The 1960's and early 70's were turmoil in this country. The space program was one of the few things that united everyone, and made us all proud to be Americans.To be the wife of an astronaut was to be put on a pedestal and be the most perfect wife, mother and hostess at all times.Not an easy job for anyone. These ladies not only supported each other, raised the children pretty much on their own and still had to be humble and remain in the background.
