Animation did fairly well in the early years of the pandemic, even when other kinds of films were struggling. Besides the massively successful Minions: The Rise of Gru and Sing 2, DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys emerged as a surprise sleeper hit. The movie made $250 million globally, against a budget of around $80 million. Since then, DreamWorks’ has also witnessed major success with films such as Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Kung Fu Panda 4, and The Wild Robot— each of these films was produced in the same, under $100 million budget range. And now, this group has a new member: The Bad Guys 2.
Also produced on an $80 million budget, the movie made around $22 million domestically and another $22 million from overseas markets, for a cumulative global haul of $44 million. By comparison, the recent Pixar flop Elio grossed $20 million domestically and $35 million worldwide in its opening weekend, and it did this with a...

Even though practically every other kind of movie was underperforming at the box office a few years ago, animated films were doing dependably well. Minions: The Rise of Gru nearly grossed $1 billion worldwide in 2022, while Sing 2 made over $400 million globally in 2021. Among these hits was DreamWorks' The Bad Guys, a heist comedy film directed by Pierre Perifel, which made exactly $250 million globally and nearly $100 million at the domestic box office. DreamWorks has now released a follow-up to the movie, which is looking at an identical opening weekend haul after earning excellent reviews from both critics and audiences.

Netflix US is cleaning out its August 2025 list, so watch your favorites before they disappear. This time, three animated hits are rolling off the platform in a tight two-week stretch. The streaming platform only posts the “last day” each title is visible, so move your viewing up by one full day. After midnight on those dates, the shows and movies vanish from both the catalog and your Continue Watching row.
This time, we have hits that feature a fairy-tale boarding-school series, a kung-fu follow-up, and a comedy about a baby in a suit. While they have earned huge numbers at the box office, sadly, their time on Netflix will end soon. So, what are you waiting for? Grab snacks and text the group chat before the window closes.

With “The Bad Guys 2,” Universal hopes for some mid-budget success with families before kids return to school. But for producers DreamWorks Animation, this marks a key step in the company’s efforts to build new franchises from the ground up in an entertainment landscape littered with loud and shiny alternatives.
“The Bad Guys” hit theaters in spring 2022 at a time when it was still unclear how willing families were to return to theaters after the Covid-19 shutdown. Against a reported $70 million budget, the film made a respectable $250 million worldwide, and two years later, a sequel was announced.
That sequel, which arrives this weekend and is projected to match or slightly exceed its predecessor’s $24.9 million domestic opening, is the first follow-up to an animated film released after the shutdown. There have been sequels to other films released in the past four years, namely horror titles like “Smile” and “M3GAN,...

As the final month of the summer box office season begins, theaters will have a trio of demo-targeting films — adult comedy, family animation and body horror — to offer moviegoers alongside returning “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and the other four-quadrant tentpoles from July’s slate.
On tap for the big screen: Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys 2,” Paramount’s revival of the George Bush-era comedy “The Naked Gun,” and Neon’s critically lauded date night film from hell “Together.”
None of these films are projected to take No. 1 from “Fantastic Four,” but “Bad Guys 2” is projected to take the No. 2 spot with an opening weekend in the $20 million range against an $80 million budget. The first “Bad Guys” earned a $23.9 million opening in April 2022 and went on to earn $97 million domestic and $250 million worldwide.
“The Naked Gun” is projected to take third with an opening in the mid-to-high teens.

The Bad Guys 2 keeps DreamWorks' strong Rotten Tomatoes streak alive. A sequel to 2022's The Bad Guys, the upcoming animated heist comedy brings back the Bad Guys who, having a hard time earning trust and fitting into their new roles as Good Guys, are coaxed out of retirement and team up with an all-female crew of criminals for one final heist.
The sequel's voice cast includes Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Awkwafina, Zazie Beetz, Richard Ayoade, Lilly Singh, and Alex Borstein reprising their roles from the first film. Oscar nominees Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), and five-time Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne join the cast.

Elio Box Office Wrap-Up: Pixar’s Sci-Fi Adventure Stalls At $138M ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Elio arrived in theaters with the weight of Pixar’s legacy behind it, but the film’s journey has been anything but smooth. Only last year, insiders spoke of the struggles DreamWorks faced with Kung Fu Panda 4, which, despite a rough production, ended up being a box office hit.
On the other hand, Pixar released Elio quietly, perhaps hoping to avoid attention if things went wrong. Soon after its record-low opening, reports surfaced from those who worked on the movie, revealing a troubled production that pushed the studio into one of its most disappointing chapters.

