An automaton embarks on a breathtaking quest in The Wild Robot trailer, featuring Lupita Nyong’O, Pedro Pascal, and more
Image
Sometimes, it’s easy to forget the world is a beautiful place filled with unimaginable beauty and wonders beneath every shadow, racing riverbed, and endless sky. We need to remember how nature came first and what the world could look like if it were to retake its course. Thankfully, Dreamworks Animation‘s The Wild Robot trailer reminds us of Mother Nature’s grand and beguiling majesty, even if that vision is through the eyes of a character made of metal and wires.

The Wild Robot is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning #1 New York Times best-seller. The series has three books: The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects. The story follows a robot – Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to its new surroundings to survive. Throughout Rozzum’s epic journey, the curious automaton forms relationships with woodland creatures,...

Irons won Best Actor honors from the Chicago Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Circle, and the film was a runner-up for Best Picture at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

This new version was created by Alice Birch, a recent Emmy nominee for co-writing the Hulu limited series “Normal People” (2020). She also earned BAFTA nominations for Best British Film for “Lady Macbeth” (2016) and “The Wonder” (2022), and she won Best Drama Series from the Writers Guild in 2020 as a member of the “Succession” writing team.

‘Dead Ringers’ clip: Double dose of Rachel Weisz in preview of Amazon Prime series [Watch]

“Delivering babies,” ponders one of the Mantle twins in a preview clip from the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series “Dead Ringers.” “We’re opening a birthing center so we can do literally just that until the end of time, nonstop babies,” says the other. But “the lab is the f*cking thing” they’re both really interested in. Watch the brief scene above for a sneak peek of the series, which premieres April 21.

“Dead Ringers” is a gender-flipped update of the 1988 psychological thriller starring Jeremy Irons and tells the story of twin gynecologists who take advantage of the fact that no one can tell them apart. Directed by David Cronenberg, the film won Best Actor prizes for Irons from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Chicago Film Critics Association. Cronenberg’s work behind the camera was awarded by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

‘The Midnight Sky’ cinematographer Martin Ruhe on filming a story of desolation on a grand scale [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“The Midnight Sky” cinematographer Martin Ruhe readily admits that this movie (which is akin to “Gravity” meets “The Revenant”) made for one of the most difficult shoots of his career. “When we started the film, we were shooting in Iceland and we were filming on a glacier. We went into real snowstorms, it was so cold.” Ruhe was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch above).

Ruhe welcomed the opportunity to reunite with George Clooney to make this Netflix release. The pair had worked together on the 2010 film “The American” and the 2019 limited series “Catch 22.” As with the latter, Clooney pulled triple duty on this new Netflix release as star, director and producer. The Oscar-winning actor plays a scientist in the Arctic racing to stop a crew of astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe.

Whether a Bill Nighy fan or a David Hare follower, tune in to PBS, Masterpiece Contemporary, for Part II of The Worricker Trilogy. Turks & Caicos airs tonight at 9pm Et. Military intelligence operative Johnny Worricker (Bill Nighy) was introduced in the TV crime thriller, Page Eight in 2011, after it made quite a splash as the Toronto Film Festival’s closing feature. There weren’t any over-the-top, visually exciting, action sequences; nor was he planning any. The project was about “human beings” Hare said at the time and about “the inner workings of MI5.” ...

A Classic is Born...on Masterpiece Contemporary
guest review by Darwyn Carson With a solid reputation for superior dramas, PBS’s Masterpiece Theatre has undoubtedly been a hard act to follow. Now its close cousin, Masterpiece Contemporary raises the bar tonight with the tightly woven political thriller, Page Eight. Writer-director David Hare (the playwright perhaps best known in the States for his screenplays The Hours and The Reader) has culled together a terrific cast of players led by Bill Nighy that includes Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Judy Davis, Felicity Jones, and Rachel Weisz. A traditional spy drama, taut with suspense, Page Eight almost feels sophisticated in its darkness, with undercurrents of danger lurking in...

Why film producers are relieved when the Oscars are over
Head of BBC Films Christine Langan explains why the end of the awards season is a good thing, and how she 'nurtures' winners like The Queen and Philomena

The Oscars inspire various emotions in film producers: suspense, elation, deflation … and relief. Whatever the outcome, award season is finally over. "They are very exciting, but it's got to the point where they take up a big chunk of the year," observes Christine Langan, head of BBC Films. "You're barely through the summer when the pundits are coming up with a programme of what to watch."

Still, she grants, for those outside the major studios, gongs can be a film's best friend. "Working in the independent sector, you're in the lunatic gang anyway, hoping for some magic – a really unusual story or a really knockout performance – so of course awards are important. They can prolong the life of your film, get it noticed,...

Carey Mulligan debuts in David Hare's Skylight in West End this summer
Stephen Daldry will direct Mulligan and Bill Nighy, who returns to a role he played in 1997

Carey Mulligan will make her West End debut this summer in a revival of David Hare's Skylight to be directed by Stephen Daldry.

Skylight, which will preview at the Wyndham's theatre in June, will also mark a double return for Bill Nighy. Not only will it be his first London stage appearance in 13 years, since Joe Penhall's Blue/Orange, it is also another shot at a part he played in 1997, when he inherited the role of Tom Sergeant from Michael Gambon in Skylight's first West End run.

In Hare's play, Tom, a whizzy, newly widowed restaurateur, pitches up at the flat of his younger ex-lover Kyra Hollis – who will be played by Mulligan – with a view to rekindling a relationship.

