Animal detective solving has seldom been this cheap or uninvolving

It is easy to see why the animations of Dingo Pictures are relatively obscure, though those who have had the misfortune of seeing any of their output (which along with their equally low-budget computer animated counterpart Video Brinquedo have not once made anything worthwhile) cannot forget their awfulness. It is even easier to see why they are universally reviled.

'The Mouse Police' is not one of their worst. To me actually, it is one of their least bad, due to having a little bit more of a discernible story to usual, even if it takes a long time to get to it, and being one of very few animations of theirs to have completely original characters and not recycle existing ones from previous work. Their characteristic laziness, cheapness and very poor to terrible all round quality are all present though, as well as a lack of originality.

The animation is some of the worst there is, so awful it's unacceptable even for low-budget animation. It has flat colours, very simplistic backgrounds, lack of detail and shoddy and unintentionally creepy character designs. As well as a style that makes art of primary school children who draw and paint in half an hour or less seem more accomplished.

Music always sounds misplaced and never fitting with what's going on, not to mention that it has little breathing space even in scenes that are in dire need for it. The opening music is actually the least bad asset of 'The Mouse Police' but somehow didn't seem like it belonged, more like opening music for a video game.

Script is incredibly repetitive and juvenile, some of it making one question who the target audience was meant to be, that it will insult any adult is bad enough but even young children will feel dumber after hearing some of the dialogue here. There is more of a story here and a slightly more cohesive one, it does however takes a long time to get there and there is a real lack of tension, mystery and suspense, the dullness is non-stop. Target audience is also a big problem, too dull and juvenile for adults and too confused and weird for younger audiences.

Characters are excruciatingly irritating and a few irrelevant to the story. Not a likable or interesting character among them, most of them being nerve-gratingly annoying or too sugary that it makes the teeth hurt. Meanwhile, the sound effects are bizarre and randomly placed and the voice acting throughout is ill-fitting, constantly depressed-sounding and just grates on the nerves.

In conclusion, may be one of the studio's least bad but still very poor. 2/10 Bethany Cox
