‘Invasion’ Recap (Seasons 1-2): Story So Far
Image
When the AppleTV+ science fiction series, Invasion, first premiered back in 2021, it had offered a very interesting premise, as watching alien invasion stories made with a high production value is always exciting. But somewhere along the way, the show quite quickly turned out to have different ambitions, with much more of a focus on the drama of how human lives and relationships would get affected during such testing times. As a result, Invasion is undoubtedly the weakest among all the fascinating science-fiction shows AppleTV+ has to offer, like Severance or Constellation. As we hope that the soon-to-be-aired 3rd season will give a much-needed push to the show, here is a quick recap of everything that happened with the central characters in seasons 1 and 2.

Spoiler Alert

What is the show about?

Invasion begins on a very normal day for John Bell Tyson, as he prepares for his last day in office as the Sheriff of Idabel,...

Marisa Clifford & Davud Karbassioun Officially Unveil Magna Studios With Backing From Thomas Benski’s Lumina
Image
Marisa Clifford and Davud Karbassioun have officially unveiled their next-gen production house Magna Studios.

They’re billing it as a “a new kind of studio built to lead in a dynamic, platform-agnostic era,” sitting at the intersection of film, unscripted, brands and music content. It has been quietly operating for over a year, and we first wrote about it back in December 2024, but the founders have waited until now to officially launch.

Clifford and Karbassioun are co-CEOs of Magna, with Thomas Benski – who ran Pulse Films with Clifford until 2022 – the Chairman. Benski’s Lumina is an investor of what’s being described as a “well capitalized” business with bases in London, New York and L.A.

The senior management team comprises SVP of Non-Fiction Olly Calleja, Creative Director of Non-Fiction Louis Mole, Head of Music Documentaries Sam Bridger, Group Director of Commercial & Business Affairs Tim O’Shea and Managing Director,...

Friday The 13th Prequel Show Casts Horror Star As Mysterious New Character
Image
Peacock's upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, casts a horror movie star as a mysterious new character in the new TV show. The upcoming Crystal Lake TV show is set before the events of the first Friday the 13th movie, exploring the events that unfold at the titular location prior to the death of Jason Voorhees. Long-Delayed 'Friday the 13th' Prequel Takes Another Stomp Forward With a 'Forever' Star
Image
It’s been three years since Crystal Lake, a Friday the 13th prequel series, was first announced, and now, the call sheet is beginning to be made public. William Catlett will return to the horror genre following his turn in Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Universal monster flick, Abigail, in the role of Levon Brooks. As of right now, we don’t know how Levon fits into the story, but we know that Catlett will appear opposite Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me), who will lead the cast as Pamela Vorhees. The series is set to follow the days of Vorhees’ life before the scream-worthy events of Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 film, Friday the 13th, went down.

Along with Abigail, Catlett has recently appeared in feature-length titles, including Alexandre Aja’s survival horror flick Never Let Go and the A.V. Rockwell-helmed drama, A Thousand and One. On the small screen,...

Image
“Crystal Lake,” Peacock’s upcoming “Friday the 13th” prequel series, has added William Catlett to its cast.

Catlett will star alongside previously announced series lead Linda Cardellini, who will play Pamela Voorhees. Catlett will star as Levon Brooks, though exact character details remain under wraps. He previously worked with Akil on the CW superhero series “Black Lightning.” His other TV credits include “Constellation” and “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey” at Apple TV+ and “Lovecraft Country” at HBO. UTA Partner Jeremy Barber & Comms Vet Chris Day Join Kcrw Board
Image
Exclusive: United Talent Agency partner and agent Jeremy Barber and communications veteran Chris Day have joined the board of Southern California’s NPR flagship radio station Kcrw.

This move comes in the wake of President Donald Trump issuing an executive order to block federal funding to Public Broadcast Service and National Public Radio. Funding from both government and philanthropic sources has grown increasingly uncertain, while the information landscape is more fragmented than ever.

In this environment, stations like Kcrw play a key role in bridging divides, elevating underrepresented voices, and providing reliable, in-depth reporting at the local and global levels.

Barber and Day’s addition to the foundation signals the board’s commitment to preserving the role of public media as a trusted source of news, music, and thoughtful conversation for all communities.

