Exclusive: Following the release of his latest feature, the true story marijuana trafficking pic Kid Cannabis, multi-hyphenate John Stockwell has signed with Paradigm. The actor, writer, director and producer started his career acting in films like Losin’ It and Top Gun, both opposite Tom Cruise, starred in miniseries North and South, and battled a killer car in Stephen King’s Christine. Stockwell’s screenwriting credits include Blue Crush, Rock Star, Under Cover, Dangerously Close, and Kid Cannabis. He also wrote the Emmy-nominated telefilm Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden, episodes of Showtime’s The L Word, and Cheaters. The latter earned Stockwell an Emmy nod for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie. He broke through as a director with 2001′s Crazy/Beautiful and 2002′s surfing pic Blue Crush, following with a run of features behind the camera including Into the Blue, Turistas, Cat Run, and Dark Tide.

"Veep" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home her fourth career win, and her second for her HBO comedy, at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday (Sept. 22), while "Breaking Bad" actress Anna Gunn earned her first award ever for her final season as Skylar White.

Airing on President’s Day Weekend, the telecast delivered 3.4 million viewers Sunday evening. The highest single telecast viewership in the channel’s history. Unlike History channel, which recently took a great leap forward in creating its own line up of scripted programs by bringing in the multiple award-winning miniseries ‘Hatfields & McCoys‘ and the upcoming dramatic series ‘Vikings,’ National Geographic Channel has taken a slightly more cinematic approach to the kind of original content it has chosen to air.

With all the attention Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is getting as the headlining drama on the hunt and takedown of Usama Bin Laden, and its potentially ethical quandary of changing the truth to fit its own desired narrative or simply telling a truth the government wished kept secret, it's easy to overlook any other iterations on that story that have been made into films recently. Among those are John Stockwell's Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden, which deals more with the bang bang than it does the legwork, and stars Cam Gigandet, Kathleen Robertson, Xzibit, and Anson Mount. One title you'll notice in the new release date section at the bottom of today's post is the extended edition of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, a film that is already too long to begin with and yet somehow they have managed to find a way to add another eight minutes to it. The series marks the first time cameras have been allowed by the U.S. Air Force to follow rescue teams like Pararescuemen, Pave Hawk helicopter pilots and combat rescue officers. The reality series is based in Afghanistan over a four-month deployment. Howard T. Owens, president of National Geographic Channels told Variety that "Having a camera layout for 'Inside Combat Rescue' that was not obtrusive and allowed these PJs to do their work and save lives was crucial. We gained unrivaled access to 130 missions where 108 lives were saved." As far as "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden" goes, that starred Cam Gigandet, Anson Mount, Freddy Rodriguez, Xzibit, Kathleen Robertson, Robert Knepper and Eddie Kaye Thomas. So the three-movie idea is more likely down to financial demands than creative ones, and the now-notorious higher frame rate reduces cinematic spectacle to pin-sharp TV movie, but this is terrifically wrought escapism. Freeman is the perfect lead, too. But what could have, should have been a masterpiece ends up a fantasy epic with too much epic and not enough fantasy.

The latter redeems a movie that's almost too manically clever for its own good. Reality barely enters into this story of a blocked screenwriter caught up in a dognapping escapade, but there's never a dull moment. Perhaps it could do with a few.

This Harvey Weinstein-produced docudrama borrows from The Hurt Locker and Homeland to give us a grisly rendition of a decisive moment in the war on terror

This film is the point at which Harvey Weinstein, exploitation-movie impresario extraordinaire, meets Harvey Weinstein, Democratic big-money donor and activist. On the one hand, Weinstein is working an old grindhouse promotional gambit: riding the publicity coattails of a more prestigious and expensive feature of similar theme or provenance – in this case Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty – and attempting to reach the screens before it, the better to dine, vampirishly, on a percentage of the profits. The Democratic activist in Weinstein, meanwhile, was surely horrified when Columbia delayed the Bigelow picture until after the presidential election, and was damned if his version wasn't going to make some sort of splash before that date.

Working once again with Seal Team 6 director John Stockwell, Harvey considers this expose a 'comedy', and as is evident in this first teaser trailer, they are going the George W. Bush route in the way the are presenting Mitt Romney as a blathering, fidgety buffoon. Of course, this is being released on Election Day. Its still early, the polls won't close for a while. Take a look at this documentary trailer, and see if it sways you one way or the other. Bradley Cooper provides the narration, because who better to get our political information from than a forty-year-old manchild who acts like he's still pledging a frat.