It was only last year that several insiders revealed what a turbulent production DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda 4 went through under the leadership of director Mike Mitchell. The movie earned mediocre reviews, but emerged as a box office hit. This year, the self-aware Pixar quietly released the new original film Elio, perhaps preempting trouble. Not too long after it debuted with a record-low opening weekend haul, people who claimed to have worked on the project told The Hollywood Reporter what went down behind the scenes. Elio is now nearing the end of its theatrical run, poised to become the biggest flop in Pixar's history.
The movie has made only around $130 million at the worldwide box office, against a budget that has been reported to be as high as $200 million. HBO Max is about to add a former record holder to its streaming library. Kung Fu Panda 2, which used to hold the record for the highest-grossing film from a female director, will join the streaming service at the top of next month.
Beginning Aug. 1, Kung Fu Panda 2 will be available to stream on HBO Max. The animated martial arts comedy sequel follows Jack Black's Po, the titular Kung Fu Panda, as he travels to Gongmen City with the Furious Five — Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), Crane (David Cross), and Monkey (Jackie Chan) — to stop the peacock Lord Shen (Gary Oldman) from conquering China while also learning about his forgotten past. Kung Fu Panda 2 was produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount in 2011, where it received largely positive reviews from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes noting a "certified fresh" approval rating of 82%.

The past two years have been great for animation. Last year, half of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024 were animated: Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Kung Fu Panda 4,with all but two earning Fresh scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with Despicable Me 4 and Mufasa just narrowly missing the mark at 56%.
Animation has reigned supreme once again in 2025, with China's animated movie Ne Zha 2 ranking as the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide with over $2 billion at the box office. Meanwhile, KPop Demon Hunters is dominating Netflix. Dreamworks' Dog Man, which debuted in January, was a modest success that earned an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score and made over $145 million at the box office.

Having completed a full month of release in theaters worldwide, Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake has firmly established itself as a hit. It wasn't a foregone conclusion, especially with a few other live-action remakes underperforming at the box office recently. One of them, Snow White, was an outright bomb, having grossed just over $200 million against a reported budget of over $250 million. Not only did How to Train Your Dragon cost less than that film, it has also generated over twice as much as it did globally. This weekend, it overtook as many as six beloved animated hits.
With $240 million domestically and $320 million from overseas markets, How to Train Your Dragon's cumulative global haul currently stands at $560 million. It reportedly cost $150 million to produce, which is relatively low for a tent pole of this magnitude. We must remember that the movie was always supposed to spawn sequels and...

Hulu’s King of the Hill revival has a trailer, as well as a new member of its voice cast.
Comedian and Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng has joined the animated series to voice Kahn Souphanousinphone, Hank’s (Mike Judge) Laotian neighbor, in the show’s 14th season. Toby Huss voiced the character during the show’s 13-season run on Fox from 1997-2010.
In addition to The Daily Show, Chieng’s credits also include Crazy Rich Asians, M3GAN, Hulu’s Interior Chinatown and voice work on Kung Fu Panda 4 and episodes of Fox’s Grimsburg and Krapopolis.
The King of the Hill trailer shows Hank and Peggy (Kathy Najimy) returning to their Arlen, Texas, home after Hank retires from the propane business — to the delight of neighbors Boomhauer, Bill Dauterive and Dale Gribble — while a now-adult Bobby (Pamela Adlon) is working as a chef and dabbling in brewing beer.

There is a new champion of Hollywood movies at the 2025 box office. With its take over the long Fourth of July holiday weekend, Disney's live-action "Lilo & Stitch" remake has surpassed "A Minecraft Movie" as the biggest American movie of the year globally. Chinese animated blockbuster "Ne-Zha 2" still stands heads and shoulders above the rest with more than $2 billion to its name, but so far as Hollywood productions go, Disney is now on top.
"Jurassic World Rebirth" opened to a massive $322 million globally over the weekend, taking the lion's share of attention. However, "Lilo & Stitch" pulled in another $13.7 million on its seventh weekend, including $2.8 million domestically. That brings its running total to $972.7 million worldwide, including $408.5 million domestically and $564.2 million internationally thus far. It's now all but assured to become the first Hollywood release of the year to crack the $1 billion mark.

