After Bombing in Theaters, Robert De Niro's New Crime Drama Becomes a Streaming Success
Image
One of two-time Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro's most recent big-screen endeavors is fresh off a forgettable box office run and bad reviews that make it one of his least heralded projects. However, the Hollywood legend can now enjoy his film's shot at redemption as his biographical crime drama, The Alto Knights, finds new life on streaming following its Max debut.

Per Flix Patrol,The Alto Knights ranks as the #1 film globally on Max, HBO's streaming service, outperforming Mountainhead, Mickey 17 and four installments from The Hunger Games franchise on the top 10 chart. De Niro's mob-inspired film shot to the top of Max's streaming charts just five days after debuting.

What Is The Alto Knights About?

Helmed by Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson, who previously directed De Niro in Sleepers and The Wizard of Lies, The Alto Knights chronicles the lives of 1950s New York mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello,...

Spider-noir First Look Reveals Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man Noir In Upcoming Amazon MGM+ TV Series
Image
With the first Ironheart teaser expected to be released tomorrow and Superman's trailer confirmed for Wednesday, it's shaping up to be a busy week for news.

As for Monday, we're kicking things off with an official look at Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man in Amazon and MGM+'s Spider-Noir TV series.

The wall-crawling private investigator has already been spotted in set photos, but this spectacular black-and-white image is like seeing the comic books—and 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse—come to life in live-action.

Cage can be seen striking an iconic Spider-Man pose and will clearly be able to shoot webs in the show. Whether Spider-Noir can right the ship for Sony after disappointments like Madame Web, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter remains to be seen.

It's interesting that this still has been presented in black-and-white because Spider-Noir star Lukas Haas previously said, "We filmed it in - I...

Michelle Pfeiffer movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Michelle Pfeiffer is a three-time Oscar nominee who has starred in a variety of classics in her long career, excelling at everything from comedy to drama, romance and action. Take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Pfeiffer has had a 40+-year career on screen and has managed to overcome being known at first just for her looks. While her beauty was prominently on display in many of her first roles she quickly became more than just a pretty face and plunged herself into deeper and more complex roles. Pfeiffer’s first professional acting job was on a TV series version of the film “Animal House” called “Delta House.” Her character on the TV show was referred to simply as “The Bombshell.” This debut hardly signaled the arrival of an actress good enough to someday earn three Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nominations along with one win.

Barry Levinson movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson has enjoyed success on the big and small screens throughout his five decades. Take a tour of our photo gallery ranking his 12 greatest feature films from worst to best.

Levinson began his career as a comedy writer on various variety shows in the 1970s ultimately landing a steady job writing for 72 episodes of “The Carol Burnett Show,” for which he won Emmys in 1974 and 1975, competing again in 1976. When that show ended he began writing screenplays and had a remarkably successful run co-writing two Mel Brooks movies -- “Silent Movie” and “High Anxiety” -- as well as two acclaimed dramas “Inside Moves” and “and Justice for All.” He would receive his first Oscar nomination for the screenplay of “And Justice for All.”

That success led Levinson to a feature film directing career. His semi-autobiographical film “Diner,” about a group of young men hanging out in his native Baltimore,...

The Alto Knights Review — Double the De Niro, Double the Disappointment
Image
A part of me feels protective of the filmmaking team behind The Alto Knights. For one, Barry Levinson has had a historic and varied career, directing everything from Good Morning, Vietnam to Bugsy and his best collaboration with Robert De Niro, Wag the Dog. This marks his fourth film with the legendary actor, but unfortunately, it is more of a disappointment—much like Sleepers, What Just Happened, and The Wizard of Lies.

Another factor is De Niro’s third collaboration with Nicholas Pileggi, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Goodfellas and Casino (he also executive produced The Irishman). Pileggi lived it. De Niro brings his characters to life. However, many have pointed out that the film is full of crime tropes as if this is the first time it’s happened. I mean, how else do they become them in the first place?

Barry Levinson Has Steered Some Great Performances, but Directing Two Robert De Niros at Once Is Something Else
Image
Ever since he directed Robert Redford to one of his richest, most compelling performances in “The Natural,” Barry Levinson has had a knack for bringing out the best in iconic movie stars. Warren Beatty (“Bugsy”), Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, and Michael Douglas and Demi Moore (“Disclosure”), among many others, have done some of their finest work for Levinson in movies that capitalize on their strengths but provide opportunities to deepen and broaden their personas.

