The Exorcism Writers & Directors Talk Subverting Genre Tropes With Russell Crowe Horror Movie
Image
Joshua J Miller and M.A. Fortin bring a subversive approach to horror with The Exorcism, exploring addiction and trauma. Russell Crowe leads the cast of the horror movie, though Ryan Simpkins and Chloe Bailey's characters highlight the expectation-subverting approach to the subgenre. Miller and Fortin didn't intend to cast Crowe right after his Pope's Exorcist success, though think the two movies can "have a conversation" with one another.

Joshua J Miller and M.A. Fortin return to their horror movie roots with The Exorcism. The creative partners, and real-life couple, first broke out on the scene together with the 2015 meta horror comedy The Final Girls, which not only saw largely positive reviews, but also has amassed a strong cult following in the years since its release. One Detail Makes The Night Agent's Streaming Success On Netflix Even More Impressive
Image
"The Night Agent" season 1 was Netflix's biggest original series in 2023, surpassing established shows in terms of streaming hours. The success of season 1 prompted Netflix to quickly renew "The Night Agent" for a second season. The upcoming season 2 of "The Night Agent" has the potential to surpass the success of season 1, with high anticipation from fans.

Netflix released The Night Agent season 1 in March 2023, and the show faced unprecedented success on the streaming service, which was all the more impressive because of one factor. The action thriller series, created by Shawn Ryan, was based on Matthew Quirk's 2019 novel of the same name. Quirk's story, which featured Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent who operated the Night Action telephone, encountering a complex conspiracy involving a mole in the United States government, was told over the course of ten episodes. The show received mostly positive reviews, but its success came via total streaming hours.

‘Ginny & Georgia’ Dominated Netflix In First Half Of 2023; Data Reveals High Interest In YA & Female-Led Titles
Image
New insights are still being unearthed after Netflix dumped the viewership data for nearly its entire catalog from the first half of 2023, which includes more than 18,000 titles.

One of those observations is that young adult and female-centric content are doing especially well for the streamer. In fact, though The Night Agent is ranked No. 1 in terms of hours viewed, that’s really only because the data separates individual seasons of a series. Ginny & Georgia was actually the most-watched title from January to June on Netflix, with a combined 967.2M hours viewed between Seasons 1 and 2.

Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia debuted on January 5, and it alone racked up 665.1M hours viewed.

Season 1 tallied 302.1M (aka 30M “views”), likely reinvigorated by those catching up before watching the new episodes, as well as audiences who were introduced to the title for the first time.

Inside the Netflix Data Trove: ‘Wednesday,’ ‘Suits’ and 10,000 Titles (Almost) No One Watched
Image
Netflix released a huge amount of streaming data Tuesday — viewing totals for more than 18,000 movies and seasons of TV for the first half of 2023.

Taken as a whole, it’s almost an overwhelming amount of information that speaks to Netflix’s ability to engage its huge subscriber base (just under 239 million for the end of the period covered in the data dump) — and maybe not a ton more? The stats presented are for total hours viewed, which is how Netflix measures engagement across its portfolio — but it’s also not the metric the streamer uses to order its weekly top 10 lists. For those, it uses the “view” formula of total watch time divided by running time, which somewhat levels the playing field for films and series with shorter run times. (And there are, of course, economic factors and other metrics that influence decision-making that the company will continue to keep in house.

Shadow and Bone’s Perplexing Cancellation and Other Revelations from Netflix’s Viewership Report
Image
For the first time ever, Netflix has published an engagement report for the movies and TV shows available on the streaming service. This report includes both original and licensed content and lists the total hours watched for everything that has 50,000 hours or higher, which amounts to more than 18,000 titles. It’s supposedly an effort by Netflix to be more transparent in their user data, likely brought on by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that called for streaming data to be shared more publicly. However, while this is an important step forward, the report reveals a lot more than just a giant list of numbers.

Shadow and Bone’s Perplexing Cancellation

Given the fact that Shadow and Bone was canceled after its second season, you’d think that the series would be pretty far down in this report. However, season 2 of the series ranks 26th on this list with 192,900,000 hours viewed.

Netflix shares viewership numbers from the first half of 2023 for 18,214 shows and movies
Image
Netflix just gave entertainment analysts an early Christmas present. For the first time, the streamer has shared a program-by-program breakdown of its traffic. The What We Watched report lists the viewership received by more than 18,000 shows and movies during the first half of 2023.

What We Watched represents a major reversal for Netflix, which was previously tight-lipped when it came to specific viewership figures. Instead of sticking to that policy, the entertainment innovator is providing the public with the same data it uses to evaluate its programming.

The advent of the What We Watched report can be partially attributed to the recent WGA and SAG strikes, which turned streamers like Netflix into Hollywood boogeymen. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Variety that viewership data was a prominent topic of discussion during the entertainment industry negotiations, but the strikes were not the “main factor” leading to the release of What We Watched.

