As a fan of the cartoon, one of my favorites of all my life, I expected more for the first live-action version of the Woody Woodpecker. The result is a bit disappointing. Woody Woodpecker's first movie resulted in a silly, uninspired film with very poor acting. The good things are just the funny situations created by Woody and his characteristic laughter that animated my mornings in childhood and adolescence.
Everything about this movie feels lazy. Some of the actors did the best they could with the garbage they had to work with, but it's still hot garbage. Honestly, there's nothing redeeming about this movie. It's not cute, it's not funny, it's not endearing, it's not worth watching for free. My kids stumbled on this on Netflix and they giggled and asked to watch it again at some point. I'm deeply disturbed that they enjoyed this film. I'm not sure these are my kids.
It's because it stinks.
The acting stinks (Tim Omundson manages to be somewhat ok, but his character is empty and moronic).
The music stinks.
Woody Woodpecker's character and voicer is annoying, vapid, and obnoxious.
Everything and everyone is see through and one dimensional.
Universal was like, what's the crappiest thing we can do with a beloved character? Oh I know, let's butcher it with lazy writing and worse production.
Good grief it stinks.
There are a couple things wrong with this film. But let's see some good. They kept the original woody design which was nice to see. It's set in Seattle which was also good as a lot of films like this are usually set in new York. I'm out of good ok so. It's very corny in places. The acting is very cheesy and terrible and the kids are cringy even down to the buddy song. And why's a young girl running a music shop by herself for. Tommy's father's new bit on the side was one of the worst characters and was only there as a slight bit of eye candy and we get to the bad bad. It's woody himself and no it's not the animation or the voice acting of him it's the sound. Who ever did this and synced the voice made it sound like it was being recorded with a webcam. Poor audio quality through our. If not it might have been more decent. So overall this movie gets a four and makes it one of the worst live action adaptation of a beloved animation that i have seen.
