Hulu New Releases: August 2023
Image
We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.

The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.

That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Juno Temple joins ‘Venom 3’ at Sony
Image
Though details about the film are still cloaked in a black, interplanetary goo, there’s word from the Sony camp that Juno Temple will star opposite Tom Hardy in the third installment of the slightly deranged McU-adjacent “Spider-Man”-related trilogy. Michelle Williams was the romantic lead, Anne Weying, in the first two, which concluded with Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom and going their separate ways. It is unclear who the 33-year-old London-born Temple will be playing in the new installment, but Deadline reported her involvement.

Also, the new chapter in the “Venom” story will be Kelly Marcel’s feature directing debut. Marcel co-wrote the first “Venom” with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker for director Ruben Fleischer in 2018, and the slightly unhinged superhero pic went on to gross over $850 million worldwide. Marcel was the lone credited screenwriter on the sequel, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” directed by Andy Serkis, which went...

Jessica Biel in Candy (2022)
Hulu New Releases: May 2022
Jessica Biel in Candy (2022)
There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.

Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

On the movie side of things, May will welcome The Valet on May...

Official Trailer for NYC Indie 'Avenues' Directed by Michael Angarano
"Days like today, and meeting you - that's happiness, my friend." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama titled Avenues, which marks the feature directorial debut of Brooklyn-born actor Michael Angarano. This premiered at a festival back in 2017 but is just now getting a VOD release almost two years later. Set in New York City, Angarano also stars in this film as Max. On his birthday following the suicide of his brother, Max and his friend Peter wander the wintry streets (or the "avenues") of Manhattan contemplating life, livelihood, and what it means to be an adult. Like most indie dramas. Also starring Ari Graynor, Adelaide Clemens, John Robinson, and Greg Vrotsos. It might be a worthwhile little film. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Angarano's Avenues, direct from YouTube: On his 25th birthday, Max attempts to distance himself ...

Lost Child movie review: It’s all for you, Tatterdamalion
In 2012, Ramaa Mosely made the movie The Brass Teapot, a fairy tale allegory about a magic teapot that gives a couple money whenever they hurt themselves. With Lost Child, Mosely has created another modern day myth, and it doesn’t hurt that she keeps casting my favorite actresses. Fern (Leven Rambin) comes home from the Army looking for her brother Billy (Taylor John Smith). Before she finds him, she discovers Cecil (Landon Edwards) in the woods and reluctantly agrees to take him in while they look for his family. As soon as she does, Fern begins getting sick and her […]

Full Trailer for Gripping Thriller 'Lost Child' Directed by Ramaa Mosley
"How is it you came to live out here in these woods?" Breaking Glass Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a thriller titled Lost Child, formerly titled Tatterdemalion when it first premiered at a few small film festivals last year. Lost Child, a new film by filmmaker Ramaa Mosley (of The Brass Teapot), is about an army veteran who returns home and finds an abandoned young boy in the woods. As she searches for clues to the boy's identity, she discovers the local folklore about a spirit which comes in the form of a child. Oooh. Leven Rambin stars, with Taylor John Smith, Jim Parrack, Toni Chritton Johnson, and Landon Edwards. This looks like a slow burn horror film masquerading as a dramatic thriller, which is intriguing. Here's the official trailer (+ two posters) for Ramaa Mosley's Lost Child, from YouTube (via THR): Lost Child follows an army veteran,...

Cristin Milioti in Trailer for Quirky Romantic Comedy 'It Had to Be You'
"I always thought that by the time I got married, I would be different." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted a trailer for an indie romantic comedy called It Had to Be You, about a woman who freaks out when she learns her boyfriend is going to propose to her. Actress Cristin Milioti (seen in The Wolf of Wall Street, The Brass Teapot, "Fargo", "The Mindy Project") stars, with Dan Soder, Halley Feiffer, Kate Simses, Erica Sweany, Mark Gessner and Rachel York. This is definitely very quirky, but there's also some charm to it, mostly because Cristin Milioti is quite talented and it's nice to see her in a fun role like this. The trailer ends rather abruptly, like there's more going on - but I guess we have to see the film to find out what. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Sasha Gordon's It Had to Be You,...