Even in this company, the relationship between Levinson and Robert De Niro is special. Since they first worked together on “Sleepers” in 1996, Levinson and De Niro have created a series of indelible characters, from the spin doctor of “Wag the Dog” and the beleaguered producer of “What Just Happened?” to real-life fraudster Bernie Madoff in “The Wizard of Lies.” These were all just a warm-up, however, for Levinson and De Niro’s latest collaboration “The Alto Knights...

Spider-noir Star Believes Upcoming TV Series Starring Nic Cage Could Be Released In Black And White
Image
Spider-Noir remains in production and, if the set photos we've seen are any indication, the web-slinger's first TV series will put a unique new spin on Spider-Man.

Screen icon Nicolas Cage plays Ben Reilly, a private eye who moonlights as a superhero. We've seen him swinging into action on set, suggesting the series will be very much in line with the comics, even though those featured Peter Parker under the mask. Why Spider-Noir is named after his clone hasn't been made clear.

Lukas Haas has landed a mystery role in the show and, during a recent interview with Coming Soon, suggested the series could be released in black and white as well as colour.

"It was just an incredible project," he told the site. "Everybody involved was amazing. Brendan Gleason, he plays my boss. Just getting to, to do that noir thing. It was very genuine film noir, the way they filmed it,...

TCM Classic Film Festival to Honor Michelle Pfeiffer With Hand and Footprint Ceremony
Image
Fans of Michelle Pfeiffer will get an opportunity to celebrate wildly — let’s call that “makin’ whoopee” — when she leaves her handprints and footprints in cement at the Tcl Chinese Theatre next month.

The ceremony will take place during the April 24-27 TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Thursday.

One of Pfeiffer’s most unforgettable performances — that of smoldering lounge singer Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), for which she received the second of her three career Oscar nominations — will be showcased at the 16th annual event as well. (Watch her in that film on the piano, and we do mean On the piano, here.)

“There’s an undeniable quality to any part played by Michelle Pfeiffer,” TCM host Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “She blends — seemingly effortlessly (though it surely isn’t effortless) — elegance with depth, capturing the complexity in every character she plays.

“For example,...

Robert De Niro Played a Very Different Kind of Real-Life Criminal in This Engrossing, Unexpected HBO Original Movie
Image
Robert De Nirohas a career so extensive that he has had the opportunity to work with many great filmmakers, such as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, Martin Brest, and Michael Cimino. While Barry Levinsonhas a track record that is far more hit-and-miss, he did direct De Niro in two very underrated films, Sleepers and Wag the Dog, both of which continue to age very well. Levinson’s career has taken a different direction since his initial collaborations with De Niro, as he has become more active in making prestige television projects. However, the two reunited to deliver a captivating true story about one of the strangest true crimes in recent memory. The Wizard of Lies features a fantastic performance by De Niro as Bernie Madoff, the financial criminal behind the largest case of fraud in American history.

Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Zero Day | Trailer released for Robert De Niro Netflix series
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Robert De Niro stars in the Netflix political thriller series Zero Day, and that’s going to debut this year. Here’s the trailer.

Over his extraordinary career, Robert De Niro has only appeared sporadically on the small screen. Perhaps most memorably, he appeared in a cameo at the end of series two of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s Extras. He also played politician Bernie Madoff in the HBO television film The Wizard Of Lies, appeared on Sesame Street and thus far has hosted Saturday Night Live three times.

He now leads Netlix thriller series Zero Day.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Netflix’s Zero Day is a limited thriller series starring Robert De Niro as respected former U.S. President George Mullen, who, as head of the Zero Day Commission, is charged with finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack that has caused chaos around the country and many fatalities.

'Zero Day' Trailer: Robert De Niro Hunts for Truth in Netflix Political Thriller
Image
Robert De Niro will be making his Netflix television debut next month in the political action thriller Zero Day, and the latest trailer for the new limited series showcases all the action and intrigue we can expect from its stacked cast. Zero Day centers around a devastating cyberattack that kills thousands of people, and when De Niro's character, former U.S. President George Mullen, is brought in to investigate, he's forced to not only wade through mountains of disinformation to get to the truth, but face his own shady past as a result.

"3,402 people died on Zero Day," De Niro says to open the trailer (seen below). From there we're treated to a barrage of news footage showing the effects of the cyberattack, with CNN's own Wolf Blitzer making an appearance to add, "Every phone in America displayed the same haunting message: this will happen again." In addition...

