11 Years Later, James Gunn Admits He Had Zero Interest in Casting This MCU Icon: 'This Joker? No Way'
Image
James Gunn said he never imagined Chris Pratt as Guardians of the Galaxy's Star-Lord until the audition. Tricked into meeting Pratt, Gunn immediately realized the actor was perfect for the role.

Guardians of the Galaxy seemed an odd fit for the MCU when it released, what with the film's eclectic ensemble and campy tone. Marvel bet big on James Gunn's space opera, and it paid off; it's now one of the studio's dark horses, spawning two sequels, crossovers, and a holiday special. Speaking with Dax Shepard, Gunn recalled how the movie came together and the rigorous casting. Finding Star-Lord was particularly difficult, and they were getting desperate after 300 actors failed auditions. That's when Chris Pratt came along.

Gunn said Pratt was then "the heavy guy on Parks and Rec" when he walked in for a reading. "The famous story around it is that I didn't want to see Chris because I'm like,...

Chris Pratt's Action Thriller Series Based on a Bestselling Novel Is a Stealth Streaming Hit 3 Years Later
Image
The Terminal List has re-entered Prime Video's top ten this week, three years after its breakout premiere. There's renewed interest in the TV show, all thanks to its gritty action and compelling performances.

The Terminal List is sixth on Prime Video's top ten shows as of July 6 (per FlixPatrol), seventh overall in the streamers' most-watched movies and TV series. Based on Jack Carr's namesake novel, part of The Terminal List's appeal is in its straightforward premise: US Navy Seal James Reece (Chris Pratt) suspects foul play after a botched operation that endangers the lives of his family in the aftermath. Season 1 followed Reece as he hunted down everyone on his hit list, exposing the dark forces pulling the strings.

The Terminal List is loosely adapted from the novel, which is only the first installment in Carr's James Reece series. Series creator David Digilio took creative liberties with the source material,...

Jessica Chastain’s 91% Political Thriller She Insisted Was "Not a Propaganda Film" Just Landed a New Streaming Home
Image
One of the most gripping and controversial political thrillers of the 2010s is headed to Paramount+ — and it features what might be Jessica Chastain’s most commanding performance to date. Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, the Oscar-winning dramatization of the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, arrives on Paramount+ on July 1. The film was a critical powerhouse upon its 2012 release, earning five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and it propelled Chastain as one of the most versatile actors of her generation. Her portrayal of Maya, a tireless CIA operative, earned her a Best Actress nomination and a Golden Globe win. For those who somehow missed this searing account of post-9/11 espionage, this is your moment to catch up on one of the defining films of the decade.

Despite its subject matter and national security focus, Zero Dark Thirty drew just as many questions about its politics as it did praise for its craft.

3 Years Ago, Kim Kardashian Asked the 4th of July to be Canceled: Real Reason Explained
Image
All of America—and basically the entire world—knows how important the Fourth of July is for the country: It’s Independence Day, and it commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. However, reality TV star Kim Kardashian holds a grudge against it.

Around three years ago, the media personality, socialite, and businesswoman all in one, really stood up to ask the Fourth of July to be canceled. But she wasn’t the only major personality to have done that, as numerous other celebrities also joined her in standing for the motion. But, of course, it wasn’t without a very valid reason.

Why Kim Kardashian called for the Fourth of July to be canceled Kim Kardashian. | Credits: @kimkardashian / Ig.

Image
Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Emma Stone are among the rich roster of stars featured in hotly anticipated new movies expected to be launching from Venice Film Festival.

With one month to go until the Lido lineup is unveiled, Venice’s artistic director Alberto Barbera is racing against the clock to assemble the festival’s 82nd edition, slots for which are still in flux. But what’s clear is that there will be no shortage of the type of buzzy titles that make Venice a prime awards season driver.

Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” featuring Dwayne Johnson as two-time UFC heavyweight champ Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino’s #MeToo-themed thriller “After the Hunt” starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri; and “Bugonia,” the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone — who were last...