Watch: Juno Temple Trades Prostitution For Photography In Trailer For 'Safelight'
Juno Temple doesn't tend to discriminate when it comes to her movie roles. She's appeared in everything from Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" to William Friedkin's delightfully sleazy "Killer Joe" to this year's underrated period piece "Far From The Madding Crowd." But she also tends to jump into an occasional indie that comes along, which means there are movies like "The Brass Teapot" and "Magic Magic," scattered across her filmography and "Safelight" looks like another to fit that category of forgettable films. Co-staring Evan Peters, Christine Lahti, and Ariel Winter, the movie tells the unlikely story of a high school kid who whisks away a prostitute from her dangerous pimp, and shows her the beauty of photography. Uh...here's the official synopsis:  The paths of three desperate individuals perilously cross in a dusty desert town. Charles (Evan Peters) is a high school senior with physical challenges,...

Sundance 2015: ‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’ a claustrophobic tale of ego and wits under duress
Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s “The Stanford Prison Experiment” Image Courtesy of the Sundance Institute

The Stanford Prison Experiment

Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez

Written by Tim Talbott

USA, 2015

Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s The Stanford Prison Experiment is a darkly comedic dramatization of a frightening real life experiment conducted in 1971 by Dr. Phillip Zimbardo. It spun wildly out of control over the course of just 5 days. Two dozen Ivy league men are drawn to the experiment for money. Screened for good mental health and randomly assigned positions as guards or prisoners, conformity is set to be examined under the the microscope in the basement of prestigious Stanford. The experiment starts out informally as they are given uniforms and plopped into their cells and guard rooms. It soon spirals into degrading mental abuse and physical deprivation. That this happened is not in question but how systematic torture ensued couldn’t have been anticipated.

Horatio Sanz, Matt Walsh Get The Riot Act: ‘A Better You’ At Sbiff – Hot Clip

Lobbyists against onscreen smoking could have a friend in comedic actor Andrew Daly (Comedy Central’s Review), or at least his persnickety neighbor character who is trying to clean up the streets in Matt Walsh’s second directorial comedy A Better You. The film follows Dr. Ron (Brian Huskey), a Hollywood quack hypnotherapist. The only thing worse than Dr. Ron’s methods are his disrespectful patients who loiter around the neighborhood as seen in this clip. The film, which was co-written by Huskey and Walsh, makes its world premiere today at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival at 4:40pm at the Metro 4, with screenings tomorrow at 8:10am and Monday, Feb. 2, at 10:20pm. The film is produced by Kirk Roos (The Brass Teapot, High Road, Painkillers) and his Badlands Features label. Joe Lo Truglio, Erinn Hayes, Rob Huebel, Morgan Walsh, Natasha Leggero, Reid Scott and Mo Gaffney also star.

Michael Angarano and Juno Temple in The Brass Teapot (2012)
The curious case of Rotten Tomatoes and 'The Brass Teapot'
Michael Angarano and Juno Temple in The Brass Teapot (2012)
A little over a week ago, I got an e-mail from Stuart Zakim, a publicist I've heard from a few times in the past, and I scanned it, as I try to scan everything that hits my e-mail box. Here's where I'm going to give you a look at how the sausage gets made. For the most part, I write based on instinct and time and opportunity. I would like to write ten times the material I write at the moment, because there are that many things I'd like to share with you. There are that many things worth discussing. And every time I feel the moment to discuss something slip by, and I don't get a chance to write about something, it drives me crazy. So one of the things I try not to get pulled into is what I like to call "other people's priorities." That sounds heartless,...

The HeyUGuys Instant Watching Guide – March 3rd 2014
This week it finally happened, Lovefilm is no more, it has now been completely consumed by its Amazon overlords and is now known as Amazon Prime and something that operates totally through your Amazon account should you have one.

