Comedian and Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng has joined the animated series to voice Kahn Souphanousinphone, Hank’s (Mike Judge) Laotian neighbor, in the show’s 14th season. Toby Huss voiced the character during the show’s 13-season run on Fox from 1997-2010.

After Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Kung Fu Panda 4 all ranked within the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024, 2025 has been a rough year so farfor animated films at the box office.

However, Dreamworks' Dog Man, released this past January, was a modest success that earned an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score and made over $145 million at the box office. Elio had hopes of turning the year around for animated film, but despite its 83% Rotten Tomatoes score, it debuted to $20 million, the lowest opening weekend ever for a Pixar movie.

After a disappointing post-pandemic run, Pixar bounced back last year with the record-breaking Inside Out 2. The movie didn’t merely outperform its predecessor, but it ended up becoming the highest-grossing animated movie ever released — a record that has since been broken by the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2. For a while, it seemed like the studio’s problems were over after a particularly dark period that saw layoffs and losses. But its latest film, Elio, has sent it right back to square one. With barely a marketing push, Elio delivered the lowest opening in Pixar history, falling short of even the original Toy Story, which debuted three decades ago.

With $21 million domestically and another $14 million from overseas markets, Elio’s cumulative global box office debut stands at $35 million. Unlike other animation houses, which have drastically cut down costs in recent years, Pixar continues to spend top dollar on its projects.

After a weak start to the year, the box office is benefitting from an unlikely savior — PG films.

As movie theater attendance, at long last, begins to rebound, at least part of the newfound success is being attributed to PG films like the Warner Bros. video game adaptation “A Minecraft Movie” ($951 million), Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake ($858 million) and Universal’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” ($197 million in its opening weekend). Since January, PG films have earned $1.53 billion, accounting for 41% of the year-to-date revenue. It’s the highest percentage of any rating this year, according to Comscore.

That’s notable because it’s usually PG-13 films that generate the biggest bucks. Since 2000, movies rated PG-13 by the MPA have dominated the box office and often command more than 50% of the total marketshare. What animation studios remain in production are all focused on one single thing: franchising. As if the IP craze of live-action wasn't enough, the big animation studios like Disney, Warner Bros., and DreamWorks are singularly focused on growing their IP, churning out sequel after sequel (with the occasional original story here and there as a treat). Of course, this isn't automatically a bad thing. Take DreamWorks, who is arguably the champion of animated trilogies, and who, in 2022 delivered one of the best animated movies of the decade with "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish."

Since then, DreamWorks has delivered lackluster sequels to successful movies, like "Trolls Band Together" and the disappointing "Kung Fu Panda 4.

Nick Jonas, one of the famous siblings of the pop rock boy band The Jonas Brothers, has landed a role in the upcoming Kiss biopic. The artist is currently in negotiations to sign up for the musical project titled Shout It Out Loud, which is being directed by McG and written by Darren Lemke. AMC Entertainment’s first-quarter financial results for 2025 reflect a difficult period for theatrical exhibition, as revenues declined and net losses widened. Despite the numbers, CEO Adam Aron maintained that the performance should not be interpreted as a reflection of waning audience interest in moviegoing, arguing instead that the sluggish box office in the first three months of the year was an isolated event already being corrected by a much stronger second quarter.

The company reported a net loss of $202.1 million for the January through March period, an increase from a $163.5 million loss during the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue fell to $862.5 million, down from $951.4 million in Q1 2024, marking a 9% year-over-year decline. Admissions revenue dropped 11% to $473.5 million, and concessions fell nearly 12% to $283.4 million.

After a dubious start to the year, with films such as Mickey 17 and The Alto Knightsunder-performing, Warner Bros. bounced back a couple of weeks ago with A Minecraft Movie. The video game adaptation broke opening weekend records, and recently passed the half-billion mark at the global box office. The big question now is if A Minecraft Movie has enough gas in its tanks to pass the $1 billion mark globally. In the action film, Viola Davis plays the U.S. President, but even with her dedication and talent, the movie was plagued with negative reviews. G20 debuted with an abysmal score from the critics, but it had hope for a better audience score. Following its release on the platform on Apr. 11, G20 saw an unprecedented rise in the critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it maintained its "rotten" badge while failing to impress the audience.

Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie is digging into a strong start at the international box office, with projections for the overseas and global weekend rising. Through Thursday in 55 offshore markets, the running cume is $18.4M. This does not include Friday’s China opening which was the biggest for a Hollywood film so far this year at an estimated $6.6M (see more detail below).

Along with China, another 19 markets open today including the UK and Spain. We’ll know better tomorrow how high the Jason Momoa/Jack Black-starrer’s global launch could go, but it’s looking like upwards of $90M international while Anthony has noted that domestic projections are at $80M+.

Joel Crawford, the Oscar-nominated director of DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “The Croods: A New Age,” has signed with WME for representation in all areas.

Crawford started off at DreamWorks Animation after graduating from the California Institute of the Arts, serving as a story artist on “Shrek Forever After,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “Bee Movie.” He would later work on “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Rise of the Guardians,” “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “Trolls.” As a story artist, he also contributed to “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.”

He made his directorial debut with the “Trolls Holiday” television special in 2017 and his feature directorial debut with 2020’s “The Croods: A New Age,” which was a box office hit even in the midst of the pandemic and earned him his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature.

The comedy reboot of Anaconda has slithered into CinemaCon.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black appeared in a video segment to introduce Sony film chief Tom Rothman at the start of the studio’s presentation at the Las Vegas event Monday. Rudd and Black star in director Tom Gormican’s reimagining of Sony’s 1997 snake-focused horror movie.

“We should probably talk about our movie because let’s face it, this is one big commercial,” Rudd quipped. The pair noted that they were currently in Australia to film the movie. “I wish we were there right now,” Black noted.

“Get ready to meet the real star of the film: the anaconda itself,” Rudd continued, with the two stars then joking that a large snake had gotten loose.

Rothman then hit the stage to the tune of “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot — known for its line about a different kind of anaconda.
