10 Years After Flopping at the Box Office, Ryan Reynolds’ Forgotten $33M Sci-Fi Bomb Is Back on Streaming
Image
Ryan Reynolds set the world on fire last year with his performance as Wade Wilson in Deadpool & Wolverine, but before he ever suited up as the Merc With a Mouth, he starred in a sci-fi thriller that just got an important streaming update. Reynolds stars alongside Ben Kingsley in Self/less, the 2015 sci-fi film following a man who transfers his consciousness into a younger body, only to realize that the procedure didn’t quite go according to plan. Self/less is not currently streaming anywhere, but Peacock has swooped in to save the day, confirming that the film will begin streaming on the platform tomorrow, July 1. Self/less was maligned by critics and audiences, earning an 18% from the former and a 46% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed only $31 million at the box office against a $26 million budget.

Àlex and David Pastor wrote the script for Self/less, and Tarsem Singh directed the film.

After Flopping in Theaters, Ryan Reynolds' Forgotten Sci-Fi Film With 18% Rt Score Is Heading to a New Streaming Home
Image
Even before he became Deadpool in his own superhero series, Ryan Reynolds had a series of successful projects. However, Self/less was not among them.

The sci-fi film premiered in July 2015, one year before Deadpool, and had a promising premise and cast. However, the film bombed at the box office and was plagued with negative reviews. 10 years later, Self/less has a new opportunity to find a new life on streaming, as it's officially heading to Peacock on July 1.

Self/less followed Damian Hale (Ben Kingsley), a business tycoon and billionaire, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. However, he wasn't ready to give up life, so he managed to transfer his consciousness into a younger body, Ryan Reynolds' Mark Bitwell. After the procedure, Damian takes on a new name, Edward, and starts a new life in New Orleans. However, he gets plagued with disturbing images.

Self/less was originally set for release on Sept.

Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges 15% Rotten Tomatoes Flop Is Shooting to Streaming Success 12 Years Later
Image
Despite everything seemingly being set up in its favor, from a strong central cast to a premise usually guaranteed to succeed, some movies crash and burn in fascinating fashion, with almost every aspect receiving universal criticism. One such film is R.IP.D., Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds' supernatural buddy comedy that lacks humor, depth, and an ounce of original action. Such was the film's terrible reception, it earned a frighteningly low 15% critics score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, made no better by a frankly generous 30% rating from audiences.

At the box office, R.I.P.D. failed to fare any better, becoming one of 2013's biggest and highest-profile flops. On a reported production budget of $130 million, R.I.P.D. returned just $79 million globally, split between $33.6 million from nationwide theaters and $45.4 million in overseas markets. Even a further $16 million in domestic video sales couldn't save R.I.P.D. from its doomed woes, with the big-budget flick failing...

A Sci-Fi Flop Is Ryan Reynolds' Worst Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
For many years, Hollywood didn't really know what to do with Ryan Reynolds. He was tried as a romantic lead, but few of his romance films were enormous hits. He also stumbled as an intense horror icon; the remake of "The Amityville Horror" didn't do him any favors. Reynolds was celebrated as a comedic lead in films like "Waiting..." and "Van Wilder," but he could only play an immature buffoon for so long. Many know of his missteps as an action star, as films like "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Green Lantern" have been wildly lambasted by fans and even Reynolds himself. It wouldn't be until performances in films like "The Voices," "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and of course, "Deadpool" that the destined-for-stardom star would finally become a force to be reckoned with. His 2024 film "Deadpool & Wolverine" (which he also produced and co-wrote) made over $1.3 billion.

In 2013, three years before "Deadpool,...

Cult 2006 Film ‘The Fall’, Starring Lee Pace, Getting Global 4K Re-Release Via Mubi
Image
Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is set to re-release Tarsem’s cult 2006 film The Fall in a newly restored 4K version from 27 September 2024 in the US, Canada, Latin America, the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Benelux, Turkey and India. The Match Factory is handling sales for the rest of the world.

