Elton John: Never Too Late

Doc Helmers on the Diverse Ways to Get at the Heat of the Story at the Variety and Rolling Stone Truth Seekers Summit
Image
Documentarians must perform particularly tricky balancing acts with each new project. The audience expects their work to be richly cinematic, entertaining and surprising; the standards of their profession, too, dictate that they must be fiercely attentive to the facts. Unlike directors working on scripted films, they can’t find an easy fix if the facts don’t suit their story — they must follow the truth wherever it leads.

That’s among the challenges that several field-leading documentary filmmakers discussed at Variety and Rolling Stone’s Truth Seekers Summit on Aug. 14. The work each respective director has made recently diverges from their fellow panelists in style, in subject matter and in approach, but all the filmmakers share a commitment to using the tools of art to reveal stories the viewer may not have expected.

There are interesting concordances between the documentaries on offer. Many, for instance, cover figures and incidents in...

Marc Maron’s ‘Are We Good?’: What happens when stars clash with their documentary filmmakers
Image
In Steven Feinartz’s documentary Are We Good? about comedian and podcast pioneer Marc Maron, the director and subject grapple over who is in control of the narrative.

When Feinartz suggests animating still photographs to help chronicle both Maron's career and his life after the unexpected death of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, the comedian is against it. Yet Feinartz, who had full creative control over the project, used the animation anyway.

"The moment I mentioned animation, I could already hear [Marc] recoiling," says Feinartz. "If the film didn’t have that back and forth, it wouldn’t feel like a Maron doc. He’s not someone who just sits back and lets you tell his story. There was trust, but also a kind of tension."

Are We Good?, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 14, is the latest celebrity documentary that incorporates a star subject visibly and verbally...

Netflix Unveils Trailer, Premiere Date For Karol G Doc ‘Tomorrow Was Beautiful’

Netflix has set a May 8 premiere doc for Tomorrow Was Beautiful, its documentary on Colombian music superstar Karol G, also unveiling a first trailer, which you can view above.

Hailing from director Cristina Costantini (Mucho Mucho Amor) and R.J. Cutler’s This Machine, the doc tells the story of an artist who was told her dream was too big, that she was the wrong gender, and from the wrong place, to ever be a global star, disproving each assertion. The doc traces Karol’s rise from humble beginnings in Medellín to international stardom, as she proves the critics wrong with an electrifying, record-breaking stadium tour.

The film’s producers are Cutler, Elise Pearlstein, Trevor Smith, Cristina Costantini, Kristofer Ríos, Alex Simmons, and Mariem Pérez. Mark Blatty, Margaret Yen, John Janick, and Nir Seroussi served as executive producers.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Back in December, Elton John revealed that he had lost his eyesight.

The unexpected revelation came as Elton addressed the crowd at a charity performance of the Devil Wears Prada musical, for which he wrote the score.

The rock icon suggested that his eyesight had deteriorated to the point that he was unable to view last night’s performance.

Oscars: Bob Dylan Was Invited to Present and Perform (Exclusive)
Image
The Oscar for best original song was handed out at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday night by none other than Mick Jagger, who announced the winner: ”El Mal” from Emilia Pérez.

“The producers wanted Bob Dylan to do it, but Bob didn’t want to,” joked Jagger. “‘The best songs this year are obviously in A Complete Unknown. You should find somebody younger.’ Ok, I’m younger than Bob! So here I am.”

It turns out Dylan was really invited to present and perform at the Oscars, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Earlier in the evening, Oscars host Conan O’Brien also suggested that Dylan, the subject of the Oscar-nominated A Complete Unknown, had passed on attending the ceremony.

“Dylan wanted to be here tonight, but not that badly,” O’Brien joked in his monologue.

Diane Warren, nominated for “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight, could have achieved her...

Anora tops the Academy Awards with five wins, including 4 for Sean Baker
Image
And so, the 97th Annual Academy Awards are in the books! Anora came out on top, with Sean Baker winning a fantastic four of the film’s five Oscars. Mickey Madison took Best Actress over frontrunner Demi Moore, while Adrien Brody won for The Brutalist. One-time frontrunner Emilia Perez won Best Original Song, while Zoe Saldana won Best Supporting Actress (for which she thanked her co-stars as a collective; she never thanked the seemingly now cancelled Karla Sofia Gascon).

