Seth Rogen has recently achieved deserved success for his hyperstylistic new satire The Studio, which some may view as an "elevated" comedy compared to the grass and sass of his earlier work, a delightful cinema of bud and buds including Superbad, This Is the End, and Pineapple Express. If you think The Studio is different for Rogen, then you might be gobsmacked by Taking Care, a short film by the great James Keach which features Rogen but mainly spotlights his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen, and the couple's personal and professional relationship with Alzheimer's. Seth and Lauren met in their 20s, and it wasn't long before Lauren's mother, a beloved teacher named Adele Miller, developed younger-onset Alzheimer's disease at age 55. Adele would lose most of her independence within the next five years.

Campbell and Wayne in True Grit.
Glen Campbell, one of the most popular voices in the history of country western music, has passed away at age 81. Since 2011 he had waged a valiant battle against Alzheimer's disease. He continued to perform even as the ailment took a toll on him physically and mentally. His experience was chronicled in the acclaimed 2014 documentary "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me". Campbell hit his stride in the 1960s and became a popular country "crossover" artist who appealed to audiences that generally didn't patronize country western music. He sold 45 million records over the course of his career. The telegenic, squeaky-clean, nice guy image served Campbell well. He appealed to both young fans and older audiences and had a popular TV variety series, "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" that ran between 1969-1972. Campbell's acting debut was a promising one. He co-starred opposite John Wayne in the Duke's 1969 Oscar-winning...

CNN Films has acquired director Sharon Liese's "The Gnomist" out of the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. The short film, which follows three women on a journey deep into the woods of Overland Park, is expected to premiere this Fall. Produced by Liese and Oscar winner Cynthia Wade and shot by Ty Jones, the film takes us to Firefly Forest, where fairy dwellings fit in the hollows of trees began mysteriously popping up in Spring 2013. For these three former strangers, the suburban Kansas forest takes on a psychic healing power. CNN launched its inaugural online short film series in March as part of its aggressive push into the realm of original video content. Additional films for the Fall series will include shorts from Andrew Jenks and Roger Ross Williams. CNN Films recently released the campus rape doc "The Hunting Ground" and will launch the Oscar-nominated "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me" later this year.

The Oscars aren't until next Sunday, but the race will be all over by Tuesday. The 17th is the day ballots are due; after that, it's all in the hands of the number-crunchers at Pricewaterhouse Cooper. Still, there were a lot of last-minute awards given out over the weekend by several of the professional groups -- writers, cinematographers, sound editors, sound mixers, and makeup artists and hairstylists -- whose members will also be turning in their Oscar ballots this week. Their decisions should help you, not only to determine who'll win the prizes in the more obscure corners of your Oscar pool ballot, but also which movies have broad enough support to win the more coveted prizes.
What did we learn from this weekend's guild awards?

Kate Bosworth, Kristen Stewart and Hunter Parrish play her children, who all weather the storm in their own way. Alec Baldwin, as her husband, wants to flee and stay, he fell in love with her mind and can't bear to see it go.
Julianne Moore as Alice: "Alice is terrified of her deterioration but tries to act as normal as possible. She is spinning a lot of plates."

Birdman was lauded with seven gongs at this year's Critics' Choice Movie Awards.
Lead actor Michael Keaton scored two of the awards for Actor and Actor in a Comedy, while the movie also won in the Acting Ensemble, Score, Original Screenplay, Editing and Cinematography categories.
However, the Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed black comedy was unable to beat Boyhood to the Picture award.
The coming-of-age drama had the second highest number of awards in total, which included Director for Richard Linklater, Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette and Young Actor/Actress for Ellar Coltrane.
The Grand Budapest Hotel followed suit with three awards for Comedy, Art Direction and Costume Design, while Guardians of the Galaxy took two with Action Movie and Hair & Make-up.

