The New York Times is determined to find the Top 100 Films of the 21st Century as voted by the public. It’s open on their website (with a paywall), but even famous actors and filmmakers in the movie business are getting in on the action. According to the Borrowing Tape page on Facebook, “The poll includes ‘more than 500 influential directors, actors and other notable names in Hollywood and around the world voted on the best films released since Jan. 1, 2000.'” They have shared the lists that were compiled by Bong Joon Ho, Sofia Coppola, Julianne Moore, Mel Brooks, Mikey Madison, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ava DuVernay.
Bong Joon Ho, whose Mickey 17 was released earlier this year, submitted his picks for the Top 9 Films of the 21st Century. His list includes films like Asako, No Country for Old Men, Lazzaro Felice, Mad Max: Fury Road, Stranger by the Lake, The Day He Arrives,...

Are the guys Ok? So rarely do we get smart, subversive screen comedies about male friendship these days, and writer/director Andrew DeYoung’s feature directing debut “Friendship” turns the genre inside out.
Casting Paul Rudd as forlorn weatherman Austin Carmichael, neighbor to Tim Robinson’s anxiously neurotic Craig Waterman, in his A24 movie will immediately bring to mind another male friendship comedy, “I Love You, Man.” “Friendship” is like the dark mirror of John Hamburg’s 2009 cult classic, as the desperately friendless Craig strikes up (or even forces) a bond with the charismatic man across the street who keeps getting his packages. It proves ruinous for all, including Craig’s wife Tami (played by Kate Mara), who is obsessed with an ex and oh-so eager to get Craig out of the house.

Keira Knightley is a certified movie star, whose films grossed over $3.6 billion at the worldwide box office. However, the actress has stayed away from big blockbusters and focused on several roles where she can balance her personal life and professional life.
Because of this, she has found a new partnership with Netflix that helps her achieve both things. Following a successful run with Black Doves, the two teamed up again for a new project. Netflix has just unveiled the first look at The Woman in Cabin 10 during its Next on Netflix event.

Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down – a dark satire starring Kirsten Dunst, Keanu Reeves and Daniel Brühl – has now started filming.
Here’s a project that has sounded rather enticing, ever since it was first announced in April of last year. Ruben Östlund, the filmmaker behind Force Majeure and Triangle Of Sadness has assembled an exciting cast for what looks to be a story examining the darker impulses of human nature.
A24 is backing The Entertainment System Is Down, and the boutique studio is really backing Östlund in what we’re hoping retains the filmmaker’s arthouse sensibilities while also appealing to a broader audience. As well as footing the bill for an incredible ensemble of acting talent, A24 has also backed the purchase of a retired Boeing 747 for the film, which is presumably sitting on a studio backlot somewhere in Budapest as Östlund uses it to make his movie.

Hailed by Variety as “a superb historical drama about the Far-Right’s threatto democracy, the movie “Quisling: The Final Days” helmed by Norway’s top filmmaker Erik Poppe, impressed audiences at the last Toronto Film Festival where it bowed as a Special Presentation.
At home the story of Norway’s infamous Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling, whose name has become a byword for traitor, stirred intense public debate and ended up as the third biggest Norwegian film of 2024. Now its long-form TV version, developed concurrently to the feature film by co-writers Anna Bach-Wiig and Siv Rajendram Eliassen, has a chance to nab the hefty $17,000 Nordic Series Script Award at Göteborg’s TV Drama Vision series showcase.

Exclusive: Tobias Menzies has joined the ensemble of Ruben Östlund’s next film The Entertainment System is Down. Sources say he replaces Joel Edgerton who had to part ways with the film due to scheduling conflicts. Menzies joins a cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton and Daniel Brühl. A24 is handling domestic distribution.
The film is another social satire from the director that is set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment systems fail, and an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.
The project will be Östlund’s second English-language film and seventh feature after The Guitar Mongoloid (2004), Involuntary (2008), Play (2011), Force Majeure (2014), The Square (2017) and Triangle of Sadness (2022). The last two of these won the director the Palme d’Or in Cannes, meaning he is one of only a handful of filmmakers to have won the accolade twice.

Whenever disaster hits in a movie, we already know what will happen next. We will either have a juicy disaster flick in our hands, packed to the brim with breathtaking action sequences, or we'll get a heavy drama like J.A. Bayona's The Impossible or, well, J.A. Bayona's Society of the Snow. But what if the director staring at imminent catastrophe isn't that keen on action movies and tearjerkers? What if they're more into delivering a message through a very disturbing and uncomfortable sense of humor? Well, that's how you get Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure, a film that makes you wonder if getting hit by an avalanche would really be the worst thing in the world. After all, surviving such a disaster unharmed might turn you into a coward or, perhaps even more disturbing, a coward's wife.

