Filmmaking is quite literally in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s genes. Her mother is Oscar-winning screenwriter Naomi Foner (“Running on Empty”) who also directed the 2013 drama “Very Good Girls.” And her father Stephen Gyllenhaal has directed such films as 1992 “Waterland,” which featured his daughter, and 1993 “A Dangerous Woman.” But it took time for the Oscar-nominated actress (“Crazy Heart’) to follow in her parents’ footsteps.
“I think that now I have directed, I can see in a way I always was a director,” she noted in a recent American Cinematheque Zoom conversation with Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro (“The Shape of Water”). She added, though, it was so deep into her psyche that “it was even a secret for me.” She recently picked up Gotham Independent Film honors for writing and directing her first film, Netflix’s “The Lost Daughter,” starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris and her husband Peter Sarsgaard.

It took playing a woman who is empowered by becoming a film director in HBO series “The Deuce” for actress Maggie Gyllenhaal to imagine becoming one herself. As soon as she did, after binging the books of Elena Ferrante, from “My Brilliant Friend” to “The Days of Abandonment,” Gyllenhaal was inspired to take the plunge. Three years ago, on the verge of her 40th birthday, Gyllenhaal first wrote to Ferrante, asking the Italian author (whose identity is protected by her publisher) to let her option her 2006 novel “The Lost Daughter” for the movies. After a few email exchanges, the writer said yes. But her contract with Gyllenhaal was void, she told the actress, if she didn’t direct the feature herself. (Ferrante explained why in The Guardian.)
Gyllenhaal eventually obtained the author’s blessing on her script — which often departs from the original) —and cast Oscar winner Olivia Colman (“The Favourite...

In Patrick Brice’s latest Sundance Midnight offering “Corporate Animals,” Demi Moore plays a powerful, all-consuming CEO. Speaking with managing editor Christian Blauvelt at the IndieWire Studio presented by Dropbox, Moore talked about what she keeps in mind when signing on to new projects at this point in her career.
“I do want to be careful not to play into a cliche, which is that all older women are evil, bitter villains, which is one of the next kind of things that needs to be overcome,” Moore said. “We want romance too! We want all those things!”
In “Corporate Animals,” her character Lucy leads a disastrous retreat through some treacherous New Mexico caves. Karan Soni and Jessica Williams play the unwitting employees at her company, who find much more underground than either of them bargain for.

Last week, we had fun chiming in on how Sundance 2016 might look like with our Sundance predictions list. Our series was exactly one short from the promised 75. We decided to switch things up this year. Our last pick is reserved for what is a next to impossible, needle in the haystack guess at what films might break into the short film sections. Out of the 8000 plus submissions the Sundance Short Film programmers will receive, they’ll end up selecting a little less than a hundred short films. Here are some ideas as to who and what could show up.
The Bulb and The Procedure
No stranger to Park City, Calvin Reeder has supplied the fest with features such as The Oregonian (2011), The Rambler (2013) and could very well bring this Kickstarter pairing to public access television blitz and X-Files love. Production wrapped in August. Actors Linas Phillips and Christian Palmer star.

A creepy-cool vibe of constructed cinematic artificiality echoes the illusory nature of Stanley Milgram’s notorious experiment into human behavior. I’m “biast” (pro): love stories about science and scientists
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
You already know who Stanley Milgram is: he was the psychologist and researcher into human behavior who conducted the now famous — some would say infamous — experiment in which people were instructed to administer increasingly strong electrical shocks to a total stranger; most complied even over their own personal moral objections. The study, conducted at Yale University in the early 1960s and published in book form by Milgram in the early 70s, is considered essential to understanding our willingness to obey authority, how ordinary “good” people allow themselves to be complicit in terrible crimes such as the Holocaust; as the film notes, the study is...

2015 is a big year for Kiernan Shipka. The 15-year-old actress, best known to audiences as Sally Draper on AMC's "Mad Men," will be saying goodbye to the hit show that brought her fame as it wraps up its seventh and last season this spring — and hello to a new post-"Mad Men" stage of her already budding career. Read More: Meet the Faces of SXSW 2015: Sally Field, Nick Kroll, Jason Schwartzman and More The talented teen has kept busy during the hiatuses of "Mad Men" by appearing in a number of TV movies/shows and features, including Lifetime's "Flowers in the Attic" and "Very Good Girls," opposite Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen. ★★☆☆☆ Very Good Girls (2014) has all the trappings of an indie coming-of-age story: a hip soundtrack commandeered by musician Jenny Lewis; fresh-faced and innocent actresses; dreamy cinematography; just a dash of drama to appropriately weight the plot. This is all well and good but in a sea of films of this ilk, it gets drowned in its own good intentions. Naomi Foner's first outing as writer and director falls by the wayside very quickly, feeling like a exercise in derivative perceptions on what it means to become a woman. The narrative focuses on Lily (Dakota Fanning) and Gerry (Elizabeth Olsen) who are on their last summer vacation before college.

