Inside Llewyn Davis

13 Films to See in September
Image
If one peruses our 50-title fall movie preview, there shouldn’t be too many surprises for narrowing down what to see in September. But with our most-anticipated film of the entire year arriving this month, along with some early autumn gems, there’s much to look forward to.

13. Plainclothes (Carmen Emmi; Sept. 19)

Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival (where it picked up the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for its ensemble) Carmen Emmi’s feature debut Plainclothes stars Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey in a story of an undercover officer in 1990s Syracuse who lures and arrests gay men, then ends up falling for a target.

Industry Love for Guillermo del Toro Could Carry ‘Frankenstein’ in the Oscar Race
Image
People love Guillermo del Toro, and that’s not hyperbole.

Hollywood’s affection for the Oscar-winning auteur goes far beyond mere admiration. The Mexican filmmaker, who won best picture and director for “The Shape of Water” in 2017, has become one of the industry’s most beloved figures. His presence in any Oscar race is never just about the work he presents on screen — it’s about the depth of trust and loyalty he inspires in colleagues, craftspeople and actors alike. That goodwill may be key to propelling his latest opus, “Frankenstein,” into this year’s Oscar conversation.

After debuting at Venice, the gothic horror film adapted from Mary Shelley’s classic novel held two surprise screenings at the Telluride Film Festival on Sunday night. The 9:30 p.m. showing at the Werner Herzog Theatre and 10 p.m. screening at the Palm — the festival’s two largest venues — both sold out,...

Caught Stealing Review: Darren Aronofsky Blends a Zany Caper with His Customary Brutality
Image
Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was born and bred San Francisco Giants baseball. Named after one of the most significant Giants in major league history––back when they were the New York Giants, a clever nod from writer Charlie Huston, who adapted his own novel for the screen––high school Hank leaned into his legacy with enough bravado to go pro, a surefire first round pick. But a leg-splitting car crash brought his athletic career to a screeching, permanent halt.

Now, as a sensually disheveled 20- or 30-something drunk, he doesn’t let life in New York hamper his daily devotion to the game, even if his connection to it still...

Ethan Coen explains why he and Joel are “out of sync”
La Ballade de Buster Scruggs (2018)
The Coen Brothers haven’t directed a movie since 2018. Sure, Joel and Ethan have helmed projects separately, but at this point, this is the longest they’ve ever gone without teaming up. So what’s going on between the fellas?

Ethan recently chatted with Collider, where the topic of his and Joel’s movies were brought up. As he put it, it was a combination of burnout and being busy. “After the last movie we made together, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, I was like, ‘I can’t do another one. This is too hard. I’m out.’ And Joel went on to do Macbeth. And then Covid happened, and...

An Upcoming Oscar Season With No Kings: Why the Awards Race Has No Ruler
Image
Nine months into 2025, the machinery of Oscar campaigning has reached peak operational velocity. But beneath the familiar choreography lies something unprecedented: genuine uncertainty about who will emerge victorious.

The Academy has lit the first torch of awards season with the release of its initial wave of digital screeners. Seven modest offerings have been uploaded to its portal: “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight,” “Hello Beautiful,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “KPop Demon Hunters,” “The Luckiest Man in America” and “The Ugly Stepsister.” These appetizers now populate the Academy Screening Room for more than 11,000 voting members — the first course in a sprawling feast of hundreds more titles set to drop weekly leading up to the 98th Academy Awards.

Yet this season, and also hinted by the past few years of Oscar predicting, we’re witnessing nothing less than the collapse of Hollywood’s established hierarchy.

For the first time in recent memory,...

Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac on Netflix’s $120 Million ‘Frankenstein’ Gamble: 10 Hours in Makeup, a Misunderstood Monster and Why It’s Not a Horror Movie
Image
Jacob Elordi is unrecognizable in “Frankenstein.” He’s not the high school jock who struts the halls of “Euphoria” High, the college boy worth killing for in “Saltburn,” the taller-than-life rock star from “Priscilla.” In Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of the classic horror novel, Elordi is a creature locked in a deadly feud with his maker, Victor Frankenstein (played by Oscar Isaac).

To get into character, Elordi spent up to 10 hours in the makeup chair before shooting on the film’s sprawling sets in Toronto and Scotland. “There’s so many different layers to the costume,” Elordi says of playing the enigmatic monster with translucent skin. “When he’s born, he’s wearing nearly nothing. His chest is open and his head is high. Then, as he starts to experience pain, as we do as a teenager, he starts to hunch his shoulders. And as an adult, he closes off.

