Paramount Global, Swinging to Q1 Profit, Maintains Skydance Deal Will Close by June
Image
Paramount Global, under scrutiny as it works to complete a deal that will have it acquired by Skydance Media, said it swung to a profit in its fiscal first quarter, boosted by revenue increases from its film and streaming businesses. The company’s largest operation, its TV networks, grappled with downturns in ad sales tied to comparisons with the year-earlier quarter, when a Super Bowl broadcast generated outsize revenue.

The New York owner of CBS, Comedy Central and the Paramount movie studio said net income in the first quarter came to $550 million, compared with a loss of $417 million in the year-earlier period.

Paramount said its Skydance deal was still “expected to close in the first half of 2025,” a projection that suggests the company remains confident in its prospects despite a legal skirmish it has with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” broadcast that featured an interview with former U.

Image
One of the best action war movies in recent memory is getting a sequel, and it's fast approaching. Filmmaker Jalmari Helander is quickly climbing his way to the top of the most exciting action movie directors. It all started with the surprise international hit, 2010's Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, which combined action, folk horror, and Christmas to create an unforgettable cult classic. 'Sisu 2' Strikes Gold With a Brand-New Release Date — and It's Sooner Than You Think
Image
We all love a sequel that pops out of nowhere, and for some titles it's even more exciting when it happens. Back in 2023, Sisu took the world by storm by pairing up John Wick elements with Nazis in World War II — and a dog, of course. Even though it seemed like a one-and-done deal, the potential for more entries in the story was always there. That's why fans were excited to find out a couple of months ago that Sisu 2 was in development and production was moving at a lightning-fast pace. Now, the new installment is set to premiere in theaters on November 21.

Details of Sisu 2 are still kept under wraps, but considering that the war action movie hits theaters in seven months, we're bound to see a trailer soon. By the end of the first movie, protagonist Aatami (Jorma Tommila) was left in pretty bad shape after...

Sony Dates ‘Sisu’ Sequel for This Fall
Image
“Sisu” has returned.

Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems will release Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Stage 6 Films’ sequel to “Sisu” theatrically on Nov. 21, 2025. Prepare yourself.

Jalmari Helander will return to write and direct, with Jorma Tommila returning to the lead role, alongside newcomers Richard Brake and Stephen Lang.

While plot details for the sequel are being kept under wraps, the original film was set in 1944 and followed Aatami Korpi (Tommila), a Finnish man who runs afoul of Nazis who, while in retreat, are looking to do as much damage as possible. “Sisu” comes from the Finnish word that encapsulates the concept of inner strength and courage. And boy does he ever show it. The original film is a rip-roaring historical action extravaganza that has to be seen to be believed.

Helander is one of the most exciting European filmmakers working today, with his earlier films “Rare Exports” and “Big Game” showcasing...

Sony’s Screen Gems Sets Fall Theatrical Release For ‘Sisu’ Sequel
Image
Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems is releasing a sequel to Jalmari Helander’s gritty World War II action movie Sisu, with the Finnish filmmaker returning to write and direct. A November 21 theatrical release this year has been set.

Why doesn’t Lionsgate, which acquired U.S. on the film out of 2022’s TIFF Midnight Madness, handle the sequel? Essentially Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions’ Stage 6 Films sold domestic and kept the rest of the world (except Finland) on the first movie which made $14M global, $7.2M of that stateside. Stage 6 opted to keep global on part two.

Sisu follows an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness and tries to take the loot into the city where he clashes with a brutal SS officer and German soldiers.

Stage 6 Film’s SVP of creative development and production, Eric Charles, oversaw the film for the studio.

Jorma Tommila returns in the lead role,...

The 25 Best Modern Action Movies
Image
Everyone likes a good action movie, but everyone loves a great one. The art of the action genre has evolved in the last few decades, as visual effects have shoved human on-set accomplishment to the side, and many of the biggest blockbusters are made largely in a computer. There are plenty of wonderful movies made that way, but if we’re being honest, our tastes lean more towards fights and stunts and shootouts that make our blood pump and our bodies involuntarily flinch because, dang it, that looks like it’s gotta hurt.

So, allowing for the fact that there are enough films to populate a Top 100, here are our picks for The 25 Best Modern Action Movies, from the year 2000 to today. Every year more movies push the boundaries of what the action genre is capable of, so we look forward to having to update this over the years to...

