We may still be in the middle of the summer, and most shows are just getting back into production (or will be soon), but networks are already looking ahead to the 2024-2025 season. And that means unveiling premiere dates for their fall 2024 shows. Those premieres usually air across September, October, and November, and this year is shaping up to follow that pattern. NBC kicked off the announcements, with premiere dates starting on September 23 (returning The Voice and new drama Brilliant Minds), going through October, and running until November 19 (Night Court). All the usual favorites—such as all three One Chicagos and two Law & Orders—are on the schedule. It also includes new comedies Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical, which will be premiering with back-to-back episodes. A familiar face is joining the cast of Night Court Season 3. Wendie Malick, who recurred in the first two seasons, has been upgraded to a series regular for the upcoming third season of the NBC sitcom, which is set to premiere on NBC on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 p.m. Et/Pt.

Per Deadline, Malick will be reprising her role from the first two seasons as Julianne Walters, the new prosecutor for the night shift at the Manhattan Criminal Court. She is described as "a reformed convict" who is "a sophisticated, savvy woman and accomplished attorney who also knows how to make a shank out of a spoon." She is also the former love interest of Dan Fielding (John Larroquette). Malick's casting comes after it was revealed back in May 2024 that India de Beaufort had departed the series after two seasons and would not be returning as assistant district attorney/prosecutor Olivia Moore.

The fall season is coming, and NBC has announced its premiere dates. Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago Pd, Dateline NBC, Found, The Irrational, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Voice will all return in September and October.

Since the beginning of Storage Wars, viewers have seen various unique items discovered on the show, some of which have been quite strange. Pic follows Sam (Page), who has a chance encounter with an old friend (Baack) on his way home to a dreaded family reunion that forces him to confront long-buried memories.

NBC has made decisions on two of its three bubble comedies and one of its four pilots.

The network has opted to cancel sophomore series Grand Crew and third-year show Young Rock, leaving fellow comedy American Auto on the bubble. As part of NBC’s comedy moves Friday, the network has handed out a series order to the mockumentary series St. Denis Medical. From the moment an animated “Ted” opened the NBCUniversal upfront, voiced by Seth MacFarlane prior to the writers strike, it was clear this was going to be an abbreviated event. For starters, until a week ago, this was still going to be Linda Yaccarino’s Radio City Music Hall show. But with Yaccarino off running Twitter (“Ted” making a crack about the crazies now at Twitter earned the biggest inadvertent laugh of the morning), it was up to Mark Marshall, NBCU interim chairman, global advertising & partnerships, to make the pitch to advertisers.

“In all of our conversations leading up today, regardless of client or category, there has been one constant…this is going to be a very important year for your businesses,” Marshall said, counting 32 pharma launches, 60 auto releases (including 46 electric vehicles) and over 100 movie releases (“which puts us back to pre-pandemic levels”) this year. “We know this is a competitive year.

NBC is the second broadcast to announce its plans for the fall, and unlike CBS, some significant changes are on the horizon.

Quantum Leap is vacating its Mondays at 10 p.m. slot and will move one night later to Tuesdays.

Replacing the reboot is The Irrational, a new drama series.

Night Court will remain on Tuesdays but will lead into Extended Family.

Wednesdays remain unchanged, with the One Chicago franchise remaining intact into next season -- assuming the writers strike doesn't continue for more than a few months.

Law & Order: Organized Crime is being held for midseason, and the new drama series Found will get the Svu lead out.

The series is very compatible with Svu.

We got to watch two episodes, and we'll share more details on that one nearer to the premiere.

If the strike is not hashed out in the coming months, NBC does have options.

Freshman drama “Quantum Leap” is taking a quantum leap to Tuesdays, as NBC unveiled a mostly strike-proof fall schedule that features three new series (two dramas and a comedy) and a crowded midseason bench.

NBC has finally released its schedule for the 2023 to 2024 TV season, and this time around new series from Jon Cryer and Tom Hanks are leading the charge alongside network staples. NBC’s fall schedule will include three new scripted series as well as a new night of Big Ten Football.

“Lopez vs. Lopez” and “Law and Order: Organized Crime” will also officially be returning, though they’re not set to premiere until midseason. According to Jeff Bader, President of Entertainment Program Planning Strategy for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, “Organized Crime” is currently undergoing a showrunner change and does not currently have a showrunner. “It actually is best for the show to have some time to regroup, and it’ll come on as part of the Thursday lineup later in the season,” Bader told TheWrap.

As for “American Auto,” “Grand Crew” and “Young Rock,” NBC has yet to make a decision...

NBC is opening up a new fall comedy block on Tuesday nights and has pushed a couple of its drama series to midseason.