Spider-noir: Nic Cage Returns To Work As Private Eye Ben Reilly In Newly Revealed Set Photos
Image
It's business as usual in Los Angeles now the worst of the wildfires is over and Spider-Noir resumed shooting yesterday. Lead star Nicolas Cage, no stranger to comic book adaptations, has been spotted in costume as Ben Reilly, albeit in his P.I. gear rather than a super-suit.

The actor first played this version of Spidey in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and became an instant fan-favourite. The fact he's getting to reprise the role in live-action isn't something we ever expected, though this Spider-Man is Ben, not Peter Parker (we don't think that makes him a clone; it's more than likely a result of Sony not wanting to confuse audiences).

It's been a while since we got any updates about Spider-Noir but MGM and Amazon Prime appear to be moving full steam ahead with the streaming series.

While it was put into development before Sony Pictures pulled the plug on its villain-led Marvel Universe,...

Image
Sí, has escuchado bien: De Niro interpreta un doble papel. © Warner Bros

Completan...

Is The Alto Knights Based On A True Story? The Robert De Niro Gangster Movie's Inspiration Explained
Image
Robert De Niro's new film The Alto Knights is based on a real-life rivalry between two of America's most notorious gangsters, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. The Alto Knights is directed by Barry Levinson, the Academy Award-winning director of Rain Man (1988), The Natural (1984), Sleepers (1996), and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987). Levinson and De Niro last teamed up for the 2017 HBO original film The Wizard of Lies in which De Niro portrayed white-collar criminal Bernie Madoff.

The Alto Knights is set to be released on March 21, 2025. De Niro will play not one, but two, different Italian mob bosses in the film who are based on real-life mafia rivals, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. Jack Nicholson previously portrayed Frank Costello in Scorsese's Academy Award-winning film The Departed (2006), but drew inspiration from Joseph "Whitey" Bulger Jr., the infamous Irish mob boss out of Boston. De Niro will be joined by Cosmo Jarvis, whose...

Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
The Alto Knights | Trailer released for Robert De Niro dual role mob drama
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Robert De Niro goes up against Robert De Niro in biographical gangster drama The Alto Knights. Here’s a trailer.

When discussing mob drama The Alto Knights, formerly known as Wiseguys, it is impossible not to think about Martin Scorsese’s seminal gangster film Goodfellas, in which Robert De Niro played the smooth talking Jimmy Conway opposite Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. The Alto Knights reunites De Niro and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi for a story that sees De Niro play the dual roles of quarrelling mob bosses.

It’s safe to say we’re rather excited to see this.

The Alto Knights has been a long time coming. The film was stuck in development hell for a number of decades before Warner Bros revived the project in the summer of 2022.

The synopsis reads as follows:

“The most dangerous enemy is an old friend.” This mobster thriller movie follows two of...

‘The Alto Knights’ Trailer: Robert De Niro Portrays Two Real-Life Mob Bosses in ‘Goodfellas’ Reunion
Image
Robert De Niro is reuniting with his “Goodfellas” screenwriter Nick Pileggi for yet another true story of the Italian-American mafia.

De Niro in the first trailer for “The Alto Knights” portrays not one but two real-life mob bosses, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, during their turf rivalry in the 1950s. “Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever,” the official synopsis for the film reads.

“The Sopranos” and “The Wire” producer Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”) directs the film; Levinson previously collaborated with De Niro on the HBO TV movie “The Wizard of Lies” (2017) and political satire film “Wag the Dog” (1997).

The trailer shows De Niro going face to face with himself, with Costello and Genovese sitting across from each other as they threaten about going down a “very dangerous road.” Frank...

‘The Alto Knights’ Trailer: Robert De Niro Plays Two Mafia Bosses in Barry Levinson’s Crime Thriller
Image
Robert De Niro is a two-hit wonder in the trailer for the upcoming gangster film “The Alto Knights” from Barry Levinson. De Niro stars in a double role as both mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, real-life kingpins of New York’s Genovese crime family.

Alongside De Niro stars Debra Messing as Costello’s wife Bobbie, Kathrine Narducci as Genovese’s wife Anna and Cosmo Jarvis. “The Alto Knights” is set to follow the story of the Italian American mafiosi in the mid-twentieth century and Genovese’s attempted hit on Costello in 1957.