As for the show itself, it was reasonably entertaining, although it lacked the charm of last year’s Oscars, which had memorable bits by John Cena, plus Michael Keaton channelling Batman, and more. This year seemed dry in comparison, with Conan O’Brien a fine but very safe host. Probably the most energetic part of the night was when Mick Jagger, still oozing star power at 82, came out, cracked the house up with a Bob Dylan joke,...

Oscars 2025: Complete Winners List (Updating Live)
Image
The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.

And that includes who wins tonight. “Emilia Pérez” might have the most nominations (13), but Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía-Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced. In stepped “Anora,” which won top prizes with both the PGA and DGA and seemed ready to sail to a Best Picture victory…until “Conclave” swept in and showed us that the race was much tighter than we’d thought.

And what looked like an unobstructed path to best actress anointment for...

H.E.R. Is ‘Bummed’ Oscars Won’t Include Performances of Best Original Song Nominees: ‘It’s Kind of Weird’
Image
H.E.R. is weighing in on Oscar producers’ decision not to include performances of this year’s best original song nominees during Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony.

The singer-songwriter would have performed Diane Warren’s “Journey” from the “The Six Triple Eight” soundtrack if the traditional performances took place.

“It’s kind of weird, but I’m just happy to be there,” H.E.R., who won the original song Oscar in 2021 for “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah,” told me Saturday night at the Chanel and Charles Finch pre-Oscars dinner at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hill Hotel, “Performing or not, the song’s gonna live on, whether we perform it on the Oscar stage or not, I was a little bummed because I look forward to those performances, not just being in it, you know, but it’s totally fine. It’s still gonna be a great show,...

Oscars Producers Never Considered Scrapping the Show Due to Wildfires: ‘We Employ Thousands of People’
Image
In the wake of the wildfires that blazed through Los Angeles in January, a handful of Hollywood staples — from Stephen King to Jean Smart — called upon the Academy to shift or cancel the Oscars altogether. But scrapping the event was never considered by the show’s executive producers.

“It was never a discussion to cancel or to move the show,” executive producer Raj Kapoor told TheWrap, adding that the team worked with city and state officials to ensure the show met safety regulations to go on. “As producers and for the Academy, it was really important message of support for the city that the show does continue. We employ thousands of people — we are a show that is responsible for … a piece of people’s annual income. So many people work on this show and depend on us.”

Kapoor, who executive produces the Oscars alongside Katy Mullan, noted that with...

“She just has a vision in her head the whole time. As she’s making the song, sometimes you’re speaking to her and she’s not there because she sees like the whole picture, she sees everything,” he shared. “This song kind of ended up becoming about like a night out and someone casting a spell on you, and she decided that she wanted that part of the song to be the spell that was being cast.”

The nominees and stars of the hit Universal film adaptation will take the stage for the March 2 telecast, though details on which song they will perform remains under wraps.

Oscars 2025: ‘Wicked’ Stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Will Perform on Telecast (Exclusive)
Image
Wicked’s Oscar-nominated stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will perform on Sunday’s Oscars, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

In addition, Doja Cat, Lisa of Blackpink, Queen Latifah and Raye are also set to take part in “showstopping performances celebrating the filmmaking community and some of its legends” during the Oscar telecast, according to the Academy. The show also will feature a special appearance by the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

While it’s not yet known which song or songs Grande and Erivo will perform — options include, of course, “Popular,” “Defying Gravity,” “What Is This Feeling?” or some medley thereof — the word is that they will kick off the show.

Earlier this month, Puck reported that “the Academy and executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan have decided to open the show with a Wicked medley.” Kapoor and Mullan may have “decided” that, but sources close to the telecast...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Wins Top Prize From Cinema Audio Society
Image
The music-focused biopic “A Complete Unknown” has been honored for its sound mixing at the 61st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, which took place Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.

The Bob Dylan film is one of two Cas winners that are also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound, the other being the Cas animation winner, “The Wild Robot.”

Since 2020, when the Oscars combined its Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing categories into a single Best Sound category, the Cas winner has gone on to win the Oscar every year. Prior to that, the Cas winner would take the Oscar for mixing about half the time.

The award for documentary feature went to “Music by John Williams,” which triumphed in a music-dominated category; other nominees included “Elton John: Never Too Late” and “I Am: Celine Dion.” The television non-fiction category was won by the music-centered “Beatles ’64.”

In the other TV categories,...

