On The Couch: Is This The Real Reason Jack Wants to Cut Off Billy After July 24 Y&r
Image
On the July 24 episode of The Young and the Restless, Jack lamented to Diane that he’s afraid the best thing he can do for Billy now is to stop enabling his stupidity. Which means cutting Billy off completely, no more second, third, fourth, seventeenth chances. Jack thinks he knows why he’s doing this. But we know better. Please join Jack—and us—on the couch, for a very thorough head-shrinking.

Jack Abbott: Golden Boy

There is such a huge age difference between Jack (Peter Bergman) and his brother, Billy (Jason Thompson), that Jack had time to sleep with Billy’s mother, Jill (Jess Walton), years before Billy was born. So the two didn’t grow up together and didn’t have a common childhood experience.

Jack accepted Billy, even though he hated Billy’s mother (this would be after he slept with her… and during) because Jack...

Why Did It Take Me So Long to Watch Robot Carnival?
Image
Welcome, readers, to Late to the Party , a column that's right on time when it comes to catching up on anime everyone's already watched. This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. Occasionally, it’s by watching a classic anime from yesteryear that you’ve had your eye on for quite some time. In other instances, it’s a more recent premiere that just slipped by. This month, I wanted to go back. Way back. Like, way, way back, to watch an anime that premiered almost an...

12 Underrated Anime from the ’90s That You Absolutely Need to Revisit
Image
The 90s were a golden age for anime, packed with bold stories and unique styles, but not every gem got its due. While Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon stole the spotlight, many shows faded into obscurity despite their brilliance.

We’ve ranked 12 overlooked 90s anime, from quirky comedies to epic sagas, that capture the decade’s magic. Here’s why these forgotten series deserve a spot on your watchlist.

12. Kyou Kara Ore Wa!! (1992-1997) Pierrot

Mitsuhashi and Itou, two teens, decide to become delinquents, sparking hilarious fights and rivalries. Its retro art and mix of comedy and heart outshine modern hits like Tokyo Revengers.

The scrappy brawls and vibrant characters scream 90s charm. We love its raw, chaotic energy. Not currently available for streaming.

Walton Goggins, Aaron Moten, and Ella Purnell in Fallout (2024)
Amazon has set 17 September 2025 for the return of Gen V, dropping the first three episodes on Prime Video in more than 240 territories and then rolling out weekly instalments until the finale on 22 October. A teaser posted moments later confirmed the split-launch structure and showed Godolkin University under new dean “Cipher,” portrayed by Hamish Linklater.

Seven principal cast members are back, including Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann and Sean Patrick Thomas, according to official first-look photos shared in March. Collider adds that Patrick Schwarzenegger’s Golden Boy will appear only in flashbacks, while no actor will step into the shoes of Andre Anderson following Chance Perdomo’s death. Charles Strouse Dies: Prolific Composer Of Broadway’s ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ Film’s ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ And TV’s ‘All In The Family’ Theme Was 96
Image
Charles Strouse, the musical composer for such Broadway hits as Bye Bye Birdie, Applause and Annie, films including Bonnie and Clyde (1967) The Night They Raided Minsky’s (1968) and All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989) and for the TV series All In The Family, died at his home in New York City on May 15. He was 96.

His death was announced by his children Benjamin, Nicholas, Victoria, and William Strouse., and was nominated for Golden Boy, Charlie & Algernon, Rags, and Nick & Nora.

Strouse was born on June 7, 1928 in New York City, the son of Ethel (Newman) and Ira Strouse. After graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 1947, he received two scholarships to Tanglewood, where he studied under composer Aaron Copland. Subsequently, Copland arranged for Strouse to get a scholarship with legendary teacher, Nadia Boulanger, in Paris.

Strouse met songwriting partner, lyricist Adams, at a party in 1949, and the duo began a longtime collaboration starting with writing songs for summer resorts in the Adirondacks. Strouse and Adams contributed material to numerous Off-Broadway musical revues, including Catch a Star, Shoestring Revue, The Littlest Revue and Kaleidoscope, and wrote specialty material for Kaye Ballard, Carol Burnett, Jane Morgan and Dick Shawn.

In 1958, Strouse and lyricist, Fred Tobias wrote the chart-topping pop song “Born Too Late” (recorded by The Poni-Tails), and it was in that same year that Strouse and Adams had their Broadway breakthrough. They were hired by producer Edward Padula to write a satirical musical about rock and roll and teen idol culture. The show, Bye Bye Birdie, became their first Tony Award-winning hit. The production starred Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke and won four 1961 Tony Awards including Best Musical, earning Strouse the first of his three Tony Awards.