Mulligan is already a well-regarded stage performer, having turned in an acclaimed...

Producer David Heyman Talks Gravity, Developing the Technology to Make the Film, Fables, Paddington, The Light Between Oceans, and More
I want to make this very clear: Alfonso Cuarón‘s Gravity is brilliant on every level. While some movies can be enjoyed in the comfort of your home or watched on an iPad or phone, this is not one of them. Cuarón has crafted a work of cinematic genius that borders on the unreal. For ninety minutes you will be spellbound. You'll feel like you're out in space with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. You'll feel the weightlessness. You'll feel their fear. And as soon as it's over, you'll want to experience it again. Trust me, as soon as you can, go to your local theater (hopefully they have IMAX 3D), and pay to see this movie. You will not regret it. For more on Gravity, read Matt's review. At the recent Los Angeles press day I landed an exclusive video interview with producer David Heyman. He talked about the...

Bill Nighy, Christopher Walken for BBC Two's 'Page Eight' sequels
Bill Nighy is to star in two sequels to BBC Two film Page Eight.

The 63-year-old will reprise his role as MI5 spy Johnny Worricker in Turks & Caicos and Salting The Battlefield from writer/director David Hare.

Christopher Walken, Winona Ryder, Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes will also star in Turks & Caicos, which will see Worricker forced to deal with an old girlfriend and the CIA.

Salting The Battlefield will show Nighy appear opposite Saskia Reeves, Judy Davis and Ewen Bremner in a tale that sees Worricker in exile and on the run across Europe.

"We have assembled a most extraordinary cast for these two films," said Hare. BBC announces new series 'Atlantis' to replace 'Merlin'
The BBC has announced a number of new commissions including a series from Misfits creator Howard Overman called Atlantis.

The 13-part series will begin shooting in Wales and Morocco in April, while BBC controller of drama Ben Stephenson confirmed that it will air on BBC One in Merlin's Saturday night slot this autumn.

The series synopsis states: "The city of Atlantis is a mysterious, ancient place; a world of bull leaping, of snake haired goddesses and of palaces so vast it was said they were built by giants.

"It's into this strange, compelling realm that the young Jason arrives and an amazing adventure begins, bringing to life the vast store of Greek myths and legends re-imagined for a new generation."

Other commissions include Death Comes To Pemberley, a three-part adaptation of Pd James's homage to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, written by Juliette Towhidi (Calendar Girls).

Set six years after Pride & Prejudice ends,...

David Hare: 'Working in theatre, you're less at the whim of stupid people'
The playwright on the revival of The Judas Kiss, the loneliness of writing and this year's Oscar nominations

What are you working on?

I'm trying to write but where I work I've got somebody knocking down an extension on one side, somebody else is drilling outside, they are redoing the road. I did a film called Page Eight about a year ago, and to everybody's considerable astonishment it got an enormous audience on BBC2. So I'm being implored by the BBC to write two more.

That was the one with Bill Nighy as an MI5 agent. Have you worked out what people liked about it?

I think it found this huge audience because it had a cheerful insouciance about it. It had a feeling of unforced gaiety and that was a tone that I had not found in my work for some time. When I started in 1970, I didn't really...

Rachel Weisz Talks 'Deep Blue Sea,' Consuming Love [Exclusive Video] Update
Rachel Weisz at an event for Lovely Bones (2009)
Rachel Weisz is a terrific actress at the height of her beauty and power who is trying to push good roles up the hill, with varying results, from "The Whistleblower" to "Agoura."  (More mainstream thriller "Dream House" yielded husband Daniel Craig, but was not a critics' picture.) Update: Now she has won Best Actress from the New York Film Critics Circle for her towering powrformance in "The Deep Bliue Sea." Last year Weisz attended the Toronto Fest with three movies. She rejoined "The Constant Gardener"'s Fernando Meirelles (who directed her to a supporting actress Oscar) in the sophisticated European ensemble "360," Peter Morgan's remake of "La Ronde," which was picked up by Magnolia after opening the London Film Fest (review here). She also played a juicy but small role opposite Bill Nighy in David Hare's adept but surprisingly routine spy thriller "Page Eight," (review,...

Winners of 2012 Emmy Awards Announced!
The 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, took place on Sunday (September 23rd). Showtime's "Homeland" won in the Best Drama category, denying "Mad Men" a record fifth consecutive win. "Modern Family" took home its third straight Best Comedy award. Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" won its 10th consecutive Emmy, which resulted in Jon Stewart being censored during his acceptance speech for saying the F-word. Julianne Moore (pictured) won for Best Actress in a Mini-Series for her portrayal of Sarah Palin in HBO's "Game Change." Moore stated: "Wow, I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down." And Jon Cryer won Best Actor for "Two and a Half Men," something he admitted was not possible with Charlie Sheen around. "The show was really structured around [Sheen's] character, so it was silly for me to be in the lead character [category]. That's changed [with Ashton Kutcher]. It's more of a partnership...

Emmys 2012: HBO, Fueled by Game of Thrones, and CBS Lead Early Winners; Smash Pulls Upset
Game of Thrones (2011)
If this year’s Creative Arts Emmys took place in Westeros, HBO would’ve easily ascended to the Iron Throne.

Fueled by its original series Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, with a little love thrown at the Clive Owen-Nicole Kidman movie Hemingway & Gellhorn to boot, the pay cabler walked away from the evening with 17 total wins, including six for Thrones alone. CBS placed a solid second with 13 wins, including five total for its coverage of the Grammys and Tonys, plus a pair for,...