At first this was a baffling experience, there was rumours of a lot more new content being added and when you logged into the Ios app for Lovefilm/Amazon post switchover, suddenly you were faced with A Lot of new content, things like Aliens, Congo, Cujo, Invaders from Mars and lots of HBO shows including Eastbound and Down, Enlightened and the Sopranos as well as Community in the ‘Recently Added’ section.

Of course this was too good to be true and you could add these to your watchlist but then not actually watch them. So when things calmed down and you logged back in, these titles it turned out were part...

Mr. Halfyard: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love 2013
The theme of the year (if it can ever be boiled down to just one thing) is that "Greed is no longer Good, it is complicated." Perhaps this is just fall out from filmmaking projects that likely were conceived at about the low-point of the world economic meltdown of 2008-2009. Nevertheless, the nefarious means of acquiring wealth and fame in pursuit of becoming the 1% was featured in nearly a dozen films where those willing to go through hell to 'get theirs' was examined in various modes:  The Counselor, American Hustle, The Bling Ring, The Wolf of Wall St., Spring Breakers, Pain and Gain, and to a lesser extent, The Great Gatsby, Elysium and The Brass Teapot.  As per usual, most of the good movies...

Billy Magnussen Has Tested for Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey
Cinquante nuances de Grey (2015)
After Charlie Hunnam dropped out of playing Christian Grey in Universal's Fifty Shades of Grey earlier this month, the role has quickly become one of the hottest parts in town. Today, we have word that actor Billy Magnussen tested on Friday, along with Jamie Dornan (The Fall).

Both actors read with director Sam Taylor-Johnson and star Dakota Johnson, who is playing Anastasia Steele. Jamie Dornan was mentioned as a contender last week, along with True Blood star Alexander Skarsg&#229rd. We also reported last week that Fran&#231ois Arnaud (The Borgias) was in contention as well. Scott Eastwood (Fury, Texas Chainsaw 3D) has also tried out for the coveted part.

Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing from an adapted screenplay by Kelly Marcel, which is being polished by Patrick Marber. We reported last month that production is scheduled to begin in Vancouver next month, although it isn't known if shooting will be...

Ethical Musings and Solid Performances Polish an Otherwise Dull "Brass Teapot
Similar in theme to the concept of Richard Kelly's The Box, which theorized whether a couple would risk misfortune on others in exchange for a fortune for themselves, The Brass Teapot asks a slightly more interesting question: how much pain would you endure if it meant you could be filthy, stinking rich? With a magical teapot that trades personal injury for large suddenly appearing installments of cash, a young couple milk the premise for all its worth in a story that relies a bit too heavily on coincidence and takes no real chances with the boundless opportunities its story offers.  Stars Juno Temple and Michael Angarano make The Brass Teapot easy to watch, but in the end it's all a bit too predictable with an ending  that has a little shock value but few surprises.

'Safety Last', 'Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Stoker' and More on DVD and Blu-ray Today
Before Sunrise / Before Sunset At only $7.99 if you don't own Before Sunrise and Before Sunset you can't pass this deal up. Yes, they may become available on Blu-ray soon, but at $7.99 is it really that much of an expense not to own two of the greatest romance films everc Buy 'em both, watch 'em and head on out to check out Before Midnight and feel good all over.

Safety Last! (Criterion Collection) I already wrote up my review of Criterion's Blu-ray for Harold Lloyd's Safety Last! (read it here) so most of you should already know I highly recommend this title. This is a silent film right up there with the likes of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin's best. Film lovers won't regret the purchase.

Marketa Lazarova (Criterion Collection) I also reviewed Criterion's Blu-ray for Frantisek Vlacil's Marketa Lazarova, which isn't a title for everyone. This is...