An animated sci-fi movie with an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score becomes an instant streaming hit in America three months after its $15 million box office. After a disappointing post-pandemic run, Pixar bounced back last year with the record-breaking Inside Out 2. The movie didn’t merely outperform its predecessor, but it ended up becoming the highest-grossing animated movie ever released — a record that has since been broken by the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2. For a while, it seemed like the studio’s problems were over after a particularly dark period that saw layoffs and losses. But its latest film, Elio, has sent it right back to square one. With barely a marketing push, Elio delivered the lowest opening in Pixar history, falling short of even the original Toy Story, which debuted three decades ago.
With $21 million domestically and another $14 million from overseas markets, Elio’s cumulative global box office debut stands at $35 million. Unlike other animation houses, which have drastically cut down costs in recent years, Pixar continues to spend top dollar on its projects.

2005 saw the release of Peter Jackson's "King Kong," an effort to bring the classic 1933 movie into the age of the modern CGI blockbuster. Jackson's version of the black-and-white Hollywood epic came with the surprising casting of Jack Black, normally associated with silly comedy roles, as the desperate filmmaker Carl Denham. It was an impressive turn from Black in a darker role (Jackson's take on "King Kong" essentially cast Denham as the villain of the piece), showcasing the actor's dramatic chops. However, Black actually went on to outdo his performance in the movie with his performance in the tie-in video game.
"Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie," released ahead of the movie, was a seriously impressive video game adaptation. Garnering much praise, the game not only received input from Jackson but also saw the full cast of the film reprise their roles. This included Black,...

After a weak start to the year, the box office is benefitting from an unlikely savior — PG films.
As movie theater attendance, at long last, begins to rebound, at least part of the newfound success is being attributed to PG films like the Warner Bros. video game adaptation “A Minecraft Movie” ($951 million), Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake ($858 million) and Universal’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” ($197 million in its opening weekend). Since January, PG films have earned $1.53 billion, accounting for 41% of the year-to-date revenue. It’s the highest percentage of any rating this year, according to Comscore.
That’s notable because it’s usually PG-13 films that generate the biggest bucks. Since 2000, movies rated PG-13 by the MPA have dominated the box office and often command more than 50% of the total marketshare. Animation has never been more at risk, from the threat of AI replacing animators, to studio consolidation scrapping projects because the big bosses don't care about the medium, or studios straight-up shutting down all in-house productions.
What animation studios remain in production are all focused on one single thing: franchising. As if the IP craze of live-action wasn't enough, the big animation studios like Disney, Warner Bros., and DreamWorks are singularly focused on growing their IP, churning out sequel after sequel (with the occasional original story here and there as a treat). Of course, this isn't automatically a bad thing. Take DreamWorks, who is arguably the champion of animated trilogies, and who, in 2022 delivered one of the best animated movies of the decade with "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish."
Since then, DreamWorks has delivered lackluster sequels to successful movies, like "Trolls Band Together" and the disappointing "Kung Fu Panda 4.

Since then, DreamWorks has delivered lackluster sequels to successful movies, like "Trolls Band Together" and the disappointing "Kung Fu Panda 4.

Chris Sanders’ Miyazaki-Inspired Film Is DreamWorks’ Only Animated Masterpiece After Prince Of Egypt
DreamWorks had a solid 2024, delivering animated hits like Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Wild Robot. While the studio continued its tradition of box office hits, the latter received the kind of critical acclaim that had been missing since its early days with masterpieces like The Prince of Egypt.
During an interview, the movie’s director, Chris Sanders, opened up about bringing The Wild Robot to life. He admitted to taking inspiration from the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, which might explain why the movie was so well-received by critics and audiences alike. Here is what Sanders had to say about Miyazaki’s influence on The Wild Robot.

Tom Cruise just pulled another Ethan Hunt-level stunt, this time at the Chinese box office. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning parachuted into theaters and boom, the man’s already breaking records like they’re fragile Imf rules. While the film didn’t explode out of the gate with Top Gun: Maverick speed, it still managed to jetpack its way to the third biggest Hollywood opening of 2025 in China. Not bad for a guy outrunning AI and his own franchise’s finish line.
With Cruise’s ever-loyal fanbase, some slick action, and that signature sprint, Final Reckoning’s off to a solid start. China clearly still has a soft spot for the man who does his own stunts and somehow never ages. Looks like Ethan Hunt’s farewell tour might be more cha-ching than ciao. So buckle up, because this mission’s already turning into a box office thrill ride,...