Keanu Reeves has become one of the most celebrated franchise actors working today. He rose to prominence with the 1999 film The Matrix, which went on to become an entire series. His role as Neo remains one of the most celebrated parts of his career to date, as moments from the sci-fi film have become iconic elements in film. Fast forward 15 years and Reeves made a name for himself once again playing the eponymous hit man in the John Wick series. The Chad Stahelski series has become key in Reeves' career, and he will reprise his role in Ballerina.
In addition to his action franchises, Reeves has also spent time working with award-winning directors. This includes a role in Point Break, which was one of the earlier works by Kathryn Bigelow. Bigelow would go on to win an Oscar for her work directing The Hurt Locker, becoming the first woman to win the award.

The 16th edition of the Les Arcs Film Festival’s Industry Village concluded positively, highlighting Norwegian filmmaker Janicke Askevold’s breakthrough feature, “Solomamma.” This film, which depicts the moving story of a single mother reaching out to her sperm donor, received much attention and won the €10,000 22D Music Award for its creative musical composition.

Brady Corbet, director of the upcoming A24 film The Brutalist, is already looking ahead to his next project. Following The Brutalist, centering around an architect (Adrien Brody) fleeing post-war Europe in 1947 and pursuing the American Dream, Corbet will do something completely different. He revealed in a New Yorker profile that his next film, a horror-Western also centering around immigration, will “shake viewers.” According to The New Yorker:
The new project, which is set in the nineteen-seventies and early eighties, will also deal with immigration, this time of the Chinese to California. Its style will be looser; genre-wise, it will draw on horror and Westerns.
Apparently, the seed of the idea came to the director when he hosted a Halloween watch party for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with his partner and collaborator, the filmmaker Mona Fastvold. Their 10-year-old daughter Ada and various friends were also in attendance.

What a difference a year makes. In the weeks after last year’s edition of the Polish Film Festival, the country batted away a far-right insurgency. Where last year’s festival was conspicuous for its inclusion of films that seemed to exist above all else to express nationalistic pride, the 49th edition was a showcase of more liberal sentiments and artistic styles.
Amid a sea of rising fascism in Central and Eastern Europe, Poland’s relative holding down the fort of nominal liberalism has been surprising. It seemed to translate into a sunnier festival this year, which extended to the vibrant festival logo. Last year’s frequent rain and rippling winds were supplanted by weather more befitting the “Cannes of Poland,” as locals affectionately call the Gdynia-based festival. The festive mood was infectious, with staff frequently and excitedly discussing next year’s 50th jubilee, and the promise of a more progressive country.

Remakes get a bad rap, and frankly it’s sometimes deserved. At their worst, remakes can be pointless exercises in flattening an interesting film into something broader and less singular. Whether it’s a shot-for-shot remake like Gus Van Sant’s notorious “Psycho” redux or a misguided switch up like the execrable 2012 “Total Recall,” many remakes offer nothing of value.
These issues are often only magnified when an American director decides to put their own spin on a film that originated from outside the states. From overly sentimental mush like “Coda” or “The Upside” to dismal J-horror remakes like “Apartment 1303 3D” (remember that? No we didn’t either) to Will Ferrell starring in a broad comedic take on “Force Majeure” called “Downhill,” these international remakes often have nothing to offer compared to their originator except for putting the story in English. It brings to mind Bong Joon-ho’s famous...

The Brutalist, Adrien Brody's latest drama venture and a film that's already making heads turn in the industry, has been snatched by independent distributor A24. What could be categorized as Brody's grand return to the Hollywood spotlight has been one of the most talked about films at this year's Venice International Film Festival. A24's decision to acquire the film for domestic distribution came right after director Brady Corbet won the Silver Lion award for Best Director at the prestigious festival. (The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodvar won the most important award this year.)
The Brutalist, directed by Corbet from a script co-written with Mona Fastvold, is a historical drama featuring Brody in the lead as Laszlo Toth, a Holocaust survivor given the chance to start over again in the United States with his wife Erzsbet. After they arrive in America, Toth, a very talented architect, faces...

A monument of independent filmmaking is coming to a cinema near you. Brady Corbet’s 3.5-hour-long, seven-years-in-the-making historical epic The Brutalist finally secured a U.S. distribution deal over the weekend. The movie, which won Corbet the Venice Film Festival’s best director prize Saturday, will be released by indie tastemaker A24 sometime later this year with a major awards season campaign expected to follow.
The buzz around The Brutalist has been building into a roar ever since its first press screening in Italy a little over a week ago. First came the curious talk surrounding the 10-minute intermission that bisects the movie — a commercially challenging choice that nonetheless feels integral to its construction. A24 acquired the U.S. rights to Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down this weekend.
The eight-figure deal gives A24 U.S. distribution rights to what will be the Swedish film director’s second English-language movie, after 2022’s Triangle of Sadness. The latter won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, which marked Östlund’s second time taking home the prize after 2017’s The Square.
Like his last movie, The Entertainment System Is Down is also a social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight in which the entertainment system fails and passengers must figure out how else to fill their time. Östlund and his producer, Erik Hemmendorff, purchased a real Boeing 747 for the film.