Birdman led the field heading into tonight's 2015 Critics Choice Awards with 13 total nominations followed by The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations, and Boyhood with eight. Of course, following this morning's 2015 Oscar nominations all eyes were on the Critics Choice Awards to see how this awards season will continue to flow. Some were already declaring the Oscars irrelevant, bypassed by the likes of the more diverse list of nominees at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards as the Oscars failed to nominate Selma and saw a list of acting nominees dominated by all-white actors. Personally, I think people are looking to blame the Academy for overall industry ills, but I guess there is some level of importance to be placed on being the organization to move the dial. Is that by nominations alonec How much do winners matterc That's probably a question best left for another time, as for tonight's awards.

Well, there we went. The Oscar nominations are in and, in a nice change of pace, the crafts categories were revealed on the air. Let's see what the last several months of build-up has left for us. A few trends come to mind… The (Near) Shut-Outs Oh how the mighty have fallen. A measly sound editing nomination for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" shows that the novelty eventually does wear off. Goose eggs for "Noah" (despite a strong push), "Nightcrawler" (given its precursor run), "Gone Girl" (you would have thought it had great chances in film editing and original score), "Transformers: Age of Extinction" (given the sound branch's love of this series) and "Big Eyes" (given the pedigree) have also got to be considered disappointing. And even though it garnered two nominations, I can't imagine that there aren't some long faces regarding "Guardians of the Galaxy," with...

With the Mpse's nominations logged and official, all of the guilds and industry groups have had their say in the nominees stage of the season, culminating with tomorrow's Oscar nominations. Leading the way with mentions from 11 separate groups each — and boy this must make Fox Searchlight happy — is "Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Just behind with 10 is "The Imitation Game." What's interesting is what's just under that level. You have both "Gone Girl" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" chalking up eight groups. The former may or may not end up in the Best Picture category tomorrow (nothing would surprise me), but the latter sure did come on strong for its elements. After that, "American Sniper" has seven, "Boyhood," "Nightcrawler," "Interstellar," "Into the Woods," "The Theory of Everything" and "Unbroken" each have six and Sony Classics' hopefuls "Foxcatcher" and "Whiplash" ring in with five. That pretty much covers the landscape,...

The final guild/industry group to declare nominees did so this afternoon as the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) spoke up with a roll call of players for the 62nd Golden Reel Awards. On the film side of things, "Birdman" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had the best showing with three nominations each. I've been wondering if the latter could slide into Oscar play this year, but it's hard to gauge here, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had a nice Mpse showing, too. In the effects/foley category, "Fury" is featured as well, also a strong possibility to pop up. All other expected players ("American Sniper," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Unbroken," etc.) are featured. We'll see how the sound branch shakes it all out tomorrow but I'm a little more confused by where they'll end up going than usual, I must say. Check out...

The Georgia Film Critics Association has more or less kept to the standard flow today with a list of nominations led by critical darlings "Birdman," "Boyhood," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Selma." Each film picked up seven nods, though "Selma" also figured into collective nods for two breakthrough nominees so you'd be on solid turf to say it was out in front. Check out the full list of nominees below. Winners will be announced on Jan. 9. Check out the rest of the madness at The Circuit. The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

If you were looking for things to be shaken up a little bit in this year's Oscar race, the American Cinema Editors (Ace) offered a slight jolt Friday with the organization's 65th annual list of nominees for film editing. And if you were wondering if "Nightcrawler" might make a serious play on the circuit, well… I will say I was wondering that. So much so that I had a piece prepped focusing on its potential before today's announcement, which included the film in a dramatic feature category that featured a tie for the first time ever. (The animated field saw a tie yielding four nominees in 2012, while "Babel" and "The Departed" actually tied for the dramatic win in 2006, but there hasn't been a tie leading to an extra nominee in the dramatic or comedy/musical categories before.) Powerhouse Oscar players "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" unsurprisingly joined the party, and ditto Sundance hit "Whiplash.

