A lot of drama is building up on Beyond the Gates the week of April 21-25. This could be the week a decades-old secret is outed, a man’s life could fall apart, and another fights to save his law firm.
Power and Consequences
Bill’s business decisions may come back and bite him in the you-know-what. What’s so interesting about this is that Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) removed herself from the case. The women decided to take the settlement Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) offered. All should be good, right? Wrong.
In order to clean up Mike Davis’s (Pierce Lackey) mess, Bill and the partners had to expel him from the firm. So we’re thinking there must be employees at the firm who aren’t happy with the way the lawsuit played out. Remember when Bill’s biggest problem was Dani (Karla Mosley)? That might not be the...

For someone who started out as an athlete and then became one of the most iconic actors of his generation, James Caan is definitely a special kind of talent. It is up for debate which role and which film is his most iconic, but certainly The Godfather is one of the first movies people think of when they think of James Caan. In 1972, everything changed for Caan when he played Sonny Corleone in The Godfather and basically ignited his entire career. Throughout the '70s and '80s, James Caan starred in a number of great films that were looking to capitalize on what Caan brought to The Godfather. This started as early as two years later when Caan was the star of a solid crime film called The Gambler.
For the next two decades, Caan would star in multiple crime films and none of them reached the heights of The Godfather.

F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horrors was an unauthorized yet first adaptation of Bram Stoker 1897’s novel Dracula, the most influential literary source for the vampire legend. To evade copyright law, Nosferatu’s screenwriter Henrik Galeen changed the story from London to the fictional small-town of Wisborg, Germany, and also altered the characters’ names. But Bram Stoker’s estate filed suit, claiming the adaptation was an infringement. The German court ruling (in 1925) ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. As a result producer Albin Grau (also the film’s costume designer and art director) who produced only Nosferatu under his company banner, Prana Film was forced to declare bankruptcy. The orders were followed meticulously although one print, thankfully, found its way to the United States.
In his 1997 review of Nosferatu, film critic Roger Ebert (which he included in his ‘Great Films’ list) writes, “Ironically, in the...

Although the late, great James Caan delivered iconic performances as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather and Frank in Heat, the single best role of his career may have been as the struggling English professor Axel Freed in the brilliant thriller The Gambler. Based on the novel of the same name by Fyodor Dostoevsky, the film explored gambling as a legitimate addiction issue and allowed Caan to sink his teeth into one of the most despicable anti-heroes in screen history. Living up to such a beloved classic was always going to be a difficult task, but director Rupert Wyatt took it upon himself to reimagine the story of The Gambler by placing it within a modern context. The remake of The Gambler was able to differentiate itself from its predecessor thanks to a surprisingly brilliant performance by Mark Wahlberg, who delivers one of the most captivating and surprisingly earnest roles of his entire career.

If you love the classic TV Westerns of the 1950s and '60s, then there's a two-part made-for-television movie that you've just got to see. The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw hit NBC in 1991, continuing The Gambler television saga first made popular by singer-songwriter Kenny Rogers' 1980 TV film. Yes, Rogers starred in his own installment of Western pictures inspired by his most famous tune, and though there were five installments total, it was the fourth that pushed Rogers' Brady Hawkes into the Wild West of the early 20th Century, just in time to meet up with some of television's greatest stars.

One of the most iconic scenes in Deadpool &Wolverine was the dance/fight sequence set to the Nsync song "Bye Bye Bye," which was a massive hit in 2000. However, a song by a different pop group was initially considered for the opening scene.
Speaking to MovieWeb, the film's editors, Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid said a song by the Backstreet Boys was one of the initial picks along with several other tunes. "It actually started with Kenny Rogers' song 'The Gambler,' which all of our pre-vis was cut to," Reid explained. However, Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, and director Shawn Levy didn't think it was the right fit. "At a certain point, the film took on a different language. The song didn't quite work with the same energy that we wanted that scene to have."

