Exclusive: London’s Kedoo Entertainment is continuing to build out in the kids’ content space.

The producer and distributor has launched a Super Toons app, struck more Fast channels agreements, and acquired animated action series Gormiti Seasons 1 and 2 from DeAPlaneta.

The Super Toons app is now available to download and will have a programming line-up including Angry Birds, Masha and the Bear, Booba, Pororo the Little Penguin, Om Nom Stories and Mighty Mike.

The app, which costs 99p ($1.29) per month or £9.99 per year, will be an extension of the existing Super Toons TV YouTube channels, which currently have more than 20 million subscribers cumulatively.

Meanwhile, Fast channel Super Toons TV, which has been distributed on Samsung TV Plus since 2020, has struck a pair of carriage deals. TV set manufacturer Tcl will run both Super Toons TV and Toon Mania on its Tcl Channel worldwide, while an agreement with Xiaomi will see...

Universal Kids, the youth-oriented network that began life as the preschool-centric PBS Kids Sprout before being rebranded as a destination for a wider age range in 2017, is shutting down, Variety has confirmed. The network is expected to go dark on March 6, with an on-screen slate after that directing audiences to other platforms.

The news means Universal Kids won’t be part of the stable of cablers that transition to the new SpinCo entity set to be run by Mark Lazarus and include MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel.

“NBCUniversal remains committed to family entertainment, including award-winning brands Illumination and Dreamworks Animation, as well as kids-focused programming on Peacock,” the company said in a statement.

Netflix released its semi-annual data dump on Thursday, unveiling viewership for the streamer’s biggest hits — and not so big releases — from January through June of 2024.

While the most-watched seasons of TV during the six-month interval included “Fool Me Once,” “Bridgerton” Season 3, “Baby Reindeer” and “The Gentlemen,” a group of winners have arisen from the data dump, including children’s TV as a whole — including “Peppa Pig” — “Young Sheldon” and buzzy crime docs like “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal.”

As the streamer continues to bolster its live event programming, the success of “The Roast of Tom Brady” followed in the footsteps of “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” as it found an eager audience, whereas the first-ever livestream of the SAG-AFTRA Awards earlier this year didn’t do much for Netflix, viewership-wise.

Subscribers are joining or staying primarily due to the vast catalog of movies and TV shows available. Netflix is also constantly adding new properties, including Netflix originals, so the promise of more is worth the cost for many. Sometimes, though, the licensing for an existing property expires. Or, if a contract is up for renegotiation, they have to make the tough decision to let something go for one reason or another. As the year winds down, it’s time to look back at Netflix’s biggest hits, and today, we begin by looking into what kids’ TV shows picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s over the past 12 months.

This list is compiled using FlixPatrol data collected from the daily top 10s on Netflix from over 80 countries around the globe. They assign points and values to each title that gets featured on any day. Their data isn’t perfect as their method doesn’t quite fully capture the complexity of viewership data, such as total watch time, repeat viewings, or demographic details of the audience. Also worth noting is that Netflix changed up its top 10 metrics midway through the year to favor views over pure viewing hours. That said, their data provides a pretty accurate snapshot of what performed best over a long period.

Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled Monday that it has rebranded its preschool network Boomerang to Cartoonito across Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Turkey, and the Middle East and North Africa.

Now available under the new name as a pay-tv channel, Cartoonito will include such longtime Boomerang favorites as Tom & Jerry, Mr Bean and Masha and the Bear, and such newer content as Thomas and Friends: All Engines Go and Lucas the Spider, along with brand-new programming.

“Cartoonito brings them together, while adding brand-new shows like Batwheels, Bugs Bunny Builders and Interstellar Ella — just for starters — offering a wider variety of programs filled with new friends, trusted fun, and extraordinary adventures for the whole family to enjoy,” the company said. “Cartoonito is Warner Bros. Netflix has paused all productions and acquisitions out of Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine, according to a just-published report in Variety. Representatives at Netflix could not immediately be reached for comment from IndieWire.

Netflix reportedly had four Russian original projects in the works. One project affected is a crime thriller series currently in production that has now been put on hold. The neo-noir mystery series “Zato” was set to be the streamer’s first original series filmed in Russia. The series is set around uncertainties in the aftermath of the fall of the Soviet Union. Netflix’s options of original series are quite vast and impressive this month. Animaccord, the Russian company behind one of the world’s top five children’s shows, animation series “Masha and the Bear,” has revealed plans to expand into longer-form content, including a feature film, as well as podcasts, tech-driven content and custom-made content for social media platforms.

