Rob Lowe Returns to Filming in Los Angeles With ‘The Musical’ Opposite Gillian Jacobs and Will Brill
Image
Rob Lowe, who went viral in March for a fiery take on the challenges of shooting projects in Los Angeles, has returned to the city to shoot an independent film titled The Musical.

The beloved performer will star opposite Gillian Jacobs and Tony Award winner Will Brill in the dark comedy for director Giselle Bonilla and writer Alexander Heller. Filming is underway in Los Angeles, which is hoping for an uptick in local productions thanks to tax incentives, particularly for independent features, as previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The Musical casts Brill as a frustrated playwright and middle school theater teacher who finds out that his ex-girlfriend (Jacobs) has started dating his nemesis, the school’s principal (Lowe). As a result, he hatches a plan to ruin the principal’s chances of winning the blue ribbon of academic excellence by secretly producing the most inappropriate musical imaginable. The story...

Why Netflix Canceled Rob Lowe's Unstable After Two Seasons
Image
TV can seem fickle at times, particularly in the streaming era. One moment, you're binge-watching your new favorite show, and the next, it's gone. Plenty of shows have been canceled before their time was up, but knowing that this form of entertainment is a business and these decisions are made with business in mind never makes the pill any easier to swallow. Case in point, those who enjoyed Rob Lowe's "Unstable" on Netflix are surely not happy to know that season 3 isn't happening.

"Unstable" centers on universally admired eccentric biotech entrepreneur Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), and season 2 sees him lay out a series of challenges and mind games for his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe) to see if he can become the heir to the Dragon empire. Lowe co-created and co-starred in the show alongside his real-life son, adding a meta layer of reality to the whole thing. The...

Now, Pratt will executive produce the new Prime Video series, titled God's Country. Interestingly, it seems that the actor's role in the project will be entirely behind the scenes.

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, God's Country is a "darkly satirical tale of family and greed, with Shakespearean roots." The series will follow a ruthless real estate tycoon whose ambitions of gentrifying the heart of America end up ultimately threatening his empire and involving his family...

Chris Pratt Executive Producing New Dark Comedy Series In Development At Amazon
Image
Chris Pratt will be executive producing a new dark comedy series in development at Amazon from the creator of the Netflix series Unstable. Some of Pratt's best movies and TV shows have fallen into the realm of comedy, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and his time on Parks and Recreation. The actor has a decorated career that spans beyond these projects, too, including his role in Netflix's The Electric State adaptation, and his upcoming role in the sci-fi thriller Mercy.

However, Deadlinereports that Pratt will be going behind-the-scenes as an executive producer for God's Country, a dark comedy being developed by Amazon MGM Studios. Created by John Owen Lowe, best known for the Netflix comedy Unstable, God's Country follows a family described as having "Shakespearean roots," whose real estate mogul patriarch sets about gentrifying "the heart of America." Although 9-1-1: Lone Star has answered its last call, Rob Lowe is ready to get back in the field as Captain Owen Strand.

The 6x Golden Globe nominee recently addressed his potential return to the character on the upcoming Nashville spinoff, for which his brother Chad Lowe serves as a co-executive producer and director.

'Lopez Vs. Lopez' Canceled at NBC After 3 Seasons
Image
Popular comedian George Lopez has been starring alongside his daughter, Mayan Lopez, in the NBC multi-camera sitcom, Lopez Vs. Lopez, for the past three seasons. Unfortunately for fans of the series, its most recent season finale was also a series one, as NBC has officially canceled the series ahead of NBCUniversal's Upfronts presentation on May 12, 2025, in New York City. It was the last of the network's comedies to receive word of its future prospects, with Night Court also getting the axe earlier in the day.

Lopez Vs. Lopez is one of several sitcoms the stand-up comedian has created and starred in over the years. Prior to this, Lopez also starred in his eponymous ABC series, George Lopez, the one-season FX sitcom Saint George, Lopez for TV Land (which ran for two seasons), and even had a brief stint as a late-night host for two seasons on TBS. Unstable Preview: Watch the First 5 Minutes of the Rob Lowe Comedy
Image
Let’s not dance around the truth: Since the death of his wife, tech genius Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) has gotten a lot more idiosyncratic than usual. This is easily apparent in the opening minutes of Unstable, which introduce us to Ellis as he processes the death of his beloved wife through… dance.