La Reina Del Sur Season 3: Is It Worth Watching? A Review Roundup
Image
La Reina del Sur season 3 is praised for its thrilling action scenes set in beautiful locations, particularly in Machu Picchu. Kate del Castillo delivers an excellent portrayal of Teresa Mendoza, a complex character driven by revenge, survival, redemption, and freedom. While some viewers find the character Sofia annoying, criticism towards her reflects a problematic trend in fandoms where female characters are disliked for being "irritating," similar to Skyler from Breaking Bad or Shiv from Succession.

Following its release, many have wondered if La Reina del Sur season 3 is worth watching and if it is just as good as the show's previous two seasons. An adaptation of the Arturo Pérez-Reverte novel of the same name, La Reina del Sur tells the story of a poor woman in Mexico named Teresa Mendoza (Kate del Castillo) who quickly becomes one of the most powerful drug lords in all of southern Spain. ‘Ted Lasso’ Finale Hits Series High in Streaming Rankings
Image
The season three (and potential series) finale of Ted Lasso delivered record streaming numbers for Apple TV+.

Viewers watched 1.24 billion minutes’ worth of the Emmy-winning comedy for the week of May 29-June 4 — the first time any show on Apple’s streaming service has topped a billion minutes. The season three finale, released May 31, accounted for 529 million of those minutes (about 42.5 percent of the total), which Nielsen says is the highest weekly total for a single episode of Ted Lasso.

Since it premiered in August 2020, Ted Lasso has drawn more than 25 billion minutes of viewing in the United States, per Nielsen. Through June 4, the season two finale was the biggest single episode at 960 million minutes — a total that the season three closer seems likely to pass, given that it got more than halfway there in a single week.

Ted Lasso finished third among all titles for the week. The top two...

Why Javier Left Queen Of The South
Image
A mercenary of the Jiménez cartel, Javier Jiménez (Alfonso Herrera) was introduced in Queen of the South season 3, only to be killed off in season 4, and his abrupt departure raised some eyebrows. Premiering on the USA Network in 2016, Queen of the South ran for five seasons, finishing its run in 2021. Queen of the South is a remake of Spanish-language telenovela La Reina del Sur, and it follows Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga), a woman who builds a drug empire in Mexico after fleeing to the United States. As Teresa's success and wealth grow, so does her profile and the list of people wanting to take her down.

Though he might not be smart, Javier being killed off of Queen of the South was a huge blow for everyone who had grown attached to the loyal mercenary. But the successful Herrera has starred in several projects since leaving Queen of the South...

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ‘Fubar’ Opens at No. 1 on Streaming Chart

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first TV series got off to a strong start in the United States.

Fubar, the action comedy featuring the Terminator star, led Nielsen’s streaming charts for its premiere week of May 22-28 (the show debuted on May 25). Succession was steady in the week leading up to its series finale, and Prime Video’s big-budget Citadel joined the rankings for the week its season finale dropped.

Fubar amassed 1.53 billion minutes of viewing for the week, which equates about 25.57 million hours — about 29 percent of the worldwide total Netflix reported for the show during that week (Nielsen and Netflix use different methods to calculate viewing time). Netflix has renewed the show for a second season. Swat, which joined the rankings the previous week, more than doubled its viewing time to 1.35 billion minutes across Netflix, Hulu and Paramount+. It was the only other title to crack a billion minutes of viewing.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Kicked off Netflix’s Top 10 by J.Lo’s ‘The Mother’
Image
It’s probably not getting an Oscar nominations anytime soon, but “The Mother” has bested Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” where it counts: Netflix viewership metrics. Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.

Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

Netflix’s all-time Film list now looks like this:

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 22): J-Lo (‘The Mother’) and Schwarzenegger (‘Fubar’) top the charts
Image
Netflix has released its weekly chart of how movies and television series have been doing on the streamer, with the Jennifer Lopez action-thriller remaining in #1 over the Top 10 English film chart for the week of May 22, its third week in that position. Read on for this week’s analysis.

Before we get to the movies, it’s quite notable that Arnold Schwarzenegger made his debut on the streamer in a rare live action series called “Fubar,” created by Nick Santora (“Scorpion”), which debuted atop the English TV list with 88.9 million hours viewed, easily the most-viewed series of the week. It entered the Top 10 in 90 countries and was the #1 watched series in the United States, Canada and dozens of other countries across the globe.

It still received some stiff competition from the “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” spin-off series, “Xo, Kitty,” its first season getting 63.8 million hours viewed last...

What’s New on Netflix in May 2023
Image
Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.

“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. And if you missed the most recent season of the niche (but delightful) comedy series “Documentary Now!,” you can stream that on Netflix starting May 9.

Check out the full list of what’s new on Netflix in May 2023 below.

Netflix New Releases: May 2023
Image
Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.

Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.

Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.

On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.

Netflix Added 1.75 Million Subscribers in First Full Quarter with Ads
Image
Media analysts expected Netflix would add somewhere in the range of 2 million-3 million subscribers, give or take, in the first quarter of 2023. The streaming king fell a little short, adding 1.75 million. Its new worldwide paid-subscriber tally is 232.5 million. It’s also world-leading, unless you count every Disney-controlled streaming subscription individually.