Oscars Best Original Song breakdown: How ‘mal’ publicity could derail favorite ‘Emilia Pérez’ in Best Song
Image
Best Original Song at the Oscars presents an interesting choice for Oscar voters. With a few of the top contenders snubbed from the category altogether — “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot, “Compress/Repress” from Challengers, “Harper and Will Go West” from Will and Harper — this would seem to be a cakewalk for the one original musical in the category, Emilia Pérez, which also happens to be the year’s most-nominated film. But behind-the-scenes scandals have scrambled this race, and many others. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

SEEOscars Best Picture breakdown: Why ‘The Brutalist’ is now the frontrunner after ‘Emilia Pérez’ controversy Frontrunner: “El Mal” from Emilia Pérez

The song that won the Golden Globe Award and Critics Choice Award is the favorite here as well. It benefits from how well liked the film is by the Motion Picture Academy as a whole, with...

2025 Oscars: Best Original Song Predictions
Image
Nominations voting is from January 8-17, 2025, with official Oscar nominations announced January 23, 2025. Final voting is February 11-18, 2025. And finally, the 97th Oscars telecast will be broadcast on Sunday, March 2 and air live on ABC at 7:00 p.m. Et/ 4:00 p.m. Pt. We update our picks through awards season, so keep checking IndieWire for all our 2025 Oscar predictions.

The State of the Race

Regardless of who wins, Netflix seems bound to collect an Oscar for Best Original Song, but the details as to why are still very fascinating.

“Emilia Pérez” has long been an awards juggernaut, but the Karla Sofía Gascón social media scandal really threatened to clip its wings. It still seems like it is on track to win Best International Feature and Best Supporting Actress, but this category is where people are starting to call for something different.

Diane Warren has been nominated for a competitive Oscar 16 times now,...

‘The Wild Robot,’ ‘The Brutalist’ win big at Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards, ‘Emilia Pérez’ shut out
Image
The Wild Robot‘s Oscar prospects may have gotten a boost on Wednesday as the Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its sixth annual award winners. The animated feature won Best Original Score for a Studio Film, defeating three of its Oscar rivals: Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Conclave. The last of this year’s Best Score Oscar nominees, The Brutalist, competed in another category at the Scl Awards, winning Best Original Score for an Independent Film.

So does that mean the Oscar will come down to The Wild Robot and The Brutalist? In the Scl Awards’ previous five years, they agreed with the Oscars three times: Joker (2019), Soul (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023). In 2021, the Scl voted for Encanto (studio) and The Green Knight (independent), but the Oscar went to Dune. And for 2022, the Scl picked Nope (studio) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (independent), while the Oscars opted for All Quiet on the Western Front.

Diane Warren Performs Medley of Her 16 Oscar-Nominated Songs, Including This Year’s “The Journey” from ‘The Six Triple Eight’ (Video)
Image
It’s fitting that the tune from the film The Six Triple Eight for which the legendary songwriter Diane Warren is Oscar-nominated this year is called “The Journey,” because no other Oscar contender has had a journey quite like Warren’s: This year, the 68-year-old Van Nuys native is nominated for the best original song Oscar this year for the 16th time in her career, the eighth year in a row and the tenth time in 11 years. And she has yet to win!

No person has ever been nominated more times for that category’s Oscar — and no woman has ever received more noms in any Oscars category — without winning. (Warren did receive an honorary statuette from the Academy in 2022, but it’s just not the same thing!)

Lest one assume that Warren hasn’t won because she is disliked, the exact opposite, in fact, is true — she is actually...

Oscars’ Best Original Song Nominees Sound Off on ‘Disappointing’ Decision to Omit Performances From Telecast in Songwriters Hall of Fame Panel
Image
Songwriters representing all five of the compositions nominated for best original song at the 2025 Academy Awards got together virtually for a Songwriters Hall of Fame discussion that is premiering online today, discussing not only the inspiration for their award-worthy tunes but the hot-button topic about how they feel about the Oscars having announced the decision to eliminate performances of those songs from this year’s telecast.

The hour-long discussion, which is free and can be found on the Shof website here (now through March 3), features Abraham Alexander and Adrian Quesada, writers of “Like a BIrd” from “Sing Sing”; Brandi Carlile, who co-wrote “Never Too Late,” from the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late”; Clément Ducol and Camille, dominated twice for a pair of “Emilia Pérez” songs, “El Mal” and “Mi Camino”; and category mainstay Diane Warren, up for “The Journey” from “The Six Triple Eight,” her 16th nomination in the...