“This is a critical moment for public broadcasting,” said Jennifer Ferro, president of Kcrw. “At a time when disinformation is rampant,...

Cannes Films ‘Alpha,’ ‘Nouvelle Vague,’ ‘Colors of Time’ and ‘The Great Arch’ Showcase Growing Maturity of French VFX Sector
Image
France’s VFX industry has grown rapidly, initially driven by a 2020 tax measure that allowed qualifying international productions to claim a full 40% rebate on digital expenses. This incentive revitalized the post-production sector, attracting major projects that, in turn, spurred further development.

Subsequent public initiatives have only accelerated this virtuous cycle, as the government’s France 2030 investment plan looks to widen a talent pool that now boasts 4,500 professionals while the country’s national film board, Cnc, has rolled out a series of VFX bonuses and incentives for local productions as well.

“We’ve seen a dramatic rise in local VFX spending over the past two to three years, helping to grow the sector despite a general international slowdown,” says Cnc director of digital Pauline Augrain. “French productions have really embraced VFX — both artistically and industrially. From that perspective, we’ve clearly reached a new level of maturity.”

This new creative maturity...

Marvel Preview: A Deadpool And Wolverine Villain Gets Her Own Team In X-Men #16 [Exclusive]
Image
A year in, the "From The Ashes" relaunch of the "X-Men" comics hasn't staved off accusations of movie synergy. After the wild Krakoa era of X-Men, "From The Ashes" has been closer to the '90s cartoon norm most expect from these mutants. The main "X-Men" title has also brought in a villain who just debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That would be Cassandra Nova, played in last year's "Deadpool & Wolverine" by Emma Corrin. Created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Cassandra is — essentially — the evil twin sister of Professor Charles Xavier. Since her debut in 2001's "New X-Men" #114, Cassandra has been out to teach her brother and his students one lesson: "E is for Extinction."

Marvel has shared an exclusive preview for "X-Men" #16 with /Film, which follows Cassandra's latest scheme. She's now a leader of the organization 3K. From the Friends of Humanity to Orchis, the...

Adapted from Holly Gramazio’s novel of the same name, The Husbands follows Lauren (Temple), a woman who returns home one night to be greeted by her husband, Michael, a man she’s never met. Apple TV+'s First K-Drama Is A Sci-Fi Series You Need To Check Out
Image
After the success of "Squid Game," it feels like many American streaming services are bolstering their libraries with K-dramas, or live-action South Korean scripted television series. While Netflix has shows like the Western "Song of the Bandits," and Disney+ has the historical drama "Snowdrop," Apple TV+ went sci-fi for its first original K-drama, "Dr. Brain."

Based on the webtoon by Hongjacga, the series focuses on neuroscientist Koh Sewon (Lee Sun-kyun) who loses his family in a tragic accident. Using his experimental technology, Sewon is able to immerse himself in the memories of the deceased by syncing his brain with theirs. Despite the clear risks to his own health and grasp on reality, Sewon uses his brain-syncing tech to investigate what exactly happened to his family. Sewon quickly discovers that the tragedy was no mere accident, uncovering a deadly conspiracy involving his son and wife. As Sewon gets closer to unveiling the full truth,...

The Inquest Of Pilot Pirx | Downfall director heading up new Stanislaw Lem sci-fi film
La Chute (2004)
Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel is heading up The Inquest Of Pilot Pirx – a new film adaptation of a Stanislaw Lem story.

Perhaps best known for his World War II drama Downfall, director Oliver Hirschbiegel is set to make a new sci-fi film based on a short story by Polish author Stanislaw Lem.

First announced last year, The Inquest Of Pilot Pirx is based on Lem’s short story The Inquest, originally published in 1968. Its lengthier title comes from an earlier 1979 Polish adaptation (pictured), also based on the same tale. It tells the story of a routine repair mission to one of Saturn’s rings that has a fascinating additional purpose.

The ship’s crew, led by one Commander Pirx, is a mixture of humans and androids. What follows is essentially a Turing Test in space – if the androids prove to be indistinguishable from humans, then the company that makes them will put them into production.