Frankenstein: Guillermo del Toro's Horror Remake Gets Two New Posters, Sets Theatrical/Netflix Release Dates
Image
With Frankenstein, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pinocchio) adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

As we first reported on FearHQ.com, two new posters have just been released, featuring Oscar Isaac's (Moon Knight) Victor Frankenstein and his monstrous creation, played by Jacob Elordi (Saltburn).

Those are accompanied by long-awaited release date news. Frankenstein will arrive in select theaters on October 17, with a Netflix debut now confirmed for November 7. Why is a streaming movie heading to the big screen?

Well, this should help put the movie into Oscar contention, similar to Pinocchio, which had a month-long run in theaters before its streaming debut.

Discussing his approach to playing Frankenstein's monster in a recent interview, Elordi explained that...

Frankenstein Release Date and Teaser Art Unveiled
Image
Netflix has set the Frankenstein release date and unveiled two new pieces of teaser art. From Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, Frankenstein will open in select theaters on Friday, October 17, and will then begin streaming on Netflix on Friday, November 7.

Del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

The writer-director is fulfilling a lifelong dream: making his own adaptation of Mary Shelley’s beloved Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.

At the center of the film are Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth.

Joining that main trio are Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), with Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz.

The film is an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel,...

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor Form Delicate Love in First Trailer for The History of Sound
Image
Following up his Akira Kurosawa remake Living, Oliver Hermanus brought his queer drama The History of Sound, starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, to Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. With a September 12 release date now set from Mubi, they have unveiled the first trailer and poster.

Here’s the synopsis: “In 1917, Lionel—a young, talented music student—meets David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness.”

Luke Hicks said in his Cannes review, “It’s strange to hear backwood Appalachian fiddle folk in a French theater at the hand of a South African director portraying the queer,...

John Goodman picks The Big Lebowski as the film he’s most proud of…and he’s not over the line
John Goodman
With a career spanning four decades and well over a hundred roles, it might be hard to pick the greatest John Goodman performance. But when it comes down to it, Goodman isn’t out of his element when he cites The Big Lebowski as a strike.

When asked by The Hollywood Reporter if there was a film he was most proud of, Goodman said, “People seem to enjoy The Big Lebowski, and since everybody else likes it so much, I’ll take that. But anything I did for Joel and Ethan [Coen].” Prior to The Big Lebowski, Goodman worked with the Coens on Raising Arizona and Barton Fink – a film he has been open about wishing he could redo – and later on O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Inside Llewyn Davis.

Recalling first meeting the Coen Brothers a full decade before The Big Lebowski, Goodman said, “It was great because...

Forgotten $174 Million Sci-Fi Movie Starring Ex-Boy Band Singer Is Now A Hit On Streaming
Image
Justin Timberlake’s critically panned sci-fi In Timehas become a hit on streaming 14 years after it was released. While Timberlake first achieved success as a boy band star in the pop group Nsync, this best-selling singer has also carved out a second career as an acclaimed actor in movies like The Social Networkand Inside Llewyn Davis.

Despite grossing $174 million at the box office, In Time was criticized for not delivering on its clever premise of a society where time literally was money. However, audiences are now rediscovering this film and giving it a new lease of life as they tune in to watch Timberlake alongside stars such as Cillian Murphy and Olivia Wilde.

In Time Has Entered HBO’s Top Ten This 2011 Sci-Fi Has Found Renewed Success On Streaming

Coming from Gattaca writer and director Andrew Niccol, In Time was set in a world where one’s lifespan acted as currency,...

Could ‘Sinners’ campaign as a musical at the Golden Globes? The surprising answer
Image
As discussed in Gold Derby's 2025 Oscars halftime report, Sinners is sitting pretty with just under six months to go for the rest of the year. Of the films that have had theatrical releases thus far this calendar year, it's the easy frontrunner for Best Picture, and it's cultural footprint is about to become even larger as it heads to Max on July 4.

At this point, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller will be a contender in year-end awards.

But which year-end awards?

There is an interesting possibility for Sinners when it comes specifically to its placement for the Golden Globes, which divides up the major film categories between drama and musical or comedy. Music, the blues and Irish folk in particular, is an essential element of the film — both in the lives of its characters and in the texture of the film itself...

