The Smallville Character You Likely Forgot Dave Bautista Played
Image
Many fans (this writer included), whether they are casual moviegoers or genuine film buffs, seem to be in agreement that Dave Bautista is the best WWE star turned actor. Look no further than his brief role in 2017's "Blade Runner 2049" (a movie that was simply too good to be a box office hit) to see just how much emotional gravitas he can bring to a character, even one with very minimal screen time.

However, before the former WWE champion began tearing it up on the silver screen with heavyweight directors like Denis Villeneuve and James Gunn, he was getting his start on The CW's "Smallville." Bautista made his acting debut in the show's sixth season, playing Aldar, a powerful criminal entity who is accidentally released from the Phantom Zone. While the character only appears in one episode, he leaves an incredibly bloody impression.

Immediately upon his arrival on Earth,...

You, a lone keeper, have been dispatched to the island, and tasked with manning the beacon. The fate of passing vessels and the nearby town now rests in his hands.

DC Makes a Major Change to Static That Reinvents the Hero's Iconic TV Show In the Worst Way
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet #2!DC Comics' Milestone imprint continues to take a different approach to the star of Static Shock compared to the cartoon. Static's comic book debut came in 1993, but the animated series that popularized him premiered in 2000. DC doesn't often let its onscreen media influence the comics, unlike Marvel. As a result, Dcau fans may be shocked at the differences between the Static comics and the Static Shock cartoon.

Among the biggest differences between Static Shock and Static is the character's position on family, which readers are reminded of in Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet #2 by Joseph P. Illidge, Darryl Banks, Atagun Ilhan, Christopher Sotomayor, and Andworld Design.

In the DC Animated Universe, Static loses his mom - Jean Hawkins, a paramedic - when she's shot during the Dakota Riots. In the Milestone Universe, both during Milestone's original run and its current revamp,...

The Twilight Zone Predicted The Real-Life Death Of One Of Its Actors
Image
Only deep-cut "Twilight Zone" aficionados will know this, but actor Jay Overholts holds the record for the most number of appearances on the show (Rod Serling himself notwithstanding). Counting voice performances, Overholtz appeared in the following:

In "Where Is Everybody?" he played the voice of a radio reporter. In "One for the Angels", he played a doctor. In "A Thing About Machines", he played an intern. In "Twenty Two", he played the voice on a Pa system. In "The Odyssey of Flight 33", he played an airline passenger (pictured above). In "Static", he played a random background character. In "The Jungle", he played a cab driver. And in "Showdown with Rance McGraw", he played a cowboy.

Overholts didn't have much of an acting career beyond those eight episodes, however. He was in two episodes of "Playhouse 90" in 1959 and turned up in a single episode of "Gunsmoke" as an unnamed character.

Miles Morales & Static Unite in the Crossover Team-Up Marvel & DC Need Most
Image
Both Static and Miles Morales resonate with audiences due to their representation as strong black superheroes making a team-up between them something that fans would love to witness. Static's introduction in the early 1990s, and Miles' debut nearly two decades later, are part of the slow but triumphant march toward greater inclusion in the superhero genre. A crossover between the two iconic black heroes, would be an instant jolt of excitement, showcasing their similarities, and emphasizing cultural power the two characters share.

The combination of Miles Morales' Spider-Man and Static from Static Shock proves once again to be a big hit with audiences, despite never officially having a crossover in the comics. More than once, the duo have been brought together in fan art, making it clear that it is a dream team-up for many fans.

The latest rendition of fan art pairing Miles Morales with the Milestone staple comes from OscarCargill on X.

"What if Blade Became Ghost Rider?" Static Shock Writer Creates Nightmarish Fanart That Should Enter Marvel Canon
Image
Static Shock writer Nikolas Draper-Ivey's fan art combines Ghost Rider and Blade, sparking interest among fans in witnessing this concept integrated into the Marvel Universe. The Blade/Ghost Rider fan-art posted by Draper-Ivey quickly garnered attention from fans online, leading readers to suggest that the author's Instagram "What-if?" could one day make its way into Marvel's official canon. Both Ghost Rider and Blade have seen a resurgence in the past year, as part of Marvel's increased focus on supernatural characters, making this the perfect time for this fusion of the two iconic horror-heroes.

Ghost Rider and Blade make for the ultimate pairing, when fused by the creative mind behind Static Shock. Ghost Rider and Blade have a storied history dating back to their time together in the Midnight Sons. However, they've certainly never joined forces like this before, as artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey envisions Marvel's premiere vampire taking on a...

