Sugar-Conny debuted in the three-page one-off story "Sugar-Conny greets", published in Joakim Pirinen's debut series album "Välkommen till sandlådan/Welcome to the Sandbox", published in 1983 by Tago Förlag. The character's origin can be traced to a tragic real-life incident; one of Joakim Pirinen's parents' friends had died after a car accident with subsequent prolonged hospitalization. The dead man's wife then called her best friend to announce the death. "But we've known for a long time that he was going to die, said the friend. Do you have to call at half past ten on a Saturday morning to say this?"