The 4K restoration will have its world premiere at this year’s Locarno Film Festival where it will play on the Piazza Grande. Mubi will subsequently stream it on its service.

Set in Los Angeles, circa 1920s, the visually striking movie charts the story of an immigrant girl in a hospital recovering from a fall who strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man. He captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination.

Filmed over four years in 20 different locations across the globe, the movie starred Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru and Justine Waddell. The film was originally presented by David Fincher and Spike Jonze, with a script from Dan Gilroy and Nico Soultanakis.

Reviews were mixed for the film and it failed to ignite at the box office, but its visuals were highly praised and Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, calling it a singular work: “You might want to see [it] for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it,” he said.

After debuting at Toronto back in 2006, the film became very hard to track down on streaming services and director Tarsem recently expressed hope the feature would soon get a revival.

Tarsem Singh, known as Tarsem, is also known for movies such as The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez, The Immortals starring Henry Cavill, Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts and Self/less with Ryan Reynolds. The filmmaker is also well known for his music videos, including Rem’s Losing My Religion, which won MTV’s Best Video Award. In 2023, he directed his first feature film in Punjabi, Dear Jassi which won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Let’s Have A Ryan Reynolds Film Festival
Image
What defines a Ryan Reynolds performance? Is it his wry comedic timing? The almost illegal amount of charisma he projects on screen? The three-piece suits? More than likely, it’s a combination of all of the above, a potent witch’s brew of Hollywood fairy dust that makes this Canadian actor and producer one of our most compelling movie stars. Whether he’s gushing about the genius of Betty White in a documentary tribute to her life, trading bodies with Ben Kingsley in Self/Less or leading a pack of neon-clad vigilantes in 6 Underground, what defines his brand of star power is that you want to see how he tackles every role.

Red Notice is no exception. As international art thief Nolan Booth, Reynolds is at it again, this time alongside Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot, arguably the only other two actors on the planet who are as compulsively watchable as he is.

Tarsem Singh opens up about 'Dear Jassi', his first film to be shot in India
Image
Director Tarsem Singh has spilled beans on ‘Dear Jassi’; which is his first film to be shot in India. According to him, the film takes certain threads of inspiration from his own late mother, where he wondered why a Canadian woman of Indian heritage would plot to have her daughter abducted then murdered. ‘Dear Jassi’, ahead of its global release, was first premiered at the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), and it is touted to be a romance story, but also features grisly murder and violence.

Speaking to Deadline, Tarsem Singh said: “It is a love story, but with a grisly murder at its centre.”

‘Dear Jassi’ is inspired by the real-life honour killing of the Indo-Canadian beautician Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu in June 2000.

The incident saw thugs ambushing the Sikh couple of Jaswinder and her husband Sidhu, who dragged the young bride to a desolate farm in a Punjabi village and slit her throat,...

The Romeo Santos Citi Field Show Was Significant for Latine New Yorkers
Image
Whenever Bachata king Romeo Santos steps foot in a NYC stadium, the turnout is no joke. He has sold out shows at both Yankee Stadium and Met Life Stadium, and his performance on Friday, June 9, at Citi Field was no different. The sold-out, three-hour performance, which is part of the Grammy-nominated singer's "Fórmula, Vol. 3" tour, was accompanied by a packed crowd of 40,000 fans. Based on the countless Latin American flags that waved that night, it's fair to assume that a large majority of the audience were Latines. Dominican DJ Mad opened the show, playing everything from merengue to reggaeton and even Central American cumbia; in other words, he made sure to please the diverse Latine communities that showed up. Santos, who is a native New Yorker himself, remains significant for Latines from New York, particularly those who grew up listening to him back in his Aventura days. There was a...

Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in Creed : L'Héritage de Rocky Balboa (2015)
What’s New on Amazon Prime Video in June 2023
Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in Creed : L'Héritage de Rocky Balboa (2015)
If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”

TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. Even though “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” doesn’t release in theaters until November, all four “Hunger Games” films land on Prime Video this June. Perfect timing — maybe even with a reread...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: June 2023
Image
With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.

