Game of Thrones (2011)
Game of Thrones: Dunk and Egg Prequel in the Works at HBO
Game of Thrones (2011)
One spinoff of Game of Thrones is not enough for HBO.

The premium cabler is reportedly developing a prequel based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas about Dunk (aka Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Aegon V Targaryen).

Variety first reported the exciting news, but there has been no official comment from HBO.

It is the third spinoff to land at HBO since the hit original series ended its eight-season run in 2019.

House of the Dragon nabbed a formal series order last year and will follow the Targaryen family, as told in another of Martin's novels.

However, the cast only took shape in recent months, with Matt Smith (Doctor Who) playing Prince Daemon Targaryen and Paddy Considine (The Outsider) as King Viserys.

Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) is also on board as Alicent Hightower, the Hand of the King’s daughter, and Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, King Viserys’ eldest child.

‘Canvas’ Director Frank E. Abney III Talks First Time Seeing Himself On Screen, Crafting “Therapeutic” Animated Short & His Mission In Transitioning To Features
Image
With his first large-scale, animated short, Canvas, director Frank E. Abney III channeled the pain of a major loss early in his life into a work of art.

Emerging from a moment when Abney found himself stuck in a “creative rut,” the film centers on a wheelchair-bound grandfather who lives in solitude, following the loss of his beloved wife. In the aftermath, the one-time artist must summon the strength to return to his work as a painter, reconnecting with his family, and also with his one true love, on the canvas of his latest piece.

For Abney, creating Canvas was not only a form of therapy, allowing him to process a profound life experience. It was also an opportunity to amplify the voices of Black artists in animation, both on screen and behind the scenes.

After working at Pixar for seven years—his last credit as an animator being Pete Docter...

‘The Pack’ Canceled At Amazon After One Season
Image
Amazon has canceled canine competition series The Pack after one season.

The streamer has decided against renewing the series, which was hosted by Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn and her dog Lucy, for a second season.

It comes after the ten-part series debuted in November.

People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) condemned the show, saying that “animals are individuals – not props for movies and TV shows” but an Amazon spokeswoman said that the charity’s statement did not influence the cancelation decision.

The show, which was described as The Amazing Race with dogs, was produced by eOne-owned Naked and Afraid producer Renegade 83 and Amazon Studios.

It featured twelve teams of dogs and their humans on an epic adventure across multiple continents. In each locale, the human and dog duos went through a series of challenges, designed with a team of accredited veterinarians and certified dog experts that also...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Fans Want King Conan Now More Than Ever
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger drawing his Conan the Barbarian sword in a recent video have fans clamoring for a King Conan movie now more than ever. This week, the veteran actor and former California governor took to social media to post a seven-minute video addressing the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. A poignant message, the video was viewed more than 36 million times with over a million likes on Twitter.

Of course, one of the biggest takeaways Arnold Schwarzenegger fans got from the video was that he referenced his classic role as Conan the Barbarian. Literally drawing out the character's mighty sword, Schwarzenegger uses the blade to stress his point. "Here's the thing about swords. The more you temper a sword, the stronger it becomes," Arnold explains, suggesting that democracy had a lot in common with the steel of the Conan sword.

Conan's weapon making a cameo in the video was...

Does Marvel’s New Spider-Man Costume Point to a Black Widow Villain Connection?
Image
Ah, the new superhero costume reveal. That thing where the comic companies muck with some of their most iconic visuals to get a rise out of the fans, get eyes on their product, hopefully tell some kind of story with it, then go back to the status quo. Just now I’m getting memories of Norm MacDonald on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, breaking from the script to openly complain about Electric Blue Superman.

While most of the time, these new looks get rather negative reactions, they at least happen for a reason. When Batman was redesigned in the ’90s to have the ugliest, most spike-ridden armor imaginable, it was part of a narrative about how Jean-Paul Valley represented what Batman shouldn’t be. When Flash Thompson Venom looked like some kind of hulky Ben 10 creature during his time as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it...

Saved By The Bell: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Zack
Jessica King (2011)
His cheeky smirk and blonde locks defined a generation in the '90s, making Zack Morris one of the most popular characters in Saturday Morning programming and the King of Bayside High. During the five-season run of Saved By The Bell (and later two seasons of Saved By The Bell: The College Years), he schemed and plotted to have as much fun as possible while doing as little homework as possible, yet somehow graduated at the top of his class.