Diane Warren on Her 16th Oscar Nomination: ‘Yes, I Would Like to Break My Decades-Long Tradition and Win’
Image
Diane Warren has never won an Oscar. But she has a lot of nominations.

The songwriter is up for her 16th nod in the original song category for “The Journey” from Tyler Perry’s Netflix movie “The Six Triple Eight” performed by H.E.R. And while she does have an honorary Oscar, which the Academy awarded her in 2022, she has yet to land a competitive one.

Of course, she would like that to finally, at long last, happen: “Yes, I would like to break my decades-long tradition and win.”

Could this finally be her year?

Warren’s song is up against two songs from “Emilia Pérez,” “El Mal” and “Mi Camino,” as well as “Never Too Late” from the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late” and “Like a Bird” from A24’s prison drama “Sing Sing.”

“The Six Triple Eight” producer Keri Selig was the one who pitched Warren on the...

‘Emilia Pérez’ plummets to 4th place in Oscar odds amid Karla Sofía Gascón mess
Image
What a difference a week makes.

When the Oscars nominations came out on the morning of Jan. 23, Emilia Pérez dominated the field with a record 13 bids (the most ever for a non-English language film). Many awards pundits thought the French musical dramedy from acclaimed filmmaker Jacques Audiard could go all the way and win Best Picture, and Gold Derby’s official odds on Jan. 24 reflected that. At the time, Emilia Pérez stood in second place behind only Brady Corbet‘s The Brutalist.

However, after multiple scandals involving lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón erupted, Emilia Pérez has now tumbled down to fourth place in our Best Picture rankings. Gascón (who made history as the first openly trans actress to receive an Oscar bid) first accused “people working with” her co-nominee Fernanda Torres of “tearing [Gascón] down.” She then deleted her X account after offensive social media posts from the past five years were uncovered.

2025 Oscar winner predictions: ‘The Brutalist’ takes the early lead in these 5 categories
Image
Since the Oscars nominations were announced on Thursday, 4,000 people have already made their winner predictions at Gold Derby. At this initial stage, The Brutalist is the one to beat, with five forecasted wins: picture, director, actor, cinematographer, and score. Brady Corbet‘s period piece about a Holocaust survivor (Adrien Brody) who hopes to achieve the American Dream received 10 total bids, as did Wicked, while the nominations leader was Emilia Pérez at 13.

Other films with impressive nom tallies on Thursday were A Complete Unknown (eight), Conclave (eight), Anora (six), Dune: Part Two (five), The Substance (five), and Nosferatu (four). See the complete list of nominations.

The four acting winners are currently expected to play out like this: Brody for actor, Demi Moore (The Substance) for actress, Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) for supporting actress, and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) for supporting actor. But the odds could change depending on what happens...

2025 Oscars: Universal’s Film Empire Nabs Historic 25 Noms, Netflix Leads Individual List With 16
Image
When it comes to this year’s Oscar nominations, the love was spread across the distributor scoreboard, from legacy Hollywood studios and their specialty divisions, to streamers and maverick indie distributors.

Netflix walked away with the most of any individual distributor on Tuesday with a total of 16 nods after Emilia Pérez landed a spot in 13 categories, the most of any film this year and setting a new record for a non-English-language film. And it’s just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).

Next up on the Academy’s scorecard of top-nominated individual distributors was powerhouse A24 with 14, including 10 for The Brutalist. The movie, which swept the Golden Globes, will use its front-runner status as it continues to expand in theaters, where it has earned a promising $5.9 million despite only playing in several hundred cinemas to date.

2025 Oscars: ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘Wicked’ Dominate the Craft Nominations with 7 Apiece
Image
“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”

Jacques Audiard’s operatic thriller “Emilia Pérez” grabbed cinematography (Paul Guillaume), makeup and hairstyling, editing (Juliette Welfling), score (Clément Ducol and Camille), sound, and two original songs (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol and Camille and Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Camille and Ducol).

Jon M. Chu’s populist blockbuster “Wicked” captured costume design (Paul Tazewell), production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing (Myron Kerstein), sound, score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz), and VFX.

Sharing four noms were “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Nosferatu.”