According to the source, the crew "knew this is probably not going to be a good film" when reshoots commenced last summer and dealt with several "frustrations" along the way. The Captain America: Brave New World Cameo We Did Not Expect
Image
With the Red Hulk coming into the MCU in a big way, much of the attention for Captain America: Brave New World gravitated there. However, with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) taking the shield, there was always a chance for a Brave New World cameo or two. After all, Sam has great relationships with the Wakandans, the other Avengers, and even international teams. Despite this, there had been talk for months that one of our favorite Cap-adjacent actors would go missing from Brave New World. Luckily, that proved false.

Thunderbolts* Star Lewis Pullman Drops An Intriguing Hint About Where We Find The Sentry In The Movie
Image
The latest trailer for Thunderbolts* left us with more huge questions about the Marvel Studios movie, including what the deal is with The Sentry now we know he'll unleash The Void on New York City.

Looking at the footage released so far, it appears the team will encounter "Bob" in an abandoned military base before returning him to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. From there, he'll likely suit up as the unhinged superhero in what was once Avengers Tower.

Talking to Empire (via @cosmic_marvel), Lewis Pullman shared an intriguing hint about Bob's status quo when Thunderbolts* begins. "He doesn’t really remember a lot of things," the actor teased. "He doesn't know how he got where he is."

The comic book version of Robert Reynolds has also suffered from memory issues, forgetting he was The Sentry until the New Avengers helped him remember his past.

We'd bet on the McU's...

Thunderbolts* "Big Game" TV Spot, Stills, International Poster, New Synopsis, And Composer Revealed
Image
Yesterday evening's Super Bowl saw Marvel Studios release a "Big Game" trailer for Thunderbolts* (you can check it out here if you missed it) and we now have even more new content from the movie.

For starters, it's been announced that Son Lux will be scoring Thunderbolts*. The three-member, American experimental band was Oscar and BAFTA- nominated for their score for 2022's best picture Everything Everywhere All at Once, and this is an unexpected, exciting move on Marvel Studios' part.

We also have an updated synopsis for the movie teasing the team's battle with the villainous Valentina Allegra de Fontaine:

In 'Thunderbolts*,' Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes - Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force...

Lilo & Stitch: Experiment 626 Invades The Super Bowl In Hilarious "Big Game" TV Spot And Poster
Image
The hope was that yesterday evening's Super Bowl might finally bring us the first Lilo & Stitch trailer. Well, while there's still no sign of footage from the movie itself, we do have a fun new "Big Game" TV spot featuring Experiment 626 on the loose at the Super Bowl.

Disney appears to be having a blast marketing its next live-action remake, with previous posters and teasers showing Experiment 626 poking fun at Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, and even laying waste to the House of Mouse's iconic castle.

In this "Big Game" preview, Stitch causes chaos at the Super Bowl as only he can. Like the poster that joins in, the TV spot is pretty hilarious. However, a trailer offering a better idea of what's to come in this reimagining of the animated 2002 classic does now feel overdue.

It's been more than two decades since Lilo & Stitch was released, but...

Toothless Takes Flight In Epic How To Train Your Dragon "Big Game" TV Spot - New Trailer Arrives On Wednesday
Image
The animated How to Train Your Dragon franchise is one of DreamWorks' most popular and commercially successful properties. That's why the Isle of Berk is coming to Universal Orlando's Epic Universe, and Universal Pictures is going all-in on the upcoming live-action remake.

That includes dropping a new "Big Game" TV spot (via SFFGazette.com) for the movie during today's Super Bowl. As well as some familiar shots from the teaser trailer, we now see Hiccup and Toothless take flight in what promises to be an epic sequence. There are dragons galore and they all look suitably impressive.

Along with this sneak peek, we can also share the news that a new trailer for How to Train Your Dragon will be released on Wednesday.

Much has been said about the possibility of How To Train Your Dragon is a shot-for-shot remake of the DreamWorks Animation classic released in 2010. Time will tell on that front,...

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Gets An Action-Packed, Stunt-Filled New "Big Game" TV Spot
Image
Paramount Pictures has released the "Big Game" TV spot Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and, after celebrating the franchise's past, we see more of what appears to be Tom Cruise's last mission as the iconic Ethan Hunt.

If so, the actor will go out on a high, especially if the stunts teased here are any indication of what to expect from the movie. We also see the returning characters who will be at Hunt's side, with Pom Klementieff's fan-favourite assassin, Paris, among them.

Despite reports that, like its predecessor, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning's budget has spiralled out of control, all signs point to it being money well spent.

Whether it will be a bigger draw than 2023's Dead Reckoning - Part One ("Part Two" was dropped from this movie's title before it was renamed The Final Reckoning) remains to be seen.

During a recent interview,...