Looking back on Zack's reign, there are a lot of inconsistencies with his character, from unwarranted scholastic achievement, to somehow maintaining friendships with classmates he treated like dirt. Tessa Thompson Teases Valkyrie’s Love Story In Thor: Love And Thunder
Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie quickly ascended to fan favorite status after making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Thor: Ragnarok, and the actress is being positioned for an even bigger role in the sequel. Natalie Portman might be returning to the franchise in a major way when Jane Foster inherits Mjolnir in Love and Thunder, but she’ll still have to kneel before Thompson’s new King of Asgard.

Chris Hemsworth’s title hero took a step back from the monarchy after choosing to forge his own path and jet off into deep space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, tasking Valkyrie to oversee his former kingdom. We know that she’s now on the search for a queen, something that fans can’t wait to see, and in a recent interview, the actress teased her upcoming love story.

“It’s really, really, really fun. I’m really excited. I...

The Rock Reportedly Wants To Return As Scorpion King In New Mummy Movie
Image
It was recently announced that Dwayne Johnson would be rebooting The Scorpion King through his Seven Bucks Productions company, with the new spin on the story set to take place in the modern day. The 2002 movie marked Johnson’s first lead role in a feature film while he was still a full-time professional wrestler, and it did solid business at the box office after raking in close to $180 million on a $60 million budget.

The Scorpion King was a cheesy B-tier adventure that wouldn’t have been out of place during Ray Harryhausen’s heyday back in the 1960s, and the sort of inoffensively bland actioner that doesn’t require much of your attention. It did spawn four straight to video sequels, though, all of which were about as terrible as you’d expect, but the world’s highest-paid star must have a soft spot for the material if he’s...

Dwayne Johnson Will Reportedly Have A Role In The Scorpion King Reboot
Image
Though 2017’s Tom Cruise vehicle failed to reboot The Mummy franchise successfully, Universal is having another go at it by relaunching The Scorpion King. The original 2002 spinoff featured Dwayne Johnson as the titular ancient monarch, launching his Hollywood career in the process, and this week we learned that The Rock is producing a modern day remake of the movie, though he won’t be taking on the title role.

That being said, he may still have some part in the film. According to insider Daniel Richtman, despite what initial reports have claimed, the actor will indeed play a role in the Scorpion King reboot and while he doesn’t know exactly how he’ll be involved, he claims that Johnson will show up in front of the camera in at least some capacity.

The Scorpion King was created for 2001’s The Mummy Returns, which marked The Rock’s first ever...

We Almost Got a Godzilla Movie from Twister & Speed Director Jan de Bont
Image
Over several decades worth of working in Hollywood, Jan de Bont directed such action classic as Speed and Twister, and was the cinematographer for a host of iconic thrillers and auctioneers, including Die Hard, Basic Instinct, and The Hunt for Red October. In an interview with Polygon, de Bont revealed he came close to adding another iconic franchise to his name when he met with Japanese producers back in the '90s to make an American version of Godzilla.

"I went to Japan, I met with the people at the studio, and they loved my version. It was basically that the visual effects at the time, and also special effects-like the way they did in the [original] Godzilla movies, which, I had copies of all of them-it became a battle about the budget. So the person who ended up doing the movie said that he could do it for like $40-50 million less than my budget.

The Best Creepy Horror Movies
Image
Creepy isn’t the same as scary.

Of course horror movies can be scary simply by using loud noises and sudden movements to make their audiences jump, but creepy is harder to pull off. To be effectively creepy, a film needs to establish a certain atmosphere; it needs to draw you in and make you care. It needs to give you something to think about when you’re trying to drop off to sleep at night; to make you wonder whether that creaking noise down the hallway was just the house settling or something lurking in the shadows. Creepy stays with you. It gives you goosebumps.

Here are 85 of the best horror movies (in no particular order) to chill your bones. Enjoy the nightmares.

Game of Thrones (2011)
King Harren the Black build Harrenhal strong enough to repel one million men, but he didn't anticipate an attack from above because that wasn't part of the rules. When Aegon Targaryen on Balerion's back came during The Battle of The Conqueror alongside his sisters, they flew over the high walls and burned everyone inside the castle.

