    Summary

Reviewers say 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' is praised for its nostalgic elements, visual style, and Michael Keaton's performance. The gothic aesthetic, practical effects, and blend of horror and comedy are highlighted. However, criticisms include a convoluted plot, underdeveloped characters, and reliance on callbacks to the original film. Despite these issues, the film is seen as a fun, if uneven, addition to the franchise.

    Bit of a mixed bag

I don't like giving bad reviews for films, and mine kinda isn't. BUT...it isn't very funny so feels like a step down from the original. The best storyline isn't really developed (at the expense of a tired rehash from the original cast). There's a few Easter eggs for fans of the first film but it doesn't feel like enough. They've toned down some of the weird stuff from the first film that's no longer acceptable, without really addressing it, which leaves it all hanging a bit. Look, it's still quite fun, but probably not worth paying for a trip to the cinema. Overall I left feeling that I was glad a film was only about an hour and a half.

    Disappointed

Beetlejuice, specifically Beetlejuice, and maybe Bob, were the only decent things about this sequel. The original Beetlejuice is legendary, and I'm going to pretend this one doesn't exist because, seriously, come on. 🤔 The sequel just didn't capture the magic of the original. The charm, wit, and unique style that made the first movie a classic were missing. It felt like a cash grab rather than a genuine attempt to continue the story. Fans of the original will likely be disappointed. It's a shame because there was so much potential. Hopefully, future projects will do better justice to the legacy of Beetlejuice.

Yet another long-awaited sequel that didn't need to be made

I really didn't enjoy this movie. There wasn't enough of Beetlejuice, the human side of the drama was drab. I didn't feel connected to the new characters. The charm of the first one was Beetlejuice tormenting the Dietz family. There really wasn't enough of that in this movie. Overall, I think I'm very generous with the 6 out of 10 rating I could have gone lower. No real major complaints regarding the acting but it just didn't have that magic of the first film. Just was unable to capture that essence of it. If you haven't seen it yet, definitely something you can wait for it to come to streaming.

    Disappointed in the movie.

The wife and I were disappointed today when we watched the movie. It appeared that the writers were trying to be funny at times however they were just silly. One scene towards the end just kept going and going until it became boring and monotonous. The story line was average at best. The acting was good however the script was as predictable as stale beer. Instead of 1:45 run time they could have cut 20 minutes out of the movie and it would have had no impact on the story at all. The best character in the opinion of my wife and myself was "Bob", the shrunken head character from the original movie.

Visually faithful, but crowded storyline dampens enjoyment

Like many other GenXers who was a goth in highschool, the original Beetlejuice was (and still is) among one of my favorite films, and I had high hopes for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Visually and aesthetically, I was not disappointed; the film captured the blue-filtered, twisted atmosphere of the original afterlife effortlessly, including character design, and it was nice to see some claymation and good practical effects again. The writers did their best at making an excuse for Jeffrey Jones not to appear, I think the best they could given the circumstances, but given that he was a key character in the original it felt odd how much they kept the character at arms' length during the film. My main misgiving, however, was the sardine-can storyline. There were far too many side stories happening at once throughout the course of the film, making the new characters who were introduced feel superficial and consequently unrelatable and even forgettable to the audience. Shoehorned in was significantly more song and dance than the original, which make the film feel almost more like a macabre variety show than a story to sit and watch, unlike the original where there were outbursts of noise and activity but needed pockets of silence, melancholy and creepiness. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was missing these bits of reprieve, instead being a constant merry-go-round of noise and activity. Although there was a good bit of throwback references and fan service, this film just felt like it was trying to be everything to everyone at once, and as a result misses the charm and tone of the original. In summation, it has the look but is missing the heart.

Tim Burton has said that this film would only be made if Michael Keaton would return to reprise his role. Keaton said in March of 2014 that this is the only sequel he's interested in doing.
    • Goofs
Lydia's husband is working as a civil servant in the afterlife, which means he must have committed suicide, a rule established in the previous film. However, dialogue in two separate scenes makes it clear that his death was accidental.

The newspaper in the movie states that the authorities in charge often mistake non suicide deaths for suicide, that might be why he is now a civil servant. Also, the audience doesn't know fully how he died and it's possible he went into a situation where death was highly likely aka a suicide mission.

Richard: [he, Lydia and Astrid see Jeremy at the Immigration kiosk] Don't stamp that passport!

      [the passport gets stamped]

Jeremy: [sees them, smiles triumphantly] You're too late, man.

Beetlejuice: [revealed as the official] I think it was Dostoevsky who said...

[Jeremy sees that his passport reads Shit Out of Luck underneath his photo]

      Beetlejuice: ... Later, fucker!

[without warning, Beetlejuice pulls the lever, Jeremy falls down the trapdoor and screams violently in the burning flames of hell]

      Beetlejuice: Ha, ha! Next!