This was the first quarter for which Netflix did not provide internal estimates for net subscriber adds (or losses) to the press and investment community. Given the results, it was probably a good time to walk away from that, but with the addition of Netflix’s “Basic with Ads” tier means revenue — not subscriber growth — is the company’s primary driver. Regardless of your preference, both were disappointments this quarter.

Netflix’s Q1 revenue was also a bit below expectations at $8.162 billion vs. a consensus-estimate $8.18 billion. Wall Street believed the streamer would post earnings of $2.86 per share; Netflix beat that by two cents.

Netflix Top 10 (Week of February 13): ‘You’ and ‘Your Place or Mine’ remain atop charts for 2nd week
Image
Netflix has released the Top 10 viewing numbers for the week of February 13, and without any new high-profile releases last week, the charts mostly remained the same as last time. Penn Badgley’s series “You” and the Reese Withspoon-Ashton Kutcher rom-com “Your Place or Mine” did well again, the latter presumably helped by Valentine’s Day last Tuesday.

The fourth season of “You” ended up in the Top 10 in 88 countries with 64.1 million hours viewed, down from 92 million views its launch week with the first five episodes having 38 million views. The first and third seasons also continue to be watched with 22.4 million and 15.6 million hours, respectively.

By comparison, “Your Place or Mine” increased its views to 52.8 million hours vs. the previous week’s 51.2 million views. Again, the romantic comedy from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna probably got a nice bump from V-Day. Other movies returning to the...

If You Don't Watch Telenovelas Already, "El Señor de los Cielos" Season 8 Might Make You Reconsider
Image
When we think of telenovelas, we're quick to get nostalgic about the ones we grew up watching with our moms and abuelas. We tend to associate them with being an older-generation thing, with their overdramatic and also very predictable love narratives. But that doesn't mean there aren't young Latinx folks out there who don't tune in. It makes sense, considering there are audiences who do consume content and entertainment both in English and Spanish. In fact, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises established the term "200ers" to describe them, referring to a demographic of Latinxs who identify 100 percent as American and 100 percent as Latinx and "share the values of both cultures, are bilingual, and flawlessly jump between cultures." This would explain why Emmy Award-winning telenovela "El Señor de los Cielos," with its eighth season returning to Telemundo on Tuesday, Jan. 17, has become a cross-generational hit over the years, appealing to a wider Latinx audience than ever thought possible.

Peru Undergoes Production Landscape Upgrade as ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,’ ‘Moon Heart’ Shoots Raise Profile of the Country
Image
Peru as a filming location can be viewed before and after the making of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” where a good chunk of the seventh iteration in the Paramount Pictures franchise is set in the picturesque country.

Directed by Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”), the upcoming “Transformers” is said to have injected an estimated 10 million-plus into Peru’s economy. More importantly, it prompted the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a new artistic production visa that provides special migratory status to visiting crew and talent, which in turn, facilitates the import of equipment and props. More than 30 vehicles, including trucks, high speed cars, motorbikes and Vw classics, were shipped to Peru for the sci-fi movie. In the past, people had to use a journalist visa to work on audiovisual projects in the country, which was cumbersome, says producer Bruno Canale of Apu Prods., which provided production services to the reportedly 200 million pic.

Ratings: ABC’s CMA Awards Hits High Note in Demo, Viewership
David Eigenberg, Hanako Greensmith, Taylor Kinney, Joe Minoso, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Jocelyn Hudon in Chicago Fire (2012)
Despite decreasing awards viewership across the board, ABC saw a hit in its numbers for Wednesday night’s broadcast of the 2022 Country Music Association Awards.

The network’s live broadcast was up around 10 in viewing figures from the year prior (averaging 7.6 million viewers compared to last year’s 6.8). That watching increase follows 2021’s 3.5 dip, which was readily recovered. Additionally, the special held steady in the advertising-friendly demo of 18-49 year olds, per official Nielsen figures of live plus same-day data, scoring 1.1 in the demo, same as last year.

Per the network, the 56th Annual CMA Awards ranked over its next competitor by 23 in total viewers (7.6 million vs. 6.2 million for NBC’s “Chicago Fire”) and by 43 among the demo (1.0/10 vs. 0.7/6 for CBS’ “Survivor”). The broadcast also hit a three-year high in viewership since 2019. In live stream minutes watched, the ceremony also posted a growth of 10, from 3 million minutes to 3.3 million.

ABC News’ “On the Road to the CMA Awards,” the Luke Bryan-hosted behind-the-scenes special of the upcoming awards ceremony, averaged 1.4 million viewers and received 0.17 in the demo on Tuesday, according to Nielsen’s official live plus same-day figures.

The special, which will also be available Tuesday on Hulu, sees the news teams travel across the globe to three different continents — Australia, Europe and North America — for a look at some of the top country music stars in the lead-up to the 2022 CMA Awards, airing Nov. 9. “On the Road to the CMA Awards” explores the highs and lows of life on tour, including the more private offstage moments and interactions with loyal fans.

NBC’s “Chicago Med” raked in 6.6 million average viewers for the departing episode of Asjha Cooper, who played Dr. Vanessa Taylor for two seasons and appeared on 29 episodes of the Dick Wolf show.
