This month brings bad news for action, Tom Hardy, and Mad Max fans, and it’s all thanks to Netflix. Beginning back in 1979 and starring the now controversial Hollywood icon (and “Special Ambassador”) Mel Gibson as the titular “Mad” Max Rockatansky, Oscar-nominee and Venom star Tom Hardy took over the lead role in the critically acclaimed 2015 sequel, Mad Max: Fury Road.
While the Mad Max movie has now sparked a spin-off in last year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, fans don’t have long to once again bask in the high-speed action delight of the Fury Road, as the Tom Hardy-led sequel is all set to leave Netflix on March 30, 2025. Mad Max: Fury Road was co-written, co-produced, and directed by George Miller, and sees Hardy take over from Gibson as the post-apocalyptic survivor and road warrior "Mad Max" Rockatansky, joining forces with Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. John Wick star, and still the most underrated action icon fighting the good fight, Scott Adkins will bring his particular set of skills to World War II later this year. Adkins, who is well-known to action fans thanks to his roles in the likes of the Undisputed franchise, Accident Man, Avengement, and One Shot, has finally seen his star rise thanks to his scene-stealing part as Killa Harkan, the head of the German Table, in John Wick: Chapter 4. Now, he’s fighting for his life as a prisoner of war.
New details have now emerged about the project, with the war action thriller changing its title from Death March to Prisoner of War. The movie was picked up for distribution by Well Go USA at the end of last year, with Prisoner of War having now been given a September release window (via Action-Flix).

Now that we know the Jason Statham action sequel The Beekeeper 2 is officially happening, genre fans are buzzing and have found the perfect martial arts icon to join The Stath in the highly anticipated follow-up. Taking to social media, Statham fans are pleading with The Beekeeper 2 director Timo Tjahjanto to add The Raid star Iko Uwais to proceedings, with X/Twitter user @Dedikur21 kicking things off by saying, “I beg you work with Iko Uwais again and cast him in Beekeeper 2. Make a proper round 2 for this two.”
Jason Statham and Iko Uwais have shared the screen, and exchanged punches, before in 2023’s Expend4bles. Sadly, while both actors committed to kicking each other to death, both the movie and the fight scene were ultimately a disappointment. Havoc director Gareth Evans recently opened up about the fight sequences in his upcoming Netflix movie, which will be led by Oscar nominee Tom Hardy. Evans first gained global recognition for his incredible work in the 2011 Indonesian action thriller The Raid.
During a recent interview with Empire, Evans confirmed that Havoc won’t be like his previous action movies, such as 2009's Merantau and the popular The Raid franchise, where the action sequences heavily featured martial-arts fights. Instead, the movie would feature more gunplay. "It was never going to be a martial-arts film," he said. "I wanted this to feel like the gunplay stuff that I love watching." Evans also hyped up Hardy's performance, teasing that the viewers would get to see the Mad Max: Fury Road actor deliver brutal and intense fight sequences.

After waiting several years for its arrival, the action movie majesty of Havoc, which sees The Raid director Gareth Evans join forces with Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy for this Netflix thriller, is almost upon us. And it certainly sounds like it could boast not just one of Hardy’s best performances, but Havoc has the potential to be one of the best action movies of all time, with Evans promising that the actor is in “f*cking beast mode.”
Speaking with Empire, who have also revealed a new image from Havoc which you can check out below, Evans teased how Havoc will differ from his previous action masterpieces The Raid and The Raid 2. Havoc will involve far more gunplay, and a little less martial arts, than Evans’ previous works, with Hardy at the center as an unstoppable, granite-built action hero.

Gareth Evans’ Havoc has been a long time coming, but the gritty action flick is finally set to be released next month on Netflix. As a massive fan of The Raid and The Raid 2, I’m hugely excited to see what Evans has up his sleeve this time. The director told Empire that Havoc marks a shift from martial arts action to gritty gunplay and that Tom Hardy was more than up for the challenge.
“It was never going to be a martial-arts film,” Evans explained. “I wanted this to feel like the gunplay stuff that I love watching… Tom came to us in f***ing beast mode. I tapped him on the shoulder and it was just like granite. He came fully physically prepared.“

