Big Freedia is fusing gospel with bounce. On Friday, the New Orleans musician released her single “Take My Hand,” off her upcoming gospel project.
“Tell the congregation/This is Freedia nation/Ain’t no room for hatin,” she sings on the track, which samples the voice of gospel preacher Dr. Cj Johnson. “Over here, we’re celebrating.”
Freedia debuted the song while performing at Stubb’s at SXSW earlier this month, where she called her upcoming project a “gospel revival” as she hit the stage backed by a gospel choir.

Places of political turmoil are often defined by just that – conflict, trauma and the big geopolitical issues. It’s very easy to forget about the humanity that resides within the everyday lives of people wanting to live their lives and finding hope in the most unexpected of places. Acclaimed Indian writer/director/producer Onir tackles this head on with We Are Faheem & Karun, his beautifully sensitive portrayal of life in Gurez, a remote village on the Kashmiri border. A security man from India, Karun, is posted there and unexpectedly, through a series of interactions at the checkpoint he falls for Faheem, a young Kashmiri local and against all odds, their relationship blossoms. Inspired by a true story of a gay army man, the Ministry of Defence in India initially refused to give Onir the permission to shoot, stating the film was derogatory to the army…three years later it’s...

When you think of The Lord of the Rings movies, you probably remember the big players, Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas dramatically flipping onto a horse, and, of course, Gollum arguing with himself. However, with a story as massive as Middle-earth, not everyone got the spotlight. Some characters showed up, did something kind of important, and then vanished into the background like they were never there.
Peter Jackson’s trilogy had over 11 hours of runtime, but even with all that time, some characters got the short end of the stick. Maybe they were meant to be more important but got their roles trimmed down, or maybe they were just there to move the plot along before being completely forgotten. You might remember a cool fight scene, a cryptic line, or a side character looking vaguely familiar, but can you name them? Probably not.

Matthew Modine has signed on to appear in the next installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise.
He will reportedly play a general in the film, which is set to enter production next month in Australia for a March 26, 2027 release via Warner Bros.
Modine joins the previously announced Dan Stevens, who will reprise his role as kaiju expert Trapper from last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kaitlyn Dever (No One Will Save You), Jack O’Connell (Eden Lake), and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods)
The followup to Godzilla x Kong — the highest grossing Godzilla film of all time — will feature several new human characters alongside the iconic Titans as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.
Insiders say that while Godzilla and Kong will still be fronting the film, Legendary is looking to build on its human characters. Director Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) is aiming to combine...

“I Am What I Am” is the third feature film for Shinya Tamada, a director with lots of experience in theatre and television dramas, and it is also the third film – after “The Nighthawk’s First Love” (Yuka Yasukawa, 2021) and “Grown-ups” (Takuya Kato, 2022) – of the project “(Not) Heroine Movies”, initiated by Nagoya Broadcasting Network with the intent of subverting the stereotypical female roles in films. In this case the cliché to subvert is the classic romantic dramedy.
I Am What I Am is streaming on Jff Theater until 2025/05/01 11:00:00 [Jst]
The film’s opening introduces us immediately to the complicated universe of protagonist Kasumi (Toko Miura) and all things that bother her. It’s a night out with co-workers of a call center and the two guys cannot stop talking and asking the girls about romantic attraction, taste in boys and so on. Jessica Williams had a hilarious moment with her Shrinking co-star Harrison Ford at the 2025 SAG Awards when he unintentionally stole the spotlight during her speech.
The event, hosted by Kristen Bell and streamed live on Netflix, kicked off with its traditional “I Am an Actor” introduction, where stars share stories about their journeys in Hollywood. Williams started her speech by saying, “Los Angeles is known as the city of dreams, and sure enough, all my dreams have come true here.”
However, just as she continued, Ford was caught on camera casually eating a chip. Realizing he was being filmed, he awkwardly tried to hide it, causing the audience to burst into laughter.
Seeing the moment unfold, Williams turned to Ford and jokingly shouted, “I told him to turn away! Don’t look!” before finishing her speech. She wrapped up with, “But more than just a dream factory, this city has always been my home.