Kathryn Bigelow Netflix Thriller A House Of Dynamite Sets Release Date And Reveals All-Star Cast
Image
Somehow, it's been eight long years since we last locked in for a new white-knuckle movie from action auteur Kathryn Bigelow. And we'll be honest, cinema just ain't quite the same without the director behind The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Point Break, and more giving us palpitations. And that's where A House Of Dynamite, Bigelow's new — and now officially named — Netflix bound movie, comes in. Set for theatrical release this autumn ahead of a 24 October streaming premiere, Bigelow's big-screen comeback is a tense-sounding political thriller starring Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, and Netflix has just declassified a whole bunch of exciting details on the who's who and what's what of the film.

A House Of Dynamite | Kathryn Bigelow’s first film since 2017 due October
Image
Kathryn Bigelow’s new film is officially called A House Of Dynamite, and we’ll be seeing it this October. More on it here.

Kathryn Bigelow’s next film feels like it’s been a long time coming. After what seemed a long period of development, it was rather dismaying to learn in the spring of last year that Netflix wouldn’t be moving forward with Aurora, an apocalyptic thriller written by Jurassic Park scribe, David Koepp.

As you may know, there was a change in leadership at the streaming platform’s film division around that time, and Bigelow’s project – her first since 2017’s Detroit – was one casualty of many. Mind you, some reports have suggested that Bigelow may have actually exited the project, leading to its cancellation.

Either way, it wasn’t welcome news, but was sweetened by the reveal that Bigelow is collaborating with the streaming platform...

For Those About to Slash, We Salute You: 14 Military Horrors to Stream for Memorial Day
Image
War films are horror films, aren’t they? Both genres explore inevitable death intertwined with moral quandaries and are full of suspense. Come and See is often hailed as one of the scariest films and Son of Saul almost plays like a found footage in Auschwitz.

There is a thin line between the two, but military horror goes further by blending the literal and figurative. This hybrid subgenre repeatedly uses the zombie as the antagonist of choice, a reason identified by Scholar Kevin Wetmore in Post-9/11 Horror in American Cinema: “Zombies cannot be reasoned with, cannot be negotiated with, they seek only to replicate themselves, which also makes them an excellent metaphor for terrorists.”

That said, in recognition of Memorial Day here are 14 military horrors to choose from that aren’t all just about the undead. The POVs range from civilians trapped in military culture, teen cadets, facing barriers as...

15 Best Military TV Shows Of All Time, Ranked
Image
War can seem like an overwhelming topic. The victors rewrite conflicts, human lives are reduced to statistics, and conclusions are taken at face value.

So what happens when we zoom in? We start to see the inner workings of the military, a system comprising a group of individual humans doing their best to work as a unified front. We start to understand the way a soldier thinks. We start to understand why a nation's government might want to battle another nation's government. And we start to reckon with the moral grays of war, the blurring of boundaries leading to the blurring of ethics in ways both micro and macro, especially in our post-9/11 conflicts.

On television, these ideas have become prevalent in the 21st century through different sub-genres, attitudes, and levels of self-reflection. If all of this interests you as a viewer, then look no further as we discover the...

The Sopranos Star Held Denzel Washington by His Collar, Got Too Aggressive in a Heated Scuffle During Crimson Tide
Image
There’s a new biography in the market about The Sopranos lead star James Gandolfini, and it brings up some of his old stories from his film and TV sets. In Jason Bailey’s Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend, the author mentioned Gandolfini’s old scuffle with Denzel Washington on the set of their 1995 movie, Crimson Tide.

The biography shared a report from that time, which suggested that the Enough Said actor got aggressive with Washington during one scene. However, the two actors quickly became friends on the set after that incident.

The film was a submarine action thriller directed by Tony Scott, focusing on the clash between a commanding officer and his new executive officer. The roles were played by Gene Hackman and Washington. Gandolfini played Supply Officer Lt. Bobby Dougherty in the film.

What went down between The Sopranos actor James Gandolfini and Denzel Washington on the film set?...

Apple TV+ snaps up drama series starring award-winning actors
Image
Apple TV+ has ordered a new drama series, and you won't believe who is set to star in it. It's titled The Dealer, and we shared everything there is to know about this upcoming show right below.