Brady Corbet’s post-Holocaust immigrant drama “The Brutalist” nabbed cinematography (Lol Crawley in retro VistaVision), production design, editing (David Jancso...

Oscars 2025 | The nominations are in
Kieran Culkin
Kieran Culkin, Conclave, Ariana Grande and more have been nominated for golden men. Here’s the list of Oscars 2025 nominations:

We’ve put on our finest clothing and poured a glass of champagne in honour of the Oscar nominations that have just emanated from the Academy’s chimney.

Among the big names in the running for an award this year are Wicked star Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress, Kieran Culkin in the Best Supporting Actor category for his engaging turn in A Real Pain, and Nosferatu for Best Make-Up & Hair. (We like to think that it was Bill Skarsgård’s moustache that swung the latter nomination.)

Fun fact: three of the five nominations in the Best Visual Effects category have primates in. Something for the VFX studios out there should think about if they want a nomination next year.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on the...

Elton John
High-Profile Documentaries Miss Academy Awards Shortlist
Elton John
Many documentaries were made about famous people like Elton John, Celine Dion, and Christopher Reeve, but none of them made the Academy’s shortlist for Best Documentary. However, Elton John’s brand-new song “Never Too Late” made it to the Original Song list.

The Documentary Branch of the Academy looked at 169 qualified films and chose 15 finalists. Festival favorites and politically charged works made up most of this list. Ten of the chosen documentaries had their world premieres at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and others were shown at important events in Berlin, Venice, and Toronto.

“Elton John: Never Too Late,” directed by R.J. Cutler and David Furnish, gained notoriety for its title song, even though celebrity-focused films often face major rejection. John told Deadline some things he knew about how the song was made. He said Brandi Carlile wrote it after seeing an early version of the documentary. “When she came up with this song,...

Docs About Elton John, Celine Dion, Christopher Reeve Notably Snubbed in Oscar Shortlist
Image
Members of the Academy Documentary Branch sifted through 169 eligible nonfiction features to determine this year’s shortlist. The 15 selected films are beautifully crafted docs about interesting and important subjects. Ten docs that made the list premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, while the five remaining debuted at other top-tier festivals, including Berlin, Venice and Toronto.

“No Other Land,” about the resistance of Palestinian activists against forced displacement in the West Bank, won the best documentary prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and recently earned top accolades from the National Board of Review. The film does not have U.S. distribution. Brett Story and Stephen Maing’s “Union,” about a group of current and former Amazon workers attempting to unionize employees, premiered at Sundance. After successful screenings at 50 festivals worldwide, Story and Maing self-released “Union” via Level Ground this fall. Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev’s “Porcelain War” also debuted in Park City,...

Image
With over five decades of iconic popular music that includes several hit Broadway shows, one critically adored biographical feature film, and unforgettable duets with the likes of John Lennon, George Michael, Patti Labelle, and Britney Spears just to name a few, it’s a testament to his genius that legendary musician Elton John is still standing and eager to make new music. “I still love playing the piano,” John tells Deadline. “I’m waiting to get back in the studio. I can’t wait to release new stuff. I’m raring to go.”

The new documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, directed by R.J. Cutler and John’s husband David Furnish takes a deep dive into the highs and lows of the singer-songwriter’s multi-faceted career. Elton John on ‘Never Too Late’ Oscar buzz: ‘I’m so proud of it’
Image
Two-time Oscar winner Elton John is back in the awards conversation with his inspirational ballad, “Never Too Late,” a duet with Grammy winner Brandi Carlile featured in the Disney documentary about his life, Elton John: Never Too Late. Shortlisted for Best Original Song at the 2025 Oscars, the title track was co-written by John and Carlile in collaboration with Bernie Taupin, John’s longtime writing partner, and producer Andrew Watt.

The 1994 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is no stranger to accolades. Last year, John became the 19th artist to achieve Egot status when Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium won the Emmy for Best Variety Special (Live). This win completed his grand slam of showbiz awards, which include the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

Here, John tells Gold Derby about his Egot moment, how his collaboration with Carlile came to be — and the real reason he hopes “Never Too Late...

Cinema Audio Society Likes the Sound of ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Wicked’
Image
“A Complete Unknown,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” have received nominations for the 61st annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Sound Mixing in 2024, the Cinema Audio Society announced on Tuesday.