According to Us Weekly, the “Kill Your Darlings” starlet and her “Very Good Girls” hunk have called off their wedding and decided to go their separate ways.
Earlier this month, Boyd attended a Golden Globes party without Elizabeth, sparking rumors that there may be trouble in paradise. Meanwhile, Olsen will begin an international press tour for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in the months to come, so perhaps it’s all for the best.

Elizabeth Olsen has reportedly called off her engagement to actor Boyd Holbrook, Us Weekly confirms. The couple dated for nearly three years after meeting on the set of the film Very Good Girls in 2012. They got engaged in March 2014, just weeks after French banker Olivier Sarkozy popped the question to Elizabeth's older sister Mary-Kate Olsen. The last time Boyd and Elizabeth were spotted together in public was at the May 2014 premiere of Godzilla; most recently, the actress was seen without her engagement ring at an La farmers market, and Boyd was reportedly chatting up an unknown blonde at a pre-Golden Globes bash earlier this month.

Here’s the sad truth about life as a film critic – in order to get to the good stuff, you have to sift through a whole lot of shit first. This year, that law held as true as ever, and though 2014 yielded some truly extraordinary works of cinematic decadence and beauty, it also gave us some real clunkers. For every Guardians of the Galaxy, there was an Amazing Spider-Man 2. For every Interstellar, there was a Transcendence. This year, Hollywood rained such an unrelenting deluge of crapola down on moviegoers that some still claim 2014 was one of the worst years for movies on record.
Without getting into whether or not that statement holds water, it’s true that, over the past twelve months, I went up against some of the most atrocious and meritless messes I’ve ever encountered. Fuming in my seat, I quietly endured all manner of shallow,...

Coverage of Isa’s (international sales agents) resumed for The American Film Market. This segment follows leaders and innovation in the world of international film sales and distribution.
Sales veteran and President of 13 Films Tannaz Anisi launched her Los Angeles based distribution and finance company just a year ago at The American Film Market. Her expertise, honest work ethic, and keen sensibilities are widely respected in the industry and have helped her to start 13 Films with strong financial backing.
One year later, Tannaz shares the latest progress on this exciting venture:
I launched 13 Films a year ago, so this Afm marks my one year anniversary. It’s very exciting to see how far the company has come since its inception, as we continue to grow and build a full slate of films.
Given my background as a foreign sales agent, the timing was right to start my own company and I was able to secure strong investors to back my vision.
My aim is to seek cast-driven, commercial films with theatrical potential across all genres. Our eclectic state includes romantic comedies, action films, thrillers and family films.
We’re looking for about eight to ten films a year in pre-sales, peppered with a few finished films.
What is your background in sales?
For the last seven years, I was a freelance sales consultant and had the opportunity to work for some of the leading companies in the business - Voltage Pictures and Sierra/Affinity, to name a few.
Over the years, I developed great relationships and relished being able to work on high profile projects. However, I felt I was ready to make the transition from freelance consultant to having my own company and being able to immerse myself in my own projects.
Once I secured the financial investment, it was time to move forward with full force and determination.
How did you first get involved in the business?
I’ve been in the industry for about 18 years.
My very first job in the industry was working in production actually. I worked for PentAmerica Pictures, which was a partnership between Vittorio Cecchi Gori and Silvio Berlusconi.
Way back when I got the chance to work as an assistant at Afm, I fell in love with foreign sales from the very first moment. Since then, I was determined to succeed in the field and started from the ground up. I sought out the right opportunities to learn and absorb as much possible to reach the level where I’m at today.
My sales background started in television sales – I was fortunate enough to work for some of the bigger independent companies such as Win, Kushner-Locke and 20th Century Fox before moving into film.
What inspires you in your work?
What I love most is the face-to-face interaction with people from all over the world.
It’s truly fascinating and what drives me to continue doing this every day. The world is such a melting pot of different cultures, and being able to constantly meet and do business with buyers from across the globe is very rewarding. There’s never a dull moment.
Please talk about the 13 Films Slate.
We just announced our big, new project - "Voice From The Stone", which is a supernatural thriller starring Emilia Clarke from “Game of Thrones.”
It’s a haunting script produced by Dean Zanuck who also produced "The Road to Perdition". The film is currently shooting in Italy which is very exciting.
I have two other new projects too – an action film called "Extortion", which is a very fun project with Frank Grillo attached and set to start shooting by the end of November.
Another key title for us is the comedy "Loitering With Intent", which was well received at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and stars Sam Rockwell and Marisa Tomei. We showed the film for the first time to buyers here at Afm, and were thrilled with the response. It will be released theatrically in the Us by The Orchard, a Sony Pictures company.