'Jack the Giant Slayer'

Rotten Tomatoes: 52% Rotten

Storyline: Bryan Singer's update on the classic fairy tale has the titular farmhand (Nicholas Hoult) unwittingly reigniting an ancient war between humans and giants when his magical beanstalk bridges their two worlds. Magic Magic Trailer Has Creepy Michael Cera Torment Juno Temple in Chile
Chilean director Sebastián Silva (The Maid, Old Cats, Life Kills Me) makes his English language debut with this psychological thriller featuring intimidation, hypnosis and maybe just a bit of overwrought villainy on the part of Michael Cera. Maria Full of Grace star Catalina Sandino and Emily "Babydoll" Browning also appear in supporting roles. The film played (quietly) at Sundance this year, and while it never secured a theatrical release, it is coming to DVD/VOD in August.  Personally, I'm still waiting for Juno Temple to become a bonafide star, as the right part has eluded her even as she brings a significant freshness to whatever project she turns up in. None of these (Killer Joe, Cracks, The Brass Teapot, Dirty Girl, Mr. Nobody) got any mainstream notice. While I...

Indie film The Brass Teapot will be making an appearance in Austin on Thursday, May 23. Ramaa Mosley makes her feature directorial debut with the movie, basing it off of her 2007 short of the same name. Tim Macy scripted both the short and the feature.

It stars Michael Angarano (Sky High, Snow Angels), Juno Temple (Dirty Girl, Killer Joe) and Houston native Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls). it originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012, and hasn't screened in Austin previously.

The Brass Teapot follows John (Angarano) and Alice (Temple), a young newlywed couple struggling to make ends meet. Feeling down on their luck, they happen upon an antiques store where Alice discovers a unique brass teapot. It appears to be just another junk-store find until the couple discovers that the teapot can give them all the money they desire -- in exchange for hurting themselves.

Vowing to stop once they hit their first million,...

Juno Temple Smokes Money in This Freakalicious Poster for 'The Brass Teapot'
What if you found a magical object that would give you riches but didn't require a genie or a leprechaun, rather simple, self-inflicted pain? Would you hit yourself in the hand with a hammer to get a couple hundred bucks? Would you get a tooth pulled without any anesthetic to buy a new car? That's the question The Brass Teapot asks. A mystical device that gives money in exchange for violence may sound like the setup for a horror movie, but Ramma Mosley's feature film debut is actually a comedy, though obviously with a bit of a twisted sense of humor. It stars Juno Temple and Michael Angarano as a young couple in love but not a job between them. They hope to make some money by finding a random antique that might be worth something on The Antiques Roadshow and wind...

"I can't say anything about [Divergent] because you know how Hollywood is - it's very secretive these days. I do have a movie coming out called I, Frankenstein where I play the monster Frankenstein which I think is quite exciting. It's the monster Frankenstein in the modern age; he's looking for his soul, for love and his place in life and he uses kali stick fighting to do it [laughs]. It's a movie about good and evil, gargoyles, demons and it's something you've never seen before. It's going to be interesting." Juno Temple was also on a promotional kick but for her own film, The Brass Teapot. In an interview with Iar, the actress did, quickly, share...

That's the great thing about the Sin City movies. Each little slot is incredibly meaningful, and each character has their own moment. That was such an exciting thing to be a part of, because each story is almost like it's own little story within itself. Also, to...

The Brass Teapot Cutesy Conceit is a Struggle
Michael Angarano and Juno Temple in The Brass Teapot (2012)
Even The Twilight Zone would have struggled with the cutesy conceit of The Brass Teapot, a greed-corrupts cautionary tale about a financially strapped married couple whose life is destroyed by a teapot that spews cash any time they hurt themselves or others. For broke John (Michael Angarano) and Alice (Juno Temple), the ancient kettle is the answer to their prayers, though the burns, broken limbs, and S&M whipping fun that accompany it soon give way to graver trouble, as the teapot shows greater interest in not just physical but emotional pain—a fact that John and Alice ignore even after being cautioned by a Chinese sage who knows the object's 2,000-year-old history. He's one of many stereotypes trotted out by director Ramaa Mosley's fable, which also serves up cari...

Twentysomethings John (Michael Angarano) and Alice (Juno Temple) are desperately struggling to get by. Alice, voted “most likely to succeed” in high school, finds that her degree in art history has resulted in unemployment, while John gets fired from his low-paying telemarketing job. Wandering into an antiques shop after