Havocwriter and director Gareth Evans explains how his upcoming Netflix action movie features Tom Hardy in "f*cking beast mode." Known for directing action movies like The Raid: Redemption (2011) and The Raid 2 (2014), Evans' new movie follows Hardy's Walker, a detective who must fight his way through the criminal underworld to rescue a kidnapped politician's son. In addition to Hardy, the Havoc cast features Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant, and Luiz Guzmán, with the initial teaser trailer promising that the film will be a violent ride for audiences.
In a recent interview with Empire ahead of the Havoc release on Netflix on April 25, Evans previews some of what's to come from the film. The movie will mark a subtle shift away from something like The Raid 2 in the sense that Evans says, “It was never going to be a martial-arts film." Gareth Evans is undeniably one of the greatest action directors working today. And now, over a decade after he delivered The Raid 2, he’s back with his first action movie since that head-exploding sequel. Make way for Havoc, a bruising crime thriller packed with wince-worthy action – this time with Tom Hardy in the leading role. And where The Raid and its follow-up leaned into the martial arts prowess of Evans’ regular collaborator Iko Uwais, the brawls in Havoc are tailored to Hardy’s hulking physique.
“It was never going to be a martial-arts film,” Evans tells Empire, speaking to a subtle shift in action sub-genres. “I wanted this to feel like the gunplay stuff that I love watching.” You’ll see Hardy blasting a shotgun above, but Havoc also makes use of the A-lister’s sheer heft. “Tom came to us in fucking beast mode,” says Evans. “I tapped...

Firstly, a pedantic note: while that phrase makes for a nice bit of cinematic wordplay, this film really should be called ‘Fight On Flight’. Because this is a plot with a joyfully silly high-concept premise, which essentially allows for 90 minutes of brawling at 30,000 feet. The film begins, as if to emphasise this point, with a frantic montage of airborne violence: a meal trolley shoved into someone’s crotch, an Uzi disarmed by a dropkick, and a chainsaw merrily thrown into Economy class. And that’s in the first two minutes.
Then we flash back to 12 hours earlier. Some sort of shady quasi-governmental organisation is tracking a “blackhat terrorist” known only as The Ghost. He is, we’re told in mile-a-minute exposition, an über-hacker, who has crashed the Gdp of multiple countries and “destroyed Yemen’s oil reserves”. This mysterious organisation tracking The Ghost — whose true nature is only revealed late...

Here’s the synopsis: “Walker (Tom Hardy) is a bruised detective fighting his way through the criminal underworld threatening to engulf his entire city. In the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, Walker finds himself with a number of factions on his tail; a vengeful crime syndicate, a crooked politician, as well as his fellow cops. It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had a movie from action filmmaker Gareth Evans, who gave us two bone-breaking installments in “The Raid” saga and is reuniting with Netflix for his latest effort “Havoc” after working with them on the 2018 gothic folk horror film, “Apostle.” There is now a first-look trailer for the film that stars British actor Tom Hardy (“The Bikeriders”) in his role as Walker, a disillusioned detective who has to wade into the waters of the criminal drug underworld that lead to some unsettling and dangerous events.

Buckle up, everyone: Gareth Evans is back in action. Literally. After the gore-strewn one-two punch of The Raid and The Raid 2 – a duology which quite literally reshaped the action movie genre as we know it – the director moved on to gnarly folk horror (Apostle) and small-screen crime sagas (Gangs Of London Season 1). But with his long-awaited Havoc, he’s back in movie mode for the first time since 2017 – and plunging back into the all-out action with which he made his name. And this time, he has a mega A-list star leading the way in the shape of Tom Hardy. The results promise to be thrilling and bruising in equal measure – and the first teaser has arrived, offering a glimpse of the… well, havoc to come.
Boom. This is just a brief look for now, but the combination of Evans and Hardy seems to be as no-holds-barred as you’d hope.

Tom Hardy and "crime" are two movie tags that fit together perfectly. Across his increasingly impressive career, Hardy has starred in a multitude of crime dramas, including Peaky Blinders, Legend, Bronson, RocknRolla, and even Inception. One of his most recent crime flicks took Hardy back to the 1960s as the founder of an up-and-coming biker club in Chicago. That film is Jeff Nichols' The Bikeriders, and it's currently a massive hit on streaming,
At the time of writing, The Bikeriders is the most popular movie on Max this week. Alongside Hardy, the film also stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Mike Faist, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus, and was based on the real The Bikeriders photography book by Danny Lyon (who is played by Faist in the film). The Bikeriders followed the Vandals (based on the real Outlaws Motorcycle Club) from their humble beginnings as a group of petrol heads to a full-on gang.

The following contains spoilers for Old Guy, debuting in select theaters and on digital Feb. 21, 2025.
There's an inherent charm to action movies that makes even a premise done dozens of times stand out. Die Hard and The Raid both follow one police officer trapped in a location with numerous enemies. However, the former is far more charismatic. The same could be said for the hitman subgenre and Old Guy. The movie stars Christoph Waltz as the aging killer Danny Dolinski, who trains a skilled but reckless protegé named Whilborg (Cooper Hoffman). Working alongside his friend Anata (Lucy Liu), Danny finds there's more to life than killing, but not before fighting for his life.