B.B. King Estate Announces Official Biopic, Clears Up Wendell Pierce Confusion (Exclusive)
Image
An official biopic of iconic blues musician B.B. King is going into pre-production in 2021, Vassal Benford, chairman of King’s estate, tells Variety. This is a separate project from “The Thrill Is On,” which is a drama about King’s friendship with drummer Michael Zanetis starring Wendell Pierce as King.

Confusion first arose when “The Wire” and “Selma” actor Pierce announced that he would play King via Twitter on Oct. 19. “We are official. Preparation has begun on a film where I will be honored to play the great B.B. King,” Pierce wrote. This led many to assume he would be playing King in a biopic retelling the late singer-guitarist’s life story.

Pierce expanded on the situation on Oct. 22, writing: “The Estate of B.B. King has requested I clarify the film ‘The Thrill Is On’ is not a biopic in the traditional sense. It is a dramatized version...

Enter "Sandman" on Netflix
According to writer Neil Gaiman, production has now started on the Netflix live-action TV series "Sandman", adapting DC Comic's 1998, 75-issue supernatural Vertigo title, created by Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, depicting the 'Dream of the Endless', who rules over the world of dreams:

"In the beginning, Morpheus is entrapped by an occult ritual and held prisoner for 70 years. He finally escapes into the modern day, avenging himself upon his captors and rebuilding his kingdom, which has fallen into disrepair in his absence.

Once Upon a Time in the East: 2020's "Mulan" and Classic Czech Fairy Tales
Image
Above: Mulan (2020)It may seem there’s no bone left to pick with Disney’s live action Mulan weeks after its release. That is, what could I possibly say that would be worthy of press after the movie had been under fire for, among other things, putting a special thanks to a local government operating concentration camps in the credits. That one is, admittedly, hard to beat. To justify the massive oversharing in a review of a Disney film for something as highbrow as Mubi's Notebook, you have to understand that my criticism for Mulan comes from a warm place deep inside my heart. So, I couldn’t just let it be. I had to join in on the group diss track, so that the circle of dissatisfaction can be complete in scale: world-view clashes next to the good ol’ "doesn’t live up to the original,” all the way to my culturally conditioned,...

His feature film producing credits included “What’s the Matter With Helen?,” “Save the Tiger,” “The Other Side of the Mountain,” “Two-Minute Warning,” “The Last Married Couple in America,” “Hot Dog…The Movie,” “The Golden Child,” “Wired,” “Green Card,” the 1994 live-action “The Jungle Book,” the live-action “101 Dalmatians,” its sequel “102 Dalmatians” and “K-19: The Widowmaker.”

“Witness” starred Harrison Ford as a detective protecting a young Amish boy who becomes a target after he witnesses a murder in Philadelphia. The film received eight Oscar nominations,...

‘The Lie’ Review: Joey King Stars in Blumhouse’s Hilariously Overwrought Master Class in Bad Decision-Making
Image
It’s remarkable what packaging can do for a film. In 2018, filmmaker Veena Sud’s second feature film bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival in the starry Galas section — other Galas that year included “First Man,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Widows” — where its heavy subject matter and high-profile placement seemed to earmark the drama as a contender to watch. First filmed under the title “Between the Earth and Sky” and based on a chilling German drama called “We Monsters,” the film promised to explore the psychological fallout of a horrible crime and the corrosive power it inflicts on a crumbling family. Sud had also locked in an exciting cast, including Joey King (pre-Emmy nomination), Peter Sarsgaard, and Mireille Enos, all the better to beef up its seeming gravitas. In short: it sounded good.

Two years after an unimpressive showing at TIFF, “The Lie” finally gets a release, rolling...

Chadwick Boseman Mural Unveiled At Anaheim’s Downtown Disney
Image
Disney honored Chadwick Boseman on Thursday by unveiling a new mural of the Black Panther star at Anaheim’s Downtown Disney. The installation was created by concept artist and former Disney Imagineer Nikkolas Smith.

The inscription on the mural reads:

“As a former Disney Imagineer, I had the honor of working on a major children’s hospital initiative and Avengers Campus as my final two assignments. Seeing Chadwick’s heart for people in-person, and later discovering his courageous battle with cancer, I was inspired to create this tribute to honor his life and legacy. To us, he was and will always be T’Challa. Long Live The King.”

