In Netflix’s “The Electric State,” the sci-fi adventure from Anthony and Joe Russo, Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt help renew a robot rebellion in an alternate version of the ’90s. The robots themselves are not exactly new, at least not in terms of looks. They share the kitschy design of the robots in the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag on which the film is based. But there are 175 of them — which meant the film needed a prodigious ensemble of motion capture performers.
Led by motion choreographer/actor Terry Notary, the mo-cap team actually outnumbered the principal actors. “It was like a great casting call, trying to find the right characters for the mood of the film,” production designer Dennis Gassner (“Blade Runner 2049”) told IndieWire. “ And it took a lot of trial and error with the visual effects team to make it work.”

While we likely won’t be getting a new “Blade Runner” feature film anytime soon, the franchise is taking a page from “Alien: Earth” and expanding with a new spinoff television series at Amazon Prime Video. “Blade Runner 2099” is set 50 years after the events of “Blade Runner 2049,” the new cyberpunk show features an impressive cast led by Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Hunter Schafer, and Tom Burke (“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”).

Before he made Dune, acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve made another critically acclaimed sci-fi drama. Arrival, starring Amy Adams, arrives on Hulu in April.
Arrival features Adams stars as Louise Banks, a linguist who is recruited by the United States Army to find a way to communicate with extraterrestrials who have landed on Earth. When the aliens mention bringing a "weapon" to Earth, tensions rise among the nations of the world, pushing things to the brink of all-out war. The film sees Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker and Michael Stuhlbarg appear in supporting roles.
Similar to Dune, Arrival's plot is more complex than it appears on the surface. As Banks communicates and learns more about the aliens' language, they learn how the creatures perceive time, which allows Banks to see visions of the past and future, including the death of her daughter. The emotional aspects of Arrival, as well as how...

Tom Burke, known for his work in “Furiosa” and the BBC series “Strike,” is gearing up for a major role in the upcoming “Blade Runner 2099” series on Prime Video. This series will pick up after the events of the iconic Blade Runner films, continuing the exploration of what it means to be human in a world full of advanced technology and artificial beings.
While details about the plot remain under wraps, Burke teased some exciting aspects of the series. He revealed that Blade Runner 2099 will have a visual style much closer to the original Blade Runner film, directed by Ridley Scott, than its sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Burke describes the aesthetic as a “Baroque, eclectic mix of cultures and time periods,” which fans of the original movie will likely recognize.

Science fiction has long provided audiences with a means of escapism into new worlds and civilizations and epic struggles that exist between the forces of good and evil. Among the directors who have been instrumental in the modern age of cinema in bringing new worlds to life has been director Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve, director of Blade Runner 2049 and the newest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, has been critical of the Star Wars franchise. In particular, the direction and tone the films took following the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983, citing that the franchise became geared toward children.
I find that there is some validity to Villeneuve’s comments about the franchise. After all, the intense battle on Hoth between rebel forces and Imperial walkers in The Empire Strikes Back and the Ewoks bringing down a legion of what Emperor Palpatine refers to as “his best troops...

Ryan Gosling is probably Canada’s finest export after maple syrup. From pumping up our adrenaline in films like Blade Runner 2049 to robbing our hearts in The Notebook and being the man we all deserve in Barbie, Ryan Gosling has done it all. On top of it all, the man sings. Of course, he does. Over the years, he has proven time and time again that he is wholeheartedly committed to his craft, even if it means doing a film for the story despite a low paycheck.

In 2006, Ryan Gosling starred in the Oscar-nominated film, Half Nelson, along with Anthony Mackie. While the former’s salary was low, the latter’s was somehow even lower, but it looks like he doesn’t mind it at all. After all, being a “working actor” means much more to him than cashing in checks.
How much did Anthony Mackie make for Half Nelson?...