Deadpool & Wolverine nearly said Bye Bye Bye to its now iconic opening dance number, as the inclusion of Nsync's hit song came late into production, and a rival boy band was a close contender to serenade the opening. The scene sees Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) desecrate Logan's (Hugh Jackman) grave to confirm he's actually dead. When Tva agents apprehend Deadpool, he uses Logan's adamantium skeleton to brutally kill them, taking short breaks to dance to Nsync's anthem.
During an interview with MovieWeb, Deadpool & Wolverine's editors, Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid, revealed that the opening dance scene nearly featured a hit song by Backstreet Boys, as well as a number of timeless classics in the early drafts of the movie. The earliest edit of the movie opened with a very different tone. As Shane Reid explained, "It actually started with Kenny Rogers' song 'The Gambler,' which all of our pre-vis was cut to.

When it comes to betting, Asian cinema knows how to raise the stakes, both on-screen and off. With sports betting, card games, and the classic game of chance woven into the fabric of so many films, these movies don’t just depict a quick soccer bet. Instead, they capture the adrenaline, the tension, and yes, the inevitable heartbreak of gambling. Asian filmmakers don’t sugarcoat the gambling world; they throw you right into the fire, where fortunes are made and lost in the blink of an eye.
The High-Stakes World of Tazza: The High Rollers
Take Tazza: The High Rollers from South Korea, for example. This film isn’t just about gambling—it’s a crash course in the dark side of betting. It shows us the seduction of big wins and the catastrophic consequences of chasing losses. You’ve got your slick conmen, the hustlers who make you think...

Legendary actor James Caan was known for his role as Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. The actor received an Academy Award nomination for his role as Don’s eldest son and was often regarded as one of the greatest actors of the generation. Caan also starred in films such as Misery, The Gambler, and Elf.
Caan has also turned down many noted roles that turned out to be game-changers for the actors who ended up playing them. Among films such as The French Connection and Apocalypse Now, Caan was rumored to be offered the role of Han Solo in Star Wars. Richard Foronjy, who spent more than eight years in prison before he turned to acting and appeared in such films as Serpico, Midnight Run, Repo Man and Carlito’s Way, died Sunday, his family announced. He was 86.
Foronjy said he was arrested more than 20 times for “forgery, bank robbery, credit card rip-offs, assorted crimes and skullduggery … [guilty of] almost everything except drugs and homicide,” he said in a 1987 interview with Upi’s Vernon Scott.
The Brooklyn native was convicted only once, but that got him an 8½-year stretch in the New York prisons Sing Sing and Attica before he was released when he was 32.
In Hollywood, not surprisingly, Foronjy specialized in portraying cops and crooks.
He was a cop killer in his screen debut, Serpico (1973), and cops in The Morning After (1986) and Prince of the City (1981), all for Sidney Lumet. “I was especially good at playing cops, no doubt because I got to...

M. Emmet Walsh is dead at the age of 88, his manager Sandy Joseph told IndieWire. The grizzled character actor appeared in Hollywood movies across 55 years and was one of the most recognizable “oh yeah, that guy!” performers in the industry. Even just by saying “grizzled character actor” you probably pictured him, even if you didn’t know his name.
Walsh had bit parts in “Midnight Cowboy,” “Little Big Man,” “Serpico,” “What’s Up, Doc?” and “The Gambler” at the start of his career. But it’s two films from the early 1980s that put him on the map and truly lodged him in the consciousness of cinephiles: “Blade Runner” and “Blood Simple.” In Ridley Scott’s film he played Capt. Bryant, who sends Harrison Ford’s Decker on his quest to terminate the escaped, murderous replicants. Or “retire” them, rather. That’s the kind of euphemism Walsh, in his rumpled way,...

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.
M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

1974 was quite a year for cinema; 50 years later, Netflix (of all places) is celebrating the golden jubilee.
In recognition of the anniversary, the streamer on Wednesday launched a new, dedicated content row (and direct URL link) with the first films being honored under its new “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection” banner. Each of the 14 films came to Netflix this month by way of Warner Bros., Paramount, or Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
The 1974 collection includes “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Black Belt Jones,” “Blazing Saddles,” “California Split,” “Chinatown,” “The Conversation,” “Death Wish,” “The Gambler,” “The Great Gatsby,” “It’s Alive,” “The Little Prince,” “The Lords of Flatbush,” “The Parallax View,” and “The Street Fighter” (“Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken”).
Netflix doesn’t plan to stop with disco’s heyday. In April, the streaming service will do the same for films from 1984 (turning 40); July will celebrate 1994 movies (turning 30); and in October...

