It's official — Westerns are in. After a couple of decades when cowboys have seen diminishing returns on the big screen, the classic film genre has been returning in a big way. That is all thanks in part to Taylor Sheridan and his Yellowstone universe, but also to some great Western remakes, Kevin Costner's epic Horizon saga, and Oscar-winning films like The Power of the Dog. 2024 was a great year for Westerns, but 2025 is shaping up to be a good one, too, and the upcoming film Day of Reckoning is joining the ranks. The new film stars Billy Zane, Zach Roerig, Cara Jade Myers, Scott Adkins, and Trace Adkins. Directed by Shaun Silva, written by Travis J. Opgenorth, produced by Ali Afshar, Christina Moore, Daniel Aspromonte, and Don Lepore. Esx is bringing the film to theaters on March 28, 2025. Check out the synopsis below:

Ah, the Duttons, television’s favorite morally ambiguous ranching dynasty. They’ve got the land, the legacy, and an unsettlingly casual approach to problem-solving that often involves, well… eliminating the problem altogether.
Whether it’s trespassers, rival ranchers, or pesky outlaws with bad attitudes, one thing is certain, if you cross a Dutton, you better hope you have an escape plan or a very solid life insurance policy.
Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton in 1923 | Credits: Paramount+
But here’s the thing, why are the Duttons so naturally inclined to, let’s say, remove obstacles permanently? Is it the fresh Montana air? The unrelenting pressure of keeping the ranch intact? Or is it simply that once you start throwing people into a conveniently placed abyss, it’s hard to stop? Well, thanks to 1923 Season 2, we finally have some answers. And trust us, they’re just as dramatic as you’d expect.

This article contains spoilers for "1923" season 2, episode 4.
"Yellowstone" failed to address several unanswered questions before the show's fifth and (presumably) final season wrapped up. The good news, though, is that Taylor Sheridan's Western franchise keeps producing spin-offs that fill in some of the blanks regarding those mysteries, with "1923" season 2, episode 4, "Journey the Rivers of Iron," finally explaining the origins of the Dutton family's beloved "train station" dumping ground.
For those who are unfamiliar with "Yellowstone" lore, the train station is a canyon located in an unpopulated county between Montana and Wyoming. With no people around, it's the perfect place to dispose of the bodies of the countless folks who've paid for crossing the Dutton family and getting in the way of its interests. "Yellowstone" establishes that the Duttons have used the spot for generations -- but they weren't the first individuals to discover it.

1923 Season 2: Taylor Sheridan’s Poor Writing For Two Characters Is Ruining Yellowstone’s Grand Saga
Taylor Sheridan’s successful Western drama 1923 is a prequel to Yellowstone and a sequel to 1883. The series stars Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford, Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, and others in a story that follows the Duttons in 1923. The family faces numerous challenges during the drought, Prohibition, and early stages of the Great Depression while trying to save their beloved ranch.

Editor's note: The below interview contains spoilers for 1923 Season 2 Episode 4.Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone prequel series 1923 has finally returned for its second season, and as the initial episodes reveal, things haven't gotten any easier for the Dutton family. Not only do Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Helen Mirren) have to navigate the continuing dangers of winter on both their livestock and their livelihoods, but they also have another threat on their hands in the form of ruthless businessman Thomas Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), whom they owe a considerable debt to in the form of the Yellowstone Ranch's back taxes. To top it all off, this week's episode, "Journey the Rivers of Iron," features a major (and dangerous) surgery for Yellowstone foreman Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty), who's been dealing with a debilitating head injury ever since being beaten by police in the Season 1 finale during his arrest for miscegenation.

1923 continues to bring more of the Dutton's struggles to life in another exceptional episode. Episode 3 was a powerful episode and a difficult story to follow, but by focusing more on Jacob and Cara and the primary Dutton's struggles,1923 manages to maintain momentum moving into the back half of the season. Episode 4 seemingly acts as a turning point for not just the Duttons in Montana, but likely for how the entire rest of the season may play out going into the final conflict with Creighton and Whitfield.

Whitfield is addressing some men about modern American conveniences. They no longer use their hands to get rich but their minds. But where will they spend their money and free time?
They’ll travel wherever they can experience a world opposite of their own. Montana is the perfect place to do it. Selling an experience is an infinite resource that costs nothing to create because it already exists.
(Trae Patton/Paramount+)
He speaks of three concurrent phases: an airport, paved roadways through Paradise Valley, and a winter park resort that will keep people coming year-round to ice skate, toboggan, and ski. The men laugh at him. Why suffer through winter only to vacation there?
The man thinks vacationing on a beach is much different than snow.

