Protests, Politics & K-Pop? Exo’s Mv Once Accused Of Influencing Chilean Youth (Photo Credit – X)
In 2019, Chile was undergoing a series of protests from the youth against the alleged malpractices by the government. 2019 was also the year when K-pop group Exo released its new song Obsession from the album of the same name. When you read these two instances, you would think they are not connected right? But you would be wrong. The Chilean government accused Exo, and K-pop of messing with the young minds and leading them down the paths of protest and causing political unrest in the country.
Why was Exo accused by the Chilean government?
According to a Dazed Digital report, an internal government document circulated at the time accused “foreign influence” of stirring the flames of anti-government demonstrations in Santiago. Strangely enough, it singled out K-pop content as a vehicle for dissent, and even...

The Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival has always been a space for cinema that pushes boundaries, disrupts worldviews, and leaves a slippery residue of viscera on the screen—during a festival otherwise dominated by predominantly highbrow, highly serious selections. As the fest turns 50 this September, the program’s disregard for good taste, social norms, and any semblance of staying inside the box shows zero signs of changing.
It’s no wonder TIFF’s Midnight Madness/Strange Cuts program was recently ranked first in Dread Central’s definitive list of the 90 Best Genre Fests on Earth (in a three-way tie with Fantasia and Sitges, respectively).
To prepare for this year’s lineup, I sat down with TIFF Midnight Madness lead programmer Peter Kuplowsky to break down the salacious selections—from the nastiest and most shocking titles to the grim, macabre, and everything in between. Kuplowsky is partly...

Midnight Madness, it’s almost your time. The Toronto International Film Festival has today announced the lineup of its “signature slate of wicked wonders that are sure to delight and disturb the festival’s devoted and raucous late-night crowd.” One of the most beloved aspects of the festival, the annual assortment of tricks and treats is a feast for the genre-devoted and generally curious alike.
Midnight Madness will open with the Canadian premiere of Matt Johnson’s Toronto-set “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.” The film is based on Johnson’s cult “Viceland” series, and is billed as a “hysterical, death-defying time-travel caper.” The section will close with “Dead Lover,” a “zany, macabre horror-comedy from Canadian director Grace Glowicki.” The 2025 edition features seven world premieres and one international premiere.

Producer and showrunner Bryan Fuller, known for creating Hannibal and American Gods, is bringing his directorial debut, Dust Bunny, to the Toronto Film Festival for a world premiere as part of the Midnight Madness section.
The horror thriller stars Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver, and portrays a young girl asking her neighbor for help killing the monster under her bed that she thinks ate her family. Fuller is headed to Toronto amid the backdrop a 2023 lawsuit brought by fellow Queer for Fear producer Sam Wineman that alleged a hostile workplace environment on set. The next arbitration hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 2026.

There are many, many ways that pop-culture fans have discovered shapeshifting rocker/actor Michael Des Barres over the decades. Some may know him from his big-screen debut at age 17 in the 1967 Sidney Poitier film To Sir, With Love; or as the frontman of the Deep Purple- and Led Zeppelin-associated bands Silverhead and Detective; or as the cowriter of Animotion’s 1983 hit “Obsession”; or as the longtime host of the Little Steven’s Underground Garage morning show on SiriusXM; or as iconic MacGyver villain Murdoc; or for his many other television appearances on shows like Roseanne, Seinfeld, Melrose Place, Northern Exposure, Frasier, and Nip/Tuck.

In the history of comic book cinema, few roles are coveted as much as playing Batman. Even long before the age of superhero dominance came in the 2000s, Tim Burton's "Batman" was a smash hit that helped make Michael Keaton a superstar. The Caped Crusader is one of the most enduring and beloved characters to ever debut in the pages of a comic book. Naturally, when Zack Snyder was looking to cast a new actor as Batman for what ultimately became "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," Warner Bros. cast a wide net, with quite a few actors in the mix. One of those actors had just come off a major role in the highly successful "Hobbit" franchise.

The "Star Trek: The Original Series" episode "Obsession" may be one of the most underrated episodes of the show. It's actually one of the stronger Captain Kirk episodes, allowing the character to confront some of his acknowledged personal weaknesses, and, in overcoming them, grow as a character.
Kirk (William Shatner) had flaws, of course, but he was often depicted on "Star Trek" as being in complete control of his faculties (most of the time), using his leadership instincts and willingness to take calculated risks to avail himself of any crisis. He could have a temper, but usually caught himself before doing anything rash. In pop culture, Kirk has a reputation for being something of a reckless cowboy who broke the Prime Directive on the regular (and he often did play a little fast-and-loose with Starfleet regulations), but revisiting old "Star Trek" episodes reveals that he was actually pretty stern and judicious.