Some people complain that there is no point to sequels, remakes and reboots. Why make a new version when it obviously can't be as good as the original? They have a point. Hollywood has littered our screens with disappointment. Sometimes they are pretty and well acted but completely misunderstand the original film: Blade Runner 2049. Sometimes they just mess things up like the remakes of The Day The Earth Stood Still and Bangkok Dangerous. Sometimes they are good, and Yojimbo (a loose remake of The Glass Key) and Sanjuro, its sequel, are very good.
The BFI have released both films in a single package. It comes in both standard Blu-ray (HD from 4K restoration) and Uhd (4K). Both of the films are black and white and benefit greatly from the high dynamic range that the Uhd format provides. In terms of audio and visual quality the restorations are both up to.

Those Ryan Gosling fans hankering to see the Canadian actor in the only Western movie of his career thus far are in luck. The 1998 TV movie Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy is free to stream on Amazon Freevee, allowing Gosling fans to see him in an early one-of-a-kind role that flashed his precocious acting talents and led to his A-list Hollywood status.
Well-received enough to spawn a TV series from 1998 to 2000, Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy is a romantic comedic western that tracks a trio of cattle ranchers in British Columbia in the 1940s. With a wealth of TV experience from his Young Hercules days, Gosling shines with the charming magnetism he's known for today, crafting a compelling and credible cowboy character. While not a life-changing event, Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy is a must-see for Gosling diehards and completists.

Dave Bautista said his In the Lost Lands character is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Eastwood starred in a handful of genre films before the Dollars Trilogy, where he played his career's most iconic role.
In the Lost Lands cast Dave Bautista in a uniquely familiar role. He plays Boyce, a hunter who joins a witch in her search for a magical gift that would transform their queen to a werewolf. That premise screams adventure fantasy, but Bautista’s character has all the earmarks of a Spaghetti Western cowboy. The actor confirmed this with DiscussingFilm, describing the movie as a “Western stuck in a fantasy world”. He knew he was onboard after reading the opening narration. “I’d been looking to play a cowboy, and all day long I was just thinking ‘Clint Eastwood, what would Clint Eastwood do?’” he explained.

Taylor Sheridan & Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-Nominated Movie Becomes Netflix Global Hit 10 Years Later
Taylor Sheridan and Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-nominated movie has become a global Netflix hit a decade after its release. The Canadian director started his career with four French-language films, including Incendies, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature. From there, Villeneuve transitioned into English-language movies with Prisoners and Enemy, but gained further recognition for his sci-fi films Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and Dune: Part Two – which earned a total of 28 Oscar nominations and won 11.

Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi actioner Blade Runnercreated a futuristic dystopia in which humans and replicants (a.k.a. synthetic humanoids) fight for their personhood — a world and moral question that's endured for decades. Since its 1982 debut, a growing fanbase has watched the original movie spawn an ever-expanding franchise. Filmmakers have made several spin-off shorts, Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2036: Nexus Dawn, and 2048: Nowhere to Run, that further lay out the universe's lore. They also made the offshoot animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, as well as started developing an upcoming limited series on Prime Video called Blade Runner 2099. However, its biggest sequel installment in the saga so far is the film, Blade Runner 2049.

The collapse of Technicolor has also seen the closure of The Mill and Mpc, pointing to a growing crisis in the VFX business.

Last year, the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017 – made its way through production. We’re waiting to hear when the show is going to premiere, but in the meantime, cast member Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) has told Variety that Blade Runner 2099 is closer to the aesthetic of the original film than to 2049.
Tom Burke stars in the series alongside Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow”), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman...

Blade Runner has become one of the most ambitious sci-fi franchises over the years, largely thanks to the work of directors Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve, and now the franchise is now set to expand into television for its first live-action series. Tom Burke and Michelle Yeoh will star in Blade Runner 2099, the upcoming show set 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, which is coming to Prime Video. Although the series lacks an official release date, it’s expected to premiere sometime in the latter half of 2025. During a recent interview with Variety, Blade Runner 2099 star Tom Burke compared the show to the Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling-led movies that have come before, and even revealed which movie is more comparable to the upcoming series:...