The show introduced the world to such songs as “Put On A Happy Face,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.” A 1962 movie version, starring Ann-Margret, was one of the top-grossing films of the year, and featured Margret’s now iconic performance of the film’s newly added title song, “Bye Bye Birdie.” Strouse would later win a 1996 Emmy Award for the new song, “Let’s Settle Down,” written with Adams and added for the musical’s 1995 TV adaptation, starring Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams.

Deadline Related Video:

Additional collaborations with Adams include the Mel Brooks musical All American (1962) starring Ray Bolger. Though the show was not a commercial success, it featured what would become the popular American standard “Once Upon a Time”. Golden Boy (1963), a musical adaptation of the play by Clifford Odets starred Sammy Davis Jr., garnered Strouse his second Tony Award nomination. It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane… It’s Superman! gave audiences another popular Strouse & Adams song, “You’ve Got Possibilities” (first recorded by Linda Lavin). And in 1970, when the team wrote the score for Applause (based on the film All About Eve and Mary Orr’s The Wisdom of Eve and starring Lauren Bacall), Strouse would win his second Tony Award.

Strouse’s biggest Broadway success was with collaborators Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan on Annie (1977), based on the comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” by Harold Gray. The Depression-era musical about a plucky red-headed orphan girl who wins the heart of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, was one of Broadway’s biggest hits of the 1970s, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and garnering Strouse his third Tony Award and a Grammy Award for Best Cast Show Album. Strouse’s score included “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard–Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You.” Annie ran for over 2,300 performances on Broadway, where it has been revived twice and has inspired hundreds of worldwide productions. It has also been adapted for two film and two television productions.

Strouse was passionate about collaboration and would earn Tony Award nominations for his scores with lyricists: David Rogers, Charlie & Algernon (1980), based on the novel Flowers for Algernon, Steven Schwartz, for Rags (1986), with book writer Joseph Stein starring Teresa Stratas, and Nick and Nora (1991), a musical based on Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man characters, written with Richard Maltby, Jr.

Strouse’s film scores include Bonnie and Clyde (1967) starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, There Was a Crooked Man (1970), with Henry Fonda and Kirk Douglas, Sidney Lumet’s Just Tell Me What You Want, and the animated feature All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989).

In addition to his awards, Strouse was the recipient of several honorary doctorates. He was a longtime member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, inducted in 1985, and the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Strouse also composed orchestral works, chamber music, piano concertos, and an opera. His original piano work, Concerto America, was composed in 2002 to commemorate 9/11 and premiered at The Boston Pops in 2004. His opera Nightingale (1982), starring Sarah Brightman, had a successful run in London, followed by many subsequent productions.

In 1977, Strouse founded the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop, through which many young composers and lyricists honed their craft and developed their work. Strouse authored the autobiography Put on a Happy Face: A Broadway Memoir, published by Union Square Press in July 2008.

In addition to his four children, Strouse is survived by eight grandchildren, Sam and Arthur Strouse, Navah Strouse, Vivian, Weston and Ever Brush, and Owen and Theodore Strouse.

A private ceremony will be held at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in New York City.

Anime Review: Angel Densetsu (1996) by Yukio Kaizawa
Image
by Danny Lee

“Angel Densetsu”, a two-episode Ova from 1996 directed by Yukio Kaizawa, adapts Norihiro Yagi’s shonen manga. It centers on Seiichirou Kitano, a high school freshman with a heart of gold but a face that could haunt nightmares. Pale skin, sharp teeth, and eerie eyes make everyone, from classmates to delinquents, peg him as a terrifying thug. Set at Hekikuu High, the story follows Kitano’s attempts to be kind, which are hilariously misread as threats, landing him the role of “school guardian.” The Ova adapts the manga’s early chapters, delivering a quick dose of dark comedy.

William Holden movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
William Holden was an Oscar-winning performer who starred in dozens of movies, remaining active until his untimely death in 1981. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let's take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born on April 17, 1918, Holden made his film debut with a starring role in the boxing drama "Golden Boy" (1939) when he was just 21 years old. Though his career lagged for the next decade, he came roaring back with Billy Wilder's Hollywood noir "Sunset Boulevard" (1950), playing a struggling screenwriter who becomes involved with a fading, delusional silent film star (Gloria Swanson). The role brought him his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor.

He joined the winner's circle just three years later with a Best Actor victory for Wilder's "Stalag 17" (1953), which cast him as a cynical American Pow who's suspected of being a German informant during WWII.

