For most of American television history, viewers could expect long-running shows to release new episodes incredibly frequently. I Love Lucy, for instance, never had even six months off the air between seasons. The same can be said for other top shows throughout the decades, which aired a new season air every year on a fairly strict September-through-May schedule.
This regularity is precisely why American fans joked about how long they had to wait for new seasons of Sherlock when it was airing, as the two-year gaps seemed excruciatingly long. However, that structure, which is more normal across the pond, is now becoming the standard in the States as well. It doesn't seem to matter how many episodes are in the series or what genre it is; new seasons of TV are taking a long time to make.

Several great stories about the underbelly of Victorian London get smushed together to yield something less great but often extremely entertaining in Steven Knight’s new Hulu drama, A Thousand Blows.
Knight comes off less like a master storyteller here than a highly enthusiastic autodidact learning new things and then flailing a bit in making connections. That just means that, at its worst, A Thousand Blows — which caps these first six episodes with a “To Be Continued” title card and clips from additional upcoming episodes — will send interested observers online in search of the true stories about all-female criminal gangs, nascent gloved boxing and 19th-century concert hall performers.
So you’ve got well-acted, well-produced, genre-bending period television and an inspiration to do further research? You could do far worse, and the wildly prolific Knight — he of Peaky Blinders, The Veil and All the Light We Cannot See — has done both better and worse.

Bectu Launches Biggest Ever Survey
British broadcasting union Bectu is launching what it is calling its largest ever survey of those working behind the scenes in TV and film. The union is asking workers across the UK’s creative industries about their experiences and views on key issues facing the sector, including pay, employment practices, mental health and wellbeing and finances. The move comes with the freelance workforce in a perilous position, with thousands exiting the sector as they struggle for work and grapple with low pay and poor conditions. Bectu has repeatedly stressed that this is worsening as time goes on. “Creative industry workers are critical to our economy and to our social and cultural fabric,” said Bectu head Philippa Childs. “But data on creative workers is lacking. The freelance nature of the creative industries means that freelancers often fall through data gaps on employment statistics, while without formal employment structures,...

Plus, Jane and Guildford's love starts out as enemies to lovers and also has an element of a forbidden romance to it since he's an Ethian. I mean, where are you truly going to find a show like that?
Unfortunately, you can't. That's what truly made My Lady Jane so special and we're still so mad that Prime Video cancelled the show after only one season. Disney+'s The Artful Dodger has been renewed for a second season, and there are already a ton of exciting details about the imaginative sequel to Oliver Twist. Picking up years after the events of Charles Dickens' beloved book, The Artful Dodger concerns the eponymous character, now grown, who hopes to establish a new life for himself in the colony of Australia. Unfortunately, the return of the dastardly Fagin presses the old pickpocket back into service, putting his hopes of a better fate in jeopardy. Like many modern takes on classic literature, Dickens' source material is merely the jumping-off point.
Season 1 of the series added a host of new wrinkles to the Oliver Twist mythos, and the ending of The Artful Dodger was clearly setting up for more. However, it seemed as if the big-budget historical drama was destined to be a one-season-wonder. Fortunately, after nearly a year of waiting,...

In a surprise move, Disney+/Hulu has just renewed one of their more underrated shows for a second season!
Disney+ and Hulu fans have complained on the tendency to cancel some promising shows after just one season. That includes the well-received Renegade Nell and American Born Chinese. It's the metrics of the business, and compared to, say, Netflix, Disney+ isn't quite as bad at axing shows too soon.
So it's a surprise that, almost a solid year after its first season premiered, Disney+ and Hulu have announced a second season for The Artful Dodger. Given the first year was mostly overlooked and it's been so long since it was completed, a second season coming in 2025 is a bit unexpected.

An acclaimed under-the-radar Disney+ and Hulu show has been renewed for season 2. Over the years, Disney+ has established its reputation as more than just a home for classic family-friendly tales. The platform's venture into historical dramas has produced captivating shows, films, and performances of period storytelling with modern twists, such as the award-winning musical Hamilton. Released in 2020, it centers on the life of U.S. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, played by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and his involvement in the American Revolution accompanied by the sounds of R&b, pop, and soul.
Historical dramas have been a quiet but mighty throughline in Disney's production house. Disney+'s roster includes older period films such as The Adventures of Huck Finn and Sword in the Stone. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise remains a tried and true period drama, based on a fictionalized version of the Golden Age of Piracy, filled with swashbuckling crime.

The eight-episode Season 2 stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Jack Dawkins, aka The Artful Dodger, David Thewlis as Fagin, and Maia Mitchell as Lady Belle Fox. They team up with a full ensemble of Australian and New Zealand cast members and several new faces in cameo roles.

Anne with an E was definitely one of the best shows on Netflix. Even though the period drama was canceled in 2019 after three seasons, us fans still think about it and are upset it did not continue and get a proper ending. If you're like me and miss Anne with an E, then you might be looking for something to fill that void. Well, we've got some recs for you!
The Artful Dodger
Stream on Hulu and Disney+
Even though The Artful Dodger has a male lead, that doesn't mean there aren't similarities between the titular character, aka Jack Dawkins, and Anne. Plus, the story serves as a sequel to the events in Charles Dickens' famous novel Oliver Twist, and features a strong female lead, Lady Belle Fox, played by Maia Mitchell. And spoiler alert, there's a romance that brews between Jack and Belle that you will ship just like Anne and Gilbert.

Everyone loves a good period drama. It's fascinating to glimpse into the past and see the sort of lives people might have lived back then. In some ways, period dramas are escapism, providing audiences with a feast for the eyes when it comes to the dresses and the settings, but in other ways, these movies can serve as history lessons.
Britain has a lot of history to work through and that's where period dramas come in. Some of them are beautiful, some of them are informative, but they usually have something serious to say about class structure and the restrictions of British society.

The Bikeriders was one of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2024, due in large part to a stellar cast that included Austin Butler, Tom Hardy and British superstar, Jodie Comer. In the film, Comer plays Kathy, the partner of Austin Butler's Penny, and her performance serves as a reminder of how talented the actress truly is.
Comer's filmography is impressive, to say the least. Her range of acting has taken her from a modern-day, manipulative assassin, to a troubled caretaker in a period piece. She undertakes her roles with precision and is only ever an asset to whichever project she's in. Though her stage performances, like Prima Facie, are more than worthy of an honorable mention, this list compiles the best of Comer's performances on both the big screen and TV.

Each new storyline brings a fresh perspective and new characters, which makes each of the show's releases so engaging.

To borrow from Davia, it's the end of an era.
With a heavy heart and the taste of bittersweetness, with Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 20, we not only said goodbye to the series but also marked the end of a franchise.
As a result, this unplanned finale had double the impact, as characters we've experienced for an entire decade signed off, presumably for the last time.
It's never easy to say goodbye to a series that has made it this far. In an industry where we frequently see series get the boot before it can even get into telling its stories, Good Trouble making it five seasons is a remarkable feat.
And even the diehard, most dedicated fans of this series often agree that the series was due to get wrapped up sooner rather than later.
