Today, Prime Video announced a major development in the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. The streamer revealed through Deadline that none other than '90s heartthrob James Van Der Beek has joined the cast in a recurring role. The Dawson's Creek and Apartment 23 star will share the screen with the new Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree), but at this point we don't know in how many episodes he will participate. A release date for Elle is yet to be announced.
Per Deadline, Van Der Beek will play the city’s new mayoral candidate and current school district superintendent, Dean Wilson. Since the new series covers Elle Woods' high school years, this may suggest that Dean Wilson and the young girl will go head-to-head on different occasions. In the movie series, Elle became known for not catering to people in positions of power, so the series might show how the future lawyer developed her backbone.

Krysten Ritter has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection. Her role is going to be wildly different from the more heroic character she played in Jessica Jones, according to details divulged about her character.
Per Deadline, Ritter will play a murderous role in the upcoming Dexter sequel series. She will reportedly portray "Mia Lapierre," a "renowned sommelier whose alter ego is the 'Lady Vengeance' serial killer." Of course, serial killers often fall prey to Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan, meaning Ritter's Mia could be the next major threat for the titular vigilante. Ritter had recently shared that she was heading to New York to start work on an unspecified project, fueling rumors of a return as Jessica Jones in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, but Deadline has now confirmed that she was referring to Dexter: Resurrection.

The Big Bang Theoryis an incredibly successful show that inspired a whole franchise. With its 12 seasons and two full-blown spin-offs, it's hard to believe this wasn't even going to be the title of the series. At some point in production, The Big Bang Theory was going to be called "Lenny, Penny, and Kenny." As happens with most sitcoms at the time of its creation, writers considered other options when crafting the show we all know and love. The Big Bang Theory could have had very different characters and a much less appealing title, so it's safe to say it all turned out for the better.
People might believe that the title of a sitcom doesn't really affect it, but in the end, it's the audience's first approach to the show. An off-putting title can totally change someone's opinion on watching a new series if they don't have much information about it.

Slickly made high-school movie is packed with slow-motion corridor walks and flawless cheer-squad routines – but it’s hard to get caught up in a plot with so few surprises
Dallas (Siena Agudong) is a hot cheerleader with dreams of auditioning for CalTech. Drayton (Noah Beck) is a cute star quarterback whose dad is adamant he follow in his footsteps and attend his alma mater with a football scholarship. Surely this very well-matched chalk and chalk couple will never overcome their complete lack of differences and get together? Only time will tell.
A slickly made, nicely shot high-school movie adapted from a Wattpad story with an Instagram-ready cast, the biggest surprise here is James Van Der Beek popping up in a thankless role as the humourless dad. We know from The Rules of Attraction and Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 that Van Der Beek’s tastes are on the edgier side,...

When "New Girl" ended in 2018 after seven seasons, it undoubtedly left a hole in people's hearts. Since 2011, people tuned into Fox every week to see what mishaps and misunderstandings Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) and her roommates would get into. There's no shortage of incredible "New Girl" episodes to watch, and if you go back, you may find new things to appreciate. Even if you don't, it's hard to get tired of watching an episode like "Background Check" where everyone's eccentricities are dialed up to 11.
Naturally, you may be ready to fill said heart-hole with something new yet oddly similar. "New Girl" is far from the only sitcom about a group of friends figuring out what to do in life while getting into copious high jinks. Or maybe you want something with a quirky female lead who's prone to burst into song. There can only ever be one "New Girl," but...

