Curtis Bernhardt followed the route of his fellow directors Fritz Lang and Robert Siodmak: Germany, France, America, but unlike them he never went back to film in Germany at the end of his career. I looked at his Marlene Dietrich vehicle here. Now let's consider one from his French period.
Carrefour (Crossroads) is an amnesia thriller. Je t'aime amnesia thrillers. As a fan of more ambitious filmmaking, it’s always exciting to see what project British filmmaker Iain Softley is going to take on next. From a cyberpunk cult classic to a sci-fi piece set in a psychiatric institute to a hoodoo thriller set in Louisiana, it’s hard to predict the subject matter and setting of his films. For his most recent project, Trap For Cinderella, Softley took on the task of adapting Sébastien Japrisot’s novel of the same name, bringing it to his home country and providing his own spin on the dark thriller.
Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Iain for an exclusive 1 on 1 chat in honor of the film’s release. We discussed the process of adapting a novel, the use of identity as a theme in cinema, what drew him to the project and more!

His latest film (another literary adaptation), Trap for Cinderella (2013), is awash with style and yet at the same time pays homage to the French New Wave with its over-boiled, but enjoyable, mystery-thriller narrative. Iain Softley’s psychological thriller, Trap for Cinderella, is just a few weeks away from hitting cinemas in the UK, and what we’ve seen so far suggests it’s going to be a memorable new entry for the genre.
The first trailer was released earlier in the month, giving us an excellent first look at Softley’s upcoming return. And now Lionsgate have released the film’s first poster, with Tuppence Middleton front and centre.
Micky (Tuppence Middleton) is a fun-loving photographer, living a party lifestyle in London until a chance encounter with a childhood friend changes her world forever. The opposite to life-and-soul Micky, Do (Alexandra Roach) is a quiet bank clerk, with little by way of a social life. Yet much to the annoyance of her DJ boyfriend Jake (Aneurin Barnard), Micky is all too delighted to reacquaint herself with Do, embracing her old friend with typical gusto.

Iain Softley's Trap For Cinderella harks back to elegant, suspenseful mysteries like Vertigo and Diabolique. In the shadow of those films, it's not particularly groundbreaking, but it's so stylish, intriguing and well-made that innovation hardly seems necessary. After all, the old adage warns us not to fix things that aren't broken, and Softley complies admirably. Were it not for a couple scenes involving cell phones, some pop songs, and the film's fairly copious amount of nudity, it'd be easy to mistake the movie for a lost, sleeper gem from the 60's. Alex Barber's excellent, desaturated 35 mm photography only adds to the retro feel. It's a deft, remarkably assured work, and certainly not the type of film I expected from the director of K-Pax. ...

Ealing Studios and The King's Speech financier Prescience has merged their respective sales arms. The companies previously worked together on both St. Trinian’s films, Dorian Gray and Easy Virtue. They say combining gives them “a unique advantage,” because of the money that Prescience brings to the table. They also said no jobs will be lost in the consolidation. “The beauty of this merger is that we now have access to Prescience’s money,” says Will Machin, Ealing’s head of distribution. Machin will run Ealing Metro. “There are very few companies in the indie marketplace that can offer what we can now.” Prescience has raised around $250 million to date through its Aegis Film Fund and Metropolis Media Eis tax fund. Back in November, was announced that British up and coming actresses Felicity Jones and Imogen Poots had signed on for Iain Softley’s indie project Trap For Cinderella.
Since then, both Jones and Poots launched big buzz around them – Jones gained critical acclaim for her role in Sundance hit Like Crazy, and previews for this summer’s Fright Night are recommending an exceptional performance from Poots. Jones has been working on David Hare‘s Page Eight, and the comedy Cheerful Weather for the Wedding in the last few months, and was a candidate for the lead role in Snow White and the Huntsman which was finally taken by Kristen Stewart.
Poots seems is ruled out because of scheduling conflicts since she lined up for roles in A Late Quartet, The Laureate and Hello Darkness. And it doesn’t seem to have paid of for Softley, as Jones and Poots are exited,...