One of the best science fiction movies of the last decade, Denis Villeneuve’s incredible Blade Runner 2049 laid the foundation for the fantastic director to continue down the path of excellent sci-fi filmmaking, culminating in his two Academy Award-nominated adaptations of Frank Herbert's seminal novel Dune. The film features some of the most stunning cinematography, fantastic music and sound design and patiently brilliant storytelling in recent cinema history, continuing to chronicle the evolution of robotic artificial intelligence and the implications that these life forms would have on a futuristic world.
One thing that stands above all in Blade Runner 2049 is the performances, pairing legendary actors like Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Robin Wright with relative newcomers like Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis and Sylvia Hoeks to create one of the most stacked casts in recent films. Ridley Scott's Blade Runneris carrying on an impressive legacy. Fans of the 1982 sci-fi classic likely never dreamed of getting another film in the dystopian neo-noir world Scott expertly crafted, that is, until Denis Villeneuve got his shot at making a sequel. With Blade Runner 2049, the Dune director made a sequel so good it could stand on its own, and now Prime Video has put together an impressive team to expand on the Blade Runner saga in Blade Runner 2099, an upcoming sequel series that promises to take the franchise back to its roots.

Wherever you call home, it’s hard to be invested in cinephile culture without a mind towards its health. It was hardly some casual choice when Sean Baker took time during an Oscar-acceptance speech to plea for greater attendance––with each year every purchase at an Anthology, Spectacle, or Maysles feels more and more like an investment in the future, or perhaps a protest vote against our present. And few fight so valiantly as La Clef Revival Collective, a Parisian group who’ve earned praise from Martin Scorsese, Jean-Luc Godard, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter, Justine Triet, Leos Carax, Adèle Haenel, and Céline Sciamma (the latter of whom sits on their board).
When La Clef, a Parisian theater initially open since 1973, faced severe risk of closure in 2019, the Revival Collective and aforementioned filmmakers joined forces to save the space. They are seeking $400,000 between now and April to fund renovations,...

Keanu Reeves has insisted a fifth ‘John Wick’ movie is unlikely to happen. The 60-year-old actor had played the assassin from the eponymous 2014 film until the character’s passing in 2023’s ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, and has now stressed there probably won’t be more movies starring the hitman to come.In an interview with ComicBook.com, he said: "You know, the character’s dead. He died in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’."Even when it was suggested to ‘The Matrix’ star that John Wick could be resurrected in some way, Reeves insisted that wasn’t part of the discussion currently. When asked whether there was a plan to revive the assassin, he said: "Right now? Right now there isn’t."‘John Wick’ producer Erica Lee had also previously admitted that "the stars have to align" if a fifth film is ever to be made.Speaking with Screen Rant, she said: "I...

“Don’t stop believin’, hold on to that feelin’,” as Journey’s classic song goes. And in a way, that perfectly reflects the journey of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two. With a wave of anticipation, it faced the Academy Awards with its five nominations—Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound.
Yet, like a stage performer left out of the lead role, Villeneuve was glaringly absent from the Best Director category, sparking frustration and heartbreak from fans and fellow actors alike.

Many directors' films end up with multiple versions as a result of studio intervention, international re-cuts, or re-released director's cuts. Ridley Scott is certainly one of those filmmakers, having created different director's cuts for 10 movies throughout his career — Robin Hood, Alien, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, The Martian, Gladiator, The Counselor, Legend, Kingdom of Heaven, and, perhaps most controversially, his sci-fi masterpiece, 1982's Blade Runner. The 1992 re-edit of the film is, despite some controversy, widely considered to be one of the greatest director's cuts of all time, eliminating certain things and inserting others (the unicorn dream) in order to create more metaphysical mystery and ambiguity. But that wasn't the only director's cut of Blade Runner.
In 2007, for the 25th anniversary of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott released what is known as 'The Final Cut' of the film, which is now streaming on Netflix beginning today (you can watch it...

Before Taylor Sheridan dominated the streaming landscape with his riveting television series such as Yellowstone, Landman, and various other projects, the writer would be best known for several of his enthralling screenplays taken on by talented filmmakers. Perhaps the best-known film from Sheridan's body of written work is Sicario, which Denis Villeneuve directed. Before the acclaimed filmmaker helmed the adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune, it was 2015's Sicario that would further establish Villeneuve as a powerhouse director with an eye for powerful storytelling. Now, the film will have a new streaming home on Netflix this March.
Sicario will be hitting the streaming platform on March 1st, allowing Netflix subscribers to check out one of the earlier mainstream films in Villeneuve's career. That’s a double life that Judith’s best friend Debbie (played by Spencer) knows nothing about — until a hit goes wrong. After the SAG Awards 2025 kicked off on Sunday, Feb. 23, the Oscar race became clearer—and no, Timothée Chalamet is not in favor. Although Chalamet secured a big win at SAG, Adrien Brody remains the front-runner after collecting the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and BAFTA. So now, Chalamet’s Oscar chances seem shaky, with Brody gaining momentum.