Just like the kaiju themselves, Legendary's Monsterverse continues to grow, and the next film in the franchise just landed one of 2025's hottest stars. The next movie in the series, a sequel to 2024'sGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, is currently slated for release in 2027. Not much is known about the film so far, aside from a few casting details. Kaitlyn Dever (who also stars in Season 2 of The Last of Us) is set to star in the new film, with Dan Stevens also reprising his role as Traper Beasley from the last entry in the franchise.
Per Deadline, Jack O'Connell has now also joined the cast of the next Monsterverse movie. O'Connell is arguably one of the most underappreciated actors working today, having delivered phenomenal performances in UK dramas like Skins and This Is England, as well as the Netflix original western, Godless. The highly prolific Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude has, in the past year alone, directed two fictional features, co-directed a feature-length documentary, and released a one-hour experimental film made entirely of webcam footage shot at Andy Warhol’s grave.
Unlike his more famous fellow countryman, the Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu, whose intricately crafted dramas come out every four or five years, Jude likes to make movies quick and dirty, as if his productions had a hard time keeping up with all the ideas racing through his head. His last two features — Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World and Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn — were both ripped-from-the-headlines satires that felt fast, fresh and utterly contemporary, like they were shot on the fly.

Tharun Moorthy Mohanlal Meeting (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Tharun Moorthy is no stranger to film directing, having already helmed critically acclaimed hits like Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka. Despite his experience, he struggled for nearly eight months to secure a meeting with Mohanlal to narrate Thudarum’s script.
However, the project didn’t come to a halt. Producer M. Renjith, writer K.R. Sunil, Tharun Moorthy, and his team continued discussions and preparations. Meanwhile, Mohanlal was deeply engaged in the production of Malaikottai Vaaliban and planning the schedule for Empuraan, leaving them uncertain about when they would finally get their chance to meet him.
‘We were eagerly anticipating his call.’ Tharun Moorthy revealed in an interview with the YouTube channel I Am with Dhanya Varma.

Movies really do seem like magic sometimes. They bring fantasy worlds to life, there are people who look like Ana de Armas, and they occasionally accomplish feats of cinematography that seem to defy physics. But like everything else in movies, including Ana de Armas, it’s just the result of clever trickery.

In 2023, a scene from an episode of Dawson’s Creek of James van der Beek throwing a basketball in Joshua Jackson’s face went viral after a Twitter user realized the ball appears to bounce from Jackson’s face into the camera and away into the distance. How did they do it? How could they get the angle just right and not damage the camera? Was it CGI? Two shots cut together? According to Jackson, it was sheer luck. It was also a painted beach ball, so that’s how the camera held up. As Jackson further pointed out,...

In a new exciting bit of news, a report from Deadline has revealed that Dan Stevens is currently in talks to reprise his role as Monarch veterinarian Trapper in the next Monsterverse film. Stevens first played Trapper in the 2024 film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, in a supporting role alongside Rebecca Hall (as Monarch scientist Ilene Andres) and Brian Tyree Henry. Despite Stevens' limited screen time, Trapper stood out as one of the more entertaining human characters in the movie, stealing some of the most fun scenes in the film and nailing his interactions with the larger-than-life monsters, known as titans.
Besides the potential return of Stevens' character, the Godzilla x Kong sequel also recently cast Kaitlyn Dever in the film, though the full nature of her role remains to be seen. Whatever the case, things seem to be moving forward fairly quickly for the sequel, with Grant Sputore...

The follow-up to last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be directed by franchise newcomer Grant Sputore (I Am Mother), but at least one familiar face will be part of the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Stevens is in talks to reprise his role as the Kaiju expert named Trapper from Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong.
Dan Stevens perfectly summed up his Monsterverse character last year: “[My character is] a specialist in these creatures… If you’ve got a sick titan, Trap is your guy.”
Kaitlyn Dever (No One Will Save You) is also in negotiations to come face-to-face with Godzilla and Kong in the next installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise.

Love it or hate it, Rotten Tomatoes is now more important than ever when it comes to whether film and TV fans decide to check out the latest releases at home or in theaters, and it's not uncommon for studios to tout scores as proudly as star ratings.
Marvel Studios Animation has proven to be a big part of the Multiverse Saga with What If...? kicking things off in 2021. Since then, we've had a spin-off of a hit movie, a new take on the McU's Spider-Man, and a revival of one of the most beloved animated TV shows ever.
To mark the release of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, we're taking a look at how each of these shows compares based on their respective Rotten Tomatoes scores. There are no "Rotten" titles but where each of these sits is bound to be a point of contention.

And it doesn’t sound like they’ll be together for the delivery.

The next entry in the MonsterVerse continues the franchise tradition of getting talented actors who one wouldn't think of joining a big kaiju franchise where a giant gorilla punches a giant lizard. While the main draw of the MonsterVerse films has been Godzilla, Kong, and other titans, the franchise has also included an incredible lineup of talent, including Bryan Cranston, Brie Larson, and Samuel L. Jackson. For the upcoming follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Last of Us season 2 star Kaitlyn Dever is joining the franchise.