The Director With the Most Movies After Nolan in ‘Best Films of the 21st Century’ Hasn’t Won a Single Oscar
Image
What if we told you that one of the greatest filmmakers of our time, with not one, not two, but four films on The New York Times’ list of the “Best Films of the 21st Century,” has never won an Oscar? Sounds wild, right? Welcome to the bittersweet world of Paul Thomas Anderson—cinema’s ultimate underdog genius. While Christopher Nolan rightfully takes the crown with five epic entries and an Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Anderson is right behind him, quietly owning the list with his four iconic works.

From classics like There Will Be Blood, and the hauntingly beautiful Phantom Thread, four of Paul Thomas Anderson’s projects made it into the list, and yet the director got snubbed at every Oscar season. Even Daniel Day-Lewis won an Academy Award for There Will Be Blood, but Anderson was left clapping in the audience, empty-handed. Perhaps the Academy just isn...

Bryan Cranston on Returning to the ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Reboot: ‘I’m, Of Course, Naked Again’
Image
Bryan Cranston isn’t slowing down any time soon, most recently reuniting with Wes Anderson for “The Phoenician Scheme,” their latest collaboration following “Asteroid City” in 2023 and “Isle of Dogs” in 2018. In Anderson’s latest, he plays Reagan, the brother of Tom Hanks’ character. We caught up with the actor at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, May 28.

Amid his busy schedule, he will soon return to the “Malcolm in the Middle” reboot, reuniting with original cast members Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield. “Seeing the family was the best part,” he told IndieWire about returning to the series, which ran for 151 episodes across seven seasons from 2000 to 2006.

“It’s been 20 years since we said goodbye, and now we’re seeing the family again and each person,” he said. “All the boys were around the same age, now, that I was when I started 25 years ago.

Ethan Coen’s ‘Honey Don’t!’ Gets 6.5-Minute Ovation In Cannes
Image
Focus Features had the final slot of the Official Selection here in Cannes this evening with Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t!, a dark comedy reuniting Margaret Qualley with the filmmaker on the heels of last year’s Drive-Away Dolls. Coen & Co. received a 6.5-minute ovation in the wee hours of the morning.

“Fun finish to the festival, yah?” said Coen to a lively crowd.

“It’s short for a movie that started after midnight,” added Coen about the movie’s 90-minute running time, “very humane!”

Qualley takes on the titular role of Honey O’Donahue, a small-town private investigator who delves into a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church led by a preacher played by Chris Evans.

Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Day also feature prominently in the cast, which additionally includes Billy Eichner, Lera Abova, Jacnier, Gabby Beans, Talia Ryder, Kristen Connolly, Lena Hall, Don Swayze,...

Cannes Review: The History of Sound is a Tenderly Felt Drama with Terence Davies-Style Musicality
Image
It’s strange to hear backwood Appalachian fiddle folk in a French theater at the hand of a South African director portraying the queer, song-collecting lives of two American men who are madly, delicately in love and played by British stars. Thanks to Paul Mescal, it’s also quite lovely.

The History of Sound––Oliver Hermanus’ hushed ode to New England’s rich tapestry of folk history, adapted by Ben Shattuck from his short-story collection of the same name––is a tenderly felt drama sung in whisper and sorrow, the kind that almost guarantees a cry for anyone weakened by a phenomenal homegrown voice or piercing romance. Its alternately hyper-specific and vast range of vocals, styles, and tunes suggest the minor dawning of a lesser-known American sound.

Much as Inside Llewyn Davis and O Brother, Where Art Thou? sought to reintroduce music the Coens trusted would resonate with modern audiences,...

Carey Mulligan
Interview: Carey Mulligan, Tom Basden, Tim Key, and James Griffith Talk The Ballad of Wallis Island
Carey Mulligan
The Ballad of Wallis Island is exactly what I needed. Featuring wonderful performances from Carey Mulligan, Tom Basden, and Tim Key, the film is beautifully directed by James Griffiths. In it, Key plays Charles, a wealthy lottery winner who dreams of his favourite musical band McGwyer Mortimer (Basden and Mulligan), reuniting. And he has a crazy plan to help make it happen. Wallis Island is a love letter to the power of music. It is delightfully funny at times, heartbreaking at others, and the music is terrific. It’s a feature (reminiscent of John Carney’s work) that is most worthy of discovery.