The Houston Film Critics Society has announced nominations, and no surprise, the three-horse race for critical darling of the year led the way: "Birdman" with 10, "Boyhood" with seven and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" with six. Birdman is clearly a favorite this awards season, at least when it comes to nominations as it once again tops a list of nominees, this time the 2015 Critics Choice Awards as it leads the field with 13 total nominations followed by The Grand Budapest Hotel, which continues to surge this awards season with 11 nominations, and Boyhood with eight. Full disclosure, I'm part of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca), which nominates and votes on these awards, but I'm a little nervous my nominees this year weren't counted as I mistakenly missed the deadline by a few hours thinking it was on Saturday, not Friday. Oops, though looking at these nominations it doesn't seem as if it would have mattered. For example, I don't see Locke anywhere, Carrie Coon (Gone Girl) didn't get a supporting actress nomination, A Most Wanted Man didn't get an adapted screenplay nomination, no nomination for The Raid 2 in Best Action Movie,...

It was not my intention to confuse anyone. When I published my Top Ten of 2014 yesterday, that was timed around a larger slate of other Top Ten stuff being published here, and it was timed around the delivery from the video team, and when it ran, I realized that it was going to be very odd to skip from #21, published in this piece, to the top ten, but it was also unavoidable. The truth is that, as with most years, I would have been just as happy with these ten movies as my picks for best of the year, and I am just as fond of everything on this list as I am of the films that made the top ten. Because, seriously, you don't really just have ten movies that sum up a year. For me, there are so many films that will be a huge part of 2014 for...

"Nightcrawler" led the way with nominations from the SoCal group, picking up nine tips of the hat including for Riz Ahmed in Best Supporting Actor, which is neat. Nearly all of this year's Grammy nominees have been announced, with album of the year contenders still to be unveiled tonight. Looking at the nominees for visual media — i.e. film and TV stuff — we have a mix of Oscar nominees and winners from last year and potential contenders for this year. Let's take a look… At the top, big ups to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their "Gone Girl" score landing a nomination. It might be the best score of the year, in my opinion, and I'm crossing my fingers that the Academy's music branch is as cool as they were in 2010 for nominating "The Social Network." Also in there is "The Grand Budapest Hotel," one of a few scores from Alexandre Desplat in Oscar contention this season ("The Imitation Game" and "Unbroken" will be eligible for Grammys next year). Last year's Best Original Score Oscar winner Steven Price was nominated for "Gravity,...

Tanya Tucker was like the Taylor Swift or LeAnn Rimes of her time.
A country superstar when she was just 13 years old, her career – and her love life -- suffered many ups and downs. After her first hit record "Delta Dawn" hit the airwaves in 1972, Tucker went on to record a streak of Top 10 hits, including "Love's the Answer," "What's Your Mama's Name," "Blood Red and Goin' Down" and "Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)." After getting diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2011, Glen Campbell embarked on a tour with more than 150 dates, performing to packed stadiums across the country. In a new documentary, Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me (out Nov. 14), fans of the country legend, 78, will get a look at what went on behind the scenes as the performer's mind degenerated. "I'm really proud of him … to be so courageous, to open up and be vulnerable before the whole world," the singer's wife Kim Woolen, 56, told People at the premiere Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Any film about superstar entertainer Glen Campbell would, by its very nature, tend to be extraordinary. But Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me, a film exploring the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease, which affects some five million Americans over the age of 65, including the 78-year-old singer, could have been a much trickier proposition. By putting the project in the capable hands of producer James Keach (who also produced the Oscar-winning 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line), however, Campbell's family has ensured that the conversation about the debilitating disease will continue and will,...

That's true even if Campbell himself forgets who he is. In 2011, well over 70, the Rhinestone Cowboy announced his imminent retirement — and that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. But he kept on keeping on for 115 concerts after that, reading lyrics off a teleprompter: He may not recall the words, but he still knows his way around the melodies he's spent a life inside. At one point, he reads aloud words from the prompter telling him to lay down a guitar solo — then, figu...