Oliver Hirschbiegel at an event for Five Minutes of Heaven (2009)
A new science fiction film is set to explore the complex relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, with acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel and writer Peter Harness adapting Stanislaw Lem’s novel “The Inquest of Pilot Pirx.”

The film will follow Commander Pirx and his unique space mission crew, which includes both human and android members. At the heart of the story is a challenging scenario where crew members must identify who is human and who is artificial, while also questioning their own identity.

Hirschbiegel, known for his Academy Award-nominated film “Downfall,” brings extensive experience to the project. His previous works include “Das Experiment” and the Sundance Film Festival award-winning “13 Minutes.” Harness, fresh from his success with the Apple TV+ series “Constellation,” will write the screenplay.

The project promises to be more than a typical science fiction film. Producers Esko Rips and Sam Taylor highlighted the story’s unique approach...

Season 3 of the hit Apple TV+ sci-fi show Foundation is slated for release later this year, and if you haven't seen the first two extraordinary seasons, now would be the perfect time. Apple TV+ has established itself as the new home for brilliant science fiction with recent entries like Severance, Silo, Constellation, andFor All Mankind over the last half-decade. Stephen King-Approved Horror Show With 77% Rt Score Cancelled After Season 1 Cliffhanger Ending
Image
Yet another well-received 2024 show has found itself on the chopping block, and this time it's one that was well-received by Stephen King. The past few years have seen the acclaimed horror author turn his creative endeavors to also sharing his reviews on a variety of films and TV shows, with everything from Apple TV+'s Constellation to The Midwitch Cuckoos getting his approval. The horror genre, in particular, has seen plenty of reviews from King, including Blumhouse's Night Swim and Strange Darling.

Though his voice has helped certain shows find success, many 2024 TV releases have still found themselves cancelled after just one season. Many of them also, unfortunately, left audiences on cliffhanger endings, including the Child's Play sequel show Chucky, the Apple TV+ sci-fi show Sunny and the Star Wars spinoff The Acolyte, while others that left off on mostly closed notes still came to a close, including American Born Chinese.

Netflix canceled the most shows in 2024 (more than any other streamer or network)
Image
Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.

In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

Every TV Show Stephen King Recommended In 2024
Image
Stephen King is one of the most prolific acclaimed authors working today, yet he still finds time to watch — and weigh in on — plenty of TV shows and movies each year. Historically, King's quick takes have lived on X (formerly known as Twitter), but just last month the author made the wise move to shut down his popular account on the Musk-owned site for good. "I quit Twitter," King wrote on Threads in November. "Eleven years, man. It really changed. Grew dark."

When the man behind some of the most messed-up horror stories of the past two centuries calls a website dark, you know something's going wrong. At any rate, King immediately picked up his watercooler conversation where it left off, once again recommending new titles that are challenging, intriguing, and (as his random endorsement of "The Flash" last year reminded us) not always guaranteed to be good. Still, plenty...

Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Series With 90% Rt Score Cancelled Despite Cliffhanger Ending
Image
A one-season sci-fi series has been cancelled by Apple TV+ despite its promising cliffhanger ending. For the past couple of months, there have been relatively few major renewals and cancellations. But with the year rushing to a close, streamers have also been in a sprint to announce some last-minute decisions.

Just this week, FX cancelled the Jeff Bridges action thriller series The Old Man, which did not quite capture the same attention as its buzzy first season after an extended break between episodes. Although it had long been presumed dead, after failing to make a splash with subscribers, Netflix made it official and axed Girls5eva after three seasons. It's not all bad news, with Hulu picking up Tell Me Lies for another run after the young adult adaption grew its audience. However, for one sci-fi standout, it's the end of the road.

Claustrophobic Cinematography: Inside the Dark, Cramped Shooting of ‘September 5’
Image
Swiss director Tim Fehlbaum’s “September 5” takes an unusual approach to the story of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, which ended with the deaths of the 11 athletes and coaches who had been taken hostage. For most of its running time, the Paramount film never leaves the ABC Sports studio where a staff accustomed to broadcasting sporting events tried to cover breaking news that was going out to an estimated 1 billion viewers worldwide.

By focusing on a control room, a small studio and a few offices and hallways, the film situates its big story in a small, crowded pressure cooker — and that’s how Fehlbaum and his longtime cinematographer Markus Förderer shot it, too.