After being utterly charmed by this Ballad, I had a wonderful time speaking to the cast and the film’s director. I’ve always appreciated the talents of Ms. Mulligan. And I especially enjoy when she takes on musical projects like Inside Llewyn Davis. Tom Basden and...

John Goodman is recovering after being injured during the production of an upcoming, untitled Alejandro González Iñárritu movie for Warner Bros. and Legendary, starring Tom Cruise.

The actor “experienced a hip injury,” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement.

“He received immediate medical attention that led to a brief delay in shooting to allow him time to recover,” the statement continues. “The production resumes shooting next week following John’s full recovery.”

The film was not shooting when Goodman was injured.

The untitled movie, the first to emerge from Cruise’s new deal with Warner Bros. and the first English-language feature from Iñárritu since Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Revenant nearly a decade ago, is set to hit theaters on Oct. 2, 2026, taking the release date originally occupied by the studio’s Batman sequel.

The film stars Cruise as the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a mission...

‘Blue Moon’ Review: Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater Luxuriate in Old Showbiz Drama
Image
Those with even the most cursory knowledge of musical theater would be familiar with the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein; those with similar familiarity with Rodgers and Hart, on the other hand, would be fewer and further in between. And from that simple statement of fact builds Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon,” a bittersweet biopic of sorts that premiered on Tuesday at the Berlin Film Festival. Pitched halfway between “Midnight in Paris” and “Inside Llewyn Davis,” Linklater’s proudly stagey old-showbiz hangout follows a man as he watches the world pass him by in real-time.

That man is lyricist Lorenz Hart — a titan of the American songbook whose influence can still be measured in show tunes and jazz standards, but whose name and reputation have receded further than his hairline in the eight decades since his death. And though “Blue Moon” opens with the drinking binge that directly resulted in Hart’s November 1943 passing,...

Chalamet’s Five-Year Journey to Portray Bob Dylan Pays Off with Oscar Nomination
Timothée Chalamet
After a five-year journey from initial announcement to final production, Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” has secured an Oscar nomination, transforming what once seemed like a troubled project into a critically acclaimed success.

The film, originally titled “Going Electric,” faced significant obstacles when the Covid-19 pandemic halted production in 2020. What initially appeared to be a setback ultimately became an opportunity for Chalamet to deeply immerse himself in the role of the legendary musician.

In a recent interview with W magazine, Chalamet revealed that the extended preparation time was unexpectedly beneficial. “I began to think the film was cursed,” he said, “but the five years it took to get the cast and movie together ended up being a good thing.”

The actor’s commitment to authenticity drove an intensive preparation process. He worked with a vocal coach daily and learned to play guitar, even practicing...

Timothée Chalamet Thought ‘A Complete Unknown’ Production Was ‘Cursed’: It Took ‘Five Years’ to Get Made
Image
Timothée Chalamet didn’t even know if “A Complete Unknown” would ever get made.

The actor, who is now Oscar-nominated for portraying Bob Dylan in the biopic, told W that he thought the film was “cursed” because of its production delays. The feature was originally titled “Going Electric,” and was adapted from Elijah Wald’s 2015 biography “Dylan Goes Electric.” Writer/director James Mangold announced the film in 2020 — a bad time to start production — and the feature was shelved amid the Covid-19 pandemic. It was released in 2024.

“Originally, I thought I had no time to prepare, but there were delays,” Chalamet said for W’s Directors Issue alongside his “Dune” auteur Denis Villeneuve and David Lynch’s original Paul Atreides, Kyle MacLachlan. “I began to think the film was cursed, but the five years it took to get the cast and movie finally together ended up being a good thing.”

Chalamet added of his prep,...

Billy Bob Thornton Was Damn Near-Perfect in This Retro Neo-Noir Gem From the Coen Brothers
Image
Joeland Ethan Coenare responsible for so many all-time great classics that it’s easy to take them for granted. While most cinephiles are familiar with the brutal neo-Western No Country For Old Men, the darkly comedic mystery Fargo, the cult classic The Big Lebowski, and the soulful music drama Inside Llewyn Davis, some of their best films have fallen under the radar, including The Man Who Wasn’t There. While not a direct remake, The Man Who Wasn’t There is an homage to the film noir movement of the 1940s, and shares many tonal and stylistic similarities with classics like Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce, and many thrillers directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Although the aesthetics alone make it worthy of a recommendation, The Man Who Wasn’t There ranks among the Coens’ best thanks to the amazing performance by Billy Bob Thornton.