On the surface, Girish Ad’s I Am Kathalan (2024) is every jilted incel Stem bro’s wet dream. A computer engineer taking revenge on his ex-girlfriend by hacking into her father’s company’s server? Dream so good that it could be the premise of a biopic of Elon Musk. Not that the world needs one. Girish Ad, to his credit, does not allow “I Am Kathalan” to be too ‘enamored’ by such dreams. The film, under the guise of a techno-thriller, is more about human frailties, with the fallacies of the youth and the ignorance of the old taking centerstage. Having said that, it must be noted that the ‘technological’ aspect of the film is deftly done with specific attention to details when it comes to ‘hacking.’ It does not involve the tried-and-tested method of showing a black screen with the word ‘downloading’ written on it with a progression bar.

One of the many reasons Xo, Kitty is all the rage is because K-culture fans get to live their Korean fantasies through Kitty Song Covey’s story. This includes, but isn’t limited to, being surrounded by beautiful Korean people, experiencing the culture, and living your life to a K-pop soundtrack. You know I needed something to get into the topic of today’s discussion! Anyway, while a lot of the music on the show is quite random, some of it is very strategically placed specifically with context to the show. Of course, that one Enhypen song is the most obvious choice for this season, almost like it was specifically written to shine in this moment. But, leaving that aside, I thought this would be a great opportunity to inspect something that doesn’t need inspecting and try to put reason to something that’s perfectly wholesome by itself, just because I can.

Warning: This article contains Major Spoilers for Xo, Kitty season 2!
Netflix’s Xo, Kitty season 2 includes a fantastic soundtrack that blends together K-pop and American pop music, blending the cultures that Kitty has experienced. Continuing the story of season 1, Xo, Kitty deep friendships, teen romances, and family drama take center stage in season 2 as she returns to the Korean Independent School of Seoul.
While Xo, Kitty’s Korean setting was important to the first season, it becomes even more integral to the second season. Annually, Rotten Tomatoes hands out Golden Tomatoes to the best-reviewed movies and TV series from the past year.
Previous winners include Oppenheimer, The Last of Us, Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and House of the Dragon, but Dune: Part Two has reigned supreme this time.
Shōgun largely dominated the TV side, though there were noteworthy wins for both The Penguin and X-Men '97. Unfortunately, neither Deadpool & Wolverine nor Agatha All Along have received any love, even in the newly created "Fan Favorite Movies" category.
The winners and nominees are determined by an adjusted score formula, which is a weighted ranking that compensates for the variation in the number of reviews when comparing movies or TV shows within a specified time frame.
Critics have always had something of a complicated relationship with comic book adaptations, particularly in recent years. However, between this and other televised award shows, it's clear...

If there's one element that never fails to make fantasy stories like Netflix's Damsel more exciting, it's dragons. These intimidating creatures are guaranteed to increase the tension with their majestic wings and their ability to breathe fire. Netflix tapped into the subgenre with Millie Bobby Brown's Damsel, where the talented actress plays Princess Elodie, a young woman forced to fight off a dragon she was offered up to as a sacrifice.
While Elodie's journey is more action-laced, there are many dragon tales filled with romance, drama, and horror. Regardless of the true focus of these fantasy stories, they tend to orbit around the imposing figure of the dragon. The fantasy genre's versatility often leads to all sorts of stories set in unique worlds. Netflix's Damsel left burning questions answered, and with that in mind, viewers might find themselves craving more exciting dragon stories.

The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominees in seven categories for the 61st Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing 2024. Sound mixing is meant to make a film’s environment, be it the most muted mumblecore world or the wildest, loudest fantasy, seem completely natural. Mixing requires specialized skill and artistry in the craft of sound, and Cas members review hundreds of projects to ensure the nominees truly reflect excellence in sound mixing in Motion Picture and Television entertainment.
The nominees they have chosen are, unsurprisingly, some of the most complex and musical film worlds of 2024, ones where the overall vibe is as important to get across as the story information and emotional resonance carried through dialogue, sound effects, songs, and score. “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked,” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” are among the feature nominees, while “The Wild Robot,” “Moana 2,” and “Inside Out 2” rank among the animated nominees.

Emilia Pérez and Conclave led the British Academy of Film and Television Arts longlist selections on Friday, the first step toward securing BAFTA Awards nominations when the list of official 2025 award contenders is revealed on Jan. 15.
Netflix’s top contender Emilia Pérez landed on 15 longlists — tying a record set by Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front two years ago and Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Barbie last year. Among its mentions were Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, and four longlist nods for its quartet of actresses — with Karla Sofia Gascon hitting the lead actress longlist and co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz all appearing on the supporting actress longlist. The four actresses shared the Best Actress honors at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Emilia Pérez made its debut.

