Paul Gregory Tazewell was born and raised in Akron, OH. After graduating high school, he initially attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY to study fashion design. He soon realized that his fascination with clothing extended beyond the modern streets and runways and he refocused his studies towards costume design at North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. After graduating from NCSA, he moved back to New York City to attend NYU and received his MFA in costume design.

He designs costumes primarily for Broadway, theater, and dance; his most well-known work for theater is on Hamilton (2015) for which he won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical in 2016. Film and television works include The Wiz! Live (2015) for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2016, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (2017), and Elaine Stritch at Liberty (2002).