The Twilight Zone "Static" Episode Ending Explained
Image
"Static" is a rare happy Twilight Zone episode with a magical twist that transports a bitter bachelor back in time for a second chance. Originally a short story by OCee Ritch, the episode highlights Beaumont's disdain for TV and nostalgia for the golden age of radio. Despite the romantic ending, the episode serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of living in the past and the pitfalls of excessive nostalgia.

The Twilight Zone episode "Static" is a mysterious tale about an old radio that enchants a man more than anyone realizes. Often ranked among the very best TV shows of all time, The Twilight Zone introduced a whole generation to a new brand of science fiction story-telling, a kind that felt real and of this world. Even when the plots are fantastical and dreamlike, the themes of The Twilight Zone episodes are prescient, relatable, and modern, particularly for...

Red Hood Gets Jaw-Dropping New Costume in Redesign by Static Shock Writer

Nikolas Draper-Ivey redesigns Red Hood, deepening and complicating his Batman connection with a futuristic techwear style. The redesign invites analysis of Red Hood's defiant yet similar methods to Batman in fighting crime. Red Hood's vampire bat skull helmet symbolizes a twisted connection to Batman in their shared war.

The creative mastermind behind the most recent iteration of Static Shock crafts a redesign for Red Hood that deepens his relationship with Batman. In the time since, with Static: Shadows of Dakota, he continued illustrating the character along with new duties as series writer.

The Twilight Zone's 'Disastrous' Videotape Episodes Led To Two Separate Lawsuits
Image
Within the lore surrounding Rod Serling's original "The Twilight Zone," which ran from 1959-1964 on CBS, the six episodes videotaped (as opposed to shot on film) during the second season are generally regarded by both fans and creators to be some of the series' biggest failures. These episodes are rivaled in reputation only by the shortened season of hour-long episodes (as opposed to the series' usual half-hour length) during the show's 4th year.

In both cases, these changes were mandated by the network, and were not internal decisions made by Serling or his crew. However, while the 4th season hour-length episodes suffered more from script and pacing issues, the videotaped second season episodes are by and large solid "Twilight Zone" scripts; it's the technical side of things that suffered instead, as CBS tried to cut the show's production costs.

The fact that these episodes were still pretty great sci-fi...

10 Most Messed Up Storylines From DC Animated Shows

DC's animated shows are not afraid to tackle disturbing and mature themes, even though they are aimed at children or young adults. Warning: Spoilers for Static: Shadows of Dakota #6!

Ebon, one of Static's foes, becomes even more dangerous after an upgrade and searches for his missing brother, Rubberband Man. Ebon tries to strike an alliance with Static by showing him horrific memories through a painful process. The series modernizes classic Static characters, including Ebon, by giving them darker and scarier updates.

Static's Nemesis Knows What Separates the Modern Version from His '00s Cartoon
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Static: Shadows of Dakota #6!

In the current continuity of Static comics, Bang Babies are being hunted and killed, leading to an alliance between Ebon and Static. Ebon claims that Static can't relate to his perspective because he hasn't experienced real trauma, unlike Ebon himself. Despite not having suffered personal tragedy, Static uses his powers to help and heal others, which makes him just as admirable as heroes molded by tragedy.

There is a major difference between the Static of the Static Shock cartoon and the comic-book version of the character — a difference that even his arch-rival is aware of. In the current continuity of Static comics, Bang Babies are being hunted and killed by a mysterious task force, and Virgil's young friend Quincy is the latest victim.

With Ebon's brother Rubberband Man held captive by the same group, he also has a vested interest in this conflict.

12 Classic Superhero Cartoons That Still Hold Up Today
Image
Classic Marvel and DC animated series have stood the test of time and continue to hold up even in the age of the MCU. Animation allowed superhero properties to be faithfully portrayed, often exploring them in ways that live-action films did not. These classic shows, such as Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series, remain popular and influential, with dedicated fan followings and demand for revivals.

The DC Universe and Marvel Cinematic Universe may include the most well-known superhero comic adaptations, but there are numerous classic Marvel and DC animated series that hold up to this day. Thanks to the MCU’s success, superhero adaptations are a major mainstream genre, but for much of their history before the MCU movie timeline kicked off, superhero adaptations were typically seen as a more niche concept. Still, successes were not unheard of, with several classic cartoons leaving their mark...

There's A Reason Why Six Twilight Zone Episodes Will Always Look Terrible
Image
It doesn't matter how popular a TV series is: If it costs money, the network is going to try to save money. Sometimes that means turning the second season finale of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" into a god awful clip show. Sometimes that means making the whole fourth season of the helicopter action/adventure series "Airwolf" without the original cast... or the helicopter.

In the case of the classic series "The Twilight Zone" — a critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning sci-fi/fantasy/horror anthology created by one of the most celebrated writers working in television, Rod Serling — there was no continuity, and therefore no clip show. There was no regular cast, so no regular cast to cut.