Avengers actor Tom Hiddleston was earlier cast to play Williams in the indie, which will start shooting in Louisiana next month. Abraham adapted the screenplay for I Saw the Light from Colin Escott’s biography, which portrays the impact Williams’ fame had on his health and personal life. Acute portrayals and nice performances by leads Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen as best friends who pledge to lose their virginity before college, helps this mildly racy but ultimately innocuous teen sex film Very Good Girls stay a step or two above the exploitative premise to emerge as something almost worthwhile. Boyd Holbrook also gives more than the role calls for as the handsome street artist who becomes their would-be conquest. His role is believable and even brings out Fanning’s performance, delivering something that could have been icky, but remains tender and even a tad affecting. Olsen is good as well, but Fanning’s always seemed a lightweight before.
The problem with Very Good Girls (besides the 25-year old Ms. Olsen being far too old for this role) is that, despite the sexually tinged subject matter, the script is never fleshed out beyond what’s needed to service the plot.

Following the addition of Jennifer Connelly last week, Lakeshore Entertainment has brought on Dakota Fanning to star in American Pastoral.
Based on Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, American Pastoral follows Seymour "Swede" Levov (Ewan McGregor), a former high school athletic legend who wound up marrying the girl of his dreams Dawn (Jennifer Connelly) and inheriting his father's successful business. His picture-perfect life is torn apart when his daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) becomes a revolutionary and commits a deadly act of terrorism during the Vietman War.
Phillip Noyce (The Giver) is directing from an adapted screenplay by John Romano (The Lincoln Lawyer), with Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi producing.
Here's what Lakeshore president Gary Lucchesi had to say about the casting in a statement.
"The role of Merry is an extremely complex part, and I believe that Dakota Fanning will break our hearts with her performance."

When the Wachowskis’ space epic Jupiter Ascending was taken off the summer calendar and slotted for next February, we had a feeling that the shift might mess up Warner Bros.’ previously laid plans for early 2015. Now, the studio has officially announced what it’s changing – the Liam Neeson actioner Run All Night has been moved from February 6th (when Jupiter will now open) to April 17th next year.
Even if effects work hadn’t caused Warner Bros. to delay Jupiter, it was possible Run All Night still would have ended up moving forward. After all, Fox is releasing Taken 3, also with Neeson, next January.
Run All Night will mark Neeson’s third collaboration with Unknown and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra. Brad Inglesby (Out of the Furnace) penned the script, which centers on an aging hitman (Neeson) who is forced to go up against his brutal, sadistic former employer (Ed Harris...

[Warning: Spoilers ahead for Very Good Girls.] Your first time is often complicated, messy and awkward. At least that was the case for Oscar-nominated screenwriter Naomi Foner and Dakota Fanning, who explore virgin territory in the indie Very Good Girls, which is now in theaters. Foner, who's scripted such films as Running on Empty and Losing Isaiah — and is also Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal's mom — makes her directorial debut with the film, about two teenage best friends, Lilly (Fanning) and Gerri (Elizabeth Olsen), who make a pact to lose their virginity the summer after high school.

Very Good Girls is either a smart movie about families or a dumb movie about teenagers. Or maybe it’s a little of both. It’s allegedly about two Brooklyn teens (played by Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen) trying to lose their virginity one summer, but it’s really about the bonds of family and friendship. I know, I know — that sounds like a load of hooey, but Naomi Foner’s film really does wear its subtext on its sleeve. It’s well acted and psychologically acute, even if what’s actually happening onscreen often feels a lot less interesting than what’s clearly boiling beneath the film’s surface.Lilly (Fanning) and Gerri (Olsen) are inseparable best friends growing up in Ditmas Park, holding the rest of the world with a sort of playful but snotty disregard. They like to ride their bikes out to Brighton Beach and mock the people around them.