In 1973, producer Irwin Winkler attended the New York Film Festival and decided to check out a new film by a talented young director. Winkler liked what he saw in Martin Scorsese‘s “Mean Streets,” and he was flattered by the fact that Scorsese paid tribute to one of Winkler’s early films by featuring a poster for “Point Blank” at a key moment. “Somebody arranged for Marty and I to have coffee, and we just hit it off,” Winkler told IndieWire. Thus began a producer-director partnership that would yield some of the greatest movies ever made, including “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” and “Silence.”
Winkler would be a legend in the business based on just the movies he made with Scorsese, but they’re the tip of the iceberg. “You look at his credits and it’s astonishing, even if you know him and even if your own films are among them,...

Supernatural's extensive use of music, spanning across multiple genres, adds depth and atmosphere to the show's various storylines and emotional moments. Iconic songs such as "Beautiful Loser" by Bob Seger and "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi perfectly complement specific scenes, enhancing their impact and adding a layer of meaning to the characters' experiences. The show's musical choices also serve to introduce and establish important characters, like the haunting song "O, Death" by Jen Titus which accompanies the introduction of the terrifying character Death, creating an atmosphere of tension and fear.
Supernatural had a 15-season run full of monsters, death, and family, but it also had a lot of good music to accompany the long-going show. Throughout the years, the series pulled from several genres from classic rock to the singer-songwriter genre. However, without fail, each song seamlessly fits into the situation within its use of following two brothers...

“Irvin Cartagena sold fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York said Wednesday, regarding the the September 5, 2021 transaction in Brooklyn’s South Williamsburg neighborhood. “In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams.”
In front U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams earlier in the day, Cartagena pleaded guilty to “one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl analogue, fentanyl, and heroin.” That plea specifically cited the death of Williams as a consequence of Cartagena’s drug slinging. Set to be sentenced later this year, Cartagena, aka “Green Eyes,” faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 40 years on the charges.

Paul Sorvino’s family have called out the Academy Awards for not including the Goodfellas star in its “In Memoriam” segment.
During the ceremony on Sunday (12 March), Lenny Kravitz performed “Calling All Angels” as a screen behind him showed a montage of notable figures from the world of film who have died in the past year.
These included Olivia Newton John, Ray Liotta, Angela Lansbury, Jean-Luc Godard and Irene Cara.
Other stars to be featured in the segment were Burt Bacharach, Nichelle Nichols, Kirstie Alley and Racquel Welch.
Noticeably missing from the tribute was Paul Sorvino, the character actor and opera singer known for his menacing performances in movies such as Goodfellas, The Gambler, and Romeo + Juliet.
The actor died of natural causes in July 2022 at the age of 83.
After the awards show, Sorvino’s eldest daughter, actor Mira Sorvino, tweeted: “I for one am remembering Dad on this Oscars night…...

Throughout his career, the recently departed actor James Caan took on a number of roles that would've stumped lesser actors than he: a hotheaded and doomed mob boss' son in "The Godfather," a crippled and subdued author in "Misery," and a cold-hearted cynic who denies the existence of Santa Claus in "Elf."
Yet, all of those characters were relative walks in the park for the tough guy performer, especially since Caan was more than comfortable with playing complicated, tragic and unlikeable people — as his work in "Brian's Song" and "The Gambler" proved early on in his career.
One of Caan's greatest challenges was instead playing a man who's outwardly competent, fair, motivated, and decent, but inwardly is dealing with a raging turmoil of frustration and a sense of lost time: the professional safecracker Frank in Michael Mann's feature debut, "Thief." The complexities of the part combined with Mann's insistence...

When we last left the Downton Abbey crew — various Crawleys, assorted Pelhams, some Talbots, and their lively band of servants — things were looking on the up and up. The king and queen had come to visit and, after a predictably amusing series of mishaps and pratfalls, the stopover had proven to be a massive success. Loves were lost and found again. Matriarchs rose and fell. History was kept close and cherished. The estate didn’t burn down. No one died.
It all made for a charming last hurrah, with the film picking up five years after the beloved television series had ended, giving both fans and newbies a glimpse into how the lives and loves of a sprawling cast of characters were continuing to unfold. And yet, while Michael Engler’s film offered plenty of closure on a number of stories and subplots, it also seemed to test the waters...