All five of those films are also on the 10-film Oscar shortlist in the Best Sound category, and four of the five received multiple nominations on Monday for the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards. “Gladiator II” is on the Oscar shortlist but was bypassed by the Mpse.

Since the Oscars combined Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into a single Best Sound category in 2020, Cas nominees have gone on to receive 15 of the 20 Oscar nominations. But only two of the five matched last year, after the first three years had produced four or five matches each year.

In the animation category, the Cas nominees were “Inside Out 2,” “Moana 2,” “Mufasa: The Lion King,...

More Than a Third of Oscar-Qualifying Films This Year Are Not Eligible for Best Picture
Image
There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.

The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.

Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

Image

The two large-scale productions each received three nominations in the seven Golden Reel feature-film categories, with both films nominated for its feature dialogue/Adr, feature effects/Foley and music editing.

Films with two nominations included “Alien: Romulus,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Emilia Perez,” “Wicked” and the two documentaries “Elton John: Never Too Late” and “Music by John Williams.”

In the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Effects/Foley category, the Golden Reel category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Sound, the nominees were “Alien: Romulus,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “Nosferatu” and “September 5.”

Television programs with multiple nominations included “The Penguin,” “Ripley,” “Masters of the Air,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,...

BAFTA Awards: ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘Conclave’ Lead Longlists With 15 and 14 Nods Apiece
Image
The British Academy has unveiled the results of the first round of voting across all 25 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with two very different thrillers leading the pack of longlisted features.

Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language music-thriller that was picked up by Netflix in Cannes, has emerged ahead of the race with slots in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress and three in the supporting actress list. Meanwhile “Conclave,” Focus Features’ Papal mystery-thriller from Edward Berger set within the Vatican, has 14, including best film, director and leading actor for Ralph Fiennes.

Further down, a tight pack of films includes “The Substance,” “The Brutalist” and “A Complete Unknown” on 11 lists, “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” on 10 and “Anora” and “Gladiator 2” on nine. All, with the exception of “Gladiator 2,” are on the best film longlist. Ridley Scott’s epic return to the coliseum also missed out...

Better Man: Controversial Pop Star Robbie Williams’ “Forbidden Road” Song Disqualified From Academy Awards
Image
Robbie Williams, the British pop icon, has suffered a setback in his Oscar aspirations. His original song, “Forbidden Road,” written for the upcoming biopic “Better Man,” has been disqualified from consideration for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

“Better Man,” a unique cinematic experience featuring a CGI monkey portraying Williams, incorporates his own music into the narrative. “Forbidden Road,” a new composition penned specifically for the film, had initially made the shortlist of 15 songs vying for an Oscar nomination.

Better Man: Controversial Pop Star Robbie Williams’ “Forbidden Road” Song Disqualified From Academy Awards

However, the Academy’s music branch has ruled that “Forbidden Road” incorporates elements from an existing song, “I Got a Name,” from the 1973 film “The Last American Hero.” This contravenes the Academy‘s strict eligibility criteria, which mandates that original song submissions must be written exclusively for the nominated film.

The decision to disqualify “Forbidden Road” was not taken lightly.

Why Robbie Williams Was Disqualified from Oscars 2025 for His 'Better Man' Original Song
Image
Robbie Williams has already earned a Golden Globe nomination for his song “Forbidden Road” from Better Man, but now he has been disqualified from Oscars contention.

Better Man is a new film about the life of the British pop star with a CGI monkey playing the singer instead of an actual actor. The musical uses Robbie‘s songs and “Forbidden Road” is a new one written for the film.

The song was up for the Best Original Song award at the upcoming 2025 Oscars and the Academy already revealed that the song made it on the shortlist of 15 songs that will compete for a nomination.

Now, it has been revealed that the Academy has disqualified the song.

Keep reading to find out more…

Variety reports that the song “incorporates material from an existing song that was not written for the film.” To be eligible for Best Original Song, a song must...

Elton John’s New Wax Figure Is Defying Gravity
Image
Elton John has long been immortalized on wax (y’know, vinyl records), and now he’s been immortalized in wax with a new statue at Madame Tussauds London.

The figure impressively captures John in the midst of one of his famous piano handstands. The wax figure’s outfit is based on the one John wore at his 1975 Midsummer Music Festival at Wembley Stadium, with the musician giving the Madame Tussauds team access to the Bob Mackie jumpsuit he wore for that performance (just as a reference; the one the figure...
