The acting of the cast is absolutely amazing. Also the scenery or what you call it, together with the costumes are also fantastic. The production has really managed to convey how difficult life was at the time for so many people. It makes you feel great full to live today. I've watched it with subtitles and I can't remember when I watched a German made movie or series, perhaps this was my first. I'm sure I'll watch many more now going forward, as this production is first class. Glad that I started to watch it, an important era for us to remember. Watching this, one hopes that history won't repeat itself... I'm surprised that I couldn't find any reviews.
I just finished watching this show and all I can say is wow. The plot and dialogues are well-thought and the cast and their acting skills are superb. What I also liked is the connection between characters and their development throughout these two seasons. Other than that, the original music performed in the episodes add up to the plot and the period in which the show was set in. The casting was great too. The only thing I disliked is the lack of depth in some characters' background. I think the main characters' background could have been covered more deeply. I'd definitely love to see more seasons in the future.
I am a person who is very interested in this period in time and having had family members who not only served in WW2 but also worked in factories building ships and planes to help the war effort, it's been so interesting to watch. PBS hit it out of the park with this series. I so hope they continue with MORE seasons. The cast and their chemistry with one another, is nothing short of magic. You will cheer for them, cry with and for them. The music, the clothing, the authentic feel of what it was like for those people, during that period of time, has been totally captured by PBS. Awesome job, folks !!!
While the acting was fine, am I the only watcher horrified by the anachronistic "jazz" of the 20s Berlin clubs? Given that much of this story centers around a young musician rebelling against conservative pre-Nazi Germany ...dontcha think they could get the club music right? The Billy Holiday wanabees; the Smokey Bill Evan's piano jazz & the ultra-serious gazes all struck me as tv faux at its worst. It all became enough of a distraction for me that I didn't finish the series. There Are BTW much better tv depictions of this perilous time just before Hitler's rise when a small percentage of the Germans knew "something was up." This is not one of those.