Ryan Coogler Drew From Horror Classics And An Unlikely Coen Brothers Drama To Make Sinners
Image
Ryan Coogler is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. He's the rare writer/director who actually managed to make the jump from doing small independent movies to tackling massive blockbuster franchises without losing his style. Quite the contrary, in an era where the pipeline of Sundance darling to pawn in a superhero or big franchise machine has all but ruined the future of many a once-promising filmmaker, Coogler gave us not one but two exciting creative-driven properties.

First, he revitalized the "Rocky" franchise with the phenomenal "Creed," one of the best movies of the century and a nuanced and thrilling exploration of nature and nurture, with boxing thrown in for good measure. Coogler's legacy sequel approach worked wonders, kickstarting a trilogy, allowing Sylvester Stallone to do his best work in the franchise, and making Michael B. Jordan a star.

Next, Coogler went even bigger with "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Ryan Coogler's Sinners Was Heavily Inspired By An Underrated Twilight Zone Episode
Image
It's been 12 years since Ryan Coogler made his startlingly assured feature filmmaking debut with "Fruitvale Station," but he still feels like an unknown quantity as an artist. We know from "Creed" and "Black Panther" that he's got a knack for imbuing franchise movies with uncommon heart, and no shortage of swagger when it comes to staging dynamite action set pieces. But due to circumstances beyond his control (the death of Chadwick Boseman and the Covid-19 pandemic), he's only made one movie over the last seven years. That's a lot of time for a still-young filmmaker (he's 38) to sit on the sidelines, especially one whose oeuvre is curiously light on original movies.

That's not a knock on Coogler at all. Christopher Nolan directed a remake ("Insomnia") and three Batman movies en route to becoming the most prominent and praised studio filmmaker on the planet, so Coogler is in excellent company. But...

Watch the New Trailer for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, Starring Michael B. Jordan
Image
From Fruitvale Station to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ryan Coogler has established himself as one of the most vital voices in filmmaking over the past 12 years, and now he's stepping into the world of horror with his latest film, Sinners. Ahead of the movie's April 18th release in theaters, Warner Bros. revealed a new trailer for Sinners that sinks its teeth into visceral scares and unveils the vampiric side of its chilling and emotional story.

Daily Dead recently took part in a virtual Sinners trailer preview event with Ryan Coogler hosted by Juju Green. During the insightful conversation about Sinners, Coogler discussed how this film is especially a personal project for him:

My maternal grandfather is from Mississippi. And my uncle James, who passed away while I was finishing up Creed, was also from Mississippi. And it was a place I had never been. My maternal grandfather passed before I was born.

‘Zodiac Killer Project’ Review: A Frustrated Filmmaker Takes Aim at the Industry’s True-Crime Addiction
Image
It’s worth mourning the films we’ll never get to see: the unfunded epics, the unmarketable art films, perhaps even the unengaging streaming product. Filmmaker Charlie Shackleton faced that grief when his thoroughly researched project, a documentary on the Zodiac killer case, got the plug pulled after years in development. But the director’s vision was simply too comprehensive for the project to go unrealized. In the comically plainly titled “Zodiac Killer Project,” Shackleton explains how his film would’ve unfolded, speaking in a consolation-prize confessional.

The candid narrator, who is also a published film critic, emerges with more than just his regrets. The doc is also a playful evaluation of the true-crime content bubble and the genre’s full capitulation to copycatting itself.

Though Shackleton’s feature can’t legally cite its source material as the 2012 book “The Zodiac Killer Cover-up: The Silent Badge,” it is all but an official adaptation.

Carey Mulligan ‘Just Started’ Filming ‘Beef’ Season 2 and Says ‘Almost Everything’ Is Different, Says She Won’t Appear in Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’
Image
Carey Mulligan revealed at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance that she “just started” filming the second season of Netflix’s series “Beef.” The first season won Emmys for leading stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, so anticipation is high for the new episodes. The show’s second season will feature a new storyline and an entirely new cast, headlined by Mulligan, Oscar Isaac (with whom she starred in the Coen Bros.’ “Inside LLewyn Davis”), Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny.

“We just started. Almost everything [is different],” Mulligan told Variety’s Tatiana Siegel when asked about the new season. “But it’s still [creator Lee Sung Jin] being brilliant. It’s a completely new story and if I say anything else then a laser beam will appear on my head. But it’s very exciting.”

