    Setting is the worst

I like this episode, at first, I didn't know what was actually going but throughout many episodes, I've actually realized that this was some sort of trilogy and I like it so far. Hong Chau in this is honesty spine chilling since she played in one of my favorite movies, "The Whale" Hong getting an Oscar is insane and I enjoy it. So for her getting in this mystery show is amazing. However, I was quite uncomfortable with the setting in this episode since I don't like the country side of places where things are far apart and such. However, this is a good approach to an episode. I really enjoyed it.

    Subway

"The Night Shift" fails to strike the delicate balance between product placement and storytelling, resulting in a disappointing episode.

The excessive promotion of Subway hampers the authenticity of the action on screen, taking away from the plot and the performances of the cast.

The episode serves as a reminder that organic integration of advertising is essential for maintaining the integrity of a television show.

While it is understandable that television shows rely on advertising partnerships to fund their productions, it crosses the line by sacrificing genuine storytelling.

Let's hope that future episodes can find a more subtle and balanced approach to product placement.

I love it when one actor just steals the show!

Great episode. Natasha Lyonne is of course brilliant (everything she does here is such a fantastic tribute to Peter Falk, if this was a Columbo remake I would welcome it with open arms), but John Ratzenberger stole the show with an understated performance. Not many words, just a few gestures was all he needed to show everything we needed to know about this character.

I'm enjoying having a different cast in each episode (reminds me of 80s show I grew up with) so as long as they keep the quality this good I will definitely keep watching.

I am really enjoying this show, and can't wait to see where Charlie goes next.

    On the road...

Starting in episode two, "Poker Face" begins in a different town each installment. Here, Charlie finds herself in a town in the Southwest which is incredibly lonely and rural. Before she appears in the show, you learn that a nice guy who works at Subway is murdered in order to steal his winning lottery ticket. As usual, once Charlie appears, she cuts through the lies and learns what really happened and that the death was actually NOT an accident but a murder.

This is well written, interesting and features the usual nice acting. Well worth seeing and one of the better shows of season one...which is filled with great episodes.

    • Trivia
When Jed calls 911 from the gas station, the address he gives ("421 Route 66") is the actual physical address of the filming location in Moriarty, New Mexico.
    • Goofs
A building number "9200" is clearly visible on the front of The Roadhouse diner near the roof line. The service station is just a few doors down on the same side of the road. The station is twice stated in dialog to be at "421 Route 66". Numbers 421 and 9200 would not be near each other and would not be on the same side of the road. (The two filming locations were in different towns).