With the recent news that Dune: Messiah will begin filming earlier than anticipated, all eyes return to the masterful direction of Denis Villeneuve. The supremely talented French-Canadian filmmaker is best known for such epic movies as Dune, Arrival, Sicario, and Blade Runner 2049, but also for smaller and more intimate affairs like Prisoners and Enemy, both starring Jake Gyllenhaal and released in 2013.
Despite being the lowest-rated movie of Villeneuve's cinematic career on Rotten Tomatoes, Enemy's ambitious and ambiguous nature bears closer scrutiny. The mysterious thriller offers a fascinating character study and features one of the wildest Wtf endings, which will instantly stir debate and warrant repeat viewings. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two was the first big blockbuster of 2024 and one of the best sci-fi adaptations of all time. Based on the novel by Frank Herbert, Villeneuve’s vision was praised by many and it was also a commercial blockbuster. While the filmmaker was famously snubbed for this year’s Oscars, the film itself has been nominated for Best Picture.
Villeneuve has been one of the most interesting and unique filmmakers to be working at the moment. His previous sci-fi epic Blade Runner 2049 was also highly praised despite not being a box office hit. While it got the legendary Roger Deakins his first Oscar, Villeneuve believed that a lack of a Best Picture nomination was due to its box office performance.

Dave Bautista’s Rom-Com Dream! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Dave Bautista wants to star in a rom-com. No explosions, no apocalyptic threats — just love, laughs, and maybe a slow-motion run through the rain. But Hollywood doesn’t seem to be calling, and he’s starting to wonder why.
“I know I’m not your typical rom-com lead,” he admitted at the Knock at the Cabin premiere in New York City. “I’m a little rough around the edges. But I always, you know, I look in the mirror and I say, I ask myself, ‘Am I that unattractive? Is there something that unappealing about me that excludes me from these parts?’”
The man has played an intergalactic warrior, a deadly spy, and a literal apocalypse-bringer. But a charming bookshop owner who falls for an equally quirky co-star? Not yet. “I don’t know. It’s just never come my way,” he said.

The world of epic and operatic sci-fi fantasy has been redefined since Denis Villeneuve stepped into the arena. Unlike Zack Snyder with his Dceu fiasco, the director has inarguably and ubiquitously revolutionized the genre with his artisanal feature films like Arrival, Dune, and Blade Runner 2049.

Guillermo del Toro is a master of telling strange and creepy stories with a heart, a quality that led to him winning the Academy Award for his movie The Shape of Water. While del Toro has mostly remained far away from the action blockbuster genre since the mid-2010s, it is time the acclaimed director returns with a superhero movie featuring DC’s John Constantine.

Cameras are now rolling on Amazon MGM and Mattel's live-action Masters of the Universe movie in London, and THR brings word on three new additions to the cast.
Agatha All Along's Sasheer Zamata will play Suzie, Double Exposure actor Christian Vunipola will play Hussein, and Eternals stunt performer and The Brothers Sun actor Jon Xue Zhang will play Ram-Man.
Suzie and Hussein are most likely characters created for the movie (there's a good chance they will be friends of Adam on Earth), but Ram-Man should be very familiar to fans of the classic animated series and action figure line.

The first two Dune movies, starring Timothée Chalamet as space messiah Paul Atreides, were giant hits. Much of the thanks should go to director Denis Villeneuve, who is a long-time fan of the Dune books by Frank Herbert and a visionary director behind fantastic sci-fi movies like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Dune has been adapted for the screen before, but something about Villeneuve's movies hit different. It's the perfect project for him.
Frank Herbert wrote six Dune books before he passed away. Villenueve's first two Dune movies cover only the first novel. This year, he'll start filming Dune: Part Three, an adaptation of Dune Messiah, the second novel in Herbert's series. There are some good books after that, but Villeneuve has made clear that he's done with the franchise after Dune: Part Three.