What? Don’t most geniuses wake up in their scenic, hillside Los Angeles mansions and have a solo dance party to “Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)” before work?

Unfortunately, Ellis’ eccentricities are beginning to affect his biotechnology business, which is why his CFO Anna (Sian Clifford) calls on his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe), who had been working as a flute teacher in New York City, to bring some normalcy to the Dragon company.

Lowe is no stranger to on-screen “silly dancing,” he tells Tudum of his fancy footwork. “You can Google Chris Traeger dancing,” Lowe says, referring to his...

Kate Hudson wants Running Point season 2 to happen (and so do we)
Image
Running Point made its debut on Netflix on Feb. 27, and the series starring Kate Hudson was an immediate slam dunk. The actress and singer stars in the comedy from Mindy Kaling as a reformed party girl who takes over the family business as its president. That business? The most lucrative professional men's basketball team in Los Angeles. No pressure at all for a woman!

On top of an incredible creative team behind the scenes, including Kaling's hilarious frequent collaborators Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen, Running Point features an exquisite ensemble cast that leans on the unique talents of Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Justin Theroux, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, and so many more.

The ‘Heartstopper’ Season 4 Renewal Conundrum: Parsing Netflix’s Data Dump For Answers On Delay As ‘No Good Deed’ Also Awaits Pickup Decision
Image
In May 2022, exactly a month after the first season of Heartstopper premiered on Netflix, the coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama received a rare two-season renewal by the streamer. Almost five months after Season 3, the last of the two installments under that deal, dropped on Oct. 3, there is still no word from Netflix on the future of Heartstopper as another half-hour series, No Good Deed, also awaits a renewal decision two and a half months after its Netflix debut.

The streamer’s semi-annual What We Watched viewership data report released today provides more context to the series’ performance beyond Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankers that may be factoring into the renewal conversations.

Season 3 of Heartstopper amassed 10.9M views from its Oct. 3 release until the end of 2024 to rank #130 among all of Netflix’s programs from June to December last year, according to the report. The show spent two weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10, peaking at #4, vs.

Netflix makes decisions on which shows to renew or cancel based on performance vs. cost. The streamer’s latest data dump gives a glimpse into the numbers behind some of its highest-profile cancellations.

The company launched its latest What We Watched report, which gives viewership numbers for shows between July and December 2024.

Kaos, the Greek mythology comedy starring Jeff Goldblum, was Netflix’s most-watched canceled series in the second half of last year.

The series scored 20.3M views in that six-month period. Kaos, which comes from The End of the F*cking World creator Charlie Covell, started off relatively strong with 3.4M views in its first couple of days before adding 5.9M views in its first full week on the service between September 2 and 8.

Chris Pratt Gushes Over Patrick Schwarzenegger Hanging Dong on ‘The White …

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Chris Pratt got an eyeful of brother-in-law Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Of course, so did everyone tuning in to The White Lotus Season 3 and seeing the actor’s frontal nudity scene.

But we can all understand that it’s a little different for members of his family.

After his parents shared their statements, his A-list actor brother-in-law is offering a pretty blunt appraisal.

Our society is very weird about nudity and doubly so about male nudity. The ensuing awkwardness means that, sometimes, the best response is to crack a joke.

4 Netflix shows from 2024 that shouldn't have happened
Image
Sometimes I feel like it's so obvious to us viewers that a television show is bad or unncessary, and we wonder how it honestly could have been approved and made. Especially with all the hoops writers, producers, and the team have to go through to get a season order sometimes. But you know, sometimes there's just some bad TV that comes out, and we live with it. Here's 4 Netflix shows from 2024 that we think shouldn't have happened.

John P. Fleenor/Netflix © 2023 Unstable season 2

Not to be rude, but Unstable as a show in the first place shouldn't have happened. And the series definitely should not have gotten a season 2 at Netflix. Right from the start, this comedy was not funny at all. And to be quite frank, pretty boring. I'm a big fan of Rob Lowe so I got excited about this project, especially since the actor stars in it with his real-life son.