Spencer and Alex’s journeys continue on 1923 Season 2 Episode 4, as Zane undergoes a risky medical procedure without anesthesia.
These Yellowstone sequels are big on journeys but not so much on meaningful storytelling.
So much of 1923 is traveling from one place to another, and it’s kind of exhausting. It sometimes feels like we’re running mad but standing still at the same time, as if we’re traveling on a treadmill.
(Lauren Smith/Paramount+)
But before we get into the Duttons of it all, it’s worth noting that we were stuck with more from Donald Whitfield and his crew and a surprisingly short segment involving Teonna Rainwater.
The staccato nature of this show’s storytelling, taking us all over the world and back in one episode during 1923 Season 1 and visiting entirely different states with barely overlapping stories in 1923 Season 2, isn’t my favorite.

Working with Hollywood legends like Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren is a dream for many actors, but it can also make them nervous. For Michelle Randolph, it was a whirlwind of self-doubt and imposter syndrome.

How can Taylor Sheridan juggle it all?
That’s usually asked about the creator regarding how he’s conceived and aired eight scripted TV series in a little more than six years, starting with “Yellowstone” and including “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” and “Lioness.” It also applies to his current and most sprawling series, “1923.” This show, a prequel to “Yellowstone,” currently balances at least seven storylines, all featuring characters on their own journeys in different settings and largely separated from one another. Managing just the set-building alone seems a Herculean task, even if several of the storylines are shot on Sheridan’s sprawling 6666 Ranch in Texas.
What’s impressive is how all of these are built around characters so compelling that you can’t wait to “check in” on what’s happening in the next storyline — and Sheridan always leaves you wanting more, with most storylines not taking...

1923 Season 2 finally proves why Taylor Sheridan is hailed as one of the best TV writers in the game. To be fair, Sheridan has made a name for himself with his groundbreaking work for years.

We’ve always believed that a good story should be like a finely tuned orchestra—every note harmonizing perfectly. But in the case of 1923 Season 2, it feels like Taylor Sheridan might have handed the baton to the wrong conductor.
Sure, the Spencer-Alexandra storyline is filled with drama, hardship, and intense moments, but isn’t that just a small cog in the larger wheel of what 1923 fans truly crave? After all, it’s the Dutton family dynamic that makes us tick. Right?

We’re not just tuning in for Spencer and Alexandra’s seemingly never-ending journey to Montana. What we want to see is an unfiltered interaction between the Duttons once they’re on the ranch. Sheridan’s obsession with their reunion could leave little room to explore the deeper familial ties, and that’s a tragedy.

Taylor Sheridan is his own master, delivering epic pieces of the wild, wild West with iconic plotlines beyond anyone’s craziest imagination. The currently ongoing 1923 is yet another addition to the list, with a mastermind and creative visionary like Harrison Ford starring among the prominent characters to continue the Dutton prequel saga.

In fact, when it comes to working with Sheridan, even Ford put down his only rule that he ostensibly carries forward in pretty much every single one of his pieces: Asking for rewrites where he felt the dialogue didn’t feel appropriate for his character—something that Kevin Costner inevitably couldn’t do for his Yellowstone lore with Sheridan.
Harrison Ford put down his only rule while working with Taylor Sheridan
One of the biggest reasons why Taylor Sheridan managed to become such a big name in Hollywood within such minimal time is his epic scripts.

There’s a saying I once heard: “In order to understand someone’s pain, you have to walk a mile in their shoes.” Well, Julia Schlaepfer, who plays the resilient Alex in 1923, truly took a stroll through some harrowing emotional territory in the second season of this Yellowstone prequel. Watching her struggle on screen, you can feel the emotional weight.
It’s not just acting; it’s living through a brutal, gut-wrenching reality that’s impossible to ignore. And, boy, was it tough to watch—yet somehow necessary for the greater narrative of this universe.

What really got under my skin wasn’t just the sheer intensity of the scenes themselves but how creator Taylor Sheridan knew exactly what was coming. He didn’t just sit down and pen this scene—he meticulously prepared Julia Schlaepfer for it, almost like a coach gearing up his player for a brutal match.

Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama Yellowstone has become iconic for many reasons, from its memorable characters to the drama surrounding its prolific creator and stars. The final season of the show was overshadowed by tensions between Sheridan and Kevin Costner, who departed ahead of its conclusion.

With that in mind, I’ve assembled a bundle of three streaming services that will allow you to stream local news options for less than $30 per month. Keep reading and see what’s in the bundle to find out how much you can save over an expensive pay-tv subscription.
What’s the best budget streaming bundle for watching local news?

Does anyone else feel like everything is going a little Too well for everyone right now?
This season is about everyone figuring out what comes next for them, and while the optimism is great, it’s starting to feel like the calm before the storm.