Watch Shia Labeouf Spar with Star Toby Kebbell in New Film 'Salvable'
Image
Whatever you think about Shia Labeouf, his intensity and commitment is unquestionable, and he's not afraid to be outspoken. Labeouf's interesting career path was diverted among a variety of scandals and allegations, and you could hardly call it a comeback when he returned in 2023 with the film Padre Pio. Which is a shame, because he gives a great performance, and Abel Ferrara always creates fascinating films. It was perhaps just too niche a movie to give the former Transformers star the spotlight again. That likely won't change with his next movie, Salvable, which recently released its first trailer. You can watch the trailer for the film, also starring Toby Kebbell, below:

The synopsis for Salvable reads as follows:

"Shia Labeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter’s battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his...

‘Moana 2’ Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Back and Who’s New in Disney’s Sequel?
Image
Moana may have taken on the ocean virtually alone in “Moana” — at least, until she dragged Maui along — but that isn’t the case in Disney’s latest sequel.

In “Moana 2,” our wayfinding hero sets out on another voyage. This time, she’s called upon by the ancestors to locate an island hidden by a god, specifically with the intent to cut off other island peoples from each other. The mission is decidedly more dangerous than in the first film, and that means she needs a crew.

Here’s who’s on that crew, and where you might recognize everyone’s voices from in our complete “Moana 2” cast and character guide now that the film is streaming on Disney+.

Disney Moana (Auli’i Cravalho)

Moana remains the center of the story in the sequel, as she sets out to quite literally save humankind. She’s once again voiced by Auli’i Cravalho,...

10 Harem Anime That Actually Respect Female Characters
Image
The harem anime genre is one of the medium’s most heavily disliked and commonly dismissed — and plenty of criticisms aimed at harem anime are far from unfounded. All harem anime follow the basic premise of a group of attractive girls falling for the same male lead, presenting the viewers with a self-indulgent fantasy that rarely pretends to be more than that.

Female characters in harem anime are usually archetypical and regularly exploited for fanservice, unique development and nuanced personalities not being common features of harem plots. However, plenty of harem anime actually recognize the heroines as the beating heart of any harem storyline and treat them with the respect and appreciation they deserve. In these harem anime, female characters are more than just eye candy and, for once, get treated as multifaceted people with traits outside of their attraction to the protagonist.

10 Best Short Anime with Less Than 10 Episodes
Image
Anime comes in a plethora of different genres and formats to suit every fan’s viewing preferences. From long-running epics spanning hundreds of episodes you can spend months sinking your teeth into to self-contained movies for a relaxing evening, anime has something to offer regardless of how one likes to enjoy their media.

The standard for TV anime is a one or two-cour season – a series that runs for three or six months and has 11-13 or 24-26 episodes. Yet ome anime series break these conventions, condensing their stories into less than 10 episodes. While uncommon, some short anime series feature incredible stories that don’t compromise the quality for the sake of padding the runtime. Perfect for binging all at once, these short anime series don’t waste their viewers’ time and tell stellar stories that are concise yet potent.

Image
The Boys kicked off a raunchy superhero universe in 2019 that has become one of Prime Video’s signature properties, and although The Boys is set to conclude with Season 5, the universe will live on through multiple spin-offs. One of those spin-offs is Gen V, which aired its first season in 2023 and was swiftly renewed for Season 2, with the second season wrapping filming last year. One of the stars of Season 1, at least for the first few episodes, is Patrick Schwarzenegger, who plays Golden Boy. Despite his death, fans remained hopeful that Golden Boy would appear in Gen V Season 2, but during a recent interview with ScreenRant, Schwarzenegger shut down all hopes of a return, but wouldn’t rule out a return in a future season:...

When Taika Waititi Responded To Marvel Fans Who Thought He’d Ruin Thor: ‘You Don’t Know What You Want Until I Give It to You’
Image
Taika Waititi Marvel Criticism (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Taika Waititi? The man’s got no time for doubters. When Marvel fans questioned his ability to bring Thor back to life, his response was legendary. “You don’t know what you want until I give it to you,” he shot back at critics who thought he’d tank the franchise. Spoiler alert: he didn’t ruin a thing. Instead, he dropped Thor: Ragnarok, which is still one of the most loved films in Marvel’s lineup.

Back in 2017, the New Zealand filmmaker flipped the Thor script on its head, injecting his unique humor and colorful storytelling into a franchise that was stuck after Thor: The Dark World. Fans weren’t sure what to expect, but Waititi delivered a mic drop moment. Ragnarok still holds a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated Marvel films ever.

De Mave died Jan. 16 in hospice care in Macon, Georgia, his friend Vickie Lovett told The Hollywood Reporter. He had suffered a heart attack on Thanksgiving Day, she said.