Boseman died August 28 at age 43 after a four-year battle with colon cancer. The actor, in addition to being part of Disney’s Marvel family, also played Thurgood Marshall, James Brown and Jackie Robinson in biopics. His death sent shockwaves around Hollywood and his global fan base,...

Emmy Awards 2020: HBO Dominates, ‘Watchmen’ Triumphs, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Makes History
Image
Holy “Schitt.”

“Schitt’s Creek” made history for tiny Pop TV on Sunday night — just as that network is easing out of the original programming business — by fully sweeping the major Emmy comedy categories, including outstanding series. And meanwhile, who watches the ‘Watchmen’? Turns out, quite a few Emmy voters.

The HBO limited series also dominated this year’s 72nd Emmy Awards, landing 11 total kudos — more than any other program this year — including the outstanding limited series category, best limited series actress for Regina King, limited supporting actor for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and writing for a limited series or movie.

Then there was HBO’s fan favorite drama “Succession,” which won best drama, drama actor (Jeremy Strong), writing for a drama and directing for a drama.

That made it a huge night for the folks at Home Box Office. “Watchmen,” “Succession” and repeat winner “Last Week Tonight” gave HBO plenty of wins on the tally board,...

Beyoncé Proves She's Got Comedic Flair After Corny Joke Time
Jessica King (2011)
Between Black is King, Lemonade and countless other projects of epic proportions, it's obvious to all that Beyoncé is a bona fide icon. One thing she's not, at least according to her eldest daughter Blue Ivy Carter: A comedian. That didn't stop Bey from taking a moment to make a corny joke for a good cause, though. On Saturday, Sept. 19, Beyoncé appeared in a video on the Waco Theater Center Instagram page, in order to participate in her mother, Tina Knowles Lawson's fan-favorite series.  "Why does Snoop Dogg need an umbrella?" the "Formation" singer asked while wearing a casual hoodie. "'Fo'...

Michael Jordan Scores First Emmy For ‘The Last Dance’, Netflix’s ‘Tiger King’ Shut Out In All Six Categories
Image
He’s won six NBA championships and is widely considered the greatest basketball player of all time and tonight Michael Jordan helped the team behind ESPN’s The Last Dance win an Emmy.

The Last Dance beat Netflix’s Tiger King, Hulu’s Hillary, PBS’ American Masters and HBO’s McMillion$ to win Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

The category was one of the most competitive at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys and Jordan, a man who knows how to win, helped the team get over the line.

The battle was particularly competitive this year since Netflix’s series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, starring Joe Exotic and his cast of animal lovers and rivals, was, along with The Last Dance, one of the most talked about series to premiere at the start of the Covid-19 lockdown. Tiger King was shutout of all six categories it was nominated in.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer Urges Federal Aid For Broadway At Times Square Rally
Image
U.S. Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Broadway League renewed the call for dedicated federal funding for Broadway and other New York live venues today, reiterating the push for the $10 billion bipartisan Save Our Stages campaign.

“Today we are fighting hard to keep stages alive, stories told and shows going on,” Schumer said at an outdoor press conference in New York’s theater district near the Tkts Booth. The senator joked that he would demand “a Lion King’s share of federal relief” for Broadway.

Citing the $15 billion contributed by Broadway to New York’s economy last year, the 100,000 jobs, and the millions of tourists, Schumer called live performance “our pulse, our energy.” He said theater was particularly vulnerable to Covid since live venues were “the first to close under Covid and the last to open.”

Last month, Schumer endorsed the $10 billion bipartisan Save Our Stages bill co-authored by Senators Amy Klobuchar,...

‘Tiger King’ goes 0-for-5 at Monday’s Creative Arts Emmys, but it can still win the big prize on Saturday
Image
If you were watching Monday’s live stream of the 2020 Creative Arts Emmys (and we were — watch our reactions here), then you definitely heard the name “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” a lot. But not when it came to the winners. Indeed, Netflix’s behemoth docu-series lost five Emmys at the virtual ceremony: directing, music composition, picture editing, sound editing and sound mixing. However, there’s still hope on the horizon as the big prize — Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series — doesn’t get handed out until Saturday, September 19.

During Saturday’s upcoming ceremony, “Tiger King” will face off against ESPN’s “The Last Dance,” Hulu’s “Hillary,” PBS’s “American Masters” and HBO’s “McMillion$.” None of these contenders took home any Emmys on Monday night, so it’s an even playing field heading into...