De Niro is no stranger to the crime thriller, especially ones with mob ties. One of his first was Martin Scorsese’s 1973 feature “Mean Streets” where he starred alongside Harvey Keitel. De Niro then joined Francis Ford Coppola for the 1974 “The Godfather Part II” and then Scorsese again for his 1990 mob feature “Goodfellas.” De Niro has also starred in “Casino,...

Robert De Niro Plays a U.S. President in Netflix's 'Zero Day' Trailer
Image
Robert De Niro is known as one of the most legendary movie actors to ever grace the big screen, but he continues to make his presence known on television. The Irishman star returns to Netflix next year in a brand-new limited series that will see De Niro portray a former President of the United States amidst a devastating cyberattack that shakes the core of the nation. The upcoming limited series tackles the aftermath of a plausible event in a world that feels strikingly close to ours, with a conspiracy that reshapes the very fabric of national security.

The official trailer for Zero Day positions De Niro as the man in charge of overseeing a widespread, invasive search for the perpetrators of the fictional attack. Thousands of people died as a result of the event, from crashed planes to other technology-based disasters. Meanwhile, the series will cover what discovering the truth...

Spider-noir Set Photos Reveal A New Look At Nicolas Cage's Private Eye Ben Reilly
Image
Sony and Amazon/MGM's Spider-Noir series appears to be taking some major liberties with the source material, but given how obscure this Variant of the web-slinger is, does it really matter if "Ben Reilly" is beneath the mask instead of Peter Parker?

That's debatable; regardless, Sony appears to be ignoring the fact Ben is Peter's clone and we don't anticipate that being addressed in any way when Spider-Noir swings on to streaming next year.

Today, we have some new photos from the TV show's set (via Just Jared) showcasing Nicolas Cage's private eye. We've already seen that the series will feature a comic-accurate superhero costume and Cage unquestionably looks the part of "Ben" in these snaps.

Earlier this year, Cage opened up on what led to him reprising a role he first played in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

"I know that the phone's going to be...

Spider-noir Set Photos Reveal First Look At Spider-Man Noir's Comic-Accurate Costume
Image
Given that it's being developed by Sony, there's been some concern among fans that Amazon's Spider-Noir series starring Nicolas Cage might not see the title character actually suit up.

Peter Parker has already been replaced by Ben Reilly as Spider-Man Noir, but newly revealed photos and footage from the show's set confirm we're getting a comic-accurate take on the wall-crawling private detective.

The hero looks like he's stepped straight off the page with a design that's also pretty much identical to what we saw in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Based on how this scene is playing out, Ben will see a fair bit of action as he rides atop a car while shooting webs into the distance. He also has his trademark hat and goggles, though we should point out that it's a stuntman in the suit, not Cage.

Cage will be joined in the series by Lamorne Morris (as...

Jeff Daniels would complete Emmy hattrick with win for ‘A Man in Full’
Image
Jeff Daniels is always a reliably excellent performer whether its in comedy or drama, TV or film, and the veteran actor has turned in another masterclass performance in Netflix’s “A Man in Full.”

Adapted from Tom Wolfe‘s novel of the same name and created by “Big Little Lies” helmer David E. Kelley, “A Man in Full” follows Daniels as real estate mogul Charlie Croker, who tries to protect his empire and legacy from crumbling when he falls into sudden bankruptcy. Daniels dominated the screen here, chewing scenery, spitting it out with venom, and then re-chewing the scenery some more. Whatever you may think of the show, Daniels is never anything less than ferociously good, as noted by critics.

Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) wrote that the show “struts about with swaggering ferocity, led by Jeff Daniels’ full-bodied performance as a blustery, bloviating capitalist predator… ego is both a...

‘The Night Agent’: Amanda Warren Aboard As Series Regular For Season 2

Exclusive: After starring opposite Jamie Foxx in Maggie Betts’ acclaimed legal drama The Burial, currently streaming on Prime Video, Amanda Warren has been tapped for the biggest new role in the second season of Netflix’s smash hit series The Night Agent, from creator Shawn Ryan and Sony Pictures Television.

The actress joins returning cast that includes Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan.

Now ranking sixth on Netflix’s Most Popular TV chart, The Night Agent amassed 168.7M hours viewed in its first few days on the streamer in March, within a week being set up for Season 2, in one of the streamer’s fastest renewals to date.