As a result, when the second season of "The Twilight Zone" turned out to be very, very expensive, the producers made a decision that barely saved any money, artistically hindered the program, and left us...

There has been no confirmation of this yet, but fans are already imagining the possibilities, such as in some new fan art. Actor Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role in Stranger Things, has expressed interest in joining the superhero world, preferably in the Dcu as Static Shock.

Miles Morales is coming to the big screen in live-action format at some point in the near future, and fans hope to see him joining forces with Peter Parker, maybe in Spider-Man 4, the next adventure of Tom Holland's version of the popular hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the second part of Sony Pictures' animated trilogy, the studio confirmed that they want to bring Miles Morales to a live-action format after the huge success the...

The Sexiest Movie Vampires
Image
This article contains some spoilers for the 1985 movie, Lifeforce

Vampires! They seduce, they enrapture, they hunger for us, and sometimes that’s not 100 percent horrifying, even if it might mean our imminent demise. We humans are a complex sort in that way.

Though vampires are typically depicted as being smart, powerful, sexy, and slick, there are definitely some onscreen bloodsuckers who are just incredibly gross. These are not them.

Santanico Pandemonium – From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn has a lot going on. Half crime spree movie and half vampire carnage spectacular, you’re either onboard for the film’s sudden switcheroo or you’re heading for the nearest exit, but one thing that many of us can agree on after making it through the other side is that Salma Hayek can put her damn foot in our mouth if she wants to. Hayek only has a small role...

New Static Graphic Novel Pokes Fun At Black Superhero Trope
Image
A new graphic novel pokes fun at a trope some readers have noticed over the years, that many Black superheroes like Static have a common superpower: lightning. Static, Black Lightning, Vulcan, Bumblebee, and Juice all have lightning abilities, and that's just the DC side of things. Name-dropping Marvel lightning specialists like Storm only lengthens this list more than it already is.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly how or why lightning powers are so prevalent among Black superheroes. The best explanation would be that several creators have attempted, in one way or another and for one reason or another, to duplicate the success of Black Lightning. This dates back as early as the conception of The All-New Super Friends Hour in 1977, where Black Lightning was originally supposed to be part of the team's line-up, but due to rights disputes between DC and the character's creator, Tony Isabella, a new character named...

Static Explains the Real Reason Superheroes Are So Sarcastic & Quippy
Image
Warning: spoilers for Milestone 30th Anniversary Special #1The beloved DC/Milestone character Static is just one example of a common superhero trope where crime-fighters can't help cracking wise while saving the day. It's a complaint that's often leveled at the genre, especially in movies like those of the MCU and Dceu, where fans can feel like snarky one-liners detract from the seriousness of a given threat. However, it turns out that superhero sarcasm isn't some random cliché - there's a reason every other hero can't stop mouthing off.

The Milestone 30th Anniversary Special one-shot explains why in 'Static Beyond' from writer & artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey. At Bruce's request following a falling out with his future protégé Terry McGinnis - aka Batman Beyond - the now-35-year-old Virgil Hawkins tries to get through to Terry, only for the new Batman to crack jokes rather than attempt to connect. Static Shock's Coolest Character Makes Comics Debut in Milestone Special
Image
The fan-favorite character Anansi from Static Shock is going to finally be making his comic book debut this summer. Originally voiced by Carl Lumbly (the Dcau's voice of Martian Manhunter) Anansi first appeared in the seasons three and four episodes "Static in Africa" and "Out of Africa." Despite only appearing in two episodes, the character has received a cult following for his enigmatic personality and fascinating lore. Now, the character is bringing that celebrated lore and charisma to the comics.

DC Comics has announced that in June, Anansi and Static will have their first comic book team-up in Static: Team Up: Anansi #1 by Evan Narcisse and Charles Stewart III, who makes his DC debut from the Milestone Initiative Talent Development program. The one-shot announcement arrives with a preview of the main cover by Nikolas Draper-Ivey (Static: Shadows of Dakota co-writer) and variant covers from Natacha Bustos (DC Power) and Edwin Galmon (Cyborg). 2023 Grammys R&b preview: The field is more crowded than ever with Beyonce, Silk Sonic, John Legend …
Image
Few years are as packed for the R&b categories at the Grammys as this one. With releases from some of the top artists in the genre and in music in general, as well as a lot of Grammy darlings back in the mix, it seems like many artists will truly just be lucky to net a nom. Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders this year.

We can’t talk about R&b without first talking about Queen Bey. This year Beyoncé could compete in Best Progressive R&b Album with her newest release, “Renaissance.” The album is acclaimed and will easily be the front-runner if it is submitted in R&b (it might instead be slotted in pop). As for song choices, Beyoncé could go for the groovy “Cuff It” or the urban-leaning “Church Girl” for Best R&b Performance, while “Plastic Off The...