‘Dancing with the Stars’ season premiere recap: Who stood out on the first night of a highly unusual season? [Updating Live Blog]
Image
“Dancing with the Stars” premiered its 29th season on Monday night, September 14, with a cast of 15 new celebrities. But that’s not all that’s new this season. In a year rocked by the Covid-19 pandemic, this was far from business as usual. So how did it go on night one? Scroll down for our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments and commentary as they happen.

See‘Dancing with the Stars’ winners, ranked: All 28 Mirror Ball champions from worst to best

Perhaps the biggest difference this season, above and beyond all the health precautions, is the new host. Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews were let go from the series after Bergeron had been with the show for the entirety of its run and Andrews had been alongside him for the last 11 seasons. Tyra Banks, the former host of “America’s Next Top Model” and “America’s Got Talent,” was tapped as their replacement,...

‘Dancing with the Stars’ elimination predictions: Will Carole Baskin be the first to get the axe? Our odds say …
Image
“Dancing with the Stars” has already announced how voting will work for the season 29 premiere, including the fact that no one will be eliminated this week and that this week’s judges’ scores will be combined with next week’s scores and viewer votes to determine the first ouster of the season. But who might that unlucky celebrity be? We’ll have to wait until tonight’s season premiere to find out who will be the most vulnerable based on their scores. But the fans we’ve polled for their predictions think they already know who will be on the chopping block.

As of this writing, basketball legend Charles Oakley gets leading 4/1 odds of being eliminated from the competition first. Indeed, he does have a couple of disadvantages to overcome. At age 56, he would be the oldest Mirror Ball champion in “DWTS” history, though not by much — Donny Osmond prevailed...

VOD Box Office: Universal Thrives, ‘Sniper’ Series Stays Alive, ‘Mulan’ Hides, ‘Cuties’ Rises
Image
“Mulan” (Disney) likely had the greatest revenues of any feature films available in homes this weekend. At $29.99, five times or more costly than alternatives and only in its second week of availability, the big-budget remake more than ever needs PVOD to bolster its chances to recoup its cost. With disappointing initial theatrical results in China ($23 million for its initial weekend), one of the countries where it is not streaming, Disney+ interest becomes even more important.

Perhaps the Chinese fiasco could lead to Disney replicating what Universal did with “Trolls World Tour” after its second weekend of home sales. It was an earnings call (not due for several weeks now though), but that is the one time the studio has released specific numbers on one of its releases ($95 million to that point).

After a weekend where much of the media finally noticed that “Tenet” had its initial domestic gross success overstated...

Nicolas Cage's Joe Exotic Series Is Happening at Amazon
Image
Amazon has secured the rights to the scripted Joe Exotic series starring Nicolas Cage. Netflix's Tiger King caught the world off guard when it was released earlier this year. Exotic, who is still in jail and begging Donald Trump for a pardon, is pretty excited that Cage will be playing him in the upcoming series, which is based on a 2019 Texas Monthly story about the infamous private zoo in Oklahoma. Other Tiger King stars like Carole Baskin and Jeff Lowe will more than likely be included in the show since they are also mentioned quite a bit in the article.

It was announced back in May that Nicolas Cage would be taking on the role of Joe Exotic. The currently untitled series focuses on "an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park even at the risk of losing his sanity." The series will "live in the lion's den with Joe,...

Daniel Kaluuya Books Netflix Adaptation of Time-Bending Sci-Fi Novel ‘The Upper World’
Image
Academy Award nominee Daniel Kaluuya has teamed up with Netflix for a feature film adaptation of British-Nigerian physicist-turned-author Femi Fadugba’s debut novel, “The Upper World,” the first in a planned series of novels that will be published by Penguin UK and HarperCollins US in mid-2021 and early 2022, respectively. Kaluuya will both star in and produce “The Upper World,” which, based on Fadugba’s background and stated intent, suggests a sci-fi story that might be more profound than the average.

“You may not know his name, but once you’ve read ‘The Upper World’ you won’t be able to forget it,” said Tendo Nagenda, Vice President, Netflix Films, in a press statement. “Films can impact and expand the way people see and experience life. ‘The Upper World’ will be one of those films. I’m neither from the place nor ‘time’ depicted in the pages of the debut novel.