Thunderbolts* Super Bowl Trailer Previews the Team's Melodramatic and Comedic Struggles
Image
A new feature-length Thunderbolts* trailer is here, and it's not shy about its cast being the unlikeliest of good guys.

A full Big Game trailer dropped on Marvel's YouTube page following its Super Bowl debut, previewing a brand new threat and, as warned by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, "The Avengers are not coming." As a result, Bucky Barnes coerces Yelena Belova, John Walker, Red Guardian, Taskmaster, and Ghost to assist him in stopping the threat, despite the team worrying their powers against this villain are limited to "just punch and shoot." The rest of the trailer sees the team evading special forces, causing their fair share of destruction, and Yelena (Florence Pugh) doubting the plan's success because none of them are truly heroes, only for Red Guardian to re-inspire her with a pep talk. He also comedically expresses hope the Thunderbolts' achievements can land them on a box of Wheaties,...

Duracell’s Super Bowl Shock: Commercial Shows Tom Brady Running Out of Power
Image
Battery giant Duracell hoped for a Super Bowl shock Sunday when it tied its well-known power units to Tom Brady, the famous quarterback who is capping off a first season as an NFL announcer for Fox.

A commercial for the Berkshire Hathaway storage cell makes viewers think they have returned to the Big Game from an ad break, with Fox Sports’ Brady and his on-air partner, Kevin Burkhardt, talking to viewers about the action. “All right, Tom, your thoughts?” asks Burkhardt. Before Brady can get out a single word, he appears to shut down.

Within seconds, a “Duracell Scientist” appears on the scene and immediately diagnoses the problem: Someone has powered Brady with non-descript batteries, and “winners like Tom here only run on Duracell.” The quarterback’s inner machinery says he also likes blueberry smoothies, avocado and lemon, but it’s Duracell that gets Brady back to full power quickly.

Jurassic World Rebirth "Big Game" Super Bowl TV Spot Unleashes A Hoard Of Mutant Dinosaurs
Image
The first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth was released earlier this week but Universal Pictures still unleashed dinosaurs on the Super Bowl with an epic minute-long "Big Game" TV spot.

If you caught the aforementioned sneak peek, much of the footage here will be familiar to you. However, we do see more of this team interacting and new glimpses of the dinosaurs they'll be forced to contend with (including the Rancor-like creature that's making this feel more like a horror movie than the expected action-adventure).

"These are the dinosaurs that didn’t work. There’s some mutations in there," longtime franchise producer Frank Marshall said of the dinosaurs deemed too dangerous for the original Jurassic Park. "They’re all based on real dinosaur research, but they look a little different."

Filmmaker Gareth Edwards teased, "When you make a creature, you get a big, massive pot and you pour in your...

Thunderbolts* "Big Game" Trailer Released - The Avengers Are Missing And Sentry's Darkness Is Unleashed!
Image
Marvel Studios has released a new trailer for Thunderbolts* and The Sentry is finally unleashed! Interestingly, the character is largely hidden in shadow, though there's likely a good reason for that.

A literal shadow falls over New York City, suggesting this isn't The Sentry the McU's newest superhero team is facing. No, it's The Void, Robert Reynolds' darker half, and a force that, in the comics, is damn-near unstoppable.

We'd imagine The Sentry's classic costume will be showcased before this insanely powerful - and, uh, insane - super soldier's darker half puts the world at risk. However, with the Avengers still M.I.A., only the Thunderbolts can stop him.

Much of the latest Thunderbolts* trailer is devoted to exploring the team's dynamic. While this may not be a comic-accurate lineup, it feels like Marvel Studios has chosen well with these characters from franchises like The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,...

Disney+ literally promotes murder in new campaign
Image
From making Cinderella Castle look like a giant birthday cake to covering the park in toilet paper, Disney has pulled some strange promotional stunts in its day. While those two examples are laughable, some choices make us say "Are you sure about that, Disney?"

Disney+ is one of the biggest streaming services on the market, especially after the Hulu merger. As the service's collection of content continues to grow, Disney is pushing for more subscribers with its approach, but one recent ad isn't as magical as the company might think.

What did they just say?

Disney+ just dropped its "What If" Big Game trailer leading up to the Super Bowl. The footage above shows just a small sampling of what subscribers can expect from the realms of Walt Disney Animation, Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and more, all narrated with the surreal silky tones of what we assume to be Josh Gad.

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan Recreate ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Fake Orgasm Scene for Hellmann’s Super Bowl Ad With Sydney Sweeney
Image
One of the things about Sally Albright that drives Harry Burns crazy in the 1989 movie “When Harry Met Sally” is her picky food sensibilities. It takes her an hour and a half to make a sandwich, he tells her. In the sequel, she only has 30 seconds.