The hunky De Mave also appeared in such films as the Rock Hudson-starring Blindfold (1966), 1776 (1972) — as John Penn — and Mel Gibson’s The Man Without a Face (1993), and in the 1970s, he played The Lone Ranger in a series of Frito-Lay commercials that led to appearances in parades and in front of kids as the wholesome lawman.

The stage-trained actor joined the cast of the enduring CBS drama Lassie at the start of its 15th season as Forest Ranger Bob Erickson in 1968 and worked on 23 episodes over two years.

10 Best Supe Fights in Gen V, Ranked
Image
Much like its predecessor, The Boys, Prime's Gen V follows the lives of superpowered individuals; however, rather than focusing on powerful and influential figures like Homelander, Gen V tells the story of the up-and-coming generation of heroes. That said, these young heroes are far from insignificant, and altogether, they possess some of the strongest abilities in The Boys universe, resulting in several memorable Supe fights during the show's first season.

From Marie Moreau's ability to control and manipulate blood to Cate Dunlap's telepathic talents, there is no shortage of memorable powers that appear in Gen V. These powers and the Supes that wield them are extremely dangerous, which is why it's so riveting when these superpowered individuals finally square off with their enemies in a series of battles that rivals any from The Boys.

NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 8 Review: Sick As Our Secrets
Image
One of these days, we will make it through an episode of NCIS: Origins without tearing up. Until that day, keep your Kleenex auto-delivery going.

Holy crap, that was quite the deep dive into parts of Randy previously unknown. Is it me, or does every Nis team member seem to be struggling with one personal issue after another?

NCIS: Origins has a firm grip on emotionally intelligent tough guys. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many gun-toting male characters cry, and I love it.

(Erik Voake/CBS)

In all seriousness, NCIS: Origins is knocking it out of the park in the storytelling department.

While some viewers don’t think the series feels like an NCIS series, everyone agrees it’s still a great show.

Emmys have always loved hosting duos, beginning with Lucy & Desi
Image
Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy continue to make Emmy history. Four years ago, their comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” won a staggering nine Emmys including best comedy series, actor, actress, supporting actors, writing and directing. Even before “Schitt’s Creek,” Eugene was no stranger to the Emmy universe, winning statutes in 1982 and 1983 as a writer on the beloved “Sctv.” In fact, Dan was just a month old when his dad received his second honor.

Eugene’s nominated this year for the 14th time for outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special for Apple TV +’ “The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy.” Now Eugene and Dan will be the first father and son to host the Emmys airing Sept. 15 on ABC. And here’s bit more history: the 77-year-old Eugene is the oldest Emmy host ever.

Having two hosts is nothing new for the Emmys. Back in 1952, the Emmys were hosted by the...

“I wish I got to work with them”: Gen V Star Whose Character Was Brutally Killed Regrets Not Being Able to Work With Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty in The Boys
Image
The Boys spinoff series Gen V was received by the audience with much appreciation. The story and the characters didn’t disappoint, and just like the main story, the spinoff too, became a fan favorite. Antony Starr, who plays Homelander in The Boys also made a cameo in Gen V, much to the amazement of fans. But one actor was sad to have not gotten the chance to work with him and the rest of the cast of the Amazon Prime show.

A still from Gen V | Credits: Amazon Studios

Patrick Schwarzenegger played Golden Boy/ Luke Riordan in Gen V, a supe with pyrokinesis and superhuman strength. Unfortunately, Luke’s character died in the first season of the show. Schwarzenegger did not get the opportunity to work with Starr, who appeared in the last episode of Gen V season 1. And now, seems like the actor is lamenting this missed opportunity.

‘Hacking Hate’ Review: An Alarming Documentary on the Power of Far-Right Social Media Influencers
Image
In case you weren’t aware of the evils of social media, or if you otherwise needed another reason to despise Elon Musk, it’s worth taking a look at Hacking Hate, an eye-opening study of the power that far-right influencers wield both online and in the real world.

Directed by Simon Klose (Tpb Afk: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard) and featuring Swedish investigative reporter My Vingren, the film ushers the viewer down a rabbit hole where muscle-bound YouTubers, racist zealots and DJs-turned-Russian agitators pollute the internet in pursuit of personal and political plunder. It’s an ugly world to enter, and one that the brave Vingren never shies away from, putting herself at risk as she tries to get to the bottom of a long and elusive digital trail.

It all begins when Vingren, whose journalistic exploits and hacking capabilities have earned her the nickname “the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” in Sweden,...