Emmy-nominated duo Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna are teaming up to bring an acclaimed Australian comedy to American audiences with Laid. If you’re looking to get Laid this weekend, Peacock’s newest series has you covered.
Adapted from an Australian series by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, who previously collaborated on the far too short-lived Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23, the acerbic romantic comedy stars Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as Ruby, a narcissistic event planner in her early 30s desperately seeking a real connection when she learns that her former lovers have all begun dying in unusual ways. This strange but shocking revelation quickly leads Ruby and her true crime-loving best friend Aj (a scene-stealing Zosia Mamet) down a twisty path as they attempt to figure out what’s going on, one that may or may not also lead Ruby on a journey of self-discovery. A quick and highly bingeable eight episodes, Laid is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Executive producers and writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna may have another hit on their hands with the launch of their Stephanie Hsu-led dark comedy Laid, which premieres on Peacock December 19. But the creative duo’s bond stems back to the fabulous and cancelled-too-soon 2012 ABC comedy Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, which starred Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Dreama Walker (Doubt), and James Van Der Beek as, well, himself (sort of).
In a recent interview with MovieWeb, the duo admitted that Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 was ahead of its time. “It's still my favorite show that I've ever been on staff for,” said Bradford McKenna, who was one of the producers of the show created by Khan. The American education system has a rather regrettable take on sex-ed: “If you have sex you will die.” The trope has been mined for comedy before, but few shows take the premise as seriously as Laid. The romantic comedy series starring Stephanie Hsu lands on Peacock this week with its darkly funny premise. Hsu gets another nuanced and exciting role to continue her ascent. Meanwhile, co-star Zosia Mamet delivers her funniest performance since Girls. Together, they lift the comedy series thanks to their chemistry and zany performances.

It wasn't great to be a Millennial at the top of the 2010s. Not that other folks were having a ball, but by then people of that generation had spent a solid decade growing rapidly disillusioned with the state of the world upon coming of adult age. They and millions of others had also barely gone through the worst economic recession in the lifetimes of practically anyone still alive today. Plus, on top of somehow being both broke and utterly reckless spenders (or so the "Millennials are killing [Insert Name of Industry]" think-piece cottage industry at the time would have you believe), most of them were still in their early to mid-20s, which is a trying age for anyone who's ever lived.

Among the original emotions, Inside Out 2 saw a change in the voice behind Disgust, with Lapira stepping into the role previously voiced by Mindy Kaling.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Lapira discussed her approach to voicing Disgust after Kaling’s iconic portrayal in the first Inside Out film. Lapira noted that her focus was not on mimicking Kaling’s voice but on capturing the essence of Disgust’s character—someone who is judgmental, protective, and almost always measuring...

James Van Der Beek is sharing further insight into his colorectal cancer diagnosis, which he announced in November.
The Dawson’s Creek star stopped by Good Morning America on Tuesday, where he opened up about how he is feeling following his diagnosis and how he felt when he first heard he had cancer.
“Physically, I’m great. I’m feeling really good,” he told ABC News’ Robin Roberts. “Emotionally, you know, it’s a lot. It’s really a ride.”
He told the broadcaster that when he first learned he had cancer, he was “in shock.” He thought it was just a routine colonoscopy, and he was in great cardiovascular shape, eating what he thought was healthy and had a whole idea of what his upcoming year was going to look like.
“It felt like a nightmare, honestly, at first, that I couldn’t quite wake up from,” Van Der Beek said.

Having a favorite show canceled feels a bit like getting the rug pulled from underneath, or having a movie cut off half an hour before the end. Just as the characters become familiar, and just as the story starts to get more layered and interesting, they're unceremoniously taken away. It stings even more if the TV show ends on a cliffhanger, or a promising future setup.
Nowadays, if a show on a streaming service doesn't get the desired streaming numbers in the first week, it's likely it won't get a second season; Netflix is a particular scourge of shows canceled too soon. Official social media accounts get flooded by fans pleading for their series to get picked back up, and petitions are promptly written up. My Lady Jane and Kaos are some of the more recent casualties of this brutal trend, leading to infuriating cliffhangers. There have been shows that...

Not judging a book by its cover is a clich, but sometimes not judging a TV show by its title is good advice. Whether its a sitcom with a misleading title or an action-based show that has an uninspiring title, there are many TV shows with titles that dont quite match the content.
When the title isnt appropriate for the subject matter of a show, there is a possibility that it will struggle to find an audience. Many otherwise deserving shows can then end up being less successful than they otherwise might have been with a different, more enticing title.

Romantic comedies are about to get a delightfully dark twist with Peacock’s upcoming series Laid.