The Boyfriend Experience: Foner’s Directorial Debut a Derivative Shard
Screenwriter Naomi Foner makes her directorial debut with Very Good Girls, though her preceding reputation makes this sedimentary, uninspired film even more surprising. Mother of actors Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Foner penned several of ex-husband Stephen Gyllenhaal’s more notable titles, such as Losing Isaiah (1995) and A Dangerous Woman (1993). Considering the authoritative, complicated, and resilient female characters portrayed famously by the likes of Jessica Lange, Halle Berry, and Debra Winger, this trifling and tedious story of a late adolescent friendship tested by mutual attraction to the same boy seems born from the pen of a novice writing about her only familiar focal point,

Very Good Girls is a coming-of-age story starring two of the most talented young actresses out there today, so why is it so very hard to like? Almost nothing works in this limp excuse for a drama, from the contrived story to the clichéd characters to the awkward costume design. Even Elizabeth Olsen, horribly miscast, and Dakota Fanning, so vacant she appears translucent, can’t keep such a leaky vessel afloat.
Among Very Good Girls‘ many sins, perhaps the most glaring is that it feels like a movie written for teenagers by an adult who knows nothing about them. In the very first scene, high school seniors and lifelong friends Lilly (Fanning) and Gerri (Olsen) strip down at a public beach in broad daylight and run naked into the waves. I don’t know why. I don’t think writer-director Naomi Foner knows why. The film is filled with bizarre decisions like that,...

Proving she’s a multi-talented young lady, Elizabeth Olsen shows off her vocal chops in the newest clip or “Very Good Girls.”
Olsen’s character hops on stage for an open mic night and covers Rilo Kiley's "Go Ahead” with a gorgeously quirky tone. The band’s frontwoman Jenny Lewis scored the film, which is also directed by her pal Naomi Foner.
In addition to Elizabeth’s singing skills, the clip features a testy moment between Dakota Fanning and Boyd Holbrook’s characters while Olsen sings on stage.
Check out “Very Good Girls” in select theaters on Friday (July 25) and watch the clip in the player above!

It's a good month to be a Jenny Lewis fan. The actress turned singer has a new album out next week, Voyager, and the first video featured none other than Kristen Stewart, Anne Hathaway and Brie Larson (watch it here). And already on VOD, and opening in theatres this weekend, is the indie "Very Good Girls," starring Elizabeth Olsen and Dakota Fanning, and featuring an original score by Lewis. In addition, the musician taught Olsen how to play "Go Ahead" by her former band Rilo Kiley for the film, and this new clip shows how it turned out. "[Elizabeth Olsen] plays a young songwriter, so I chose a very old Rilo Kiley song for her to sing, because it felt conceivable that a young artist like her would write it," Lewis told Elle. "My friend Todd gave her guitar lessons, and she picked it up so fast! She’s a better finger-picker than I am now.

Last week we called Chrissy Teigen out for wearing a skintight skin suit and now Maggie Gyllenhaal goes and does the exact same thing. Though in her case it's a looser skin suit, which is about as gross a visual as we can imagine. Neither of the neutral-colored couture options is a good idea in our book, but if it's between the slouchy Maison Martin Margiela look on the Very Good Girls star or the plunging Elisabetta Franchi on Mrs. John Legend, we have a surprising selection. Yes, the Victoria's Secret supermodel looks incredibly sexy, but in this color we actually prefer the Brooklyn beauty's safari-inspired vibe. If Chrissy's look were in any other shade it would be the obvious winner,...

Very Good Girls is a film one wants to like but can't. It just doesn't work. Lifelong friends Lilly (Dakota Fanning) and Gerri (Elizabeth Olsen) have just graduated from their Brooklyn high school. Lilly is headed to Yale, Gerri is a budding songwriter, and both are virgins. Gerri develops a crush on David (Boyd Holbrook), a photographer-waiter who seduces Lilly, leading to a summertime romance she's afraid to reveal.
Very Good Girls is the directorial debut of Naomi Foner, whose Oscar-nominated script for Running on Empty (1988), starring the late River Phoenix, is a thing of beauty. At age 68, Foner has stepped behind the camera, which is great, but she's written herself a script that's painfully trite.

Looking quite chic, Maggie Gyllenhaal stepped out in the Soho neighborhood of New York City on Monday afternoon (July 21).
Rocking a peachy tan jumpsuit, the “Dark Knight” babe flashed a smile towards her awaiting fan base before heading inside the Tribeca Grand Hotel for a special screening of “Very Good Girls.”
Meanwhile, the brunette beauty is receiving plenty of praise for her role in “The Honorable Woman” on BBC TV.
Maggie portrays Nessa Stein, an Anglo-Israeli businesswoman who has transformed her father’s weapons company into a powerful staplea in the Middle East.
During an interview with MailOnline last month, Maggie talked about the role and said, “It’s maybe the fifth time I’ve done an English accent and this is the first time it was truly in my bones.”...