The characters, famously played by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, return to New York’s Katz’ Delicatessen for a reprise of one of the movie’s best-known scenes in which Sally pretends to have an orgasm while the pair dines. Now, they will also promote Hellmann’s mayonnaise in the Super Bowl.

With the movie recently reaching its 35th anniversary and being accepted into the National Film Registry, “it just felt like the perfect storm for us to get back together at the same table and have indigestion,” says Crystal, during a recent interview.

Hellmann’s, which is owned by the consumer-products giant Unilever,...

Tubi to Stream Super Bowl Lix Live in First for Fox-Owned Platform
Image
Super Bowl Lix will be everywhere on February 9.

The 2025 Super Bowl is set to air on Fox, and will also be available on Fox Deportes, the NFL’s digital properties and on NBCUniversal’s Telemundo (thanks to a deal between the companies last year).

In a first, however, the Big Game will also stream for free on Tubi, Fox’s ad-supported video service. Fox last had the game in 2023, and while it streamed for free without pay-tv authentication on the Fox Sports app and website, Tubi was not included.

That will change this time, with Tubi reporting earlier this month that it now has 97 million monthly active users. The NFL has long pushed to make the Big Game as accessible as possible for consumers, ensuring it remains the biggest TV event of the year in the U.S.

Super Bowl Lix is set to be played on Sunday, Feb. 9 in New Orleans at the Superdome.

The Boys Season 5 Set Photos Confirm Major Plot Point; Reveal First Look At New Supe Team - Spoilers
Image
In the season 4 finale of The Boys, Homelander took a major step towards taking full control of the United States by removing all political obstacles and rounding-up his enemies, including Mother's Milk, Frenchie, Kimiko, and Hughie (only Starlight and Butcher remain at large).

It was strongly hinted that Homelander's plan would involve interning those who opposed him in prison camps, and we now have confirmation that "Freedom Camps" will indeed be employed for this purpose.

These latest set photos reveal adverts for the camps on the sides of some buses, which also provide a first look at new Supe team, Teenage Kix.

This group is a parody of the likes of the Young Avengers and Teen Titans, and counts A-Train, Sister Sage and the late Popclaw among its former members. In the comics, the roster also includes Big Game, Jetstreak, Hyperion, Shout Out and Mesme.

Check out the photos at the link below.

Marvel Is Eyeing a Major Resurrection in 2025 And I Think I Know Who It Is, But I Hope I'm Wrong
Image
Warning! Spoilers for last year's Wolverine #50, and speculation about this year's Wolverine #7 ahead!

The advanced synopsis for an upcoming issue of Marvel's current ongoing Wolverine series teases "a surprising return you'll have to read to believe" – and, for better or worse, I have a feeling it's going to be the hero's arch-nemesis Sabretooth, less than a full year after he was killed off in a climactic confrontation with Logan at the end of the Sabretooth War arc, which concluded the previous Wolverine series.

Wolverine #7 – written by Saladin Ahmed, with art by Martín Cóccolo – also promises a "shock twist," as Marvel continues its attempt to push its most iconic mutant character in a bold new direction.

That said, Sabretooth War was a genuinely epic culmination of over four years of ambitious storytelling. It set an imposingly high bar, and constituted an incredibly hard act to follow for the relaunched title – something...

First Superman TV Spot Released As Creature Commandos Still Reveal New Look At The Dcu's Clayface
Image
The first trailer for Superman was released earlier this week - you can watch it here in case you've been living under a Kryptonite-shaped rock - and TV spots for the movie are already airing on U.S. television.

There isn't any new footage (and it's yet to be officially released) but the promo below was shown during Saturday Night Live on NBC. Warner Bros. and DC Studios clearly aren't sparing any expense and we'd be shocked if Superman doesn't get a Super Bowl TV spot next year.

In fact, early February would be a great time to drop a new look at the reboot seeing as it's heading our way in July. With rumours swirling about the first The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer debuting during the Big Game, the movies may go head-to-head sooner than expected.

We'll have to wait and see, and after the trailer broke records,...

Bigger Than Civil War: Mark Millar Explains What Would Bring Him Back to Marvel
Image
During a podcast appearance, legendary comic book writer Mark Millar briefly spoke about the conditions under which he would return to Marvel Comics, for whom he authored the groundbreaking Civil War storyline in 2006-07 suggesting that he would only come back for something that was even "bigger," more ambitious, and more impactful.