It's been 27 years since Stargate Sg-1 began, and the talented cast has continued entertaining audiences in the years since the series concluded. The hit sci-fi TV show started with its first season in 1997 and featured stars Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge as the titular team Sg-1. This cast continued playing their respective characters for the following years until Stargate Sg-1 ended with season 10 in 2006 (though some of the stars took breaks here and there). Of course, this wasn't the end of their careers.
2024 marks 18 years since Stargate Sg-1 season 10 came to a close, but the age of streaming means that more audiences than ever have found and fallen in love with the show. Stargate checks all the boxes for a great sci-fi, full of campy action, heroic sacrifices, leagues of aliens (both good and evil), and a team of lovable characters. What if “It Follows” was a romantic comedy?
That’s something like the premise for the upcoming series “Laid,” which premieres on Peacock this holiday season. The streaming service released a trailer for the sitcom on Wednesday.
“Laid” stars Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) as Ruby, who realizes that her former lovers are all mysteriously dying in unusual ways. With the help of her friend Aj (Zosia Mamet), she goes back through her “sex timeline” of exes and past hookups to find out why it’s happening and stop it once and for all. It’s one thing to have a self-deprecating sense of humor. It’s something else entirely to appear on a sitcom as an incredible a-hole version of yourself. While plenty of stars have cameoed as themselves over the years — hell, James Van Der Beek had a regular role as James Van Der Beek on Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 — here are five celebrities who played unflattering versions of their real-life personas…

There used to be a time when ABC bet on new comedic proposals. They were happier times. Through rocky roads, shows like Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23 and Cougar Town graced our screens with elements that departed from the expectations of a regular sitcom. David Caspe's Happy Endings was also a part of this standout lineup. A show about a group of six friends in an urban setting drew the obvious comparisons to Friends and How I Met Your Mother, but that was always kind of the point being a self-aware comedy that poked fun at the stereotypes set by those that came before.

CBS's Ghosts outperformed rival show Shining Vale in ratings and popularity. Shining Vale struggled with balancing its horror and comedy elements. Ghosts maintained a confident tone and successfully parodied horror tropes.
Although CBSs Ghosts is deservedly loved by critics and viewers alike, the hit sitcoms success may have contributed to another rival shows swift demise. It is always tough when two competing TV shows or movies stumble on the same central conceit. In 2015, both Scream Queens and MTVs Scream took a stab at reigniting the self-aware teen slasher craze of the 90s. A few years earlier, 2 Broke Girls and Dont Trust The ***** In Apartment 23 told the stories of young New York heroines who struggled to make ends meet with the help of a cynical, sardonic friend.

Krysten Ritter is open to reprising her role as Jessica Jones in the MCU. Marvel Studios considers all Netflix shows as MCU canon, including Jessica Jones. Ritter now leads Orphan Black: The New Echoes, a sci-fi thriller series set in the same universe as the original Orphan Black.
Krysten Ritter is ready to bring Marvel antihero Jessica Jones to the MCU. While there's no official news of a Jessica Jones revival, Ritter is all in to reprise the role. The actress portrayed the titular character in Netflix's Jessica Jones for three seasons from 2015 to 2019, and now that Netflix's Daredevil actors are making their way to Marvel's Cinematic Universe, some fans are wondering whether Jessica Jones will follow suit. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, while discussing new series Orphan Black: The New Echoes, Ritter shared:

Mindhunter, a thrilling mix of fact and fiction, was canceled right as it became truly great due to its large budget. Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 was a cult favorite ahead of its time but was canceled just as it was hitting its stride. The Oa's unique blend of genres and narrative development was cut short by cancelation right when things were getting interesting.
It can sometimes take a while for a TV show to hit its stride, and sadly, this became even more disappointing when, once it did, the show got prematurely canceled. This development was nothing new and has been sadly happening for decades as audiences continually voiced their concern that studios and streaming services dont give TV shows enough time to develop before deciding to pull the plug entirely. It’s now been 15 years since Krysten Ritter’s Breaking Bad arc came to a tragic, series-altering end. But that eight-episode run in season two of the beloved AMC series continues to bear fruit for the actor.
Last night, she made her return to the home network of Breaking Bad as the star of Orphan Black: Echoes — a spinoff of Tatiana Maslany’s mothership series that picks up 37 years later. Created by Anna Fishko, Ritter’s new character, Lucy, instead of being a clone, was recently printed into existence by a four-dimensional printer. As usual, Krysten Ritter delivers another intense, action-packed series that balances human experience with that special spark that defines what makes life worth living in Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1 Episode 1.
The first episode of the series opens the world up to the audience in the same way it does Ritter's character, Lucy.
We're brought in slow and softly to help ease the information given to us, and like Lucy, audiences could feel the tension build as questions quickly piled up about what is going on, putting viewers practically in the Pov.