Star Trek fans seemed excited to learn that David Frankham, who turned 99 years old on February 16, is now the oldest living actor to have appeared in any iteration of Star Trek. He played Larry Marvick in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, “Is There in Truth No Beauty?,” which first aired in 1968, during the show’s third and final season. It got us wondering who Star Trek’s oldest living director might be.
For obvious reasons, many people who guessed that 94-year-old William Shatner is Star Trek’s oldest living actor also likely assume that Shatner -- who helmed Star Trek V: The Final Frontier -- is the franchise’s oldest living director. But he’s not.
The answer is Ralph Senensky, who will turn 102 on May 1. Senensky called the shots on what he refers to as six and a half episodes of The Original Series. We’ll explain...

Of all the "movie brat" directors that came out of the New Hollywood era, Brian De Palma has to be the most underrated. While audiences always remember his most popular films, like Scarface, The Untouchables and Carlito's Way, they tend to overlook some of his most compelling work. Before spending the latter part of his career making gangster movies and crime dramas, De Palma was the "movie brat" most associated with horror and thrillers. Aside from being the first director to adapt a Stephen King book, his love and passion for the history of horror in cinema went on to inspire him to tell those kinds of stories throughout the first decade of his career.
De Palma's first movie to attract audiences was the 1972 thriller Sisters, which highlighted his grasp of edgy material inspired by thrillers of the past. De Palma would make multiple thrillers and horror films in the '70s,...

During a long career that started in 1956, Meyers was behind the release of such notable films as Brian De Palma’s Obsession (1976) and Blow Out (1981), Robert Aldrich’s Burt Lancaster starr Twilight’s Last Gleaming (1977) and Hal Ashby’s Peter Sellers-led classic Being There (1979).
Born on October 3, 1934, Meyers joined Columbia Pictures International during the 1950s, serving in Paris and Brussels and eventually becoming the European sales manager. He later held executive posts at National General Pictures, Lorimar Motion Pictures, Filmways Productions, Orion Pictures and Village Roadshow, playing a pivotal role in international film sales and distribution.

One of the most enduring heroes in all of science fiction is James Tiberius Kirk, protagonist of "Star Trek: The Original Series" and its accompanying films. Iconically played by William Shatner for much of the character's history, Kirk's legacy has spread into subsequent "Star Trek" shows and movies. While actors like "Star Trek" 2009's Chris Pine and "Star Trek: Discovery" cast member Paul Wesley have provided their own modern depictions of Kirk, Shatner's confidently assured captain is still the gold standard for the character. As the captain of the USS Enterprise, Kirk leads his crew to explore the galaxy and spread the United Federation of Planets' ethos of peaceful coexistence.
For the foundations of what makes Kirk such an effective sci-fi character, there are plenty of "Tos" episodes highlighting his qualities and Shatner's performance. These range from showing the more action-ready side of the venerable Starfleet officer to his more vulnerable and compassionate moments.

Could this possibly be a more inviting intro to a Criterion Closet video? We think not.

Television has proven itself to be an excellent medium for video game adaptations, given their tendency toward sprawling stories that need more room to breathe than a two or even three-hour film will allow. With the mega success of shows like The Witcher, The Last of Us, and Fallout, Hollywood is hungry for more series to fill their programming lineups. There are numerous game-to-tv adaptations currently in the works, including God of War, Mass Effect, and Devil May Cry, among others.

Daniel Craig is garnering serious praise for his performance in Luca Guadagnino's Queer. Craig shines as William Lee, an expatriate living in Mexico during the 1950s after fleeing the U.S. to avoid legal trouble. When Lee meets and falls for a younger sailor named Eugene (Drew Starkey), a passionate affair develops as the two bond through illicit drug use. It's a far different turn for Craig, who most moviegoers know for playing James Bond in five 007 films between 2006 and 2021.
Yet, a closer examination of Craig's impressive resume suggests that his performance as William Lee in Queer is not out of the pale. On the contrary, Craig has experience playing gay characters, obsessive lovers, and a man infatuated with a much younger partner, reminding everyone that Craig paid his dues and honed his craft years before adopting his 007 persona. Those who enjoy Craig's work in Queer must see his performances in Obsession,...

It's difficult to imagine a version of "Star Trek" wherein the central starship was not called the Enterprise. And "Enterprise" is, of course, a fantastic name for a starship living in an egalitarian, utopian future of togetherness and global unity. For one, the name is conceptual; it's not named after anything on Earth, eschewing any geocentricity. "Star Trek" can too often be geocentric, concerned more with the plight and personal details of humans and Earth than of its alien characters or their respective homeworlds. "Enterprise" ensures an element of neutrality.
Also, an "enterprise" is a grand thing to undertake. The name implies that the ship is on an active mission. The ship is not called the USS Complacency. Additionally, the abstract noun "enterprise" doesn't bear any kind of jingoistic underpinnings. Had the ship been called, say, the USS Freedom or even the USS Independence, it would feel markedly American. Not...