‘Dune: Messiah’ is reportedly due to enter principal photography a year earlier than expected. The upcoming sci-fi sequel - which will be helmed by series director Denis Villeneuve - was anticipated to begin shooting in the summer of 2026, though Deadline has now claimed the filmmaker is planning to roll the cameras in June this year.‘Dune: Messiah’, which will be based on author Frank Herbert’s 1969 book of the same name, is set 12 years after the events of ‘Dune: Part Two’, and follows Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) after his ascension to the throne as Emperor of the Known Universe, only for the religious cult he created around himself to begin to spiral out of his control. Recently, Villeneuve said he felt “inspired” to make another ‘Dune’ movie after he took a break from the franchise following ‘Dune: Part Two’s release in March 2024.Speaking to TheWrap, the 57-year-old director said:...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always benefited from highly skilled and popular actors who bring Marvel comic characters to life. The biggest MCU movies have had massive star power with the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson, and even those who joined the franchise as relative unknowns have launched massive careers thanks to their MCU roles.
The original Guardians of the Galaxy were fairly obscure comic characters by the early 2010s, but the MCU changed that in Phase 2 with the cast's excellent portrayals of Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and plenty of other members that have joined the team over the years. These skilled actors have been involved in many projects across genres and mediums that MCU fans will likely also enjoy, from Parks and Rec to Star Trek to The Walking Dead.

Ryan Gosling. We would watch anything this man is in. Being one of the most celebrated actors today, he has everything going for him. However, back in 2017, when Blade Runner 2049 was released, we were surprised to see the film underperform at the box office despite such positive reviews. As it turns out, Guillermo del Toro has two cents on why this may have happened.

Responsible for some of the finest works in cinema today, Guillermo del Toro knows a thing or two about how the industry works. Giving his point of view on the whole Blade Runner 2049 box office debacle, the filmmaker made a really good point on how budget plays a big role in the film’s performance.

Production is now underway on the live-action Masters of the Universe movie in London, and the first set photos have been shared online.
We recently got a first look at star Nicholas Galitzine in the process of training to take on the lead role of He-Man, and we now have our first look at the actor filming scenes as Prince Adam.
As you can see, Galitzine is sporting that unmistakable He-Man-style hairdo, as well as Adam's signature pink attire. The photos also reveal a first look at the hero's Power Sword... which appears to have been confiscated by the police.
Yes, these snaps also confirm those recent plot rumors that the movie will be partially set on Earth before Adam (presumably) returns to Eternia.
Though official story details have not been disclosed, it seems clear that this adaptation is going to make a pretty major change to the established lore surrounding Prince Adam/He-Man.

Dave Bautista's time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is likely over. The Guardians of the Galaxy actor recently stated that there is only one way he'd consider coming back to the universe as Drax the Destroyer.
Bautista likely disappointed more than a few MCU fans when he told ComicBook.com earlier this week that "Drax is completely closed to me." The actor, who was promoting his new movie In the Lost Lands, shared that the only way he would even consider reprising the Guardians character would be if James Gunn, who wrote and directed all three installments, asked him to come back. "Unless James Gunn called me and asked if I would do something as Drax again, I just wouldn’t be interested. If James called me, which obviously is not gonna happen. He’s doing okay, he’s gone a different route," he explained, referencing Gunn's move to...

Over the past several years, Dave Bautista has done an exceptional job establishing himself as a serious actor. He was largely underestimated when he landed his first major role in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, but he quickly proved to be a stand-out character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He went on to give a brief but memorable performance in the opening moments of Blade Runner 2049 and went on to work with Denis Villeneuve again in the Dune films. He has also done voicework and starred in many other action, comedy, and drama films, like 2023's Knock at the Cabin, a horror-thriller from M. Night Shyamalan. Now, via Deadline, Bautista's next project has been announced: a sci-fi film called Dreadnought, coming from the producers of John Wick.
