    Pushy local boy made good Max Burr returns home to Sugartown,the run-down seaside resort where his brother Jason,soon to marry Emily,daughter of mayor Ron,is trying to stop his ailing rock factory from going under. Max plans to open a casino and buy the debt-ridden factory,displeasing the staff. Then they learn that Sugartown was once the ballroom dance capital of the North and persuade ex-dancer Sam to open a dance academy. Sam's dizzy daughter Carmen accidentally sabotages both Max and Jason's attempts to impress the same investor but suggests another means of saving Sugartown - by manufacturing the famous old sweets that once made the town famous.

    Assisted by the loyal staff headed by Margery Jason finds takers for his 'heritage' sweets and pulls off a deal with a supermarket chain,though it means he misses the launch night of the dance school. Here well-meaning Carmen announces that loner taxi driver - and star dancer - Travis is Margery's son through her affair with Jason and Max's father,making him a co-heir to the factory. Embittered that nobody told him before, he is prepared to join Max in the hostile take-over for the factory,which Max aims to turn into a luxury hotel. The workers' efforts to meet the first deadline would seem to be in vain - until Travis drops a bomb-shell which could save them all.

    Ron and the workers are about to tell Jason that Max is not his brother and therefore not an heir to the factory when Jason and Emily preempt them by declaring that they are getting married at the weekend. When Margery tells Jason the truth he refuses to act on it but Emily takes delight in telling Max,later regretting it when she hears how Jason's father was mean to him.Following a bust-up with Travis Carmen flees to Leeds but he goes after her and they return to Sugartown in time for the wedding. On her way to the church Emily calls to see Max and almost suggests they go off together but he does the decent thing and,after watching the wedding,from a distance,drives off to Sheffield and another venture. The ceremony over everybody else repairs to the reception at Sam's dance school where they all trip the light fantastic.