Let's be honest. Apple TV+ has some pretty solid shows, but the streaming service does a bad job at promoting its content. With two well-known, award-winning actors leading the show, it has all the potential to draw in a wide audience and become the next breakout hit.

Media Res is the production company behind The Dealer. This company is also behind other Apple TV+ series like The Morning Show, Pachinko and Extrapolations. Lucas Hnath is signed on to write the scripts for...

Jessica Chastain movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
In 2011, it might have seemed like Jessica Chastain emerged out of nowhere as a formidable actress, when she appeared in no less than five movies -- including Best Picture nominees “The Help” and “The Tree of Life” -- and scored her first-ever Oscar nomination. But Chastain worked for years to get to that point, acting in plays from a young age and attending the prestigious Juilliard School. “I struggled for so long to try to create a career,” she told the New York Times in 2017.

In the decade since her breakout year, Chastain has received acclaim for a variety of different roles -- from her Oscar-nominated lead part in “Zero Dark Thirty” to her lauded supporting work in “A Most Violent Year” to even a superhero franchise with “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” She’s worked alongside top filmmakers like Terrence Malick, Kathryn Bigelow, J.C. Chandor, Aaron Sorkin, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott.

Blake Lively’s Worst Romantic Movie Could Only Earn $678K Despite a Promising Story With an Award-Winning Actor
Image
You know when you’re eagerly waiting for something to hit the mark and it almost does, but then it just… doesn’t? That’s how many felt watching Marc Forster’s All I See Is You. It’s like biting into a sandwich with all the right ingredients but somehow still ending up with a bland bite.

The film, starring Blake Lively and Jason Clarke, seemed like it had all the ingredients for success. A compelling story about a woman’s journey through her evolving independence after regaining her sight, with an award-winning actor by her side? It should’ve been an emotional ride. But instead, it ended up being a bit of a snooze fest.

Despite its intriguing premise, All I See Is You earned a meager $678K at the box office against a $30 million production budget.

The Highest-Rated Female-Directed Movies On Metacritic
Image
The directors that popular culture considers to be the greatest of all time — Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, for example — are almost always men. While female directors have spearheaded successful films across genres like superhero, action, and horror, it is men who typically receive the funding, global attention, and prestige projects that cement their legacy in film history.

There have only been 10 women nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, and it wasn't until 2021 that more than one woman was nominated in the category: Chloé Zhao for "Nomadland" and Emerald Fennell for "Promising Young Woman." In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, only three women have won the Best Director prize: Chloé Zhao, Jane Campion, and Kathryn Bigelow.

There are so many incredible films made by visionary female directors, even ones that haven't received Oscar attention. Many of these films appear on Metacritic's highest-rated list. Metacritic celebrates...

Back In Action: Five Movie Directors Making A Welcome Return In 2025
Image
It’s hard to believe now but before taking 12 long years to follow 1987’s Full Metal Jacket with Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, the famously meticulous Stanley Kubrick was comparatively prolific — in the ’60s alone he released four of his 13 features. In these days of instant gratification, a director taking longer than three years is either deemed to be M.I.A. or about to pop up with a secret film made entirely under the radar. But absence does make the heart grow fonder, and these five directors can expect a warm welcome in 2025.

'Reacher' Fans Will Love Prime Video's Navy Seal Action Series
Image
With box office receipts tallying over $13 billion worldwide, the always entertaining Chris Pratt is undeniably one of the silver screen's most influential and highest-grossing actors of all time, with the charismatic star having dominated Hollywood in hits like the Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World trilogies, Onward, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and The Lego Movie franchise. In 2022, Pratt opted to go back to the world of television, where his stellar career first began, by starring in the pulse-pounding action thriller The Terminal List.

An adaptation of the Jack Carr novel, the gripping series features Pratt as a US Navy Seal who sets out on a mission for revenge after he uncovers a dangerous conspiracy that leads to his family being brutally murdered. Do Directors Get a Best Picture Bump at the Box Office for Their Next Movie? Yes and No
Image
Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.

Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.

The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.

But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...