Starring the real-life father and son duo of Rob and John Owen Lowe, Unstable concerns unassuming Jackson (John Owen Lowe) who must reconnect with his eccentric tech-mogul father (Rob Lowe) and help save him and his company from disaster. A more humorous take on the rich family in distress formula perfected in HBO's Succession, Unstable shines because of the undeniable chemistry between the two leads and its unique take on the workplace comedy genre.

Unstable was something of an unlikely hit after it debuted in 2023, and it was able to score a season 2 renewal amid the turmoil of the Hollywood strikes. The sophomore outing was a continuation of the hilarious themes found in season 1, as Jackson and Ellis' tumultuous relationship took a...

Netflix Cancels Unstable, Continuing Long Streak of Axing Beloved Shows
Image
Another one bites the dust at Netflix!

The streaming giant announced today that the Rob Lowe sitcom Unstable has been canceled after two seasons.

It’s been a tough year for Lowe, whose 9-1-1: Lone Star recently received the ax from Fox.

But when all is said and done, Rob Lowe still leads a pretty enviable life. So the real losers in this situation are, as always, the folks who continue to shell out for increasingly pricey Netflix subscriptions.

The situation has us feeling a bit like Charlie Brown. In this analogy, Netflix is Lucy, and exciting new content is the football that’s cruelly pulled away each time we make our eager approach.

At this point, it feels like every longtime Netflix subscriber has a horror story about getting hooked on a show just to see it unceremoniously axed after one or two seasons.

Netflix Cancels Rob Lowe's Unstable After 2 Seasons
Image
In a blow to workplace comedy fans, Netflix has decided to bring another one of its series to a halt. The streaming giant will not be renewing Unstable for a third season, according to recent reports. Created by and starring Rob Lowe, a beloved member of the Brat Pack, and his son Owen Lowe, the show struggled to gain traction among Netflix viewers, which led to the cancelation.

Unstable centers around the eccentric and chaotic world of a biotechnology company run by the charismatic but narcissistic-adjacent Ellis Dragon (Lowe) and his introverted son Jackson (Owen), who only arrives on the scene in order to save his father from spiraling and sending the company in ruins as he mourns the loss of his wife. The series explores the complicated relationship shared by the father-son duo and satirizes the dysfunctional workplace. Lowe and Owen act as executive producers alongside Victor Fresco, the...

Netflix Cancels Comedy Series After Season 2 Finale Went Political
Image
Netflix is pulling the plug on another series after a two-season run. The decision comes nearly three months after the second season dropped on the streaming platform.

Per Variety, Netflix has canceled Unstable after two seasons. The workplace comedy series, which co-starred Rob Lowe and his real-life son, John Owen Lowe, originally premiered on Netflix in March 2023. Season 2 debuted on Aug. 1, and the future of the series has since been unclear. The show getting the boot means that the big political cliffhanger in the finale will not be resolved.

Rob Lowe's Comedy 'Unstable' Toppled at Netflix After Two Seasons
Image
The biotechnology company Dragon is officially closing its doors for good. After two seasons, Netflix has opted not to move forward with Unstable, the workplace comedy series starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe. Executive produced by the father-son duo alongside Emmy-nominated Mad About You producer Victor Fresco, the show cast the younger Lowe as the socially shy son of a successful, admired, and, for lack of a better word, unstable biotech company CEO who takes a job at his dad's research facility to keep him from spiraling after his wife's death. Mixing humor and family drama with some inspiration from Rob and John's real-life relationship, it forced both father and son to navigate personal challenges to avoid disaster and ultimately help the world.

‘Unstable’ Canceled After Two Seasons at Netflix
Image
“Unstable,” the comedy starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, has been canceled after two seasons on Netflix.

The workplace comedy premiered on Netflix on March 30, 2023, and its second season came on Aug. 1, 2024. It followed Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, the CEO and founder of a biotechnology company who struggled after the death of his wife. His estranged son Jackson, who played Lowe’s real-life son, joins the company despite pursuing a career playing the flute. He also helps his father with his mental health and reconnects with him. The show leaned into the meta-ness of the Lowes playing an eccentric father and high-strung son.

“It took doing a TV show with each other for Rob and I to re-explore some of the deeper parts of our interpersonal relationship, so we figured, why not make it so that Ellis and Jackson have to literally play characters in order...

