a director and assistant director, told The Hollywood Reporter. The family chose to wait until this week to publicly announce her death.

“Patt Shea was a trailblazer in comedy writing,” Michael noted. “Her success as a writer in groundbreaking sitcoms was only matched by her generosity and compassion for people.”

Jack Shea, her husband of 59 years, died in 2013. He directed dozens of episodes of such Lear-connected sitcoms as The Jeffersons, Silver Spoons and Sanford and Son and served as president of the DGA from 1997-2002, part of a half-century of dedicated service to the guild.

Archie’s House of Horror: Kardak The Mystic

I miss the good ol’ days of magic.

I suppose what I really miss is life’s simplicity; how the lack of options brought folks together. No time was wasted endlessly scrolling through various streaming apps to find the perfect viewing experience, just to abandon it all and stare at our respective devices. Back in my day, if there was an event on television, that’s what you were watching with your family. And magic specials were a huge part of my television-viewing youth. I remember scouring the TV Guide, and finding out that evening there would be a special magic event—whether it was David Copperfield, Lance Burton, Penn and Teller, or the various magicians featured on The World’s Greatest Magic. There was something so exciting about our family getting together to marvel at these gods among regular folk, the fascinating mix of entertainment and bewilderment—could these mentalists truly read minds?...

Legion of Super-Heroes Is the Greatest DC Comics Series You’ve Never Read
Image
The Justice League. The Teen Titans. Heck, even the Outsiders. Most comic readers know these superhero teams from DC Comics, and can probably name at least a few key members, if not favorite stories.

But for a while in the 1980s, one team topped them all, rivaling even Chris Claremont’s X-Men run for comic shop supremacy: Legion of Super-Heroes won over readers with its futuristic space opera and its cast of unique characters.

The basic premise of the Legion of Super-Heroes is simple. 1000 years in the future, a group of superpowered teens take inspiration from Superboy and become heroes, most using powers they gained from their native planets. Like the best Superman stories, Legion tales tend to be optimistic and hopeful, certain that humanity can overcome its problems and work toward a better tomorrow.

But actually reading the Legion can be a bit daunting. Because of the future setting,...

Alvvays’ Debut Turns 10: Celebrating the Best Indie-Pop Record of the 2010s
Image
This February, Alvvays took a moment to think about how far they’d come. The Canadian indie-pop group was standing on the red carpet at the 66th Grammy Awards, a sentence that might have sounded delightfully absurd once. But their song “Belinda Says” — a shimmering highlight from 2022’s Blue Rev that interpolated a lyric from Belinda Carlile — was nominated for Best Alternative Music Performance, so there were lead singer Molly Rankin, keyboardist Kerri MacLellan, guitarist Alec O’Hanley, and drummer Sheridan Riley, answering questions on the same glitzy path walked that...

Archie’s House of Horror: Archie Comics: Judgment Day
Image
Well, look at that, we’re up to my lucky number thirteenth Archie’s House of Horrors. And I can’t imagine a better title to celebrate that milestone than Archie Comics: Judgment Day. After all, who doesn’t love talking about the end of the world?

It’s no mystery why apocalyptic settings are, ironically, a fertile playground for horror stories. The stories basically write themselves, as whether we consciously admit it or not, we’re always consumed by the fear of the end of the world. We’re constantly reminded of the doomsday clock and its hands shifting ever closer to midnight. Every day the world throws a new curveball at us and gives us stark reminders that life on planet Earth is not infinite.

That’s why, perhaps, there’s some fun in creating fiction about the end of the world. It gives us the control to...

Why The Knuckles TV Show Owes a Debt to a Derided Sonic Series
Image
This article contains spoilers for the entire Knuckles live-action TV-series.

Knuckles the Echidna. He’s rougher than the rest of them, the best of them, tougher than leather, as his famous theme song boasts. Introduced all the way back in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Sega Genesis as the titular hero’s nemesis, the spike fisted loner has gone on to become a key part of the franchise’s cast. Reinterpreted over the years as everything from a rapping treasure hunter in Sonic Adventure to a chosen-one savior that, as a baby egg, was nuked by radiation in the Archie comic series.

The Sonic movies haven’t been shy about drawing direct inspiration from past incarnations of the franchise to help inspire their stories so where does the Knuckles series take its main inspiration from? The Genesis games with their lightning quick action? The much-beloved Sonic Adventure series and its focus on Knuckles’ treasure hunting?...

Image
Fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog video games will be having to keep their eyes and ears open for Easter eggs hidden throughout the upcoming Knuckles series. There will be many nods to various games from the franchise, and a couple have already been revealed ahead of the show's premiere on Paramount+

John Whittington developed the series alongside Toby Ascher. In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Whittington commented on the Easter eggs that can be found in Knuckles. One example he gave is that there's a ski resort named "Ice Cap," a reference to the "IceCap Zone" area featured in the original Sonic the Hedgehog 3 video game. He also said that there will be some "casino-adjacent material" as a way of acknowledging the "Casino Night Zone." As Whittington explained:
