After first making a name for himself in Hollywood with roles in films like The Spectacular Now, the Divergent trilogy, That Awkward Moment, and Fantastic Four, Miles Teller experienced a resurgence in popularity following his scene-stealing performance in the 2022 blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick. The highly-buzzed-about sequel to the celebrated '80s classic featured Teller teaming up with silver screen staple Tom Cruise's test pilot and flight instructor Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he teaches a new group of ambitious Top Gun graduates.
Prior to Maverick, Teller famously appeared in two well-received but financially underwhelming films: Todd Phillips' black crime comedy War Dogs and the war drama Thank You for Your Service. Let's take a closer look at the war movies and how he finally landed a slam dunk at the box office by starring in Top Gun: Maverick.

Like the majority of the original features released on Apple TV+, Scott Derrickson’s sci-fi thriller The Gorge boasts a solid cast, with some of the top-billed stars of the industry playing lead roles. Too bad the movie fails to do justice to their talents, despite the narrative providing every opportunity to do so. The Gorge follows two elite snipers who are sent to stand guard over either side of a gorge to keep the horrors that lurk within the murky depths of the valley below from escaping. After the duo ends up falling into the gorge, they need to make an escape while taking on the undead monstrosities of the hellish landscape, and in the process, they discover the sinister secrets that created these abominations in the first place.

About 15 years ago, Guy Lawson had lunch in New York with his editors at Rolling Stone. He was tired of covering the drug wars in Mexico, and wanted to know what else they might be interested in.
“We want you to do stories about young people doing fucked-up things,” he was told.
The conversation led to an article about two stoner arms dealers who became entangled in corruption in Albania, which became a book and then the 2016 movie “War Dogs,” starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller.
“It was a great story,” Lawson says.
It also got him sued. A year after the movie was released, Shkelzen Berisha, the son of the Albanian prime minister, accused Lawson of defamation.
The suit went to the Supreme Court, which refused to hear it. But two justices, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, sided with Berisha and suggested that New York Times v. Sullivan, the...

Filmmaker Todd Phillips rose to fame with his work on The Hangover trilogy. Despite extensively working in the comedy genre, Phillips shocked everyone with his take on the DC Comics Clown Prince of Crime in 2019’s Joker. The film starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role was a critical and commercial success.

In an interview, Phillips discussed the genesis of the Academy Award-winning DC movie. At the same time, Phillips criticized the current state of the comedy genre primarily because of the rise of woke culture. As a result, Phillips was driven to make Joker because of his disdain for the woke culture, and here is what he had to say about it.

Disgraced filmmaker Brett Ratner will direct a new documentary on First Lady Melania Trump, which will be released in theaters and stream on Prime Video in the second half of 2025.
Promising an “unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look,” production on the documentary began in December 2024, with Trump herself serving as an executive producer. As such, it’s probably safe to assume the film will be heavily sanitized, likely avoiding any controversies surrounding her or her husband, President Donald Trump.
The documentary is the latest example of Big Tech and Hollywood’s embrace of the Trumps ahead of their impending return to the White House later this month. In recent weeks, several high-profile CEOs, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, have met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Additionally, Amazon donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund.
Meanwhile, the project marks Ratner’s first major production since he was accused of sexual misconduct by six women,...

Todd Phillips is one of the most successful comedy movie directors of all time. The filmmaker began his career by directing comedies such as Road Trip, Old School, and Starsky & Hutch, and then helmed 2009's The Hangover, which instantly became a comedy sensation. This led to Phillips making two more Hangover movies, completing the trilogy. After the massive success of the Hangover movies, Phillips had a lot more freedom to take on whatever projects he wanted.
This led to him directing Joker in 2019. Joker was another massive success for Phillips, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. This year, Phillips also directed the much more controversial sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. However, before he directed either of the Joker movies, Phillips directed a dark comedy crime film in 2016, which was his first film after The Hangover Part III.

A young film student contacts an artist to design a poster for his new documentary about a musician. The film student was named Todd Phillips, the musician was named Gg Allin and the artist was named John Wayne Gacy… who happens to be an infamous serial killer known for dressing like a clown. This artistic contribution earned Gacy an “executive producer” credit and gave the documentary some dark twisted notoriety – not that Gg Allin needed any. That’s right: the director of Joker got his start thanks to a real-life serial killing clown. Director Todd Phillips went on to bring us some of the most interesting and hilarious films of the past few decades. He was pumping out groundbreaking blockbusters left and right for years, surprising us all with classics like The Hangover and Joker and instantly disappointing us all with their sequels. But has Todd Phillips sung his last great cinematic song?...

The 2007 teen comedy Superbad has an outstanding ensemble cast full of big-name stars. Most of Superbad's best quotes are from its three main characters, Seth, Evan, and Fogell aka McLovin, who are played by Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, respectively. Directed by Greg Mottola, Superbad is written by comedic partners Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, the latter of whom plays Officer Michaels in the film. The protagonists, Seth and Evan, are loosely based on Rogen and Goldberg and their real-life experiences growing up as seniors in high school in Vancouver, Canada.
Superbad was the 21st highest-grossing movie in 2007 with a domestic total of $121.46 million. It was a breakout movie for both Hill and Cera and is widely considered a landmark film in the modern comedy genre. It would be weird for fans to see Todd Phillips back to direct the Wolfpack members on another adventure gone wrong. The Hangover was a film that worked on a particular formula, that has been used over and over again in its sequels and other similar comedy films. While Bradley Cooper may want to go down his comedy roots again with a fourth film, it just doesn’t make any sense at this point.