The network unveiled its fall schedule, which sees Jon Cryer’s Extended Family run after Night Court, Quantum Leap moves to Tuesday night, while Found replaces Law & Order: Organized Crime on Dick Wolf’s second night in the fall and La Brea, with its short order season, also pushed to midseason.

There are plenty of strike contingencies built into the schedule, in part as a result of NBC renewing shows early and keeping them in production ahead of the writers walking out.

NBC will add three new scripted series to its primetime lineup for the start of the 2023-24 season — and since all three began production well before the writers strike, they’ll be ready to go right away even if writers (or other industry unions) are still on strike.

The network has done a significant amount of strike-proofing for its fall slate, such that six of seven nights will feature original programming even if the Writers Guild of America strike delays the usual summertime start of production on returning shows. NBC’s new series — dramas Found and The Irrational and comedy Extended Family — were all picked up outside the traditional development cycle and thus filmed several episodes each before writers struck on May 1. NBC revealed its fall 2023-24 TV schedule on Friday ahead of its Monday upfront event. The broadcast channel’s lineup was in no way impacted by the WGA strike, NBCUniversal’s president of program planning Jeff Bader told IndieWire.

Bader said what he put out today is “the exact same schedule” that NBC would have unveiled if the WGA and AMPTP came to terms earlier this month. “The schedule was actually done before we knew whether or not the strike was going to happen,” he said during a telephone interview.

It helps that the schedule is, in Bader’s words, “very stable” with last year’s lineup. That will be NBC’s main talking point Monday when the network pushes its programming on advertisers and tries to ignore the Linda Yaccarino- and Jeff Shell-sized elephants in their Radio City Music Hall room.

The autopsy of Cash App founder and murder victim Bob Lee, 43, has been released. Documents made public on Thursday showed that Lee was stabbed three times, twice in the chest and once in the hip. One strike at his left chest penetrated his heart, with a wound of approximately five inches. Lee died last month in Rincon Hill, San Francisco.

The medical examiner of the case also found alcohol, cocaine, ketamine and allergy medication in Lee’s system.

Shortly after Lee’s murder, social media wags had speculated that the murderer was a homeless resident of the city, as San Francisco has seen a spike in crime recently.

Now, police have charged fellow tech executive Nima Momeni for Lee’s death.

The two men were spotted leaving Lee’s hotel and getting into a Momeni’s car at about 2 a.m., the day of the murder.

The American Black Film Festival has unveiled its lineup of spotlight screenings and new world premieres.

The festival, set to run in Miami Beach from June 14 to 18, has booked a first look for HBO Documentary Film’s Donyale Luna: Supermodel, a film about the pioneering Black supermodel Donyale Luna. Also headed to ABFF for a screening is NBC’s Found drama, created by Nkechi Okoro Carroll and starring Shanola Hampton and Mark-Paul Gosselaar, and BET+’s Average Joe, a darkly comedic drama series that stars Deon Cole and will also have a world premiere.

And there’s screenings booked into Miami Beach for Liongate’s The Blackening, directed by Tim Story, starring Grace Byers and Jermaine Fowler and which had at a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival; and a centerpiece screening for Netflix’s The Perfect Find, directed by ABFF alum Numa Perrier and starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers.

Fans of NBC's six Dick Wolf shows let out a sigh of relief Monday when it was announced that they would all be back for the 2023-24 TV season.

Skeletal remains found at Lake Mead last fall have been identified as belonging to a Las Vegas man named Donald P. Smith, 39, who drowned in the 70s.

Smith’s death was ruled accidental. He was identified through a combination of DNA analysis and reports from 1974.

His remains were discovered after a diver found a human bone in Callville Bay in October 2022. This prompted a search that uncovered more skeletal remains.

Smith is at least the sixth finding of human remains at the lake in the past year. This is due to a prolonged drought that has forced Lake Mead’s water levels to plummet to record lows and its shorelines to recede.

Other human remains include a body that was found in a metal barrel, leading to speculation that the person may have been involved in organized crime.

The guild has a wide-ranging set of priorities for the negotiations, ranging from higher minimum pay and expanded span protection for writers who are bound to a shorter-run TV series for long periods, to “addressing the abuses of mini-rooms” and regulating the use of material produced using artificial intelligence programs.

The WGA’s contract is up May 1, and unless a deal is reached, writers could walk out soon after. Even before the two sides started negotiating, however, TV networks and streamers began taking steps to ensure the content pipeline won’t run dry — at least for a while — in the event of a strike. Here are some of the ways they’re preparing for a potential strike.