The year 2025 was especially noteworthy for animated movies. Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 both cracked the $1 billion mark worldwide, while Despicable Me 4 made nearly $1 billion itself, and Mufasa: The Lion King grossed more than $700 million worldwide. Even Kung Fu Panda 4 managed to crack the half-billion mark globally. However, there was a notable outlier. Paramount's Transformers One tanked at the box office despite having earned the best-ever reviews for a Transformers movie. It is now redeeming itself on the Paramount+ streaming charts.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie claimed the number 10 spot on Paramount+ on Wednesday, earning a total of 39 points. It has been averaging 66 points a day this year, having found spots inside the top 10 on 122 days. The movie is also available on HBO Max and iTunes. Kristen Wiig plays an eccentric, if not villainous cat lady in the trailer for Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie from DreamWorks Animation, which dropped an official trailer on Thursday ahead of a Sept. 26, 2025 theatrical release.
The Ryan Crego-directed hybrid live-action and animated film has Laila Lockhart Kraner reprising her titular role from the Gabby’s Dollhouse TV series, and on a road trip with her Grandma Gigi, played by Gloria Estefan, to the urban wonderland of Cat Francisco.
But when Gabby’s dollhouse ends up in the hands of oddball cat lady Vera (Wiig), Gabby, now wearing her magical cat ears, and Grandma Gigi on board as back-up set off to save the dollhouse before it’s too late.

AMC Entertainment’s first-quarter financial results for 2025 reflect a difficult period for theatrical exhibition, as revenues declined and net losses widened. Despite the numbers, CEO Adam Aron maintained that the performance should not be interpreted as a reflection of waning audience interest in moviegoing, arguing instead that the sluggish box office in the first three months of the year was an isolated event already being corrected by a much stronger second quarter.
The company reported a net loss of $202.1 million for the January through March period, an increase from a $163.5 million loss during the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue fell to $862.5 million, down from $951.4 million in Q1 2024, marking a 9% year-over-year decline. Admissions revenue dropped 11% to $473.5 million, and concessions fell nearly 12% to $283.4 million.

A Hollywood box office slowdown led AMC Entertainment Holdings to post sharply lower first quarter revenue and a quarterly loss in the first quarter of 2025.
The parent of AMC Theatres recorded revenue of $862.5 million for the three months to March 31, which is down 9 percent from a year-earlier revenue line at $951.4 million. The mega-exhibitor also widened its first quarter loss to $202.1 million, down nearly 36 percent from a year-earlier loss of $163.5 million.
AMC Theatres had a tough comparison with the first quarter of 2024, when Dune: Part 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4 played on its screens. During the latest financial quarter, tentpoles like Disney’s Snow White failing to perform well left it to Christmas holdovers like Moana 2 and Wicked to drive recent box office.
Across the exhibition sector, the domestic box office in the first quarter fell 11.5 percent year-on-year. AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron in a statement told investors to...

After the worst March the box office has seen in 30 years, there was a question of what happened to the usual spring bump in business that theaters enjoy. Turns out it came just a month late.
“March was dismal, and that’s being kind. It was down 46% from last year. Then, April was up more than 100%. To have that inconsistency through the first quarter of the year is a big cause for concern, even given the usual ups and downs that the industry has always had,” said Comscore analyst Paul Dergabedian.
Thanks primarily to Warner Bros.’ dynamic duo of “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners,” domestic grosses for April reached $873 million, a 220% increase from the anemic $396 million reported for March.
Combine that with the first weekend of May, led by the $76 million opening of Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts*,” has pushed North American grosses to more than $1 billion since April 1.
“Minecraft” has been the top grosser with $383 million,...

Deadline Hollywood's latest financial deep dive reveals a striking trend in 2024's most profitable films: animation reigns supreme. While social media commentary bemoans the lack of originality in movies these days, particularly in regard to the number of sequels being produced, their wallets are painting a different picture.
Leading the charge, unsurprisingly, is Inside Out 2. The critically lauded sequel has not only captured hearts but also dominated box office receipts, translating directly into colossal profits and cementing its place as the year's most lucrative release.
Disney's animated dominance continues with Moana 2 securing the coveted second spot. In a fascinating turn of events, this highly profitable sequel was initially conceived as a Disney+ television series. Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024 that we’re about to disclose, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as...

After a dubious start to the year, with films such as Mickey 17 and The Alto Knightsunder-performing, Warner Bros. bounced back a couple of weeks ago with A Minecraft Movie. The video game adaptation broke opening weekend records, and recently passed the half-billion mark at the global box office. The big question now is if A Minecraft Movie has enough gas in its tanks to pass the $1 billion mark globally. If it does, it’ll become the second film of stars Jason Momoa and Jack Blackcareers to hit this coveted milestone, after the first Aquamanmovie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, respectively.
Both actors have experience with franchises; Momoa has appeared in the DC Extended Universe, while Black has headlined four Kung Fu Panda films and been a part of two Jumanji blockbusters. A Minecraft Movie is already among his highest-grossing hits, having passed King Kong's $556 million global haul from two decades ago.