Speaking on the Word Balloon podcast, Millar admitted that he has an idea for what this massive story would be, but of course he kept this tightly under wraps during his conversation with host John Siuntres.

Civil War stands as one of the most pivotal storylines in Marvel history. In many ways, it redefined the idea of a huge event series; every crossover that has followed, from both Marvel and DC, has in some way been indebted to Millar's epic.

Mark Millar Would Only Return To Marvel For A Story "Bigger Than Civil War" The Writer Named This...

Critic’s Notebook: Why Sports Docs Are Some of the Best Dramas on TV
Image
Beginning on July 24, the Paris Olympics will measure athletic greatness in finite windows of time.

Noah Lyles will run 100 meters in comfortably under 10 seconds. It will take a bit longer — more than 15 minutes — for Katie Ledecky to swim 1,500 meters. French baller Victor Wembanyama will attempt to burnish his growing legend in 40-minute increments.

The NBCU family will, once again, trot out the usual assortment of retired jocks, veteran journalists and Snoop Dogg to offer the reminder that a sport isn’t just the game itself, but all of the storytelling that comes with it. Sports is entertainment, and in 2024, entertainment means television. This won’t surprise any small-screen obsessive; lately, “television” and “sports” have become frequently interchangeable terms.

The primary explanation for that is simple: In a world of delayed viewing, live events are the Holy Grail for everybody. It’s the reason that last year’s list of “most...

Is It Possible To Curve A Bullet Like In Wanted?
Image
Bullets can't be curved as shown in 2008's Wanted MythBusters proved the bullet curve isn't possible Centripetal force and Magnus effect are theoretical possibilities, but they are difficult to utilize.

The 2008 action movie Wanted sees its characters fire bullet shots that curve in mid-air to hit their marks, begging the question of whether this is actually possible. The film, which starred James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie, is based on a comic series by celebrated writer Mark Millar and received a positive reaction from audiences and critics. It boasts solid critical scores for an action movie and grossed $342.5 million at the box office, becoming a hit for Universal Pictures.

Given its success, it's surprising that Wanted never received a sequel, despite the prospects of it being discussed for over a decade. The option was discussed, and a sequel was planned that would have expanded the world, introducing many new characters. Angelina Jolie wasn't interested in returning,...

Why Did it Take So Long for the NFL and Netflix to Partner? Why Now Is Perfect Time for Christmas Day Deal
Image
As the world’s largest streaming service and the most popular sport in the United States, Netflix and the NFL have seemed like natural allies for some time.

As the streaming giant noted on social media when it made the announcement, you can’t spell Netflix without NFL. The world’s largest streaming service is now an official game distributor for the top sports league in the United States after it was confirmed on Wednesday that Netflix would offer Christmas Day NFL games in each of the next three seasons, marking the largest investment by the streamer in live sports in its history. The deal is a massive step for Netflix and the NFL alike, considering the conservative approach to sports streaming taken by both companies thus far. That caution is one of the biggest reasons that it took so long for the two sides to team up, as both...

Super Bowl Ad Review: Celebrity Commercials Tried for Fun, but Many Stuck With Formula
Image
Advertisers who normally use the Super Bowl to create commercials that make your jaw drop instead were content if they could get just a little smile.

For the second consecutive year, Madison Avenue relied on a massive parade of celebrities to capture consumer attention, foregoing in many cases the social messages and dynamic creative concepts that have generated chatter in the past. Where the Super Bowl was once the setting for Apple’s still-talked-about “1984” commercial or Procter & Gamble’s clever insertion of Tide into a bevy of ads, it’s now become a place for formulaic cameos of famous faces.

“It’s like a celebrity arms race,” says Simon Bruyn, executive creative director at Mother, an independent agency. “It’s like one celebrity isn’t enough.”

Super Bowl viewers saw Danny DeVito join Arnold Schwarzenegger for State Farm; Pete Davidson work with Kate McKinnon for Hellmann’s; Heidi Gardner...

‘Deadpool 3’, ‘Twisters’, ‘Quiet Place: Day One’, ‘Inside Out 2’ Among Potential Super Bowl Movie Spots

The aftermath of the strikes may have rattled the domestic box office, which is 13% behind the same period a year ago. But that’s not stopping Paramount, Universal and Disney from spending a record $7 million per 30-second spot to show off their movie wares on Super Bowl Sunday.

Despite the box office taking a hit, most major studio (and streaming) execs really expect that it’s temporary; the best means for downstream monies and eventizing remains in theatrical. What better time to do it than before an audience of 100 million viewers when the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs butt heads this Sunday.