NBC has picked up drama pilot The Irrational, starring Jesse L. Martin, to series.

The Irrational, from Arika Lisanne Mittman, was ordered to pilot in February and signs were looking good for a series order. As Deadline previously reported, a mini writers room was set up in the fall to produce a couple of backup scripts, and cast options, which had been set to expire in October, were extended through the end of this month.

Written by Mittman, The Irrational is based on Dan Ariely’s bestselling novel Predictably Irrational. The show follows Alec Baker (Martin), a world-renowned professor of behavioral science who lends his expertise to an array of high-stakes cases involving governments, law enforcement and corporations with his unique and unexpected approach to understanding human behavior.

Maahra Hill, Travina Springer, Molly Kunz and Arash DeMaxi also star.

Martin also is producing the pilot.

The One Piece manga has been on a roll lately with fans overjoyed to finally be introduced to Dr. Vegapunk. What's more, is that they are also finally getting glimpses into Dragon's character as the final saga is still being set up.

One Piece has had a long run, but its time is nearly at an end. The manga likely only has about five more years left, maybe even fewer. In the long run of this series, One Piece has had quite a few plot holes, but that's only to be expected for a series of such length.

Drama The Irrational starring Jesse L. Martin is putting together a mini-room to produce a couple of backup scripts ordered by the network, I have learned. It is a good sign for the project as I hear the pilot was well received internally, with Martin, a bona fide NBC star from his Law & Order days, getting high marks. I hear the option on the cast are up in late October, so a pickup decision is expected by then.

The Untitled Mike Daniels drama, aka Adam and Eva, is on less solid footing. I hear there has been an effort to rethink the romantic comedy as a modestly budgeted series for summer. While the show’s prospects were not looking good recently, I hear an effort to figure out financials is ongoing, with final decision expected by end of the month.

Exclusive: Sonay Hoffman has joined NBC’s newly picked up drama series Found as executive producer and co-showrunner. She will work alongside series creator/executive producer/showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll on the series, from Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television.

Given her workload of three on-air series, Carroll was expected to bring in a co-showrunner on Found the way she recently did on All American: Homecoming with Marqui Jackson. Comedian, writer and actor Larry Wilmore has been tapped to host the 46th Annual Humanitas Prizes, which return as an in-person event on September 9, 2022 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Wilmore is a previous Humanitas winner, having served as creator, writer and exec producer of “The Bernie Mac Show,” which won two of the prizes (along with an Emmy and a Peabody over five seasons). Next up he’s the exec producer, along with Kerry Washington, of the legal drama “Reasonable Doubt,” which comes from Onyx Collective and will air on Hulu this fall.

The NBC drama pilot “Found” has cast Kelli Williams, Variety has learned exclusively.

Williams joins previously announced series lead Shanola Hampton in the project along with fellow cast member Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

The show is built around the fact that, in any given year, more than 600,000 people are reported missing in the U.S. More than half that number are people of color that the country seems to forget about. Public relations specialist Gabi Mosley (Hampton) — who was once herself one of those forgotten ones — and her crisis management team now make sure there is always someone looking out for the forgotten missing people. But unbeknownst to anyone, this everyday hero is hiding a chilling secret of her own.

Williams will star in the pilot as Margaret Reed. A keen observer of human behavior, Margaret is a crisis manager at Mosley and Associates, and the mother figure to her whole team of associates.

NBC revealed its fall 2022-2023 lineup Monday, which includes “La Brea” occupying the current Tuesdays at 9 p.m. home of “This Is Us,” as well as the “Quantum Leap” reboot series taking the coveted post-“The Voice” launchpad. On a season that includes new coach Camila Cabello, that’s an even nicer slot to occupy as the broadcast network’s splashy new drama.

Mondays in the fall will begin with the two-hour episode of “The Voice” at 8 p.m., followed by “Quantum Leap” as its lead-out at 10.

On Tuesdays, “The Voice” will kickoff the night with its one-hour edition at 8 p.m., leading into “La Brea” at 9. Exclusive: DeMane Davis, who has directed episodes of Queen Sugar and Netflix’s Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam Cj Walker, has been tapped to helm NBC pilot Found.

Davis will direct the pilot episode of the missing-persons drama, which comes from Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.

It reunites the director with Berlanti, with whom she worked on episodes of Netflix’s You and The Red Line.

It comes after Davis recently signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group and extends a relationship that began in 2017 when Ava DuVernay gave Davis her television series directing debut on an episode of the Array Filmworks drama series Queen Sugar.

She then became a producing director of the show in season three and supervised the all-female directing team on the show, a DuVernay-created initiative that continues throughout the show’s upcoming sixth season.
