10 Reasons The Great British Bake Off Is A Slice Of British Brilliance
BBC

The Great British Bake Off is probably the most British show there’s ever been. Each season 12 bakers enter a giant bunting-clad tent in the middle of the countryside, and each week they bake through a series of ‘signature’, ‘technical’ and ‘showstopper’ challenges, with the best amateur baker ultimately crowned at a thoroughly British garden party.

Season 6 of the show has ended, leaving the British public emotionally drained. The finale attracting a record audience of more than 13 million, making it the most watched TV show of the year. The show has been a somewhat unexpected success, first appearing on BBC2 before graduating to BBC1 in 2014.

There’s now also a spin-off show Extra Slice which gives viewers a baking fix on Fridays, special celebrity Bake Offs have been produced for charities such as Comic Relief or Sport Relief, and children are invited to compete in the Junior Bake Off aired on Cbbc.

Junior Bake Off will be hosted by Sam and Mark, new judges also announced
Sam and Mark will be presenting this year's Junior Bake Off.

The duo, full names Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes, are joined on the Cbbc show by new judges and renowned chefs Allegra McEvedy and Graham Hornigold.

Mary Berry, who served as judge in 2011 and 2013, will not be returning.

Junior Bake Off will see 40 of the country's best young bakers aged 9 to 12 compete across 10 heats, hoping to qualify for the quarter-finals and beyond. In each heat, the bakers must face two challenges - the Technical Bake and the Showstopper.

"Getting the next generation excited about being in the kitchen has always been a driver of mine, and to be able to put that into action against the backdrop of the Bake Off phenomenon really is a dream come true," said McEvedy.

Hornigold added: "I am honoured to be joining Junior Bake Off as a judge alongside Allegra.

"Together, I hope we can encourage,...

Mary Berry reportedly quits Junior Bake Off over heavy workload
Mary Berry has reportedly quit Junior Bake Off due to concerns over her heavy workload.

The TV presenter appeared as a judge on the first two series of the Great British Bake Off spinoff, in 2011 and 2013.

But Berry believes that adding Junior Bake Off to her schedule this year would be too difficult to manage, according to The Sun.

Paul Hollywood no longer judges the kids' version, having quit after the 2011 series. He was replaced by James Martin.

Junior Bake Off, which currently airs every two years, will return in November.

BBC One recently announced that the sixth series of Great British Bake Off will premiere on August 5.