Unstable is not coming back for a third season.

On Friday (October 11), Deadline announced that the comedy series starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe had been canceled after two seasons.

Along with starring in the show, Rob, 60, and John Owen, 28, also co-created it alongside Victor Fresco and served as executive producers and writers.

Keep reading to find out more…Unstable takes place in a biological research company, where a son with social problems is forced to work for the company founded by his father, an extremely eccentric and exotic man to save him from disaster.

The show was first released in November 2023. Season 2, which was released in August, failed to break into the Netflix Top 10, meaning that it drew less than 1.4M views in its opening weekend and fewer than 1.3M views in its first full week.

‘Unstable,’ Starring Rob Lowe, Canceled at Netflix
Image
Netflix has canceled its comedy series Unstable after two seasons.

The series, co-created by and starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, debuted its second season on Aug. 1. The show didn’t make the streamer’s internal top 10 rankings in the weeks following its release; the 10th-ranked show for its premiere week had 1.4 million views (hours viewed divided by running time). Unstable also didn’t show up in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for August.

The show’s first season, which premiered in March 2023, made one appearance in Netflix’s own rankings (which were determined by total viewing hours at that time) and two in the Nielsen streaming charts.

More to come.

Netflix is killing Ellis Dragon’s political aspirations, cancelling Unstable after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

‘Unstable’ Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Netflix is not proceeding with a third season of Unstable, its comedy series starring and co-created/executive produced by Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe.

The news, which I hear has been relayed to the crew, is not surprising because Season 2 — which debuted August 1 — failed to break into the Netflix Top 10, meaning that it drew fewer than 1.4M views in its opening weekend and fewer than 1.3M views in its first full week. Netflix executives base their renewal decisions on viewing vs. cost.

According to sources, the producers had already been quietly shopping the show. As Deadline has reported, finding a new home for a Netflix original is tricky as it comes with a lot of limitations, making a linear network the most realistic option. This is what happened with One Day At A Time, which moved to Pop post-cancellation, with That ’90s Show producers believed to...

Image
Exclusive: UTA has signed actor and writer John Owen Lowe for representation in all areas, Deadline has learned.

Lowe recently co-created, wrote, starred in and executive produced the Netflix comedy series Unstable, alongside his father Rob Lowe and Victor Fresco. The series is loosely inspired by his relationship on social media with his dad. Season 2 of Unstable premiered on Aug. 1.

Lowe recently starred in and produced the thriller Grace Point for director Rory Karpf. The film marked his debut as a lead star in a feature film. Grace Point follows a young man faced with addiction who gets lost in the woods on his way to a remote drug rehab center and wrestles with the locals as well as his own personal demons. What to watch on Netflix this week (Aug. 26-30): Adam Sandler, Worst Ex Ever, and more
Image
It's the last full week of August, a month that has brought so many great new Netflix shows and movies. Throughout the past month, the streaming service has released the latest seasons of fan favorite shows like The Umbrella Academy, Unstable, and Emily in Paris, while also debuting hit movies and docuseries such as The Union and American Murder: Laci Peterson.

Even though this week's a bit on the lighter side when it comes to Netflix new releases (there are only 10 new titles hitting the streamer this week), there are still plenty of can't-miss movies and shows primed to fill up our watch lists. Following last week's explosion of AMC series, this week's the perfect week to catch up on what you've missed and/or try out some new Netflix originals.

Going into the last week of August, a number of carryover titles remain in the top 10, from a number...

Quick Links Better Off Ted Is a Workplace Comedy Sitcom That Makes You Think Better Off Ted Was a Good Show That Couldn't Go On

One must learn to laugh from one's daily life in order to cope. Thus, the genre of workplace comedy was born. Shows such as The Office, The It Crowd, Superstore, and more have been entertaining audiences for a few decades already. But the dated humor of such shows as the acclaimed American remake of The Office has had fans yearning for new material. If there are not enough jokes, it becomes boring and reminds one too much of real life; too many jokes and it can become cringy.

Most recently, the Netflix series Unstable has been the talk of the internet. In this intergenerational workplace sitcom, Jackson Dragon, played by John Owen Lowe, must save his eccentric father Ellis (played by his own father and...