More than a decade after its launch, the show “just keeps giving and giving,” Animaccord CEO, Claus Tomming, told Variety. The time was right to boost its universal appeal still further, he said, and “expand the storytelling.” He added that all successful franchises at some point “face the challenge of renewing and evolving in terms of your audience,” and that the development of so many new media platforms offered an opportunity for the brand.

Blue Fox Entertainment has picked up worldwide rights for virtual AFM excluding Germany and China to 3D animated feature Conni And The Cat, a theatrical hit in its native Germany over the summer.

The production grossed nearly $3m in restricted German theatres through Wild Bunch Germany in the summer, and will open in the US via Blue Fox’s domestic division in mid-2021.

While much of the entertainment world is in lockdown and in danger of drying up their respective content pipelines soon, Netflix has claimed that they have more than enough finished projects and business will continue as usual. While that may seem to be an outlandish boast, it’s hard to look at Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 and not think “man, they’re really just not stopping.”

Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 are positively loaded with new Netflix originals, intriguing recent films, and even some fun new stock TV shows. Office creator Greg Daniels latest project, Space Force, premieres on May 29 and will likely be Netflix’s big blockbuster this month. Having access to Daniels, Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and more will do that for a project.

With much of the world’s population currently advised to remain at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Netflix (and other streaming services) are more popular than ever. The company is reporting record audience numbers, which isn’t exactly surprising given that they almost literally have a captive audience, and over the last few weeks, Netflix has become so popular that in Europe they’ve had to decrease their video quality as so many people are streaming that they were in danger of slowing down the whole internet.

With cinemas now closed, folks want something to look forward to in the weeks to come and thankfully, we know what to expect. Below you’ll find what’s on May’s menu for the United States, with this being just the first batch of announced titles and more to follow soon.

NBCUniversal is rearranging the toys it uses in its kids-programming playground.

The company’s Universal Kids will place a bigger bet on its ties to DreamWorks Animation, which NBCU bought in August of 2016 for approximately $3.8 billion. The network will stop developing original shows that are not based on DreamWorks properties, according to a person familiar with the matter, though it will continue to acquire series made by third-party producers.

The move takes place amid declining ratings and an executive restructure that has the network’s operations reporting directly to Frances Berwick, the executive who oversees NBCU’s lifestyle-based cable networks, including Bravo and Oxygen. Deirdre Brennan, the former general manager of Universal Kids, left in February. Universal Kids has been the primary vehicle NBCU hoped to ride to get into the multi-billion dollar market for kids entertainment, jockeying with rivals like Walt Disney, Viacom’s Nickelodeon and WarnerMedia’s Cartoon Network.

Russian animation work, even during the Cold War, found its way to European TV screens, where characters were dubbed but fairy tale-inspired toons had deep appeal to non-Russian kids. These days, despite impressive digital wizardry and a multitude of new platforms, character and story are still the special sauce that make toons from the East succeed abroad, say producers.

Competition will be lively at Cannes for hot new titles with growing interest in new Russian animation work — just one indicator is Netflix’s buy of the series “Leo and Tig” and “Be-Be Bears” from Moscow-based Parovoz last fall as part of its strategy to beef up children’s programming. The two seasons of shorts, about animal adventurers, have done well with kids worldwide.

Buyers are also mindful of last year’s “Snow Queen: Fire & Ice” success. The wintry adventure from leading toon company Wizart broke records after its release in April last year.

There’s no single scene in which Elsie Fisher suddenly becomes awkward middle schooler Kayla in Bo Burnham’s feature directorial debut “Eighth Grade.” It’s there from the start, fully formed. Burnham’s film debuted at Sundance in January, where the timely (and timeless) story of Kayla’s final weeks in the unique hell of eighth grade captures the full spectrum of modern middle-school life. Fisher, who had just finished her own middle-school years when the project filmed in summer 2017, brings a natural veracity to the role — here’s an actual kid, playing a kid, and bringing all that fresh experience with her — but her performance isn’t a shallow aping of her own life.