Todd Phillips made his directing and writing debut on a feature film with Road Trip back in 2000, for which he also has an acting credit. From there, the director has gone on to create some of the best comedies that have stuck around since their initial release. His usual genre took a slight turn with War Dogs, although the film is still laced with humor.
However, Phillips really showed the extension of his abilities with the thriller film Joker in 2019, which he also wrote and directed. Todd Philips, the director of Joker: Folie Deux was initially known for laugh-out-loud movies like Old School, Road Trip, Due Date, and The Hangover. He made some of the best comedies of an era not too long ago. In 2019, Philips released his dark take on the clown prince, called Joker. It was a stand-alone story, only borrowing the lore from the Batman world, but not working within it or extending previous Batman storylines. When the Todd Phillips-directed crime drama Joker opened in theaters in 2019, the War Dogs and The Hangover helmer surprised cinephiles with something different from the DC Universe. Joker’s dark and exploratory take on the classic Batman villain immediately became a cinematic sensation, with scores of moviegoers divided about the film’s unique vision of the Jester of Genocide and the beginnings of his hold over Gotham’s less fortunate and frustrated. 2016's War Dogs movie was based on real events, but the War Dogs' true story was different than what appeared in the film. At the center of the film, the two real-life protagonists, Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) and David Packouz (Miles Teller) are low-level arms dealers who manage to win a contract with the Pentagon worth $300 million to arm American allies in Afghanistan. The premise alone makes it hard to believe that War Dogs is a true story, but while there are some embellishments, this strange tale has a lot of truth to the story.
The Todd Phillips movie has a lot of fun embracing the oddity of this crime story. Efraim and David's contract means they're responsible for arming allies of the US with weapons in Afghanistan. 22 Jump Street is one of the best comedy films to come out of the 2010s, and alongside its hilarious jokes and exciting action, the film produced an iconic Channing Tatum meme that remains funny a decade later. After the success of 21 Jump Street in 2012, Phil Lord and Chris Miller produced an equally strong sequel, with both movies finding plenty of success. The films each received strong reviews and were also big hits at the box office, creating a strong franchise that almost led to a 23 Jump Street and Men in Black crossover.
Although Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum were already established names before signing up for 21 Jump Street, the comedy cemented their status as big stars, with the sequel confirming it. Jonah Hill has had some big roles since, as the likes of War Dogs and Don't Look Up continued to highlight the actor's comedic qualities.

Jonah Hill is an exceptional actor and he has proven time and again that he could easily transition between comedy and drama roles. Hill also wore the director’s hat a few times and is currently directing Keanu Reeves in the film Outcome. However, he may have lost a role in one critically acclaimed superhero film.

Manny Jacinto already has a considerable filmography but his role in The Acolyte arguably propelled his career. The actor gave fans a good reason to rewatch Top Gun: Maverick by confirming he initially had a more prominent role in the film.
The Acolyte wrapped up with shocking reveals that prompted a petition for a follow-up season. The show had a handful of standout characters, but Manny Jacinto's The Stranger / Qimir was a surprise fan favorite; was nondescript in the initial episodes but he turned out to be the main antagonist. His performance earned critical praise, which hopefully opens new doors for his career (he already has a sizeable filmography with appearances in Bad Times at the El Royale and Nine Perfect Strangers). In an interview with GQ Magazine, he revealed he also could have had a more significant role in Top Gun: Maverick.

Deadline reports that the “Top Gun: Maverick” star is set to star in a modern retelling of “An Officer and a Gentleman,” the 1982 romantic drama starring Richard Gere.

Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance, making Oscars history as the first Black winner in the category. Marvel Animation's Eyes of Wakanda will explore the history of the hidden African nation from the perspective of the War Dogs. The War Dogs worked for the White Wolf in Marvel Comics, so the moniker could be explored in Eyes of Wakanda. Bucky Barnes is the White Wolf in the MCU, though the true nature of the moniker is still a complete mystery in the MCU.

Todd Phillips may be blessed with a keen eye when it comes to cinema but his comments on Christopher Nolan’s universally recognized classic, the Dark Knight trilogy, is a scarily contentious opinion. But as sacred as Christian Bale’s DC outing may have been, there exists a limitation to the height of the pedestal that one is allowed to be raised to.
Batman Begins (2005) [Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures]With the passage of time, it may have become easier to cope with the withdrawal of Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece. However, it is with loyalty, dedication, and love that the audience time and again returns to the Dark Knight trilogy. This shows not only an instinctive pull towards the series but also an admiration unmarred by time or repeated watching.
The Spirituality of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy
It’s not every day that one can claim to live through the golden era of DC.

War Dogs explores the ethics of arms dealing and government contracts, based on the true story of David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli. The movie takes creative liberties but stays true to the backstories and motivations of the characters, depicting their arms dealings with the US government. Is it time to #RestoreTheMadameWebVerse?
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, we doubt it, but Madame Web is proving to be a hit on Netflix. After debuting on the streaming service earlier this week, Sony's Marvel Comics adaptation has hit #1 on the streamer's "Top 10 Movies" list.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).