Orphan Black: Echoes features a new cast of characters in the same universe as the original series, set in 2052. In trying to chronicle the times we were living a decade ago, a new sitcom dealing with the impact of social media was released on ABC. Selfie, from Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek, put Karen Gillan’s Eliza Dooley, a social media addict, in the way of John Cho’s Henry Higgs, in an attempt to shake off her superficiality and make her a better person. Selfie was many things: a satire, a journey of self-discovery, an adaptation of My Fair Lady/Pygmalion, a workplace sitcom, a romantic comedy, and – probably its dooming quality – ahead of its time. The show’s broadcast was abruptly cut short because of dwindling ratings. The remaining episodes were dumped on Hulu and the 13-episode first season turned out to be the complete series run. It joins the one-season (or two) cancelled-too-soon roster where we can find comedy gems like Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23,...

A new report in Variety lays out a detailed argument from British screenwriter Simon Stephenson alleging that the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Focus Features’ widely praised “The Holdovers” is extremely similar to his own 2013 Black List spec script, “Frisco” — and that, according to Stephenson, “Holdovers” director Alexander Payne likely read that script.
“The Holdovers” has only one credited screenwriter: David Hemingson, who was an entertainment lawyer before becoming a TV writer and producer in the late ’90s, working on shows such as “Just Shoot Me!,” “Kitchen Confidential,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23.” “The Holdovers” is his first produced feature.
IndieWire has reached out to Focus, WGA West, and to reps for Payne, Hemingson, and Stephenson, but has not yet received a response.
Stephenson is credited as a co-writer on Pixar’s “Luca” and received an “additional material” writing credit for “Paddington 2.” Working Title is developing his novel,...

Peacock is ready to get Laid.
The NBCUniversal-backed streamer has handed out a straight-to-series order for Laid, a comedy starring Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and from writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna.
Khan (Young Rock, Always Be My Maybe) and McKenna (Son of Zorn) are writing and exec producing the series for Universal Television, where the former’s Fierce Baby is based with an overall deal.
Laid revolves around a woman who finds out that her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her “sex timeline” to confront her past in order to move forward. Peacock says Laid is a “f—ked up rom-com where the answer to ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.’”

Filmmaker Alexander Payne doesn’t exactly have the corner on curmudgeonly Paul Giamatti performances, or unexpected road trip movies that result in deeply emotional bonds, or stories about found families, or even tales about high school teachers who really, really need to get their lives in order. Still, those do tend to be his most recognizable hallmarks.
They’re all on display in his latest, the Christmastime dramedy “The Holdovers,” which stars Paul Giamatti as, yes, a curmudgeonly high school teacher who needs to get his life in order, and ends up (sort of) doing that by way of an unexpected road trip and the forging of a found family (including Da’Vine Joy Randolph and newbie Dominic Sessa).
“The Holdovers” sounds like pure Payne, right? It is, but it’s also a David Hemingson effort, with the longtime television writer picking up his first film credit with the script, which...

More than three and half years have gone by since it was announced that Krysten Ritter would be re-teaming with Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchaka Khan (who went on to create Fresh Off the Boat after Don’t Trust the B- ended) for a dark comedy series based on author/stand-up comedian Charley Warady’s novel Serial Killers Anonymous. But while Khan has gone on to direct two feature films since that announcement – the rom-com Always Be My Maybe and the time travel slasher Totally Killer – there hasn’t been any further word on Serial Killers Anonymous. The Hollywood Reporter decided to ask Khan about the project while she was doing press for Totally Killer, and she told them there’s still a chance the dark comedy series could happen.
Khan was asked, “In 2020, it was reported that you and Krysten Ritter were reuniting for a dark comedy/serial killer series.

Totally Killer director Nahnatchka Khan has quietly become one of the preeminent comedic voices in town.
As the creator of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and Fresh Off the Boat, Khan took her sensibilities to feature films in 2019, helming the well-received Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. The rom-com, which starred Khan’s frequent collaborators Ali Wong and Randall Park, was embraced by 89 percent of critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and managed to make an impact in an overcrowded streaming market. Keanu Reeves’ role as a version of himself and his subsequent kiss-blowing meme certainly factored into Always Be My Maybe’s success, and it’s become one of the go-to examples of how Netflix has kept the rom-com alive in an era where the major studios no longer prioritize the genre.