2024 Golden Globes: Will Harrison Ford’s past honorary trophy help him in competitive races for ‘Shrinking’ and ‘1923’?
Image
Heading into the 81st Golden Globe Awards, legendary performer Harrison Ford is eligible for two different small screen prizes – Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Supporting Actor – thanks to his respective turns on the inaugural seasons of “1923” and “Shrinking.” These possible dual bids would come 22 years after he was named the 48th recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille career achievement award and make him a proper Golden Globe competitor for the first time since 1996. Given the fact that 33 other DeMille awardees will have preceded him in subsequently landing regular nominations, it only makes sense to analyze those instances to determine just how great his chances of victory at the 2024 ceremony really are.

Until “1923” premiered on Paramount Plus last December, the 81-year-old Ford had never appeared in a regular capacity on a TV program of any kind. Within six weeks, however, he was officially a multi-series star showcasing...

‘Aquaman 2’ Now Going On A Friday; Robert De Niro Mobster Pic ‘Wise Guys’ Now Titled ‘Alto Knights’ & Moves Later In 2024
Image
What is it with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom? Is it Wednesday? Is it Friday? The DC sequel will now open on Friday Dec. 22 this year instead of Dec. 20. Know that Warners knows what they’re doing here: They turned Aquaman back in 2018 into the highest grossing DC movie of all-time at $1.15 billion. That movie launched on Saturday and Wednesday with previews, and after an official opening on a Friday (Dec. 21) cleared over $105M at the domestic B.O. by Christmas Day –which fell on a Tuesday that year. What they do here with the immediate shift is they capture more gross closer to the Christmas Day Monday when moviegoing shifts into high gear. It’s a four-day holiday weekend. Aquaman ended its stateside run at $335M.

Meanwhile, the Barry Levinson, Robert De Niro playing twin mobsters movie Wise Guys is now titled Alto Knights and has moved from Feb.

‘Aquaman 2’ Bumped Two Days, Robert De Niro’s ‘Wise Guys’ Renamed ‘Alto Knights’ in Move to November 2024
Image
Warner Bros. has given its upcoming theatrical slate a small shake-up. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” the final installment in the current continuation of DC Comics adaptations before an imminent reboot, has been bumped from Dec. 20 to Dec. 22. The shift from the Wednesday to the Friday release date gives the superhero film a traditional three-day opening in theaters, as opposed to the originally slated five-day rollout.

The slight delay gives “Aquaman 2” a little bit of extra space away from the Timothée Chalamet chocolatier prequel “Wonka.” Warner Bros. is also releasing that spin on novelist Roald Dahl’s enduring character, debuting the film on Dec. 15.

It’s a busy holiday season for the studio, which is also bowing its adaptation of “The Color Purple” musical on Christmas Day. That’s three big titles coming one after the other, arriving more than three months after the last Warner Bros. release — “The Nun II,...

‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ could bring TV movie representation back to Golden Globes
Image
Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.

Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

Robert De Niro movies: 27 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Robert De Niro has been a frequent presence at the Academy Awards, winning his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for playing young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather, Part II” (1974). He hit the jackpot yet again for his role as boxer Jake Lamotta in Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” (1980), which brought him a victory in Best Actor. “Taxi Driver” (1976), “The Deer Hunter” (1978), “Awakenings” (1990) and “Cape Fear” (1991) earned him subsequent nominations in lead, and he reaped another bid in supporting for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012) and one in Best Picture for “The Irishman” (2019).

Though he’s worked with some of Hollywood’s top directors, De Niro is best known for his collaborations with Martin Scorsese, starting with “Mean Streets” (1973) and leading to “Taxi Driver,” “New York, New York” (1977), “The King of Comedy” (1983), “Goodfellas” (1990), “Cape Fear,” “Casino” (1995) and “The Irishman.” Never ones to rest on their laurels, the duo are...

Why Sam Levinson Is Such a Divisive Director
Image
A director or showrunner transforms the script into powerful visual storytelling. It's undeniable that Hollywood has some of the finest creators who are known for their unique filmmaking styles worldwide. However, their distinctiveness can often get them into trouble, resulting in backlash from the audience and critics.

Sam Levinson's name needs no introduction in Hollywood. The filmmaker has made a name for himself in a short time by creating popular films and TV shows like Euphoria, Assassination Nation, The Wizard of Lies, Deep World, and the upcoming The Idol series. While some applaud Levinson’s bold take on sensitive themes, it doesn't always sit well with the rest due to a lack of character depth, unrealistic storylines, and excessive sexual content in his works.

Levinson, most renowned for his work as a filmmaker, also has acting experience. He made his acting debut in a 1992 film titled Toys, alongside his brother Jack.