Even the brightest stars can lose their shine if they stop looking at the sky. As a long-time admirer of Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling brilliance, this feels like the right lens through which to view his recent work. There was a time when his shows, from Yellowstone to Landman, were the kind of stories that made you feel something deep in your bones.
But much like a musician who hits a sour note, Sheridan’s latest endeavors seem to echo past missteps, leaving fans yearning for the sharp, compelling narratives we once cherished.

Much like the growing dissatisfaction during Yellowstone Season 5, it feels like Sheridan’s 1923 Season 2 is suffering from an overdose of filler. Characters are popping in and out without much purpose, and we can’t help but wonder if the show is just padding itself for the sake of it.

The first season of 1923 shocked everyone with its great storytelling, all thanks to Taylor Sheridan, the genius creator behind the lens. So, evidently, the same anticipation took place when the show came back for a second season with an even more complex story about the fictional Dutton family. But along with everyone else, the fans are eager to know how the story of Donald Whitfield will end in the show.
The wealthy businessman has positioned himself as the most dangerous enemy of the Duttons and has used everything in his power to push them to the brink. But just like any other villain out there, fans are wondering what his end will be like in Season 2.

1923star Julia Schlaepfer reflects on Alex Dutton's harrowing Ellis Island experience in the latest episode of Taylor Sheridan's hit Western. After a perilous journey abroad, Alex is eager to reunite with Spencer Dutton when she finally arrives in New York. However, her happiness is short-lived as she's forced to strip down and forgo the cold, unforgiving immigration process at Ellis Island. 1923 season 2, episode 3 delivers some of the series' darkest scenes while portraying the harsh reality of entering the United States in the early 20th century, particularly as a woman traveling alone.
In an interview with TV Insider, Schlaepfer breaks down the challenges behind her character's violating experience at Ellis Island. Alex suffers a brutal medical exam where one of the doctors sexually assaults her. Even in the face of such horror, Alex’s resolve remains unshaken—she is determined to reach the Dutton family in Montana at any cost.

Dennis Quaid is set to mark a haunting role in his filmography: Playing a serial killer. Starring alongside Annaleigh Ashford, upcoming Paramount+ series “Happy Face” follows real-life murderer Keith Jesperson, also known as the Happy Face Killer. Ashford stars as Jesperson’s daughter Melissa Reed Aka Melissa G. Moore, who is forced to confront the carnage caused by her father during the trial of another alleged killer.
“Keith Jesperson is a serial killer,” Quaid told IndieWire of his character at Paramount+’s The Lodge in SXSW. “He killed eight women in five years. He was also a father to Annaleigh’s character, Melissa, and she had a very close relationship. Then she found out at the age of 15, when he was caught, that he was a serial killer. How do you reconcile having that loving dad, with this monster, what he did? That’s basically what the show ‘Happy Face’ is about.

Coming off of wildly popular stints at SXSW in Austin, Texas the past two years, Paramount+ returned to the festival once more to take over The Clive Bar with their activation titled The Lodge. The three-story space invites attendees to explore the wide-ranging world of all that the streamer (as well as Paramount+ with Showtime) has to offer on its current and upcoming slate.
Upon walking into the space, it felt very much like a mix between a ski-lodge in Sundance and what you would expect the “Yellowjackets” girls to inhabit. Along with that show, now in its third season, The Lodge boasts interactive spaces for the ever-popular “Gladiator II,” “Dexter: Original Sin,” “School Spirits,” “1923,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” and “Survivor.” New series “Happy Face,” starring Annaleigh Ashford and Dennis Quaid, also had a mirrored maze to navigate through ahead of its world premiere at the festival on...

Brandon Sklenar has opened up about wearing the same pin as his It Ends With Us director Justin Baldoni.
The actor, who played Blake Lively’s character’s love interest in It Ends With Us, had internet sleuths investigating after he showed up to the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscars party sporting a pink, floral brooch that appeared to match the one Baldoni wore to the It Ends With Us premiere in New York.
Amid the ongoing legal dispute between Lively and Baldoni over what happened on the set and during promotion of the film, observers speculated about what message was behind Sklenar’s choice to match Baldoni’s premiere accessory.
But now Sklenar says there was no hidden meaning behind his sartorial selection.
“Honestly, no. I wish I could say there was,” Sklenar told People, when asked if there was any hidden meaning behind the pin, at the 2025 SXSW premiere of his new movie The Drop.

This was a dark one.
Tracker as a series is far from light, but some cases take on a much more sinister tone than others and this one was about as sinister as it gets.
Colter was on the hunt for a missing mother, and the person who took her was decapitating victims, which meant time was truly of the essence.
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)
The missing person’s case of Alice Bear was odd from the start, considering the mother put her son to sleep and then just vanished in the middle of the night.
Did she run off? Was she taken? Or was it something else entirely?
All Tracker cases typically start one way and end up somewhere else, and this was no exception, as preliminary findings had Colter believing maybe Alice’s disappearance had something to do with a date gone wrong or even drug addiction.

Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" property is synonymous with violence, tragedy, and cowboying, but at its core, the saga is all about the importance of family. The ever-expanding Western-flavored universe chronicles the Dutton family tree from 1883 until the present day, introducing viewers to various characters from the unit as they fight to protect their land from outsiders. Despite featuring a long lineage of family members, however, there are plenty of things the franchise has yet to reveal about their history, including the mystery behind the grandparents of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner).
Little is known about John's grandparents, but "Yellowstone" season 4's "Phantom Pain" episode reveals that his grandfather lost a leg during the war. With that in mind, it's easy to assume that Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra Dutton (Michelle Randolph) gave birth to John's father, as "1923" establishes...

While "1923" can be criticized for repurposing some unpopular "Yellowstone" storylines, the prequel series is still one of Taylor Sheridan's best shows to date. "Yellowstone" lost its way as the seasons progressed, mostly due to plots that went nowhere or contained holes large enough to ride a wagon train through. The show's inability to live up to one of the franchise's main themes is an egregious error, but "1923" is doing a great job of fixing this shortcoming.
Sheridan's "Yellowstone" franchise deals with the displacement of Native Americans in the United States, but the titular series fails to explore the theme with any substance. For proof, look no further than the journey of Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), who became an afterthought in favor of more Dutton-centric drama throughout that show's five seasons. The originality that he brings to shows like Yellowstone and his attention to detail in period television, especially 1883 and 1923, has elevated Sheridan to the top as a Hollywood creative.

This week’s Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report presents an interesting juxtaposition. The Oscars telecast, on Sunday, March 2, was far and away the most-watched linear program of the week, with 13.1 million households tuning in. While that celebration of movies drew massive viewership, the nominated movies themselves were not big draws over on streaming, where many are currently available across a variety of services.
During the weekend of the Oscars, Feb. 28 to March 2, the most-viewed Best Picture nominee was “A Complete Unknown,” was seen in 182,000 households, likely aided by its Feb. 25 launch on VOD. Meanwhile, eventual Best Picture winner “Anora” was seen in 82,000 households, placing it fifth among the nine nominees.
Now, many of these films may have been seen in theatres during their initial release, and some can expect a bump in the weeks to come. But the main story on streaming this week is TV series, which hold eight of the 10 spots.

Taylor Sheridan knows how to craft intense, gritty Westerns, but 1923 Season 2 is proving that even he can fumble a great character. One standout figure is getting completely sidelined thanks to clunky storytelling and frustrating creative choices.

With all the potential 1923 had to build on its epic first season, it’s pretty baffling to see Sheridan drop the ball like this.

Taylor Sheridan’s handling of female characters is under fire again. 1923 season 2 just pushed Elizabeth Strafford (Michelle Randolph) toward the exit, and fans are calling it wasted potential. Sheridan’s been accused of struggling to write strong female leads — something evident in Yellowstone, Landman, and now 1923.
Elizabeth had plenty of room for character growth. Instead, she spent two episodes screaming helplessly. Between dodging mountain lions,...

Paramount+ has had some recent hits, such as Landman and School Spirits Season 2, and the streaming platform is poised to keep that streak going with Happy Face.
The new crime drama premieres on Thursday, March 20, with a two-episode drop on Paramount+ territories around the globe.
New episodes will air each week through its May 1 season finale.
(Paramount+/Screenshot)
The “season” finale is interesting because the newly released Happy Face trailer reminds me of the many crime dramas that have invaded the small screen in the peak TV era.
More often than not, they’re limited series due to the cases having a clearly defined endpoint that didn’t call for more episodes.

It hasn’t stopped some shows from toying with the idea of more episodes, such as HBO’s Mare of Easttown.
Thankfully, Mare of Easttown has remained a miniseries thus far, but it’s unclear how...

Love it or hate it, 1923 isn’t about to sugarcoat history. Season 2 is doubling down on one of Taylor Sheridan’s most controversial storytelling choices, and Madison Rogers is stepping in to defend it. While some fans argue it’s too brutal, Rogers insists it adds authenticity to the show’s raw, unfiltered depiction of the era.

If Sheridan has taught us anything, it’s that he won’t shy away from the uncomfortable, and 1923 is proving that once again.

The latest episode of 1923 Season 2 caused fans to question the fate of Brian Geraghty's Zane Davis, an important Season 1 character recently reintroduced after missing the Season 2 premiere.
Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone spinoff, 1923, has only been back for its second season for two weeks, but the record-breaking sophomore season is already off to a hot start.
The Season 2 premiere not only caught viewers up with the show's main actors and characters but also introduced a new conflict for the Duttons that will make life even more difficult — an extremely brutal winter.