Another project Mulligan can’t talk about is Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights,” starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

Adam Driver’s Sci-Fi Thriller Getting New Streaming Home Nearly 2 Years After $60M Disappointment
Image
As much as Adam Driver's career has reached some impressive highs, it has been met with some notable lows. On the one hand, Driver has been a part of some major moneymakers over the past decade. All three of his Star Wars movies made over $1 billion, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens making just shy of $2.1 billion. On the other hand, however, Driver has played roles in films that have lost boatloads of money. Most infamously, he played the lead in Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, which made a mere $13.8 million on an $120 million budget.

The same disparity applies to the critical reception of Driver's films as well. The actor has been a part of indie darlings like Frances Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis that have earned Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores of over 90%. His work has been praised in similarly high-scoring movies like Paterson and Marriage Story. On the other hand,...

Who Was Suze Rotolo, the Inspiration for Elle Fanning’s Character in ‘A Complete Unknown’?
Image
You probably don’t know her name, but you definitely know her face — bright and beaming, covered in chestnut hair, a few feet away from a blue Volkswagen bus. She’s wearing a green loden coat she just bought on a eight-month trip to Italy, a perfect match for the black leather boots on her feet, trudging through the slushy snow of New York’s Greenwich Village. She’s clutching the arm of Bob Dylan, whose hands are keeping warm in his denim pockets. His brown suede coat is absolutely...

The Coen Brothers Made One Of The Best Gangster Movies In History - Why Is It Often Forgotten?
Image
Miller's Crossing, one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, is an extremely underrated movie created by The Coen Brothers. As one of the best directing duos of all time, The Coen Brothers have directed classic films such as The Big Lebowski, Inside Llewyn Davis, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men. Joel and Ethan Coen have directed a total of 20 films together beginning with the 1984 neo-noir crime film Blood Simple.

Following their feature film debut, the Coen Brothers' sophomore effort was the 1987 crime comedy Raising Arizona, which remains one of Nicolas Cage's most iconic roles. They then went on to direct the showbiz comedy Barton Fink, the satirical comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the black comedy Burn After Reading, and the instant classic Western True Grit. The Coen Brothers' last joint effort was 2018's The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Adam Driver Sci-Fi Movie With 36% Rt Score Is Leaving Netflix Very Soon
Image
Adam Driver has had an idiosyncratic career. He is simultaneously a beloved independent film actor who has also taken on controversial mainstream roles. Perhaps his most ire-inspiring role was playing Kylo Ren in the newer Star Wars movie, whose last installment, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, dismayed many fans. At the same time, however, Driver is a scene-stealer in movies like Inside Llewyn Davis and Frances Ha, which came out before his foray into a galaxy far, far away.

Driver's films have also gained notoriety in meme culture, and this year is no exception. The actor led the ensemble of Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, a dystopian sci-fi fantasy romp that was met with divisive responses. While some critics appreciated his performance, lines from the film, especially his delivery of "go back to the club." Before Megalopolis, Driver's Marriage Story character was among his most-memed works outside of Star Wars,...

Interview: Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro Talk A Complete Unknown
Bob Dylan
Growing up, it was impossible not to hear Bob Dylan’s music. ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,’ ‘ Hurricane,’ and ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ all had an incredible influence for decades. And this year, James Mangold, who brought Johnny Cash to life with Walk the Line, now sets his sights on Dylan with A Complete Unknown (read our review). The film stars Timothee Chalamet as Dylan in a fantastic performance. The rest of the cast shines brightly as well. You have Edward Norton as Pete Seegar, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, and the terrific Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash. Considering all the actors do their own singing, it’s nice to see the care that went into exploring this legendary musician’s life.

I’ve never spoken to Edward Norton, but I’ve been a fan of his work. From Primal Fear to Fight Club,...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Asks the Question: Why Do We Keep Returning to Greenwich Village?
Image
At the start of James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, a young, determined-looking Bob Dylan (played by Timothée Chalamet) arrives in the Greenwich Village of 1961. He’s immediately thrust into an urban jumble of coffeehouses, bars, zigzagging streets, and tiny city apartments, even if New Jersey locales stood in for the Village.

If any of it looks or feels cinematically familiar, it should, since the worlds of movies and TV have been making return visits to that neighborhood and era for over a decade. You could start with Inside Llewyn Davis,...