Ti West is the hands-on creative behind the X movie trilogy, which began with X in 2022, followed by Pearl later that year, and 2024's MaXXXine. Each film features Mia Goth as the protagonist, and she occasionally appears as multiple characters. Meanwhile, Ti West has taken on the role of director, writer, producer and editor, while bringing in Tyler Bates as the composer for each entry, along with some additional help along the way.
Considering the fairly tight-knit production, the films rely on every element performing at its best in order to deliver a satisfying final product. Fortunately, the music team has proven their capability and created critically acclaimed entries throughout the X series. MaXXXine also features some of...

When Curry Barker moved to Los Angeles a few years ago, he thought getting his short films on the festival circuit would be his path to making it as a director. But soon he discovered just uploading his films directly to YouTube was getting him attention. His 2023 horror short The Chair landed him Hollywood representation and a deal to direct a $1 million movie, Obsession. Then in August, he posted the $800 feature Milk & Serial, which he wrote, directed and starred in. It exploded online, attracting 1 million views.
“It just catapulted the amount of meetings I was taking,” says Barker, who notes he met with practically every studio and major horror producer in town.
Barker, also known for his comedy sketches on YouTube, is part of a new class of filmmakers who honed their chops on YouTube before breaking into Hollywood. The platform allows them to flex their creative muscles without...

Fatal Seduction is an erotic thriller series with little to offer as a smart television series but a lot to offer as a guilty pleasure. Created by Steven Pillemer, the Netflix series follows a married woman who goes on a weekend trip where she cheats on her husband because they have been having trouble in their marriage for a long time. Add a murder mystery to that storyline and Fatal Seduction runs like any erotic thriller. So, if you loved the erotic scenes and the thrilling mystery in Fatal Seduction here are some similar erotic thriller shows you should check out next.

"Sick" can mean a lot of things in the context of "The Boys." Season 4's newcomer Firecracker (Valerie Curry), for instance, is sick in a lot of ways. She's sick in that her whole life seems to be centered around getting revenge for a single mean girl incident that happened to her in her early teens. She's sick because she's peddling far-right conspiracy theories with seemingly full conviction, purely because those lies benefit her career. She's sick because she slept with a 15-year-old. But for the purposes of this piece, we're gonna stick to Firecracker's physical illness in the latter section of season 4. Why is Firecracker coughing so much?
The literal answer is easy: she's sick because she's taking a drug that helps out mothers who struggle with breastfeeding, except she's not a mother and she probably shouldn't be breastfeeding anyone, let alone a grown man with severe emotional problems.

It seems appropriate to read about some of our greatest filmmakers during the fall. (Festival season! Prestige pics! Megalopolis mania!) Plus, a guide to cinema for kiddos from A24, a look at one of Schwarzenegger’s most fun flicks, and lots of noteworthy novels. And watch for one more roundup before the end of 2024.
The De Palma Decade: Redefining Cinema with Doubles, Voyeurs, and Psychic Teens by Laurent Bouzereau (Running Press)
Documentary filmmaker and occasional author Laurent Bouzereau has found a novel way to approach the work of Brian De Palma. In The De Palma Decade, he focuses specifically on seven films that made the director one of filmdom’s most famous and infamous figures: Sisters, Phantom of the Paradise, Obsession, Carrie, The Fury, Dressed to Kill, and Blow Out. It was a remarkable run, and Bouzereau adroitly analyzes what makes them so powerful. The book also features interviews with...

Isabelle Huppert on Her Rumored Feud with James Gray and Why Nicole Kidman Won Venice for ‘Babygirl’
Watching “Babygirl” at the Venice Film Festival, I thought, “Isabelle Huppert is going to like this.” Here is a provocative movie, directed by Halina Reijn, starring Nicole Kidman as a corporate CEO engaging in kink and sexually submitting herself to a younger intern (Harris Dickinson). Kidman’s Romy cuts a powerful silhouette in the office by day, but by night, she’s on all fours being dominated in increasingly adventurous sexual encounters.
With Huppert as jury president, it was no surprise when Kidman won Best Actress, as Huppert famously stars in the darkly perverse “The Piano Teacher,” a movie Reijn’s script is surely in deep conversation with. In the 2001 Michael Haneke film, Huppert played a stoic music instructor who becomes sexually overpowered by a younger pupil. I went into “Babygirl” expecting the American version of “The Piano Teacher,” though Reijn’s film is more buoyantly sex-positive than sinisterly Freudian.

The Universal Theory.Familiar names come loaded with certain sets of expectations, and so it was at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where the official competition was chock-full with the latest features from known quantities. One of the great pleasures of festivalgoing lies in the thrill of discovery, of stepping into a film unburdened by one’s mileage with a director’s previous work. In the 2023 competition, there was only one title that promised a leap into the dark.Timm Kröger was at the festival back in 2014 with his graduation film, The Council of Birds, which played in the Critics’ Week sidebar. The film wasn’t picked up for distribution, even in the director’s native Germany, and remains virtually impossible to see. Given the sheer ambition of his sophomore feature, it’s tempting to imagine that the intervening nine years had been spent readying The Universal Theory for production.