Tony Lo Bianco, Actor in ‘The French Connection’ and ‘The Seven-Ups,’ Dies at 87
Image
Tony Lo Bianco, the Brooklyn actor who oozed criminal charm in the gritty 1970s New York City dramas The French Connection and The Seven-Ups, has died. He was 87.

Lo Bianco died Tuesday night of prostate cancer at his horse farm in Poolesville, Maryland, his wife, Alyse, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Lo Bianco was also memorable as a smooth-talking con man with a lonely nurse (Shirley Stoler) for a girlfriend/accomplice in Leonard Kastle’s documentary-style The Honeymoon Killers (1970), which Francois Truffaut once said was his favorite American film.

In another cult classic, the horror thriller God Told Me To (1976), directed by Larry Cohen, Lo Bianco starred as a New York cop who investigates a series of bizarre murders orchestrated by the leader of a religious group (Richard Lynch).

He received a best actor Tony nomination in 1983 for playing Eddie Carbone in a revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge,...

Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Co-showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters oversee the project, with cast members including Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, Lizze Broadway as Little Cricket, Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap, and both London Thor and Derek Luh as Jordan Li. John Constantine's Greatest Enemy Has Always Been Himself
Image
John Constantine is known for outsmarting his enemies, historically relying on his cunning to win, rather than defeating his opponents by force. John has always been portrayed as a self-defeating character, his own worst enemy – and this has been highlighted in several storylines where the antagonist turned out to be an alternative version of himself. John's carries the deaths and regrets of his past, which makes characters like "Golden Boy" and "Old John" uniquely equipped to manipulate Constantine, and as a result, they have proven to be the greatest villains he has ever faced.

Many powerful characters in the DC Universe solve their problems with force, but John Constantine isn't one of them. John is DC's greatest con man and often needs to outsmart his enemies to win. John has outsmarted gods and demons, and everything in between, but in the end, his greatest enemy has always been himself.

Several times in John's life,...

Gen V cast dish on Golden Boy's evolution and Wild Scenes
Image
The Boys expanded its universe with Gen V. The spinoff takes place at Godolkin University, where the next generation of Supes trains to be heroes. Established in 1965, the school's prestigious alumni include members of The Seven. Gen V's first season introduced a spectrum of new students, most notably Golden Boy/Luke (Patrick Schwarzenegger), Emma (Lizze Broadway), Cate (Maddie Phillips), Andre (Chance Perdomo), Marie (Jaz Sinclair), Jordan (Derek Luh/London Thor), and Rufus (Alexander Calvert).

But nearby, underground, lies the Woods -- a hidden, top-secret facility where sinister experiments are conducted on renegade Supes. As it turns out, one of the test subjects is Luke's brother, Sam (Asa Germann). Luke believed his sibling had passed away due to his girlfriend, Cate, altering his memories with her incredible telepathic abilities. That tampering ultimately resulted in Luke committing suicide by exploding high above in the air. Broadway, Germann, and Schwarzenegger recently spoke to Cbr about outrageous moments,...

1 Actor Quietly Appeared In Amazon's Two Big Superhero Franchises Back-To-Back
Image
Clancy Brown appeared in both Gen V and Invincible, showcasing his acting versatility in two superhero franchises. Despite his character's early demise in Gen V, Brown's role was crucial in setting the story of the spinoff. Amazon has been finding huge success with their superhero franchises and one actor quietly appeared in the platform's two flagship series'. Jaz Sinclair Had No Idea What Marie Moreau's Gen V Power Would Look Like, Reveals VFX Supervisor

The Boys spinoff Gen V expands the Vought Cinematic Universe with new heroes, villains, and insane moments, sparking debates about its superiority over the original. Jaz Sinclair had to perform her character's powers without knowing how they would look, creating challenges for her acting performances. Robert de Niro Never Did a Horror Movie Again After This Flop

Robert De Niro... The man, the myth, the legend. For over 40 years, De Niro has sat at the top of the Hollywood Golden Boy's table, proudly and deservedly lauded as one of the greatest actors of all time. He has one of the strongest, highest-quality bodies of work in film. From the many different starring and supporting roles across Martin Scorcese's classic filmography to the winning streak of wholesome comedy roles in nostalgic 2000s darlings like Meet The Parents or Silver Linings Playbook, De Niro has dominated pop culture through both arthouse cinema and commercial blockbusters, making him one of the few people deserving of being called a household name. In 1990, he lent his enormous talent to the horror genre for the first time in Scorsese's 1991 remake of Cape Fear playing the deranged killer out for revenge, Max Cady, with taunting glee. It's perhaps because of this...