“It’s f–ing hard to make a good airplane movie,” Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund emphasized multiple times Saturday morning in Cannes as he spoke to international press about his plans for The Entertainment System Is Down, the latest feature he has set to direct starring a buzzy cast led by Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl.
His follow-up to the Palme d’Or-winning satire Triangle of Sadness, The Entertainment System Is Down is another social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment systems fail, and an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for 2022's Speak No Evil ending!
The 2024 remake of Speak No Evil starring James McAvoy faces a major problem with its updated setting and characters. The original movie's Scandinavian cultural commentary won't translate well to American and British characters in the remake. To fix the issue, the upcoming horror movie needs to focus on making the central friendship between the families more believable.
Although 2024’s Speak No Evil remake looks promising, the James McAvoy project must fix one major problem with its premise. 2022’s Danish psychological horror Speak No Evil became a viral hit thanks to its ruthless twist ending, but this shocking, brutal twist completely changed the tone of the preceding movie. In its opening half, the horror movie plays out like a cringe comedy akin to Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure. It was only in Speak No Evil’s ending that the dark, depraved...

Triangle of Sadness director Ruben Östlund understands the power of cinema and its impact on society, which is why he’s proposing a radical idea to regulate the use of cameras.
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker recently expressed in an interview with The Guardian the importance of consuming high-quality media, especially since people’s relationship with screens — big or small — has become much more prominent today.
“I have an idea,” Östlund said. “What if you were only allowed to use a camera if you have a license? You need one for a gun — at least in sophisticated countries. The camera is also a powerful tool.”
The Square director also advised other filmmakers to treat media with a level of caution and understand the responsibility they hold as films can potentially influence society in ways they weren’t intended to.

Under the subtle veneer of comedy, made all the more preposterous by an all too typical awkward and fumbling Englishman, Edoardo Ulivelli’s Lo Sguardo (The Look) reverberates with pangs of loneliness and regret. Ulivelli’s graduate short, all filmed around the lush verdant Tuscan countryside, is not carried by dialogue but instead longing glances, wordless coquettish smiles and heady flirtations. Lo Sguardo follows a shy young man on his Italian holiday as he navigates a potential lustful encounter. Ulivelli pulls from personal experience as he was drawn to explore those big ‘What if?’ moments through our unversed protagonist’s refusal or perhaps inability to grab the proverbial bull by the horns. As Lo Sguardo premieres on Dn’s pages today, we speak to Ulivelli about writing this film as a way to process his own worries and preoccupations, his meticulous planning before a shoot, and why he wanted to...

Helen wants to please. She is driven by a seemingly fathomless pit of toxic positivity that, on a surface level may seem benign but once the veneer cracks exposes deep-seated hurt and rather unhealthy coping mechanisms. I’m A Good Person, directed by Tamsin Topolski, is a wonderfully dark dive into one woman’s journey to find love and connection as she navigates the cruel world we live in always looking on the bright side of life. Topolski found herself immediately drawn to the acerbic and unconventional script written by Ross O’Donnellan, who stars alongside Laure Stockley and brings the film’s vile male antagonist to punchable life. The world crafted in I’m a Good Person reflects a stark and almost bare existence which highlights the noxiousness of the relationship Helen has tied herself to and evocatively explores what happens when even the meekest of us are pushed to breaking point.

IndieWire reached out to the cinematography nominees for the 75th Emmy Awards (Emmys). Once again, we used the data to build a chart and find tendencies. It seems that Sony takes the lead with the Venice. Also, it’s a nice surprise to explore the Kinefinity Mavo Edge and the Blackmagic Ursa 12K in that prestige list. Furthermore, there’s a solid presence of Red too.

The following contains spoilers for The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart, which is available on digital and Blu-ray now.
In lieu of an eighth season, The Venture Bros. got a movie finale in Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart. Although the movie closed on an open-ended note in a style that was typical of the cult adult cartoon, it did a good job of wrapping up the characters' long-running arcs and finally answering some of its biggest mysteries.
Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart dropped some of the biggest continuity and lore bombshells that The Venture Bros. fandom ever saw. The movie also answered some long-standing questions in the most unexpected ways. While it's sad that this is the end for The Venture Bros., the movie at least closed the show satisfyingly.