It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.

The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

Every Ryan Reynolds Movie Ranked From Worst to Best
Image
One of the most popular movie stars working in Hollywood, Ryan Reynolds movies contain some of the best box-office and streaming successes of the past decade. Reynolds' status as a superstar has been hard-fought since he began working in the 1990s. His eventual success is a testament to the fact that no matter how big someone seems to get "overnight," it's likely it took years to reach that peak. After an early career in television — including a leading role on the amusingly titled Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place -

Reynolds made his breakout debut in the 2002 National Lampoon movie Van Wilder, putting him on the map as a disarmingly handsome star with impeccable comedic timing. Ryan Reynolds' movies tend to vary, and the actor has an impressive catalog. Much of his career saw Reynolds genre-hopping from rom-coms to action flicks to more serious drama (sometimes within the...

Hulu New Releases: March 2023
Image
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Everything Coming to Hulu in March 2023
Image
It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.

If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Jennifer Lopez in The Cell (2000)
“The Cell” director Tarsem Singh is making his global comeback with his first Indian film, “Dear Jassi,” based on a true story with plot details being kept under wraps.

“It’s my passion project,” Singh said of “Dear Jassi.” “I believe this is the right time for the world to see it. Such a strong story needs to be told.”

Singh said the synergy behind the film’s production made it possible.

The 14 Best Ben Kingsley Movies, Ranked
Image
Sir Ben Kingsley is one of the most acclaimed actors of his time. He's received countless accolades throughout his career and has graced both the silver screen and the stage with a wide variety of roles. It's pretty amazing how eclectic his selection of parts is. Here's someone who can play both the titular role in "Gandhi" and pop up as the silly bad guy in the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy "The Dictator."

Kingsley's most famous roles in films like "Bugsy," "House of Sand and Fog," and "Death and the Maiden" are often cited among his best, but his career is more complex than simply a list of accolades. While his early work distinguished him as someone who would leave behind a grand legacy, Kingsley is still a working actor that continues to pop up in new projects. Between his recurring role as Trevor Slattery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

This Nicolas Cage Movie Had A Huge Impact On Directors Justin Benson And Aaron Moorhead
Justin Benson
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead may be most recently known for directing episodes of the "Moon Knight" television series on Disney+, but the filmmaking duo started off in the indie world. Their pre-Marvel outings are notable for their genre-bending elements, films that use a sci-fi horror premise to focus on human relationships and drama. Despite their very specific filmography, however, the two cite "Adaptation," the Spike Jonze-directed meta-narrative starring Nicolas Cage in dual roles as the actual screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and his fictional brother, as one of their biggest influences.

Kaufman, also known for penning "Being John Malkovich" and "Eternal...

What Does the Future Hold for Sailor Moon?

Sailor Moon Eternal, a duology of feature length animated films adapting the manga’s Dream arc, premiered in Japan back in January 2021 and dropped on Netflix the following June. This duology was highly anticipated since Sailor Moon Crystal was effectively cancelled after its well-received third season, and while some were concerned it might lack the runtime to adapt the arc authentically, the response was overwhelmingly positive. The only question that remained was when the final arc of the manga, Stars, would get the same treatment. Now, nearly a year later, we have our answer.

Set for a Summer 2023 release, a new duology of films titled Sailor Moon Cosmos will finish what Sailor Moon Crystal began, a faithful—at times perhaps too faithful—adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi’s iconic manga. This final arc will bring in fan favorite characters (and fetish ball inspirations) the Sailor Starlights, the polarizing Chibi Chibi, the ultimate villain,...