Hollywood Box Office: Top 10 Films After Q1 ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
The first quarter of the year has ended, and we entered the second quarter this April, which started with a bang with A Minecraft Movie. The Hollywood box office has been slower this year, and this has happened even with big-budget films like Snow White and Captain America: Brave New World. As we enter Q2, let’s rank the top 10 highest-grossing Hollywood movies of the year so far at the worldwide box office. Despite being a box office failure, Snow White is also among the top 10, and there are a lot of other films to release this year, and the ranking will change as well. Keep scrolling for more.
Based on research, the first quarter or Q1 is mostly slower in comparison to the other quarters of the year. It is lagging behind major film releases following the December holiday rush.

Refresh for latest…: The Chicken Jockey has galloped past the half-century mark at the global box office, with A Minecraft Movie at an estimated $550.6M worldwide through today. Of that, $269.6M is from overseas.
During the sophomore session, the Warner Bros/Legendary hit added $79.6M from 76 international box office markets for a -42% hold excluding China. Viola Davis is known for critically acclaimed projects, but she decided to switch things up and go for a more popular type of project. She ended up headlining the Prime Video action film G20, which was not a huge hit with the critics.
In the action film, Viola Davis plays the U.S. President, but even with her dedication and talent, the movie was plagued with negative reviews. G20 debuted with an abysmal score from the critics, but it had hope for a better audience score. Following its release on the platform on Apr. 11, G20 saw an unprecedented rise in the critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it maintained its "rotten" badge while failing to impress the audience.
G20 debuted with a 33% rating from the critics on the review-aggregator website, but as more reviews came in, the score started improving. The film now has 53% from the critics, an astonishing 20-point upgrade.

It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Recently, it has happened with Kung Fu Panda 4,...

Warner Bros. released "A Minecraft Movie" this past weekend, and to say that it is a hit would be a dramatic understatement. Director Jared Hess' take on the wildly popular "Minecraft" video game absolutely demolished pre-release box office projections to post the biggest theatrical opening of 2025 thus far, breaking records and shocking the industry in a positive way. We've got a major blockbuster on our hands and it couldn't have come soon enough.
"A Minecraft Movie" opened to an estimated $163 million domestically to go with $150.7 million overseas for a whopping $313.7 million global debut. That's now the biggest domestic three-day opening weekend ever for a video game movie, topping 2023's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($146.3 million). "Mario" opened to $377 million globally across a five-day holiday opening. "Minecraft" had a standard three-day opening so it is, more or less,...

Jack Black is red hot right now. Of course, he has always been a must-watch for those in the know, including his music with Tenacious D, but he is probably earning more fans now with the release of the film Minecraft.
Reviews are mixed for the project, but audiences clearly like it. It is expected to earn $260 million globally in its opening weekend.
But if you do not feel like hitting the theaters, and you still want to watch some Jack Black movies, Netflix has several to choose from. They are all worth seeing. Here is what you should see based on quality.
Ranking the Jack Black movies that are currently showing on Netflix5. Kung Fu Panda 4
There is also a Netflix original series called Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, which is pretty good. We don't have that listed here because it is not a film. It is worth a watch,...

Along with China, another 19 markets open today including the UK and Spain. We’ll know better tomorrow how high the Jason Momoa/Jack Black-starrer’s global launch could go, but it’s looking like upwards of $90M international while Anthony has noted that domestic projections are at $80M+.
Europe is expected to build big numbers on the Jared Hess-directed movie as school breaks begin and despite some sunny weather. The Middle East has already seen terrific results, at $4.4M through Thursday including previews...

The comedy reboot of Anaconda has slithered into CinemaCon.
Paul Rudd and Jack Black appeared in a video segment to introduce Sony film chief Tom Rothman at the start of the studio’s presentation at the Las Vegas event Monday. Rudd and Black star in director Tom Gormican’s reimagining of Sony’s 1997 snake-focused horror movie.
“We should probably talk about our movie because let’s face it, this is one big commercial,” Rudd quipped. The pair noted that they were currently in Australia to film the movie. “I wish we were there right now,” Black noted.
“Get ready to meet the real star of the film: the anaconda itself,” Rudd continued, with the two stars then joking that a large snake had gotten loose.
Rothman then hit the stage to the tune of “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot — known for its line about a different kind of anaconda.
