The Earl

  • 2007
YOUR RATING
THE EARL, based on Brett Neveu's play of the same title, is a bombastic over-the-top adaptation of the cult play that sold out for six months at Red Orchid Theatre in Chicago. Based on a dream, this cinematic comic strip is not for the faint hearted! It is the second Red Orchid play to be made into a film after the recently released BUG, directed by William Friedkin. Although violent, it contains moments of genuine humor. The play was described by critics as FIGHT CLUB meets the Three Stooges. A more appropriate description of the film might be FIGHT CLUB meets TRUE WEST!

The plot of THE EARL involves three bothers, Peter, (JOHN MORAN); Rick, (STEVE SCHINE); and Kent, (NOAH SIMON) who have a very dysfunctional relationship. They meet at various times, and the only way they can relate to each other is through a highly ritualized, rule oriented "game" of interactive violence. Rick has been absent from the game for three years, having moved to Hollywood where he is the personal assistant to a Clint Eastwoodesque film icon (who never loses at ANYTHING), the actor Lawrence Stevens (played by DANNY GOLDRING).

The film begins as Rick returns home to once again engage in the game. In keeping with the rules, an outsider can be invited to play as an ace in the hole known as an Earl. Rick invites his boss to participate, hoping to avenge the past wrongs done to him by his brothers. When actor Lawrence Stevens arrives as the THE EARL and it is discovered that he is Kents long-time movie star hero, the game is changed forever!