Indonesian star Iko Uwais, beloved by international action aficionados for his brutal and balletic work in Gareth Evans’ The Raid: Redemption and later performances in the Expendables and Skyline franchises, is stepping behind the camera as a producer and director. In late January, the action hero unveiled his new namesake Jakarta-based production banner, Uwais Pictures. Has Hollywood reached peak AI paranoia? This awards season, before Karla Sofía Gascón’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) about George Floyd and Islam became the focus of consternation, the Oscar uproar was centered on the use of artificial intelligence in the tweaking of voice performances in Emilia Pérez — for Gascón’s singing — and in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, to improve the pronunciation of Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones’ Hungarian-language dialog.
The virulence of the backlash against such minor and technical applications of AI — used, in both cases, with the full participation and approval of the artists involved — illustrates the widespread perception, inside the film industry and among the general public, that AI is a threat to jobs and to artistic integrity. An AI zero-tolerance policy has become fashionable for celebrities, with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Glenn Close and Hank Azaria raising the alarm. Distributors have taken...

When The Accountant hit theatres in 2016, most expected it to be just another action thriller, but what set the movie apart was the protagonist and the combat sequences. Christian Wolf, played by Ben Affleck, is portrayed as a high-functioning autistic accountant who works for a criminal organization while moonlighting as a lethal enforcer. Adding to the film’s appeal was Jon Bernthal who essayed Brax, Wolff’s estranged brother.

Timo Tjahjanto, the director behind one of the biggest and best action movie hits on Netflix last year, The Shadow Strays, will reportedly reunite with action icon and The Night Comes for Us star Iko Uwais for the perfect new project. According to a now suspiciously removed report from THR, Tjahjanto and The Raid’s Iko Uwais will reunite for an adaptation of the neo-noir cyberpunk RPG Neon Blood, with the pitch for the movie promising “a bone-crunching kick to the face.” For action fans, this kick can’t land quickly enough.

Big names, high concepts, and crowd-pleasing thrills are the order of the day at this year’s European Film Market, where commercial fare is dominating over the usual arthouse prestige plays, reflecting an industry uncertain of the future of the theatrical business in the post-covid world. Action, horror, and comedy are leading the charge, with star-driven projects like Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike), Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (Rose Byrne, Conan O’Brien, A$AP Rocky), and Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller (Samuel L. Great action movies come to those who wait, and our patience has finally paid off as, after four years, Tom Hardy and The Raid director Gareth Evans’ Netflix thriller Havoc is all set to land on the streamer later this year. Recent rumors claimed that the action outing would be a lengthy 2 hours and 30 minutes long. However, during yesterday’s “Next on Netflix” event, Evans revealed the real runtime. And while it's considerably shorter, this may, in fact, be a good thing.
Responding to the rumors, the filmmaker revealed that, rather than a sprawling action epic, Havoc will instead be a much tighter, fast-paced fist to the face, and clocks in at “a tight as a drum” 1 hour and 45 minutes. Which, rather than spending time on a lot of chatter, should mean that Hardy and Evans will hit the ground running when Havoc lands on Netflix in the spring. Check...

We have now reached year four of waiting for Tom Hardy to join forces with the director behind The Raid, Gareth Evans, for the Netflix action movie Havoc. But this latest update certainly suggests that it will have been worth the wait. While we have known the plot and the cast for some time, action fans have had to wait patiently for any other information or updates, with this new insight potentially revealing the long-awaited thriller’s epic runtime.
According to World of Reel, various outlets, including IMDb Pro, now have Havoc listed with a runtime of 2 hours 30 minutes, matching Evans’ 2014 martial arts epic The Raid 2. If this is accurate, it should give Hardy and Evans plenty of time to deliver what promises to be a modern classic of the genre as the Oscar-nominee and Venom star takes to the streets as a “bruised detective” who finds himself entering...

The Raid star Iko Uwais is moving up from action star to director, as well as from director to studio head in one swift movement (not unlike his martial arts moves). The Indonesian martial arts star, whose style is a form called Silat, was recently seen in films like Expend4bles and will be in the upcoming Skyline: Warpath, with fellow action star Scott Adkins. Additionally, Uwais can be seen in the sci-fi thriller Ash, which stars Eiza Gonzalez and Aaron Paul, and it is due to release in March for a short theatrical release before streaming on Shudder.
Deadline has now reported that Uwais is unveiling the start of his own production company — Uwais Pictures. The launch of his production company will be emphasizing action films for its slate and the studio is already hitting the ground running with two movies ready for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.