“The art department was building the set on a soundstage, and they asked us, ‘Which walls should we break away? Do you want the ceiling to be open to light from the top?...

Ameri, the new album by the Argentine rapper Duki, has been years in the making. "Brilliant": Stephen King Praises Sci-Fi Horror Adaptation Of Classic Novel
Image
Stephen King praises a sci-fi adaptation of a classic sci-fi horror, which flew under the radar when it was first released. As the year comes to a close, the seminal author has shared some of his TV favorites. They've varied from the Jamie Dornan crime thriller The Tourist to the short-lived Apple TV+ series Constellation. But several of his recommendations tended to have one thing in common.

Whether it was the straightforward horrors of shows like Evil or Teacup or the more subdued unease of a drama like the Billy Crystal-led Before, several of King's TV notables tend to revolve around unsettling situations that would not seem at all out of place in some of his most famous novels. The author's latest recommendation follows along those lines.

Christmas has come early to the Silo this week, with welcome news that Apple’s excellent subterranean saga won’t be coming to an abrupt end any time soon. While we’re still just halfway through the show’s second season on Apple TV+, the streamer announced today that the series has not only been renewed for Season Three, but it’s also been picked up for a fourth and final instalment as well. What's more, both of the seasons are already well into production and will film back to back throughout next year.

“We’ll be shooting all of 2025 into early 2026,” confirms Graham Yost when Empire speaks to the showrunner on the set of Silo at Hoddesdon Studios in Hertfordshire. “There's a big location that we're going to introduce toward the end of Season 3 that plays a very big role in Season 4. 4 shows that were surprisingly good in 2024
Image
Can you believe we are already saying goodbye to the year 2024? I don’t think I’m alone when I say that 2024 has been wild, and even unhinged at times. But it was a wonderful year in the world of entertainment. And that’s what we are focusing on in this post, the positive!

When we think of the best TV had to offer this year, many shows come to mind. However, below we list five shows that we did Not expect to love as much as we did.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Bill Camp in "Presumed Innocent," now streaming on Apple TV+. - Credit: Apple TV+ Presumed Innocent

At the top of my list, there’s Presumed Innocent, available to stream on Apple TV+. I’m a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga, who are both part of the cast in the legal thriller. The cast was not the...

Grotesquerie and the 12 worst shows of 2024 (so far)
Image
As we move closer to the end of 2024, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the worst shows of the year. It has been a fruitful year for TV watchers, particularly those who prefer to stream their series. We’ve seen an interesting mix of new shows and the anticipated return of old favorites. Still, this doesn’t mean they have all been winners.

Before we share which shows have been the most disappointing, let’s give recognition to some of the many series we’ve enjoyed the most. At the top of my list, I have Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Hulu’s The Bear season 3. I know Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also received a lot of attention, as well as the returning Prime Video favorite, The Boys with season 4. Which shows have made it to your favorites list so far?...

New Horror Film Was Made by AI Trained on Werner Herzog's Entire Filmography
Image
The German film legend and famous documentarian Werner Herzog, known for his insightful portrayal of the tragic story of Timothy Treadwell in Grizzly Man, has always been concerned with capturing humanistic stories that highlight the nuances of what it means to be human. Herzog is the last modern creative viewers would expect to make a film using artificial-intelligence-generated content, but together with director Piotr Winiewicz, the thoughtful filmmaker is defying expectations with a film by AI, about AI. Film Constellation has announced via a teaser from Variety that Herzog's upcoming project About A Hero was made using a script co-written by an AI trained on his own work, which he approved.

The fictional AI-driven murder mystery will open the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and follows and is narrated by an investigator played by Werner Herzog. Herzog's character travels to Getunkirchenburg to investigate the mysterious death of a local factory worker named Dorem Clery.

Starfield: How to Find Your Parents in New Atlantis
Image
When first starting Starfield, players will be met with an extensive character creation menu that includes backgrounds and traits. One particular trait called Kid Stuff might catch their eye. This trait allows players to have two living parents who provide constant support throughout the game via messages and conversations.