Ready to enter the fifth dimension? We have the Twilight Zone New Year's Marathon schedule right here.

The Twilight Zone is as timeless as infinity. In this dimension, 2019 was a special year for the iconic sci-fi anthlogy as it marked the series' 60th anniversary. We may be entering a new decade, but Rod Serling will be there to greet us once more with the annual New Year's Twilight Zone marathon on Syfy.

The marathon begins on Tuesday, Dec. 31st at 6:00 a.m. with "One For The Angels" and concludes on Thursday, Jan. 2nd at 3:30 a.m. with "A Piano in the House."

The Question Bounces Through Time In New DC Series
Jim Dandy Nov 20, 2019

Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz take The Question back to Hub City, then back to the Old West, then to the Depression...

Denys Cowan is a living legend. He pencilled the original run of The Question with Dennis O’Neill, laying the groundwork for that character to become a fan favorite for three decades. He co-founded Milestone Media and gave the world Static and Hardware and all the other characters that make you shout in delight when they show up on Young Justice. Hell, he even drew the album art for Joe Biden’s favorite Wu Tang record.

Bill Sienkiewicz is also a living legend. He just dropped an art retrospective covering a portion of his work as the primary artist on books like Elektra: Assassin and New Mutants and Stray Toasters. But beyond his work as the primary artist on all-time classics, he’s also one of...

Rob Garrison
Karate Kid & Cobra Kai Actor Rob Garrison Dies at 59
Rob Garrison
Rob Garrison has passed away. He was 59-years old. Garrison is arguably best known for playing Tommy in 1984's The Karate Kid, a role which he reprised this year for YouTube's successful Cobra Kai series. The actor died Friday morning in a hospital in West Virginia. According to his sister-in-law, Garrison was suffering liver and kidney problems and was in the hospital for over a month. He died as a result of his organs shutting down. His family is currently setting up funeral arrangements.

"Rob was a great person and ambassador to The Karate Kid legacy," said his talent manager Rick Henriques in a statement. Henriques went on to say, "His performance in season 2 of Cobra Kai, being his last, was simply amazing and he stole the episode." Garrison's Tommy character was the one in Karate Kid who excitedly cheered on William Zabka's Johnny Lawrence during his final match with Ralph Macchio.

Young Justice: Outsiders seamlessly merges storytelling with fanservice for another great episode.

This Young Justice: Outsiders review contains spoilers.

Young Justice Outsiders Episode 17

Here's me about halfway through the latest episode of Young Justice's incredible season.

"Holy crap, are they doing the Newsgirl Legion?"

Here's me, not two minutes later.

"Holy Crap Is The Newsgirl Legion Also Mystery Incorporated?"

And me again at the end of the episode:

"Wait, did they just do superhero Arab Spring?"

Spoilers: they didn't, but that's because the Arab Spring was a complicated geopolitical moment and a multifaceted movement that used social media not just as a way to circumvent hostile, government-controlled information sources for messaging purposes, but also as a way to organize civic engagement among connected, high-information activists, and this is a half hour cartoon on a comic book publisher's proprietary streaming service. But the fact that I could...

Fans have been waiting to see the return of Young Justice since the original series came to an end, and now the trailer is finally here and it's 5-minutes long! The series looks like it's going to be so good and I'm so excited to watch the adventures of these characters continue.

The footage shows Nightwing, who left the team at the end of season 2, reunite with Superboy, Aqualad, and Artemis for one last mission. That mission is to take on the rise of metahuman trafficking and the ensuing intergalactic arms races to control people with powers. We also get a first look at the show’s newest character, Brion Markov (Troy Baker), the Prince of Markovia, who discovers he has the metahuman gene.

John Suits
The Outre Eye of Daniel Xiii Featuring Pandemic Director John Suits and Producer Gabe Cowan!
John Suits
Hey there, creeps! Pull up a coffin and gather ’round, because die-rector John Suits and Producer Gabe Cowan just stepped across my dismal doorstep to chat up their latest flick Pandemic!

Famous Monsters. Welcome, welcome, my fiends; please take a load off… mind that throw pillow; it’s genuine werewolf hide. Anyway, let’s get down to brass tacks. Pandemic, how did that come to be?

John Suits. We were reading through a bunch of scripts looking for our next projects and came across Dustin T. Benson’s script, Viral (the name was later changed to Pandemic), which was on the 2012 Bloodlist. We loved the story and the idea of shooting a movie in the style of a First Person Shooter.

Gabe Cowan. At the time we were looking for something fun and different for John to dig his visual mind into. We’ve always been guys who like to try new and different things.