Exclusive: Forget the postponement announced this morning by Harvey Weinstein and National Geographic that moved today’s premiere of Seal Team 6: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden to Thursday. The film’s playing in DC today after all, with one major change: the screening will be held at 6 Pm at the Hay Adams Hotel (where Weinstein is staying, and which is a block away from the White House at 800 16th Street Northwest). Weinstein tells me that the Hurricane Sandy postponement left him feeling blue, and when the hotel manager asked why and learned of the scrapped screening, the manager offered up his 50-inch screen in a ballroom overlooking the White House and the Washington Monument, and Weinstein made a decision. “The show must go on,” he said. “We don’t want anybody to be unsafe, but if you’re just walking across the street or down the block, why not come?...

The Weinstein Company's "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden" premieres on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday, November 4th, marking the first foray into an original scripted film for a network previously associated with nature programming. Helmed by Stockwell from the script by Kendall Lampkin, The Weinstein Co release stars Cam Gigandet, Anson Mount, Freddy Rodriguez, Xzibit, Kenneth Miller, Kathleen Robertson, William Fichtner, Mo Gallini, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Lora Martinez-Cunningham. Code Name Geronimo tells the story from the perspective of a small contingent of Navy SEALs involved in the military incursion into Bin Laden's compound. Pic looks inside their lives as tension rises until they learn on their latest target code name Geronimo. There's no set release date for this one as yet. We've known for a while now that there were two competing movies about the killing of Osama Bin Laden in development, but we've since learned that they will both premiere before the end of the year. Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is out this December with its sights clearly set on Oscar season, but now John Stockwell's Seal Team Six (formerly known as Code Name: Geronimo) is swooping in to steal the spotlight by premiering over a month earlier... on The National Geographic Channel. Although there is some big name talent involved, the fact that it has now been relegated to made-for-tv status definitely makes it seem a lot less like a true competitor to Kathryn Bigelow's film. The first trailer for Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden has gone online.  With as historical an event as the death of bin Laden, you would think that either this film or Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty would have provided a sense of tension, raised stakes or even a question of moral ambiguity that surely came with the operation.  Neither trailer gives a sense of this, so at least Seal Team Six isn't out of its league with Bigelow's bigger budget. While Universal and Kathryn Bigelow ducked brewing controversy around their upcoming "Zero Dark Thirty" by moving the film from its previously planned release date this month to December 19th, to avoid any charges that they were trying to influence voters over to Team Obama, Harvey Weinstein is stepping right into the fray. Earlier this year, The Weinstein Company picked up "Code Name: Geronimo"—a sort of budget version take of the same material—and now their planning to launch the subtly retitled "Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden" one day before election. No one does it like Harvey... Directed by John Stockwell, the movie has the kind of cast you might guess would be assembled by the guy who made "Turistas," with the host of "Pimp My Ride," Finch from "American Pie" and the eternally cast and never remembered Cam Gigandet among the "names." Eddie Kaye Thomas talks about returning as Finch in the comedy sequel American Reunion, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD July 10

Like most of his cast mates, Eddie Kaye Thomas was not a household name before the release of the surprise hit American Pie. He had just a handful of credits to his name, including guest starring stints on Felicity and Law & Order before the breakthrough 1999 comedy, where he portrayed the mother-loving Finch. 13 years later, the actor reprises his role in American Reunion, arriving on Blu-ray and DVD July 10. I recently had the chance to speak with Eddie Kaye Thomas over the phone about reuniting with the cast for once last slice of comedic pie. Here's what he had to say.

Cam Gigandet and longtime love Dominique Geisendorff are expecting their second child, JustJared.com confirms.

The couple, who were spotted strolling on the beach in Malibu, Calif. on Wednesday, are already parents to daughter Everleigh Rae, 3.

Gigandet, 29, can next be seen in the film Free Ride, costarring Anna Paquin, and will soon appear in Red Sky and Code Name: Geronimo as well.

The lovely Emily Browning ('Sucker Punch', 'Sleeping Beauty') is to be joined by actor Cam Gigandet (below) in her new feature outing 'Plush'. The sexually tense thriller co-written, produced and directed by 'Red Riding Hood' helmer Catherine Hardwicke will see Gigandet play a psychic psychologist who helps his patients by seeing their memories. This will be the second time that Hardwicke and the 29-year old actor have worked together after Cam starred in the vampire bore-fest that was 'Twilight' which she also directed. Hardwicke co-wrote the script alongside Artie Nelson and Gigandet is currently shooting on Navy Seals action thriller 'Code Name: Geronimo'....

Cannes is, ultimately, both an exhibition of wonderful films and a celebration of the very medium, but there’s a very good amount of business taking place after the screenings finish — and, many times, for films that don’t even play in competition. So, as things kick off over in France, Variety reports that The Weinstein Company have procured international rights to The Sapphires, a music biopic — starring, most notably, Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) — that will play as part of the festival’s Midnight Screenings.

The film tells of four Aboriginal girls (Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman, Shari Sebbens, and Miranda Tapsell) that are snatched up by a rowdy Irish producer (O’Dowd), who takes them to Vietnam to entertain American soldiers during the war. Wayne Blair directed the film, while Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson have written the screenplay.
