Social realism

Ostensibly a murder mystery, THE GENERAL'S MUSTACHE is more of a realist social drama that explores mid 20th century Korea and what made it tick. A couple of detectives delve into a guy's torrid past in order to uncover the reasons behind his mystery death. It's a slow and talky movie that nonetheless possesses a real depth of character and has a lot to say about the place of the individual within a society. It also has much in common with Ralph Ellison's THE INVISIBLE MAN.