Not only can players visit them, but they also live in a nice home where they’re welcome anytime. However, the only possible downside is that they’ll have to send 2% of their credits back to them every week.

Visiting Your Parents in Starfield’s New Atlantis Visiting Pioneer Tower has become a lot easier after in-game maps were added.

The Kid Stuff trait in Starfield is ideal for those who enjoy the idea of having family in-game, and adding to the roleplaying experience, even if it means losing a bit of money. When was the last time a Bethesda game protagonist had living parents?...

‘Slingshot’ Movie Ending Explained And Summary: Was Zoe Real? Is John Dead Or Alive?
Image
The science fiction psychological thriller film Slingshot is a testament to a half-baked idea being forced into a full-length feature film, which ultimately fails to deliver in any sense. The plot in this disappointing space thriller follows an astronaut named John, who is currently aboard the Odyssey 1 spacecraft, headed towards the moon of Saturn, Titan. There have been countless films and shows previously that have dealt with hallucinations during outer space expeditions, and Slingshot really does not have anything unique to say. Ultimately, Slingshot feels to have been made only with the uncertain ending in mind, which becomes the only talking point of the film per se.

Spoiler Alert

What is the film about?

Slingshot begins with the protagonist, John, waking up from a deep slumber as a robotic female voice welcomes him back to consciousness. John is actually aboard the Odyssey 1 spacecraft, currently traveling in outer space, as...

Outer Space May Be Infinite — but Sets and Budgets Aren’t
Image
Scott Kelly, the astronaut who until recently held the American record for longest spaceflight, spent at least some of his time aboard the Iss thinking about “Breaking Bad.” NASA will set up calls for the astronauts in orbit with interesting people they want to talk to; so, unlike all “Breaking Bad” fans stuck on Earth, Kelly was able to talk with Vince Gilligan and Brian Cranston — and, as it turns out, director/producer Michelle MacLaren, who was in the room and would remember Kelly when she set out to direct the first two episodes of Apple TV+’s “Constellation.”

Brought on as an advisor to the Noomi Rapace thriller, Kelly sat in Zoom meetings with the “Constellation” production team and also traveled to set to help keep even the zero-gravity scenes grounded in reality. He still has his Soyuz re-entry manual, which he gave to the crew, “so when Jo...

Horror comedy series Widow's Bay receives series order from Apple TV+
Image
Another day, another small-town mayor refusing to acknowledge that his town could be in grave danger. That's the gist of newly ordered-to-series Widow's Bay, an upcoming 10-episode horror-comedy set for Apple TV+.

1428 Elm has learned that the show will be created by Katie Dippold, best known for writing The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Filmmaker Hiro Murai (Atlanta) will direct the pilot episode.

Apple didn't share much else about Widow's Bay just yet, unfortunately, except that it will be produced in-house by Apple Studios and the series is set in a cursed New England town. As mentioned above, something supernatural starts to threaten town residents but the mayor refuses to believe anything is wrong. Sounds like maybe the mayor from Amity Island relocated.

Dippold is credited as the showrunner and creator of the new series, which she also executive produces. Murai will executive produce as well, alongside Carver Karaszewski and Claudia Shin.

Carmen Chaplin’s directorial feature debut benefits from unprecedented access to the Chaplin estate, thanks to the participation of the Chaplin Office, the Chaplin family and MK2 films. Dark Matter's Season 2 Renewal Makes Apple TV+'s Other 71%-Rated Sci-Fi Failure Even More Disappointing
Image
While Dark Matter season 2's renewal is excellent news for the show, it does also bring to mind a similar Apple TV+ sci-fi show, but one that wasn't afforded the same opportunity to continue its story beyond a single season. The changes made to Blake Crouch's Dark Matter book to create the live-action adaptation created the chance for the multiverse saga to continue beyond the events of the source material. The other show in question wasn't an adaptation, but it was similar to Dark Matter in other ways.

The success of Dark Matter means it can be added to the impressive ongoing collection of Apple TV+ sci-fi shows. While it's currently unclear how long the show will run, its premise allows for the possibility of a multi-season story if Dark Matter season 2 is also well-received. Unfortunately, not all of Apple TV+'s sci-fi projects are quite as triumphant as Dark Matter,...