The anime adaptation of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is officially on the way, set to premiere in April 2025. Announced at Jump Festa on December 21, 2024, this spinoff takes us to a time before the main series, introducing a darker, grittier side of the My Hero Academia world.
While familiar faces like All Might make appearances, they take a backseat to a unique lineup of characters. Among them is Knuckleduster, a vigilante with a no-nonsense attitude and no Quirk to rely on.
Knuckleduster’s real name is Iwao Oguro, and he’s nothing like the polished pro heroes we’re used to. Middle-aged and Quirkless, he’s carved out a niche in this world by fighting crime with martial arts, brass knuckles, and sheer grit.
This has drawn comparisons to Batman, and the series leans into that vibe. Hideyuki Furuhashi, the author of Vigilantes, has openly said Knuckleduster is to All Might what Batman is to Superman.

Will & Harper, the Netflix documentary about comedic actor Will Ferrell and his friendship with SNL pal Harper Steele who came out as trans, earned a spot on the coveted Oscar documentary feature shortlist today.
It wasn’t the only shortlist honor for the film directed by Josh Greenbaum. The tune from the closing credits – “Will and Harper Go West,” written by SNL alum Kristen Wiig and Sean Douglas and performed by Wiig – got shortlisted for Best Original Song (Douglas is the son of actor Michael Keaton).
But another high-profile documentary in the running for the shortlist didn’t make the cut: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, about the late actor who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. That film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, recently won Best Documentary Feature at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, and last week earned a nomination for the Producers Guild of America Award.

In I Am: Celine Dion, the French-Canadian singer allowed director Irene Taylor and cinematographer Nick Midwig to film her struggles with stiff person syndrome. Dion received the diagnosis in 2022 and later had to cancel her world tour due to muscle spasms and rigidity. One such spasm occurred while Taylor and Midwig were rolling, and it appears in the film.
“We both stood back and assessed, like, ‘Are we in the way?’” Midwick said during Deadline’s awards-season event Contenders Documentary. “No. ‘Are we inhibiting her from any medical attention that she could get?’ No. Was there anything that we could do to assist in aiding her in any way? No, we’re not trained medical professionals.”
Midwig added that the episode took 40 minutes in real life. It is edited down to a few minutes in the film but still conveys what has become a regular occurrence in Dion’s life.

17 years ago, when working on the scripts for The Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas explained his views on the dark side - but these comments raise a lot more questions than answers after the prequel trilogy. We always like to pretend that George Lucas had Star Wars all figured out from the start, but the reality is very different. He worked with scriptwriter Leigh Brackett, for example, on The Empire Strikes Back - and the first draft had no mention of the famous "I am your father" scene.
Taking to Twitter, Star Wars historian Paul Duncan has shared some of the earliest notes Lucas shared with Brackett - dating all the way back to November 1977. In these notes, Lucas explains some of the core ideas he wants to develop, and he even presents his own thoughts on the dark side. As fascinating as they are, they raise a lot of unanswered questions,...

“Got a lotta talk in my brain right now/Sorry, gotta do it, gotta let you down,” Shawn Mendes sings on the pointedly titled “Who I Am,” the acoustic opening track from his fifth studio album. The meditative Shawn comes two years after Mendes canceled his 2022 world tour due to mental health issues, and the singer’s new music is emblematic of a newfound self-reflection. The result is his most candid work to date.
With nothing but time on his hands to take stock of his life, Mendes sounds at peace with not knowing life’s big questions. “I stepped off the stage with nothing left/All the lights were fuckin’ with my head,” he sings on lead single “Why Why Why.” “But here I am, singing songs again.”
On “The Mountain,” Mendes evokes John Lennon’s “Imagine” as he looks both inward and outward in an attempt to reconnect with his higher self.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie's 2015 comedy-drama Focus has a lot of star power in its main leads, but it also boasts a surprisingly notable cast of characters. Focus was rather divisive when it came out; it holds a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 56% and an audience score of 53%. It seemed that no one could agree whether Focus was an entertaining heist film filled with betrayals and twists or if it was an incoherent and overly convoluted movie. Now, however, Focus has gained popularity on Netflix, and it's likely due - at least in part - to the movie's stellar cast.
Margot Robbie and Will Smith's collaboration on Focus was one of the film's main selling points, but it wasn't the only time the actors have worked together. 2016's Suicide Squad reunited Robbie and Smith after Focus, and it gave viewers another taste of their great on-screen chemistry. Interestingly, however,...