Downton Abbey: A New Era movie review: should we improve society somewhat, or nah?
Image
Ooo, so what’s this “new era” coming for the denizens of Downton Abbey, 1920s-Yorkshire’s nicest feudal hangover? I never truly thought it would be the guillotines my reading of the prequel had inspired in my imagination, though a girl’s gotta dream. But it would not be anachronistic to hope for the Great Depression hitting the Earl of Grantham’s interests hard. Or perhaps soak-the-rich taxation has finally come for Downton, forcing them to open the house to *gasp* paying visitors?

Alas, that last is the closest to comeuppance that will descend upon the sprawling Crawley family and their impossibly happy-with-their-station servants. In the mildest sort of meta one could hope for from this franchise, the moving pictures have come to Downton Abbey! Film director Jack Barber and stars Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish are making a glamorous romantic drama and they need a grand house for the shoot.

New US Trailer for British Golf Comedy 'The Phantom of the Open'
Rhys Ifans, Mark Rylance, and Sally Hawkins in L'as du golf (2021)
"I just need to practice... Practice is the road to perfection." Sony Pictures Classics has revealed an official US trailer for The Phantom of the Open, a true story sports comedy directed by British actor / filmmaker Craig Roberts (also of Just Jim and Eternal Beauty previously). Opening in theaters starting this June in the US. The film tells a true story golfer Maurice Flitcroft, whose performance at the 1976 British Open Golf Championship made him a legend. He was a simple crane operator who managed to gain entry to the 1976 British Open, despite never playing a round of golf before. Mark Rylance stars as Maurice, joined by Sally Hawkins as his wife Jean, and Rhys Ifans as his nemesis Mackenzie; plus a cast including Mark Lewis Jones, Johann Myers, Jake Davies, and Barry Aird. This earned some rave reviews out of the 2021 London Film Festival where it premiered last year. It...

It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season, which means different things to different people. For some, it’s the opportunity to spend time with loved ones; for others, a chance to finally dig out Phil Spector’s Christmas album and stick it on repeat for the next month. The end of the year also means that it’s time to look back at the best releases of the past 12 months, which is where I come in. Below are nine of the best comic books to hit shelves in 2021, running the gamut from superhero movie source material to the memoir of one of America’s most beloved political figures of the past few decades.

"Eternals" - 'The Celestial'
Marvel Studios' new live-action "Eternals" movie, based on the Marvel Comics title is directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, starring Angelina Jolie, opening only in theaters November 5, 2021:

"...for millions of years, one hundred 'Eternals' have roamed the Earth, as the secret protectors of humanity.

"Without them, we'd be smears between the teeth of the demon-like 'Deviants'.

"Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares. But today, Eternals face something new: change. Can they — or anyone — survive their discovery?..."

"'Eternal' doesn’t mean immortal. 'Eternal' means unchanging. That's a different thing. There can be something comforting about the Eternals, but there's also something fundamentally disturbing to it.

"The old superhero cliché of 'The Never-ending battle against crime' is one of those lines which, if you take it out of context for a second and think about it, seems absolutely 'Sisyphean' in its hopelessness.

Disney Only Has Three Weeks to Decide If Marvel's Eternals Gets Delayed Yet Again
Image
It appears that Disney reportedly only has three weeks left to make a decision on whether the upcoming Marvel film Eternals will remain as a theatrical exclusive, or if it will instead receive a hybrid release. Just recently the new report that came from Yahoo, has revealed that Disney still has not made a final decision. Disney and Marvel Studios are reportedly considering the same hybrid release as Black Widow back in July. Apparently, this decision could finally be made depending on the box office performance for Shang-Chi. The recently released film, Shang-Chi, is currently tracking to break box office records over this coming Labor Day weekend.

Disney of course may also have its own reasons on why they are considering releasing Marvel's Eternals on Disney+. One of these reasons are due to the rising cases of the Delta variant that is currently continuing to spread around the United States.

Netflix has been quietly expanding their anime offerings for awhile now but June is a particularly anime-heavy month. The absolutely metal sounding Record of Ragnarok arrives this month. So too do parts 1 and 2 of the newest Sailor Moon film on June 3 and Godzilla Singular Point on June 24.
